In this photo: false sunflower (helianthus helianthoides), purple coneflower (echinacea purpurea), wild bergamot (monarda fistulosa), an aster (the pink aster to the left of the flopped echinacea), goldenrod (ha if I knew the species I'd play the lottery), and the 2 grasses that I know, wild rye (Elymus virginicus) and side oats Grama (bouteloua curtipendula).

The tall false sunflowers create an impenetrable canopy of shade, and the grasses and other flowers can only exist on the margins. There is 1 orange butterfly milkweed that exists on the far end, and there is a dark purple aster on the far end as well.

ok ok experimenting with the idea of succession-blooming native plant "lawn". i fully expect to have to look for or even select for traffic tolerance. cant have it all, yk? anyway. plants i'm considering so far:

Viola species (i think there are about 12 to pick from local, could go wild and plant em all in their respective microclimates)

Class 5: Turf Selection & Maintenance; Benefits of Turf

While there are various culturally ingrained ideas about what turf, or lawn, should look like, which greatly limit the common socially acceptable definition of "Turf Grass" ... "Turf Grass" is defined as any grass- wild or cultivated- that can withstand routine mowing (simulated grazing) of between 1 and 3 inches, at least once monthly; and which can withstand regular foot traffic or other activities.

You can remove turf (especially if you do not want invasive grasses) but you do still need some kind of low growing grass that can withstand mowing.

Tall grasses that cannot withstand regular mowing are not turf grasses, nor are they adequate substitutes / replacements for turf replacement.

Turf is not useless. It provides erosion protection and soil stabilization, dust reduction, reduction of topsoil loss, noise control, and glare reduction. It also provides safe recreational space, as well as defensible space against pests, and fire protection.

Not all turf grasses are invasive. There are native grasses that qualify as turf grasses.

Buffalograss (Bouteloua Dactyloides), Blue Grama (Bouteloua Gracilis), Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua Curtipendula), and Inland Saltgrass (Distichlis Spicata) are all examples of native Oklahoma turf grasses.

Temperate Grassland

So my Biology teacher has allowed me to make a Tumblr post about a biome of my choosing, but I was unable to use the work time allotted because I was in South Dakota. So, I'm making this at the last minute (because one, making a Tumblr post for school sounds insanely cursed, and two, missing assignments are one of my greatest fears, up there with heights, spiders, and public speaking) and have decided to focus on the biome which South Dakota falls under: temperate grasslands

Where are temperate grasslands?

Generally speaking, temperate grasslands can be found in North America and Eastern Europe (countries like Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, and so on and so forth. In the simplest terms, ).

What are the characteristics of temperate grasslands?

The key feature of temperate grasslands is, of course, the grass. There are large, open areas of grass with only a few, sparse trees here or there. Precipitation (rainfall) is moderate and wildfires are often, which is sustainable enough for large expanses of grass, but not enough for forests. The soil is fertile, the summers are warm, and the winters are cold. Not a half bad place to live, all things considered.

For starters, look at it! If you ask me, that is nothing short of beautiful. Plus, having just been to a temperate grassland (again, South Dakota), the weather is pretty much always what you'd expect from the season. You can count on it to be hot in summer, pretty mild in spring, cold in autumn, and snowy in winter, if you're like me and love snow.
