NE Vacation lets gooo
So I'm still really worn out but less than I ended up being yesterday so HERE is a post about the trip I just went on! It's gonna get real big and have a couple photos so I'll just go ahead and cut it here lol
-We went to visit family in Rhode Island...I have been to NYC a couple times but not any further north than that so anything in New England was a brand new experience. I was not a fan of the humidity (pretty arid here at home lol) but I like ocean and forest so I thought it was super pretty! I could not believe all the flowers and blue/purple hydrangeas EVERYWHERE
Tumblr media
-We did fly in and out of Providence airport...but since it is super tiny we had to do connecting flights both ways. Wednesday last week we had to get up at 3 AM (after I had a full work day the day before) to get to the first plane, and on this Tuesday the layover between flights was REAL tight so both travel days were kind of brutal.
-ANYway, we ended up going to the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachussetts for two days. I don't think we covered a quarter of the show, we didn't expect it to be as enormous as it was. I ended up getting an antique inkwell shaped like a shell (it rotates on its stand), a metal dog, some vintage postcards (I love old landscape photos and interesting buildings), an old fan with a beautiful mountain painting on the front and a funeral home ad on the back (wtf lol), and a vintage travel guide to Rome with a lot of pictures but everything in Italian.
Tumblr media
-Some other family from New York ended up coming with us to the antique show, as my aunt had rented a Vrbo (first time I've been in one) and there was plenty of room. One of those days we got takeout from a local restaurant and there was a machine in there dispensing pokemon cards for 50 cents...I thought "Sure why not" and got one - it ended up being a Dark Energy card instead of actually anything so I thought that was extremely funny
-We also went to Boston for a day - very pretty as well! I liked it way more than NYC to be honest. I had NO IDEA there were so many tunnels! Rained on us a ton though it cleared up by the time we did a bus tour. I am a big fan of brutalist architecture so I thought the one government building (the bus tour guide called it the Hurley building, I think) was REALLY cool. Wish I had gotten a picture of it but I was on the wrong side of the bus. Also: Bostonians, I am very sorry but your green line subway train makes possibly one of the worst sounds I've ever heard.
Tumblr media
I thought the top of this building, whatever it was, looked very neat. Very art deco.
Tumblr media
And this one with the dark windows forming triangle shapes. Not super exciting but I like this kind of thing
Tumblr media
Can't forget about the gothic cathedral
Tumblr media
Also spotted this cool unicorn at one point
-Uhh, what else did we do....after that we did actually do stuff in RI. Went to Ft Adams, went to Blithewold Manor, did a scenic ocean drive...I love how none of those Beachfront Home buying shows actually show the wild amount of traffic caused by people trying to get to the beach - parking whereever and blocking lanes constantly. I'd never live that close to the water to begin with as I'd be too afraid of flooding or my house falling in, but I had no idea how bad the traffic situation actually was. 8'D
-We did get a milkshake from Newport Creamery! I'm not normally a milkshake person but we tried them anyway and it was soooo good. Really enjoyed all the local chains in general.
-On the last day we did a lighthouse tour on a large catamaran and that was super awesome, I think it was one of my favorite parts of the trip. There was a Karen on our boat throwing multiple tantrums as the tour did not start fast enough for her liking but that just ended up being also extremely funny. The guy actually doing the tour was great and I'm actually quite curious about the history of the area, as I had no idea there were so many pirates o_o

