I didn't really get it. Did the movie make more money than expected?
Hi, anon!
The numbers I saw earlier this week fluctuated between a $16mil to $20mil opener. So I wouldn’t say it made more than expected, necessarily. It’s probably on track to make back it’s original budget. But as the snippet I posted pointed out, the opening weekend numbers could be due to the overexposure that came with all the drama (the stunt included).
It will be interesting to see if it continues to grow at the box office now that Harry fans and the curious general movie goer have given it a watch. Usually for that to happen, you need extremely good word of mouth from both critics and general audiences as well as a non-competitive box office. The most recent example of this I can think of is A24’s ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ that had a $25mil budget and made $100+ after it kept getting extended theater releases due its exception reception. It even when head to head with Marvel’s Doctor Strange and still performed incredibly well due to how much people loved it (myself included).
DWD doesn’t really have that working for it at the moment now since reviews across the board reviews are poor and we’re about to go into holiday film releases. That’s where the real Oscar contenders are going to make their debut and quickly overshadow it.

The Color Purple being the one musical movie within the past few years to actually be successful at the box office is SO well deserved. It’s such an incredible movie that I really really really want to watch again!

Yeah, I will admit that the MCU's had a bit of a shaky year, but I'm not off the train just yet
Sure, Quantumania was disappointing, and Secret Invasion flat out sucked, but The Marvels was fun (yes, i liked it, fuck off), Loki season 2 was great, and Guardians 3 was about as close to perfect as these films get.
And I'm definitely looking forward to What If...? season 2, and the stuff coming out next year like Echo and Deadpool 3.

i FUCKING hate that i can't look up basic information anymore because all I get is generative articles that either a. are so poorly written that it was clear the prompt included a "pad for read-time" line or b. are just misinformation pulled from bad sources cause bad data equals bad results and algorithms can't tell the difference. OR fuck it more likely both. this generative shit has poisoned the well on basic facts like "what was the budget for this movie". can't imagine how bad it is if you are trying to do more complicated research.

i feel bad for animators at pixar who poured hours of their lives into something that they more than likely weren’t fairly compensated for just for their movie to come out and get absolutley obliterated by both critics and all five people who went to go see it . that being said i won’t be seeing it either

I really feel like opening weekend is almost all it’s going to get in total. And I do wonder if it’ll actually hit that projected target of 21. I just don’t see it bringing in much more than this initial fan run and views from curiosity seekers. Whatever it makes, I wouldn’t deem it a success in any way. It’s made a shitty laughingstock of everyone but basically Flo (And the support cast because even the director ignored them).
Totally agree, anon. I think that’s the general consensus from those of us that are looking at these particular stats.
And oof, you’re not kidding with your last point. I can’t imagine Warner Bros will consider this a success considering how deep in the hole they are right now. From a financial stand point, even breaking even on the original budget looks like a bust.
For the cast themselves, no. Olivia has completely discredited herself as a Director. Her next film would have to be 100% devoid of any personal tabloid fodder and basically be a Scorsese-level Oscar contender for her to find any sort of redemption as a viable Filmmaker. This is how it is for women in a Hollywood to be taken seriously anyway and she short herself in the foot because she’s 1. addicted to the paparazzi and 2. lacks the actual creative talent or drive to deliver something like that. She’s fucked there. She’s welcome prove me wrong though (she won’t).
Harry’s acting skills have been mocked mercilessly, he’s been labeled a queer-baiting home wrecker, and is still very publicly affiliated with a proven liar (the Shia video should’ve been the end, jfc). The general public feels validated in their assessment of him. He’s also gonna have to give a performance that’s basically Oscar worthy in his next role if he wants to continue to take on serious, complex characters. Unfortunately he doesn’t do that in My Policeman and a Marvel movie won’t cut it either. So the next project is going to have to be chosen VERY carefully. And again, he’s gonna need to stay out of the tabloids for anyone to take him seriously. If he continues to be connected to Olivia, that’s never gonna happen because again…She can’t help herself.
Florence Pugh is definitely the winner here. She has her next film debuting on Netflix later this year (The Wonder, which also debuted at TIFF) and already got great reviews for it. But her performance in DWD wasn’t panned by critics anyway so yes, she’s fine.
Maybe it’s a blessing for the rest of the cast that they were essentially ignored. Kiki Layne posted today:
Tumblr media
But gave nothing to DWD. I think Gemma Chan posted the same IG story Harry posted but not much else. And who can blame them?

So I finally got around to seeing the new Pixar movie, Elemental, and it's pretty great actually? Like, I know the marketing made it look very generic. The trailers seem to give the whole movie away, make you feel like you've not only already seen this movie, you've seen it a dozen times. But believe me, that's not true. There's a lot more going on with the main character and her relationship to her family and her culture and the pressure she's under as a second generation immigrant trying to honor the sacrifices her parents made for her sake. And the love interest water guy who seems so deeply mediocre in the trailers actually has a lot more going for him as well, putting so much effort in and so much on the line. Like, yes, it's a different-worlds odd-couple romance with a kind of strained racial / immigrant metaphor, but it's a really good and earnest and heartwarming version of that.
And it Just Looks Breathtaking - the colors, the use of transparency, the water and fire effects especially, the way the characters are always flickering or bubbling or flowing, every part of them always in motion even when they're standing still. If you're an animation fan you'll be watching it in awe wondering 'how is that even possible', which, I mean after having the same feelings watching Spiderverse 2, it really is a rich summer for animation.
Sure, from a business perspective Elemental looks like such an obvious mistake. And maybe from that angle it was. I mean, to spend so much money on an original movie with an honestly rather subdued plot and concept - like, there's a reason romance movies are generally relatively low budget affairs - and then to throw it up against Spiderverse 2 of all things? The executives at Disney are out of their goddamn minds. But as irrational as Elemental's budget might have been, every penny of it is on display. If you're an animation fan you really shouldn't miss the chance to see it on the big screen
