The Best News of Last Week - March 6, 2023
🐎 - News That'll Make You Say "Neigh" to Negativity: My Weekly Positive Roundup
1. Drugmaker Eli Lilly caps the cost of insulin at $35 a month, bringing relief for millions
Tumblr media
Eli Lilly will cap the out-of-pocket cost of its insulin at $35 a month, the drugmaker said Wednesday. The move could prompt other insulin makers in the U.S. to follow suit.
The change, which Eli Lilly said takes effect immediately, puts the drugmaker in line with a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act, which in January imposed a $35 monthly cap on the out-of-pocket cost of insulin for seniors enrolled in Medicare.
2. Over 7,500 Pot Convictions Expunged in Missouri
Tumblr media
More than 7,500 individuals in Missouri have had their prior marijuana-related convictions expunged with recreational cannabis now legal in the state.
The expungement is the latest byproduct of the constitutional amendment that was approved by Missouri voters last fall, which legalized pot for adults and cleared the way for Missourians to have their records cleared.
3. Scientists cure 22 year old former race horse's behavioral disorders after 15 years of symptoms
Tumblr media
A team of international researchers from Italy and Brazil published findings earlier this month in the science publication Veterinary and Animal Science in which they reported a “successful outcome of four weeks-therapy with CBD” in a clinical case involving a 22-year-old Quarter horse that was experiencing behavioral disorders.
The clinical case study was a collaboration between investigators from the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Bologna in Italy and the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University Metodista of São Paulo in Brazil. At the heart of the study was a 22-year-old mare subject that was reportedly suffering from “chronic crib-biting and wind-sucking,” which are common behavioral disorders in horses for various reasons, including but not limited to poor welfare
4. Clean energy record: More than 40% of US electricity now comes from carbon-free sources
Tumblr media
Power from zero-carbon sources made up a full 41% of the U.S. electricity mix in 2022, a record-breaking number that has increased almost every year since 1990.
That mix includes power from nuclear plants, hydroelectric dams, solar and wind. With nuclear and hydropower relatively unchanged for years at about 19% and 10% respectively, the majority of the increase has come from the rapid build-out of solar and wind power, whose costs have plummeted in the past two decades.
5. ‘Cruelty-free’ circus replaced animals with holograms
youtube
Holograms of horses run in circles. The Circus Roncalli stopped using wild animals in its shows in the 1990s. Circus Roncalli was among the first circus acts in Europe to stop using animals in acts.
6. New UN brokered High Seas Treaty Places 30% of Ocean into protected areas by 2030 after decades of talks
Tumblr media
The High Seas Treaty places 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, aiming to safeguard and recuperate marine nature.
The agreement was reached on Saturday evening, after 38 hours of talks, at UN headquarters in New York. The negotiations had been held up for years over disagreements on funding and fishing rights.

LOUIS TOMLINSON SHOWS THAT NOTHING HAS CHANGED AMONG FANS AND CLOSES BRAZILIAN TOUR IN CURITIBA
Tumblr media
“Even when the night changes, it won’t change you and me.” With this verse from “Night Changes”, by One Direction, Louis Tomlinson shows that nothing has changed among Brazilian fans, who sang the singer's songs and two hits from his original group loud and clear at the Ligga Arena, in Curitiba, on the evening of Sunday, May 12th.
The presentation closed the “Faith in the Future” tour in Brazil, which began in Rio de Janeiro, on the 8th, and passed through São Paulo, on the 11th. The opening show was performed by the German band Giant Rooks, and soon Furthermore, at 8:05 pm, a total blackout started Louis' performance. Already in the first verses of “The Greatest” the fans’ love for the Brit was clear, as they sang along to all the songs in the show, focusing mainly on the artist’s solo songs.
Tumblr media
After achieving resounding success with the group One Direction, Louis embarked on a solo career after the group's hiatus in 2016. The first album came in 2020, “Walls”, followed by “Faith in the Future”, in 2022. That's the job which he always wanted to do, without worrying about commercial success – and this becomes clear during the show. His personality on stage is calmer, more restrained, with few interactions – or, we could say, interactions in his own way. Instead of long conversations between songs, he walks through the setlist song after song – the first talk to the audience came only after three songs. But clearly, he was always very grateful. “I wouldn't be able to do these incredible shows if it weren't for the support of incredible people like you, so thank you very much,” said the artist.
He also took the opportunity to thank everyone for their support in Rio Grande do Sul – the singer's shows in Brazil were a collection point for donations. Only then did he follow up with “Face the Music”, which the audience followed in chorus. In the middle of the songs, Louis seemed to pay close attention to the fans, pointing, waving. But he left much more for the music to do the talking.
It didn't take long for One Direction's first hit to hit the scene – “Night Changes”, in a different version, in the style of Louis. But he soon returned to the solo album with “Chicago,” followed by a cover of Post Malone’s “Chemical.” He intersperses more melodic and calm songs with intense hits like “Written All Over Your Face”, which sets an energizing tone throughout the show.
For the “encore”, he came with three songs – “Saturdays”, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” – the second and last One Direction song that is part of the setlist – followed by “Silver Tongues”, which closes with a key of gold the presentation. He even took the opportunity to get off the stage and get close to the audience – and interacted with a fan who carried a sign indicating that she was “blind, but her voice changed my life”. He hugged her and stood close so the fan could feel the artist.
Louis Tomlinson, 32 years old, appears mature and authentic – ready to spend many more years in his solo career alongside his longtime fans. Until next time, Louis!