Monday, September 4 - Boston
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We docked in Boston at the cruise port, far from downtown Boston, but had a shuttle to Quincy Market. We are sharing the port with another larger ship, but figure Boston is plenty big for all of us. We got on the first bus with only two other people and had a good chance to talk to our driver, who gave us a great description of the areas we passed through. I haven't been to Boston since the early 1990's, so it was a surprise to see the double decker I-93 highway gone and replaced by a tunnel, now covered with a park. Quite an improvement.
We had planned to walk the "Freedom Trail", which visits 16 places of historical importance in about 3-1/2 miles, and is easy to follow with a red brick stripe running down sidewalks, streets and through parks that points the way. First we had to get to Boston Commons, though, and were surprised at how quiet the streets were on the holiday, especially early in the morning. It wasn't that quiet by the time we reached the Commons and bought a guide map to all the sites along the trail. There were lots of tour groups - some of the guides were dressed in period costume - and for the next hour or so we kept running into the same groups. Because of the holiday (we think), many of the places like graveyards were closed, but we were able to visit Faneuil Hall, which was in the middle of the walk. Here there is a big statue of Samuel Adams, as well as a taproom for Samuel Adams brewing. Product placement is everything.
By now it was getting fairly warm, so we tried to find a shady route and keep the red line of bricks within sight, if not directly underfoot. We went into the North End, where there was Paul Revere's house, the old North Church and a statue of Paul on horseback. There were also these wonderful older buildings with semi-circular rooms on the fronts, and many Italian restaurants, part of the heritage of the North End.
The path eventually led us across the Charles River on a temporary bridge to the Charlestown neighborhood, which was once a separate town. Here we found Breed's Hill (more commonly known as Bunker Hill). We took a little respite from the heat in the visitor center there, since the monument itself was covered in scaffolding. From there we moved on to the last site - the USS Constitution, which was the highlight of the day.
She is the oldest commissioned warship still floating, has been lovingly restored, and is still manned by the US Navy. She was first launched in 1797, and saw service in the Barbary Wars, the War of 1812, and other duties before the Civil War, later becoming a training and barracks ship. She has been restored several times, the latest being between 1992 and 1996, and refit with sails, sailed under her own power again in 1997. The National Park Service is in charge of the visitor center, and it's free to wander about the ship, including below decks. It certainly gives me a new perspective on the books I've read set on sailing ships of this period, as they have fit out the captain's quarters, wardroom, officers' quarters, and other parts of the ship with period details.
By now, we were ready to head back, and after walking through some beautiful parts of Charlestown and then crossing back across the bridge, we opted to walk along more of the waterfront back to the Quincy Market area, and take the next to last shuttle. We had dinner out on the back deck of our ship as we backed out of the docking area, and were directly under the flight path into Logan Airport. By then it was dark, and we watched the city lights recede as we headed for tomorrow's destination - Newport, RI. It's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow (it was close to 90 and humid today), so we will see if we come close to hiking the eight miles we did today.
A couple of notes on pictures - Boston is in the middle of an art cow exhibition, with some wonderful entries, and some fairly lame ones. This Greek cow was quite well done, and had a partial seascape on the other flank. The little free library was the most elaborate we have seen. When we first went by it was all closed up from the night, but unfolds origami style during the day. The crane statue is on top of a fountain in the new city park in Charlestown, created after the big dig which moved the highway underground. While doing archaeology, they found the location and foundation stones of the historic Three Cranes Tavern, and included the stones in the base of the fountain.

This is probably too much sleuthing but here goes anyway. Clearly Steph and Erin flew by themselves but they were in Newport so since they went to Florida they probably just flew out of the Providence airport in RI. Sam and Kristie if they went to Boston and were going to Miami would leave from Logan in Boston so they would not have seen Steph beforehand. Anyway this is just to say it’s very possible they’re meeting up.
the kelly’s that was in erin’s story is only in boston logan so i think they flew out of boston. dont know what that means for sam and kristie

The USA's most artsy city is ...
Tumblr media
Providence, Rhode Island (CNN) — Providence, Rhode Island, is the biggest city in America’s smallest state, and it often gets lost between two of its neighbors, bustling Boston and elegant Newport. But coming to New England and skipping this city is a major travel mistake.
First things first: Providence is home to several incredible universities and colleges, most famously Brown University. Thanks to that, prices are affordable — except sometimes during parents’ weekend — and the community close-knit.
Tumblr media
Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and is often referred to by its airport code of PVD.
Shutterstock
The Rhode Island of School of Design (aka RISD, pronounced “Rizz-dee”) counts some of the world’s best artists and designers among its grads, while Johnson & Wales culinary school pumps out incredible chefs.
That rich culture makes Providence one of the USA’s most impressive cities for people who love the arts, which is even more significant considering its relatively small size.
While Lil’ Rhodey (the state’s loving nickname) doesn’t have a major opera or ballet company to call its own, the per-capita rate of art students, brilliant professors and champions of literature, public art and design in its capital city all add up to one hell of an experience.
Rising and shining
Tumblr media
Knead Doughnuts previews its new flavors on Instagram.

