Hello and welcome to my 2023 reading wrap up! A big Thank You to everyone who followed my ramblings throughout the year! <3 I will continue through 2024. Maybe I'll learn how to write proper reviews, at least I'll try to remember better what I actually want to say about the stories. In 2022, I read 93 books plus my own. Guess how many it were in 2023? 93 plus my own!! xD That was huge coincidence and I love it. Of these 94 books, 4 are rereads (which won't be included in the "Favourite" sections), 2 are non-fiction, 11 are non-queer. I only DNFed 1 book (which is not pictured) and other than that I only disliked 6 books! (And it's a pretty soft dislike in comparison. I don't hate them nearly enough to want to shit on them again. :'D).
So on the the awards!
Most Read Author: KJ Charles (8 books)
Least Favourite Book: Daresh (Katja Brandis) (the one I could not finish for dear life)
Favourite Character: Brand (The Tarot Sequence) and Will (The Will Darling Adventures) (yes, there's a trend)
Favourite Covers (of books I read, not releases):
Tumblr media
(There were too many. D:)
Highest Emotional Investment (aka The Agony, the suffering, the why you do this to me Award): Dark Heir - The Scottish Boy - In Memoriam
Wildest Story: The Adventures of Pinocchio
Favourite Books:
The Devil's Luck (L.S. Baird)
The Scottish Boy (Alex de Campi)
In Memoriam (Alice Winn)
Just Lizzie (Karen Wilfried)
Dark Heir (C.S. Pacat)
The Will Darling Adventures (KJ Charles)
Gwen & Art are not in Love (Lex Croucher)
The Buried and the Bound (Rochelle Hassan)
More Books I enjoyed greatly:
Oracle of Senders series (Mere Joyce)
Of Feathers and Thorns (Kit Vincent)
Wren Martin Ruins it all (Amanda deWitt)
Simon Snow series (Rainbow Rowell)
The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley (Shaun David Hutchinson)
The Tarot Sequence (K.D. Edwards)
The First and Last Adventure of Kit Sawyer (S.E. Harmon)
Sixteen Souls (Rosie Talbot)
By any Other Name (Erin Cotter)
The High King's Golden Tongue (Megan Derr) and more!!
Most Used Name: I counted names last year and didn't want to do it again this year because I read so much fantasy, so the names were all over. Still, there was one who stood out amongst them all with at least 4 instances, if not more. Probably more.
Will
Congratulations. I have to admit, I've always liked that name. My favourite character of all times and part of my one and only OTP is named Will as well and I kinda hope the last book of their second trilogy never comes because it will probably make me scream and ... ...
Bonus! This year, I counted pages! Because I felt that most books were much shorter than what I read before. So I wanted to know. Turns out, my feeling was wrong. My 93 books had a whole of 33011 pages which results in approximately 350 pages per book. That's pretty normal I dare say.
That's it for 2023! I had a very good year in books. I wanted to read less actually, and failed spectacularly because I had too much fun. And if anyone's wondering how I read so much, I read fast and I just didn't do anything else in my free time. Escapism to the max. I hope, the new year treats you well! I hope, you have fun with the books you read! Let's meet again soon! <3

Fortnight of Books: 2023
Day 1:
Overall - best books read in 2023?
non-fiction -
Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Changed the World by Tom Holland
Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton
these two paired together so well--the one as a historical overview, the other addressing the conclusions
Grandmother's Garden: The Old-Fashioned American Garden 1865-1915 by May Brawley Hill
art and flowers and cameos by people I'd heard of in other contexts
fiction -
Starflower by Anne Elisabeth Stengel
The World's Greatest Detective by Caroline Carlson
Green Dolphin Street by Elizabeth Goudge
hey, look, I managed some variety in the fiction category!
Best series you discovered in 2023?
I had to dig through my reading list to discover that I did, in fact, read some new series and not just rereads
The City Between by W. R. Gingell (it feels like an old favorite already, okay)
Skyriders by Polly Holyoke (it's supposed to become a series, anyway, and I would like more flying horses please and thank you)
Best reread of the year?
lots of rereads means lots of contenders...
Dragonwitch and Golden Daughter by Anne Elisabeth Stengel
The Scottish Chiefs by Jane Porter