Brazil's Lula Doesn't Want to 'Please Anyone' Over Ukraine Stance
Tumblr media
Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he does not want to "please anyone" with his views about Russia's invasion of Ukraine after he provoked criticism in the West for suggesting Kyiv was in part to blame for the war.
Speaking in Lisbon on Saturday at the start of his first visit to Europe since being elected president, Lula said his aim was to "build a way to bring both of them (Russia and Ukraine) to the table."
"I want to find a third alternative (to solve the conflict), which is the construction of peace," he told a news conference.
Lula has been criticised in the West for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began when Moscow invaded its neighbour in February 2022.

Russia threatened to shoot down French AWACS over the Black Sea
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/23/2024 - 00:08in Military, War Zones
Russian forces threatened to shoot down a French surveillance plane that patrolled international airspace over the Black Sea, a sign of Moscow's increasingly aggressive behavior as the invasion of Ukraine struggles to move forward, French defense officials said on Thursday.
“A Russian air traffic control system threatened to shoot down French aircraft in the Black Sea when we were in a free international zone where we patrolled,” French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu told RTL radio.
A French military spokesman, Colonel Pierre Gaudillière, said Lecornu was referring to an incident in mid-November that involved one of the four gigantic E-3F of France's Airborne Alert and Control Systems, or AWACS, surveillance aircraft flying over international waters in the Black Sea. Gaudillière described the incident as unprecedented for the French pilots in that region.
Tumblr media
“Through a radio exchange, the pilots were threatened by the Russians,” Gaudillière said.
“It was a particularly aggressive radio exchange,” he added. "It's the first time."
Two other authorities said that the conversation was in English and that Russian air traffic control said that their forces would "destroy" the French aircraft. The authorities spoke on condition of anonymity for discussing the confidential details.
In his radio interview, Lecornu said that Russia is returning to a "particularly aggressive" posture that recalls the behavior of the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Tumblr media
“Russia's behavior in 2024 is not related to what we saw in 2022 and, obviously, before the aggression in Ukraine,” the minister said. "This is explained by the fact that Russia is in difficulty on the battlefield in Ukraine."
French air force pilots regularly patrol NATO's eastern flank, part of the efforts of the military alliance of 31 nations to strengthen their defenses since Russia launched the large-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago on Saturday.
On board a French air force AWACS flight to the Black Sea coast in January, one of the pilots told the Associated Press that they seek to calm any tensions if they are intercepted by Russian planes, which he said was rare.
“Our orders must be, say, passive,” said the pilot, Major Romain. "For a civilian, let's say 'educated'".
Tumblr media
Flying well above the Black Sea coast, the French AWACS use their powerful radar and other surveillance equipment to spy on the Crimean Peninsula, which was taken from Ukraine by Russia and annexed in 2014. Flights can detect missile launches, aerial bombardments and other military activity in the Ukraine war.
Russian pilots have sometimes made it clear that they do not like to be observed.
In 2022, a Russian fighter launched a missile near a British Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft that was flying in international airspace over the Black Sea, the British government said. The United States government released a video in March 2023 of a Russian jet fighter dumping fuel into a U.S. Air Force surveillance drone. The drone crashed into the Black Sea.