Your biggest problem in Providence might be narrowing down the sheer number of places where you want to eat.
That said, you won’t go wrong beginning a day at Knead Doughnuts in the downtown business district. The spot is classic when it comes to design (it’s in a former bank building) and styles (jelly doughnuts, fritters) but utterly modern when it comes to flavors and techniques. The brown butter-pecan and pistachio flavors are both musts, and there are lots of vegan and gluten-free options.
If you want to linger for your morning meal, check out The Duck & Bunny, a “snuggery” (the cafe’s word for place that is adorable and cozy) in the trendy Fox Point neighborhood.
There’s an emphasis on cupcakes and other sweet treats, but during the day, it’s a great option for settling in with a laptop or a good book. (Sad side note: there are no ducks. Or bunnies.)
Tumblr media
Besides sweets, The Duck & Bunny has an afternoon tea service and a cigar room.

On the somewhat healthier side, check out Yoleni’s, a Greek market-and-cafe concept inspired by Eataly. You can pick up freshly made baklava, blocks of feta or bottles of olive oil to go or settle in for a yummy Greek-yogurt parfait in the airy downtown space.

Beyond brunch
While Scorsese movies make it seem as if Italian-American communities have stuck to big cities such as Boston and New York City, there is a vibrant and well-established community in Providence.
To see the community in action, head to Federal Hill, where more than a dozen restaurants are lined up along the main drag of Atwells Avenue. The options can be a bit overwhelming, so keep an eye out for the upscale Enoteca Umberto’s, classic red sauce at Angelo’s and pizza at Caserta’s.
For dinner, try to get a table at Persimmon, the James Beard Award-nominated New American spot on the aptly named Hope Street.
While the menu changes often based on seasons and availability, there’s not a single bum note here. Persimmon has the best of New England’s farms — from sunchokes and onions to duck and Maine lamb — but is still cozy enough that you can ask what a menu item is without feeling embarrassed.
Providence’s best hotel is The Dean, and even if you’re not staying there, you should make the trip simply to eat at North.
This too-cool-for-school spot doesn’t have a phone number or take reservations, but if you can muscle your way in, the reward is Asian-inspired small plates such as sake-glazed bok choy, spicy “dragon wings” and oysters with nori mignonette.

Making a night of it? If you can find Courtland Club, which is inside an unassuming building on a residential street, you’ll be happily rewarded. The speakeasy-style bar has some of the most inventive cocktails in the country, with ingredients such as beet juice and basil foam somehow feeling accessible and delicious.
If your travels bring you through Providence regularly, consider investing in an annual membership — besides having the option to leave a beloved bottle of booze in a locker so you never have to haul it over yourself, there are periodic tasting nights and the one-off dinners with a guest chef.
One note: if it’s warm out in Rhode Island, you are contractually obligated to try a Del’s, which is a New England brand of frozen slushy lemonade. The green and white striped stands pop up throughout the state once it’s hot out, and some will sell peach or watermelon-flavored lemonades, too.
To truly feel like a local, you also can’t leave without a stop at one of the outposts of Newport Creamery, which is famous for its Awful Awful sundae with sprinkles inside it.
Enoteca Umberto’s, 256 Atwells Ave, Providence, RI 02903, +1 401 272-8466

Tumblr media
One of RISD’s most famous graduates is David Byrne of the Talking Heads — the band formed while the members were students there.

Get your first taste of the art and design scene in Providence at the RISD Museum, which has a huge collection of work from around the world, from Rembrandt drawings and Chinese lacquerware to an Eames chair and couture dresses by designers such as Balenciaga and McQueen.
Beyond the art, which could keep you busy all day, the building is also home to an outpost of locally beloved Bolt Coffee (the other is in The Dean) and a store that sells products made by RISD graduates, such as striped backpacks and totes from indie brand Baggu.
However, don’t let that be your only shopping stop. Along Westminster Street, there are several local boutiques, notably Craftland, which sells jewelry, home goods, stationery and more from local producers and designers, and light-filled Symposium Books, where you can stock up on new and vintage records and books.
Tumblr media
Colorful Craftland is like a real-life Etsy shop devoted to Rhode Island makers.