~ " - BRAWLEY LOOP WITH HUNTING SCENES - Silver plate handle with a lioness hunting scene - provenance Rome cm 36.5 - Kg 1.4 - 2/3 m. not. - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA - acquired in 1906. The hinge is made by injection molding, the details are added by chisel engraving. The leaf gilding is limited to a few details, such as the leaves of the trees, the bridles and manes of the horses, the cloaks of the hunters. The decoration consists of a hunting scene: two hunters on the sides of a large tree, in the center, attack with their spears a lioness hunted by a dog; rocks, saplings and tree trunks mark the landscape. The scene is framed by the protomes of a lion, a goat and an eagle." ~

● yay John Henry and Bumblebee! ● that went fast ● 👏👏👏
Synopsis: On a railway in Arizona, the Army has set up a blockade. As the Astrotrain approaches, the commander gives the order to fire. However, the Astrotrain is moving too fast for them, and barrels right through the blockade.
Elsewhere, Tobias Muldoon, the Merriweathers and Mark Twain are driving Standford's private train as fast as they can, to intercept the Decepticons. They pull into a station to take on coal and water, and spot "one peculiar-looking locomotive". They confront Bumblebee, John Henry, and the Autobots, but they all quickly realize they are on the same side, and the two teams join forces. The telegraph operator at the station, seeing the mechanized giants, telegraphs his boss, Jacob Lee Bonaventure, with the news. Bonaventure is aboard the Astrotrain, but isn't worried, as he has faith that Starscream has plans for this eventuality. And, indeed, as Bonaventure and Vanfleet watch, Scourge deploys from one of the boxcars, taking on his alternate mode of an armed blimp, and sets off to intercept the Autobots.
Aboard Merriweather's private train, Merriweather and Twain commiserate about the joys of fatherhood while shoveling coal into the engine. Aboard Bumblebee, Henry and Muldoon talk about the difference between Autobots and Decepticons (while shoveling coal), until Cletus notices Scourge approaching. Scourge begins to drop bombs, so the two trains speed toward the protection of a tunnel. Muldoon runs back over the tops of the Autobots, concerned about Kitty on the following train, but is halted when Sideswipe (or possibly Ironhide, see Errors, below) partially transforms out of boxcar mode, and shoots holes in Scourge. The two trains make it to the tunnel (and Tobias makes it to Kitty) just as Scourge collides with the cliff above the tunnel, and explodes. Stanford states that he now fully approves of Tobias's interest in Kitty.
As Bumblebee and the rest of the Autobots emerge from the tunnel, a shell strikes the cliff overhead, blocking the tunnel entrance with boulders. Merriweather's private train and its passengers are trapped inside. The Autobots set to work clearing the rubble. Some distance away, Starscream orders another salvo of artillery. Prowl and Ratchet direct the debris-clearing work, mentioning that there are humans and Autobots inside. The next round strikes several of the Autobots directly, temporarily incapacitating them, and John Henry and Bumblebee set off alone to stop the Decepticons. The Astrotrain resumes his progress, but Bumblebee manages to catch up on an adjoining track. He gets ahead of the Astrotrain, and Henry uses his hammer to flip a switch, directing the Astrotrain, the Decepticons, Bonaventure, and Vanflint over a cliff, presumably to fall to their destruction.
Later, John Henry, Brawley, and Cletus clear enough rocks to free the Merriweathers, Muldoon, and Twain. The Autobots have already left, to return to their slumber, and to resume their war in the future.