April 8 (UPI) -- Elon Musk called for a judge on Brazil's Supreme to quit or be impeached after Justice Alexandre de Moraes launched an inquiry into his X social media platform in an escalating row over misinformation dating back to the Jan. 8 riots in Brasilia in 2023.
In a post on X on Sunday, Musk, the owner and chief technology officer of the company, said court decisions forcing X to "block certain popular accounts in Brazil" along with a gagging order preventing X from talking about the action were unconstitutional and that the company would no longer comply.
"Coming shortly, X will publish everything demanded by de Moraes and how those requests violate Brazilian law. This judge has brazenly and repeatedly betrayed the constitution and people of Brazil. He should resign or be impeached," Musk wrote.
"These are the most draconian demands of any country on Earth!"
But in a response to a late Saturday night post by Musk threatening to unblock the accounts, Moraes announced Sunday he was adding Musk to his ongoing investigation of "digital militias" and the opening of a fresh inquiry into Musk to "prevent the eventual practice of obstruction of justice, a criminal organization and incitement to crime."
Accusing Musk of mounting a disinformation campaign against the Supreme Court, he imposed daily fines $19,775 for each profile reactivated by the platform.
X's Global Government Affairs team said in a post that many of the details supporting the action had been obscured.
"We do not know the reasons these blocking orders have been issued. We do not know which posts are alleged to violate the law. We are prohibited from saying which court or judge issued the order, or on what grounds. We are prohibited from saying which accounts are impacted. We are threatened with daily fines if we fail to comply," it wrote.
"We believe that such orders are not in accordance with the Marco Civil da Internet or the Brazilian Federal Constitution, and we will challenge the orders legally where possible."
The accounts in question are thought to be connected to posts on X by far-right activists and figures that may have helped fuel the January 2023 storming of Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace by thousands of rioters supporting former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Moraes is also investigating Bolsonaro and his supporters for their alleged involvement in an abortive coup to overthrow the result of the October 2022 presidential election that brought President Lula da Silva to office.

Rafael Silva From 9-1-1: Lone Star Found His Way As a Queer Immigrant
ALEX GONZALEZ | SEPTEMBER 22, 2022
The Austin-set 9-1-1: Lone Star is actually filmed in Los Angeles, but actor Rafael Silva will make his way to Texas this month. Silva, who plays officer Carlos Reyes on the FOX procedural drama hit, is set to speak at the annual Black Tie Dinner fundraiser benefitting the LGBTQ+ community. This year, the ticketed event will take place at the Sheraton Dallas, and Silva is set to receive the organization's Vanguard Award.
We chatted with Silva via Zoom on one of his few days off from filming the upcoming fourth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star.
Though he will be in Dallas only briefly, Silva is looking forward to meeting LGBTQ+ people from all walks of life at the Black Tie Dinner, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 24.
“It’s such a privilege because you get to meet people who have gone through so many experiences,” he says. “I think learning from each other is the number-one task.” Silva was born and raised in Brazil and moved to the U.S. at the age of 13. He recalls having his first inklings of queerness at the age of 4 as a child in Brazil, but by the time he arrived in the U.S., he and his family were mostly focused on adapting to a new culture, a process he describes as "chaotic."
It was through participating in the arts that Silva was able to understand what being queer meant. “I come from a country where machismo equates to strength, and equates to a feeling of superiority over others,” Silva says. “And being part of the LGBTQIA+ community is considered everything but that. Navigating how I was brought up, to moving here, to then receiving another identity as an immigrant and Latino was very confusing. But I found my way, thankfully.”
While his coming out experience was positive, Silva believes that media still has a long way to go in terms of telling LGBTQ+ stories, Latinx stories and how those stories intersect. Off the top of his head, Silva notes that 25 years from now, it is predicted that the Latin population will exceed 100 million in the U.S. But, he points out, only 3% of television shows have Latinx leads, thus making for an inaccurate reflection of the number of Latin people in America.
“How does 30% of the consumers make up only 3% of film and television?” Silva says. “I think culturally and socially, Latinx and queer people are forgotten. It's as if you plant a tree and you expect it to grow, and it creates the very first fruits, and then you take all of the fruits, but then you keep expecting more, but you don't keep watering or nurturing the tree. How does that even work?” In the years he’s been playing Carlos, he is proud to be a source of representation for queer Latinx people. He says he receives messages from fans in real life and on social media about what Carlos has meant to them, and having that kind of impact, he says, is truly rewarding. Silva describes his character as someone who “tries to do the best he can,” but teases that he’s going to “trip pretty hard” at the beginning of the fourth season, which premieres in January 2023.
The third season of 9-1-1: Lone Star ended with Carlos getting engaged to his longtime boyfriend, TK Strand (Ronen Rubenstein). Fans of the show have nicknamed the couple “Tarlos” and often use the hashtag #Tarlos on Instagram and Twitter to share theories and fan fiction. Silva admits he does read the posts from time to time, although he doesn’t want to get too invested. He says he prefers to maintain “a healthy relationship with social media.”
“I think the healthiest way to maintain it is to maybe read one or two posts,” Silva says, “but not diving too deeply into it.”
Silva can’t share too much about the upcoming season of 9-1-1: Lone Star, but he teases a “big surprise for Carlos” in the season premiere. “It might piss off some people, it might not,” Silva says. “But I think it determines the tone as to how Carlos approaches the rest of the season.”
Over the years, the Black Tie Foundation has raised over $27 million for LGBTQ+ causes. Silva is honored to attend their annual dinner, and he regards the event as an example of the change he wishes to see in the world. His hope for the future is that he and everyone else continue to put good into the universe. “It’s not just about queer rights. It’s not just about climate change,” Silva says. “It’s about all of us. For me, I'm on that wagon personally of just trying to get everybody to stop the bullshit. And just if we need to hold hands and sing ‘Kumbaya,’ then so be it, if that's what gets the job done, for all of us to stop this nonsensical behavior pattern of just trying to be better than each other. The solution to stagnation is diversity.”