Providence is home to two breathtaking libraries, the Fleet Library at RISD and the nearby Providence Athenaeum, which is public.
The Fleet is in a stunning former bank building and is not only notable for its architecture but for its collection of rare art and architecture books, while the Athenaeum pays homage to writers with Rhode Island roots such as HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe.
To keep the theme of architecture and history going, head to the Rhode Island State House. This Neoclassical building was designed by the New York City firm of McKim, Mead & White, who are also known for the Boston Public Library and the Washington Square Arch in New York City.
Tumblr media
A plaque at the Athenaeum bears the names of famous horror fans, like Guillermo Del Toro, who chipped in to buy a plaque of Providence writer HP Lovecraft.
Shutterstock
There are free public tours of the building every hour during the week, although you should make a reservation if you are traveling in a group.
Among the must-sees are a Royal Charter from when Rhode Island was one of the 13 British colonies and the iconic Gilbert Stuart portrait of President George Washington. (You may recognize it from the one-dollar bill.)
The State House and Capitol are across the street from Providence’s central train station, making it super convenient as your first or last stop in town.

The great outdoors

Roger Williams Park is named for the state of Rhode Island’s founder.
Shutterstock
It’s not just arts and culture that make Providence so utterly livable. There are also green spaces that help balance out the city-to-country proportions.
First up: the 472-acre Roger Williams Park, which is known as “the people’s park” in Providence. Besides being, well, a park, the area is home to plenty of warm and cold weather options, including the Roger Williams Zoo, a botanic garden, a carousel, a planetarium and the Museum of Natural History.
Tumblr media
WaterFire began in Providence in the 1990s.
Shutterstock
During the warmer months, you can enjoy Providence’s waterways in two different, but both worthy, fashions. First is by taking a cruise along the Providence River, which provides not only an alternate viewpoint of the city’s best-known structures but also some necessary history and context, from Rhode Island’s colonial days through the World Wars to the present.
Finally, you can’t miss WaterFire.
This art show and public spectacle takes place along the city’s waterfront, where dozens of small fires are tended by “braziers,” creating a thrilling effect that makes it look like — you may have guessed — the water is on fire.
The only drawback? You may have to fight locals for the best spot to view it — even if they’ve been before, it feels new every time.

New Haven to Cape Cod via Quahog RI
Hi everyone It's a nice day for a drive eastward to Cape Cod.  Hopefully the weather will be cooperative. Saturday 26th June 2010 I drove eastward on I-95 from New Haven, Connecticut, to Truro, Massachusetts on Lower Cape Cod.  It took almost all day, but it did not matter as the moonrise was obscured by eventual cloud cover.
I woke up about 7:30 AM to have a shower and eat breakfast.  The West Haven CT police came around to ask about a suspicious guest, and questioned me for about half an hour.  I had nothing to do with the suspicious guest so they let me go.  I checked out about 9 AM or so, and headed east on I-95.  To be on the safe side, I stopped about twenty miles east of New Haven to fill up.  Gas was about $3.20 a gallon, and I had to put in about eight gallons.
I-95 in contrast to I-91, was a disappointment.  Between New Haven and Norwich or so, most of the section was two lane per direction and with a 55 mph / 90 km/h limit, and there was no passing on the right.  This would make the drive up to Mystic a bit of a nuisance.
I reached Mystic about 12:30 PM, hoping to go into town and eat at the Mystic Pizza restaurant.  I did find a free parking space in town, and had to walk half a mile to reach the pizza restaurant.  I ate a slice of pizza with a soft drink, and had a look at the pictures on the wall, photos of past guests and from the film based on the restaurant.
About 1 PM I went eastbound on I-95 to Providence, Rhode Island.  It took about twenty minutes from Mystic CT to reach the Rhode Island state line.  I had not been to Rhode Island since April 1993, and then I was only in Newport with family.  When I arrived in Providence, I went to the Angkor restaurant in Providence, in the Fox Point district (which I would probably refer to as Quahog, the fictitious location of the Family Guy cartoon), just a mile or so southeast of Brown University.  I had an order of beehoon noodles, sort of like vermicelli.  Then I drove past Brown University to the Rhode Island State House.  As it was Saturday, the State House was closed.  The State House was a little smaller than that of the one in Hartford, Connecticut.  The Amtrak station was within a quarter mile from the State House.
About 3 PM I drove eastward on I-195 through East Providence and crossed the Massachusetts state line.  I turned on some music, and it included a song by Maroon 5.  When I crossed through New Bedford, I heard on the radio that the USA was defeated by Ghana in that year's FIFA World Cup.  I was disappointed.  However I was making good progress towards Cape Cod.  About 4 PM I reached Wareham and US-6 to cross into Cape Cod.  After the Sagamore Bridge, there are no real freeways as such, just multilane highways and 60 mph / 95 km/h speed limits at best.  Some parts of US-6 are two-lane divided.
Just before 5 PM I reached the youth hostel in Truro.  It is off North Pamet Road, about a half mile east of US-6.  It is within a ten minute walk to Ballston Beach on the Atlantic Coast.  I checked in, placed my belongings on my bed, and then drove into Provincetown on US-6.  I wanted to visit the Pilgrim Monument but was not sure about climbing it.  I let the staff know that I was going to try to reach the top.  The Pilgrim Monument does not have conventional stairs, but rather ones that are a few feet long.  I think it might be at least twenty stories high.  When I was at the top, I looked over Provincetown and felt a bit like Rocky Balboa on the steps of the Museum of Art in Philadelphia.  Then I came down.  It was about 6:30 PM and nearly time for the moon to rise.
I drove to the Race Point Beach so that I could see the moon rise on the Atlantic.  Sadly the clouds were getting too thick for it to be possible.  The tide was low but not at its full ebb.  I spent about fifteen minutes there before going into town.
Provincetown was having a Portuguese festival.  I was going to eat dinner at Michael Shay's that night, but I was curious about the Portuguese snacks.  I bought a pastel de nata, and a linguica bread.  The proper "prego no pao" (nail in the bread) was sold out.  After exploring Provincetown, I drove to Michael Shay's.  Someone in the parking lot mentioned to me that I probably should install some whistling device as they could not hear the Prius.  Dinner at Michael Shay's was good.  I had a salad, a steak and a Sam Adams beer.  After that I drove to the hostel, used my laptop with the hostel's wifi, and then went to bed.  I wanted to go for a swim on the beach so I set my alarm for 5:30 AM the next morning.
Next story:  Morning on the Atlantic, the Provincetown Causeway, Plymouth Rock, drive through Brocktown and MA-24, a wrong turn on I-90, checking the car back in to the Logan Airport car rental agency, the Quincy Market with Faneuil Hall and dinner in Boston's "Littlest Bar" on Broad Street near the New England Aquarium.  Hope you will join me then.

