Presenting today’s vintage thrift purchase: a Bostitch B5B stapler, almost entirely made of heavy steel, only a dollar. Why’s this one special? Let’s have a look at the front...

Instead of the top section folding in half and exposing the spring and pusher to add staples, the front panel unlatches and hinges up to admit them.

The sleeve of staples slips down the slightly greyer area; that’s actually a pusher with a spring, which ratchets a bit when pushed inward so you can slide a sleeve in and it stays in place, rather than shove it and have it fly back out as you’d expect.

Another interesting feature of this model is that there’s a lever (upper right) to open the latch (center) which holds the stapler halves together and use it as a tacker, rather than like most models where a tug will hinge the top and bottom apart or there’s a springy button on the bottom to hold to unlatch the halves.

This stapler fansite with futher details dates the staper in the early 1950s, due to the name “Bostitch” rather than “Boston Wire Stitcher” being engraved on it (a change made in 1948) and the presence of screws near the rear hinge to hold the rubber foot on (a design choice which disappeared in the late 1950s).

my mom is an archivist/librarian who collects vintage office supplies and one of her favorite staplers broke a couple days ago and she asked my dad to fix it but his hands are too large and his eyesight has faded with time and his love for her cannot make up for his shaky talent and we don't have the right tools for the job anyway so she emailed bostitch for help and is waiting on a reply btw. if you even care.