“Even when the night changes, it won’t change you and me.” With this verse of “Night Changes” by One Direction, Louis Tomlinson shows that nothing has changed among Brazilian fans, who sang the singer’s songs and two hits of his group of origin in loud and good sound at Ligga Arena in Curitiba, on Sunday night, May 12.

For the “bis”, he came with three songs – “Save Saturdays”, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” – the second and last song of One Direction that is part of the setlist – followed by “Silver Tongues”, which closes with a golden key the presentation. He even took the opportunity to get off the stage and go close to the audience – and interacted with a fan who took a sign indicating that she was “blind, but her voice changed my life”. He hugged her and stayed close so that the fan could feel the artist.
Louis Tomlinson, 32, shows himself mature and authentic – ready to pack many other years in his solo career alongside longtime fans. See you next next, Louis!

Can I get a breakdown on those elkann tweets, I'm completely out of the loop
OK so this is my semi in depth breakdown of the whole thing.
The first thing to start with is Lapo himself. He is the brother of John Elkann who is the chairman of Ferrari. Essentially the top guy in charge. Lapo himself doesn't have a position in Ferrari but he and his family own about 22% of the shares of Ferrari which after the public is the second highest amount. So he is a shareholder of Ferrari but he also is the black sheep of the family and has a history of drug abuse and other stuff.
And people like to use his history with those things to pretend that he is completely untrustworthy. Whether he is or not he does know about things that are happening in Ferrari and out of him and John he is the one that really cares about Ferrari the F1 team.
So Lapo woke up yesterday and chose violence. this was the first tweet:
Tumblr media
Talking about politics and highlighting the sponsors on the cars next to him.
And then this happened:
Tumblr media
He decided that subtilty would not be in his vocabulary on that Saturday and put Santander on blast essentially.
And whether you want to believe the theories it is at least a total PR nightmare. Because on one hand he is shitting on a big sponsor but he is also in a way confirming the 2008 conspiracies and the 2022 ones too. Or at least one of them.
Here is someone elses write up if you want a second opinion feat some more tweets that Lapo replied to.
Kimi vs Alonso & Santander
About 2008 there is a nice write up with actual quotes and more context here but this is my summary.
Kimi won the 2007 wdc and started 2008 really well winning two out of the first 4 races and having a good points lead and then things got weird.
Suddenly there were rumours that Santander wanted to join Ferrari and they wanted Alonso to drive for the team. Santander also were expanding into Brazil at that time (or something like that) and therefore wanted to keep Massa. And that's where the theory comes in:
The idea is that they wanted to get rid of Kimi whose contract was up at the end of the season (it ended up being extended because Kimi had an option but it was cut short by one year anyway). Problem is the dude just won the wdc and was at that point with his points lead on the way to winning a second one. And ousting a 2x wdc who just won and doesn't want to leave looks bad. So he was made to look bad.
Whether that's exactly how it went down or not I do not know but thing were strange as fuck.
They changed his front suspension and therefore the characteristics of the car without telling him. He straight up didn't know why his car was suddenly shit for a while and then when they did change it back suddenly he was fast again.
Monaco the race was strange.
Dude won the 4th GP and suddenly there are questions about his motivation that last the entire season and only become worse.
And Alonso seemingly knows things about Kimis contract he shouldn't be able to know.
Kimi himself never outright said anything but if you read his quotes from that time and when he is leaving Ferrari it does sound like something strange is going on.
And now for the 2022 season Santander is back with Ferrari.
And the timeline is stupidly similar. Like it is a little bit weird.
Charles starts the season super well, big points lead after the first 5 races and then things go to shits.
There is the whole car development thing, the sometimes insanely strange strategy especially Silverstone. And around Silverstone there were quite a few rumours that they wanted to make sure that Carlos wins a race. There are strange media narratives and so on. The early new contract after a bad start etc.
The whole "winners win" comment by Santander also ties into that including the IG like that Carlos dropped on the dumb post that were both super disrespectful to Charles who actually facilitated the win with his defense. A defense that Helmut Marko of all people praised publicly multiple times yet Ferrari said nothing about.
It's not that you can't explain some of these things with simple stupidity but it is an insane amount of stupidity that only happens to one driver which is where it starts looking a bit weird.
And now we're questioning Charles motivation.
Tumblr media
Nobody knows what's really going on. But it doesn't look unlikely that there is at least some politicking happening with Santander that's not necessarily helpful for the entire team.
And before someone comes at me, this has nothing to do with Alonso or Carlos the people. This is about Ferrari and sponsor politics.