Data drives Amazon’s shortlist of 20 cities for HQ2
Amazon’s shortlist of cities that stand a chance to host HQ2 may have arisen out of many factors and the data stacks them in different ways.
The nation’s capital looks like a favorite to land Amazon’s second North American headquarters.
Amazon showed 218 cities, counties, states and provinces the door, cutting the list of eligible suitors for its second home down to 20 Thursday morning, and three of the spots left standing are in the Washington, D.C. area. GeekWire co-founder John Cook put D.C. at the top of his list of remaining cities with the best shot of landing the Seattle-based tech giant.
But the data may say otherwise.
Following the initial announcement of the HQ2 sweepstakes, we ranked top contenders based on the information in Amazon’s request for proposals, and today we’re going back to the data to see how the remaining suitors stack up.
Our top three data-driven candidates to land HQ2 are Toronto, Boston and Philadelphia. D.C. comes in sixth in our ranking.
Toronto was a popular pick in the GeekWire newsroom soon after HQ2 was announced. Boston has been rumored as a favorite since the beginning. Philadelphia would be a little more of a peculiar choice, but it sits along the same East Coast corridor as many of the other shortlisted areas while providing a more affordable alternative to places like Boston and New York.
Here are the four main criteria that Amazon sets out in its HQ2 RFP, along with the data we pulled to quantify each one and why.
Metropolitan areas with more than one million people: This is the easiest one to quantify, and we looked at population in millions, based on US Census Bureau via Wikipedia
A stable and business-friendly environment: Let’s assume that business taxes are a reasonable proxy. We grabbed state/province business tax rankings from Tax Foundation and The Conference Board of Canada to measure the business climate in each metro area.
Urban or suburban locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent: This speaks to both education level as well as tech talent in each area. To rank these requirements, we looked at CBRE’s tech talent report and university degree attainment percentages from Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program via New York Times and Statistics Canada
Communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options: This one is a little more outside the box and subjective. To get at this requirement we added home prices via data from National Association of Realtors and Canadian Real Estate Association and transit rankings from WalkScore.
The city of Toronto. (BigStock Photo)
Based on the data, here’s how the cities still standing in the HQ2 race rank. One caveat: we based our original analysis on metro areas, and some locations — like the three Washington, D.C.-area submissions and New York-New Jersey — are part of the same metro area. Continue reading for more analysis of those spots.
Toronto
Boston
Philadelphia
Chicago
Atlanta
Washington, D.C.
Denver
Pittsburgh
Austin
Raleigh
New York
Indianapolis
Dallas
Miami
Columbus
Nashville

To be sure, some of our data-driven top picks from our first round of analysis in September didn’t make the cut. Four of our top 10 didn’t advance, and a few of Amazon’s top picks were on the bottom of our list.

