Art Objects
I often see ‘objects’ on my walks – art in a way but not always paintings, but not merely something tossed away – things placed with a purpose but not always clear what that purpose is lol.
a domino?
a domino? in context

laneway balcony moon and sun
empty paintbox
bike on a pipe

Incanto Mettalum (Enchanting Metal)
Irish Connemara slate, circuit board, copper found object, brass found object, brass escutcheon pins, steel found object, cast brass, aluminum leaf
12¾"x 12¼"x 1¾"
This piece started out as a demo for a student who wanted to learn how to do mixed-media works. The floating circuit board was fitted over the recess cut into the slate. Then other demo pieces were done while this piece remained unfinished for over two years. When I finally returned to work on it a couple of weeks ago I thought I would add several different materials but as I worked on it I decided I would limit myself to metal elements only. I began selecting from my drawer full of metal found objects — part of an antique railroad lamp acquired in 1997 which I had then partially patined 15 years ago, a piece of cable left over from the power company’s installation in my front yard of the underground electrical supply for the new 2021 house across the street, a piece of steel splatter from the welding table in the art school’s sculpture studio from 2005 or so, a wedge cut from the upper surface of a brass ingot I had cast from re-melted scrap miscut keys thirty-six years ago as a grad student — these were the elements finally used. The sandblasting and aluminum leaf were finishing touches before I had to figure out the title. After several hours of reading about the etymology of many words having to do with metal I narrowed it down to the Latin phrase that roughly translated to ‘the enchantment of metal.’
The work is currently on exhibit in the 2022 Faculty and Staff Visual Art Exhibit at GSU Perimeter College art gallery through September.