Can't do anything. Exhausted.
Trump attacks Kamala. Calls her a bum. Calls her garbage. No surprise there.
Pondering this trip: So much money being burned through. So much food being left behind at restaurants. (Too much to do. Doggybagging it was out.)
Saturday, July 27, 2024
Very slowly coming back to life.
Trump tells Christian group that if they vote in the next election they won't have to vote again (!). Says it will "be fixed." Meaning, if he wins he's there to stay. Sounds Putinesque.
So glad to get out of that intense Nevada heat.
Sunday, July 28, 2024
The Trumpists have perfected the art of never answering a question. Tom Cotton Yale educated yokel, of which there are several) is asked about the Trump remark about never having to vote again to the roomful of gullible Christians. He says Trump was making a joke. (We are supposed to know when he's being sarcastic.) Says Trump was trying to say something like: the nation will be a paradise when he is back in the White House.
Do my usual errands. Weater hot and humid but not at all like Vegas.
Monday, July 29, 2024
Hot and humid but not at all like Vegas. I am very slow to unpack.
Errands. Later, a beer with Roger at D J Reynolds. We are practically the only ones there.
Note: Kamala has not yet chosen a running mate. Trump is not keen to debate her (heavens no). He goes on and on about how dumb she is. That's his style.
Note: Being away I missed reading the Times obits (what my friend calls the Irish sports pages; oftenthe best writing in the paper). I find the name William Hardy. One of Sharptbn's lawyers who made the news during the Tawana Brawley mess. A handsome man (I once found myself standing next to him on a subway platform) I was not surprised that he aspired to be an actor. We remember that Sharpton disgraced himself thoroughly in the Brawley affair, fleeing the room when the judge read out the verdict. But it's only one of Sharpton's crimes. (E. g. siphoning off money from a kids fund). As an activist and minister (!) he sees himself as being above the law. Someone said "if Al Sharpton didn't exist we would have to invent him."

Mooresville faces a 1K-gallon sewage spill due to root intrusion
Mooresville in North Carolina recently experienced a sewage spill that has affected the local environment. According to reports, around 1,000 gallons of sewage were spilled due to tree roots that entered the gravity sewer line near 154 Lantern Acres Drive. The spill occurred in an area that leads to the West Branch Rocky River Creek, which is a source of freshwater for the surrounding communities. Although the spill did not pose an immediate threat to human health, water resource officials have expressed concern about the long-term effects of the incident. It is important to note that the sewage spill was not of a magnitude that would cause immediate danger, but it is still a significant environmental hazard that needs to be addressed.

Fav Gym Leader from each region and why
ooh! i havent been to many regions, so this is mostly based off of general vibes + what ive heard about them from my parents
for unova we have a tie for both my parents, clay and elesa of course! i love them both very much, and so much of my pokémon knowledge can be attributed to them. skyla is also super nice!
in paldea, i really like iono, but i dont think thats an unpopular opinion. i watch her streams sometimes when im feeling down, and her super cute and funny personality always makes me feel better! katie also seems lovely, and ive seen pictures of some of brassius’s art - id like to meet both of them!
kanto - misty seems very cool, but i also would love to have a battle with sabrina. ive heard that she has an interesting psychic link with her pokemon, and i want to see how that works.
in johto, id love to meet whitney! she’s very cute and although she uses normal types, she has quite a few fairy types on her team (though ive heard rumors shes a sore loser)
for hoenn, brawley and flannery both seem like really nice and fun people! id love a battle with either of them.
in sinnoh, candice is absolutely adorable, and id love to get to know her! she seems like such a fun person to be around.
in kalos, valerie is the obvious pick, as a fellow fairy specialist, and i think that her fashion is all super interesting (also, her sylveon is so cute!). however, her eyes creep me out just a little…
for galar, id love to meet that new fairy gym leader, bede. he seems around the same age as me, and itd be cool to meet another fairy specialist thats around my age. oddly enough, i feel like theres barely any fairy specialists out there. i know it was the last of the sixteen types to become official by the league, but its still odd.
i think thats all the regions with gym leaders!

Cucalorus Internship [June 30th]
Arianne Tong
During this week, I continued to watch, judge, and flag short films for the festival. I finished my first batch of 40 films and move on to my next batch next week. Morgan and I also unpacked a lot of funky mirrors for a art project that they are working on. Lastly, my festival pass design was chosen for the Lumbee Festival which is from July 6-8! I had to edit and add sponsors to my design and I can't wait to see it used at the festival next weekend!!
Also included a picture of Dan Brawley's, the executive director's, dog named Izzie! She's always in the office and is such a sweetheart :)