One of the more surprising things to come out of the shortlist was the multiple locations in the same region bidding against one another. It is unclear how this will affect the final bidding process, but it’s easy to imagine respective mayors and other elected officials engaging in intra-regional competitions to offer more incentives and tax breaks.
In the Washington, D.C., region, three areas are under consideration: D.C. proper, Northern Virginia and Montgomery County in Maryland. All three of these areas share a few things in common. They all receive the bulk of their travelers from the region’s two main airports — Dulles and Ronald Reagan, both located in Virginia. The region’s subway system serves all three areas, with all routes leading into D.C.
But each area offers its own advantages. D.C., of course, is where all the political and economic action happens. Some have argued that Bezos — who quietly built an empire hiding in the rain-soaked shadows of Seattle — will need to elevate his persona as Amazon enters its next chapter, and D.C. is the place to do that. Bezos also owns The Washington Post, and he just bought a $23 million home in D.C.

Northern Virginia makes a lot of sense if the purpose of HQ2 is to eventually spin off Amazon Web Services. That area is well known as a data center hub, and Amazon last year announced plans to build a new East Coast campus in Northern Virginia. The area is also home to a huge hub for the U.S. Department of Defense and an abundance of cybersecurity talent, a must have as massive cyberattacks become increasingly more common.
Montgomery County in Maryland is the only county-level proposal to make the cut. Encompassing the northern suburbs of D.C., the area is home to a wealthy, well-educated population. Its top employers are also U.S. government agencies, and the region is also the headquarters for hotel giant Marriott, a plus if Amazon envisions hosting a lot of visitors from around the world at a Montgomery County HQ2.
In the New York-New Jersey cluster, Amazon is basically choosing between talent and tax incentives. Both areas draw from the same airports generally — La Guardia, JFK and Newark. Prior to the HQ2 response deadline, New Jersey publicized an offer of more than $7 billion in incentives that included significant property and wage tax breaks as well as subsidies for every job created.
New York City boasts the nation’s largest tech workforce outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. Amazon already has a significant presence in the Big Apple, and makes sense as a destination as the retail giant continues to dive deeper into fashion.

TWENTY SEVENTEEN.
What a year.
A year of growth, love, heartache, identity, learning, happiness, travel, challenges, friendship, and everything in between.
I began the year in Colorado, celebrating the new year with the Siegerts - snowboarding at Loveland, hiking the mountains after a blizzard, and four wheeling around their yard.
From there I returned home to enjoy more crazy nights with the babe cave and focused on school and growing my art during awkward seasonal change. I became closer with Bree and visited Jess at her pageant by my self in Onalaska.
I was feeling a need for change and cut my hair in half on January 22nd. I did it myself and felt extremely clean, but was very nervous. I feel like doing this at the beginning of the year was a reflection of what would come with the year. Being so used to something, then taking my own scissors to it, letting go, and learning how to start fresh and learn to accept the new.
I began to work closer with KJP as a remote intern. I was hired to do a valentines day photoshoot with Marin. We got a free night at the Charmant Hotel and my photos were admired by KJP, Jeremy, and Sarah themselves.
Jake came to visit La Crosse for the first time. We did an escape room and I showed him around for a few days. He sent my a dozen roses and a long letter for Valentines Day. During this time I was scrambling to find a way to get out of UWL for a semester and applied to be in NSE.
Kelsey and I had the privilege to watch Theresa Caputo live at Mystic, and it opened my eyes to heaven, loved ones, and how fragile and special life is.
I visited TCU and met the infamous house puppy. We made home cooked meals and visited an art museum together.
In March I took another trip to Ixtapa, my 11th time I believe, with my family, Haley, and Maya. We took amazing photos, partied on a  private boat, and the BVG staff treated us to four coconuts with hibiscus flowers. It was here that I got the shocking news that I was placed at Rhode Island College.
After that, Jake visited again and we went north to my cabin. We played in the put-put tournament and spent time with the aunts and uncles.
I started working on an app called Sipp and won an entrepreneurship award. I helped with marketing, strategy, and went to meetings with lawyers and owners of restaurants. I had drinks with executives and was in conversation with the marketing department of Brothers. This was a huge part of my spring semester.
Then I went to TCU again for Jake’s last SigEp formal. We dressed to the nines and partied with all of their friends. We had dinner in downtown Fort Worth in a skyscraper and drank lots of drinks. This was an absolute blast.
Finally spring rolled around and I turned 21! Finally! After a year of having to be cautious, I could finally go out downtown. I had the biggest surprise of my life that day, when Jake walked into my party and gave me the biggest hug. I still can’t believe that happened. Haley chauffeured him down and we got a short 20 hours together.
Immediately after my last final, I flew to TCU to spend the weekend with the Siegerts and watch Jake graduate. It was a very exciting weekend with so much joy. We spent time with Yvonne and her kids, and partied the celebration away at the local bars. Dick and Lisa took us out to an insanely expensive dinner and we laughed and did high-low-ha’s around the table.
From there, Jake and I drove all of his belongings up through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and into Nebraska. We were greeted at the lake house with an incredible sunset and a new boat to take a cruise on. After bike rides and lots of cards, we drove through Iowa into Minnesota to spend time with my family. We took a tour of Summit Brewery and Jake met my hometown friends at the speakeasy. We took photos together with Whitley and went to a Twins game. It was amazing. Little did I know that this would be the last time I saw him.
Over Memorial weekend I went to the cabin for one last piece of MN before I took off onto the biggest adventure of my life thus far.
Rhode Island.
I’m still not sure how to put all of this and my emotions into words, but here’s my best shot. I arrived at the airport alone with my things and got picked up by Jeremy. We immediately drove to Massachusetts to check up on the sweaters they were about to launch. I went to the factory and met Kiel, Sarah, and Dave, and then was sent to my hotel room in downtown Providence. I had no idea what was going on.
The next day I found myself on the southern coast of Rhode Island with my feet in the sand, saying a big hello to the Atlantic ocean. The beach was empty and I walked around for a bit. This was the day I met Sophie and us three bonded over how much we despised the landlord of our new home.
We moved in and for the week I drove to the factory in Jeremy’s station wagon Mercedes. I got the feeling for URI, Narragansett, and hung out with Taylor Pennell. This is when I met Newport. I explored around Jamestown by myself and instantly fell in love with Beavertail State Park. I took a weekend trip home to shoot a beautiful wedding in Duluth. Jake and I began having distance issues at this point because we didn’t know when we would see each other next. Jake was beginning a new 60 hour/wk job, and I couldn’t leave on weekends due to KJP events.
I was so excited to return to RI, where I spent time building the new store, starting to be a part of photoshoots and then met Merle. That weekend I had the privilege to meet Cape Cod with the KJP crew. They threw a huge party with the Keel Vodka people and I finally got to show off my skills. We ate oysters, drank way too much champagne and ran around the hotel like kids. Kiel treated us to sushi and took us bar hopping. It was insane, in the best way. On this trip we met Abbey and Windsor, two bloggers from Boston that invited us to visit.
Made it to Boston. It was a quick day trip, but they were determined to give us the best experience. Dave and I went with Charlie and his girlfriend Katie. We walked around the entire city, took the subway just to say we did it, made it to little italy and got to see all of the historic sites. SUCH a cool city. Ended the trip there with a sunset on a pier overlooking the skyline.
A few days later I walked in the house to see two people that I’d only known from photos and texts for the last two years. Erick Dent and Jacob True. I had no idea how much these people were about to change my perspective on living. I walked in the door and was immediately shocked at how tall Erick was when he gave me a hug, I had the absolute biggest smile on my face. I remember shaking because this day had been talked about for so many years and it was finally happening. It’s a very unique feeling to have known someone for so long, and then finally meet in person and see them in your living room. Starstruck is my best way to explain it. We had dinner at my favorite restaurant in town, The Coast Guard House. There was an incredible sunset, we ate right on the water with the salty air, and watched a baby whale play in the bay.
From there, we woke up at sunrise to capture the morning rising over the Atlantic. We all sat at the Point Judith cliff, waved hello to the sun, and took lots of photos. From there we walked out on the Jetty’s and watched Erick fly fish and catch one! Days from here consisted of several trips to Newport, where we would eat meals at The Landing and get Daiquiris. The first day we all ordered one, we were crying laughing because we were drunk off life and some pink smoothies. It was so. much. fun.
Our group took the old cars to Second Beach in Newport where we got to hang out at the Newport Film Festival for the first time. Kiel had a sponsored post for Land Shark, and they were just starting to release their “Newport” crewnecks so we spent a lot of time on the beach shooting. Sarah was pregnant so she sat back in the cars with Sophie, Jeremy, and Merle. Once the sun started to set and the documentary (Under An Arctic Sky by Chris Burkard) was about to begin, Erick pulled me aside and motioned towards the beach. The two of us ran barefoot out to the beach, where it was empty except for a few lifeguard chairs. It was our first real second alone together and it was such a fun time to catch up and finally get to shoot together after so many years. We ran up to the lifeguard stand and took photos with the sunset and he let me wear his hat. I remember my jaw dropping and being so excited because nobody had taken such cool photos of me before. It was one of my favorite moments of the summer.
The next day we all went out to shoot a bit, watched some more fly fishing, and we found crabs all over the rocks! We picked them up and took fun photos and videos with them. We took more trips to Point Judith for sunsets and Crazy Burger runs with Dave’s friend Charlie Turchetta. One day we went out of our way to take photos of the KJP bracelets because we knew it would make Kiel happy. We searched all over for fun props to use, but we couldn’t find anything. Jacob and I walked with our heads down back to Erick on the rocks, where he stood with live starfish in his hand. We flipped. Well, I flipped. We ended up finding at least 15 of them and got the most fun photos ever. I could feel them all moving on my legs, and I was at an all time high.
The Eno’s were set up from the tree to the car almost every day when we got home. All of the roommates would sit outside, telling stories, editing, listening to music, drinking, and swinging. We spent so much time soaking up our little Fortin yard, I will never take that place for granted. It gave us so many conversations, laughs, and “little” moments.
Somewhere in here, Erick broke up with Olivia and we sat out on the rocks in front of the coast guard house several nights in a row for HOURS just talking about anything and everything. It was so peaceful. We watched tides rise and fall.
The day before Dave’s birthday, we got to take Kiel and Sarah’s spots at the Oliver Hazard Perry Newport Owners event. We had a strict dress code, and walked up to a booth where our names were on the list. Immediately after arrival we were greeted with pear champagne and lots of old rich people. Needless to say, we were way out of place. But damn was that one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. This was the day I found out Erick liked me. We had a wonderful dinner as a band played for all of us. We were a little past tipsy at this point and all began to dance. I taught Erick how to dance and it was such a blast. We sat down at a high top to take a breather and an older woman walked up to us, looks at Erick, and says “You’re a lucky guy.”
On Dave’s birthday, Erick bought us all tickets to go to Block Island. We woke up early, and rented mopeds as we arrived to the island. We drove them all over with the wind blowing in our hair and the bright green bluffs surrounding us. We stopped at all the local beaches, and then biked to the final bluffs. Wow, was that a view. The stairway to the ocean left me speechless. We walked all along the rocky beach and just enjoyed each other’s company. We ended the day with Coldstone and a trip to the local bar.
A few days before the 4th, we watched fireworks with thousands of other people off the Jamestown bay with the Newport bridge lit up in the background and a massive American flag blowing in the wind. The real 4th was spent first at Carlton’s lake, wake boarding and taking a dip in the water. From there we all went to Kiel’s and had a huge float party, lit fireworks off the dock, drank with friends, and I said cheers to the first month of my summer in RI.
I spent July at home with my family, shooting weddings and seniors back to back to make some extra money. My 420 roommates visited MN for a day and I got to enjoy a lunch with them at Starks. I saw Bree again, and spent more time at the cabin with my family singing and dancing our asses off at birdies.
At the end of July, I picked Erick and Jacob up from the MSP airport so they could help me shoot a wedding. We took a quick stop at the cabin to shoot some Great Lakes swimsuits at the mine pits. From there we made the long road trip back to RI.
It started in La Crosse, where the boys met the girls and we took some photos at granddads. We then drove to Chicago and spent a night there. Most of the time was spent walking around admiring the city and shooting. The next day we drove 13 hours straight back to Rhode Island and tried not to go crazy in the car.
