Today we are reflecting on the women who Prince lifted up in his career, and his legacy of supporting and empowering the women artists he admired in the music industry. As soon as he signed to Warner Bros. and established himself as a formidable force in the recording world, Prince was eager to begin nurturing new talent. In the late 1970s, he was working closely with a fellow teenager from North Minneapolis, Sue Ann Carwell, helping her to create the demos that would help her to land her own Warner Bros. contract. By the early 1980s, in addition to the Time, Prince was producing and writing full albums for his proteges Vanity 6 and Apollonia 6, and working more closely with Wendy and Lisa to create songs for the Revolution. Sheila E., who would continue collaborating with Prince throughout his career, was enlisted to join his Purple Rain Tour and become his first female musical director for the 1987 Sign O' The Times Tour, and behind the scenes, engineer Susan Rogers was responsible for capturing many of Prince's best-known songs of the 1980s. On his Paisley Park Records imprint, Prince enlisted artists like Jill Jones, Taja Sevelle, Mavis Staples, Ingrid Chavez, and Carmen Electra to record with him, working closely on many of those albums right here at Paisley Park. And when he launched NPG Records in the late '90s, he continued that tradition by collaborating with influential artists like Chaka Khan. The list goes on and on (literally too many to highlight them all): Rosie Gaines became a star of the early lineup of the NPG, appearing on hits like "Diamonds and Pearls" and the live rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" that appears on The Hits/The B-Sides, and Prince's first wife Mayte Garcia took center stage as a dancer for much of the 1990s. In the 2000s, Prince mentored and produced albums for Bria Valente, Andy Allo, and Judith Hill, recruited vocal powerhouses like Liv Warfield, Shelby J and Elisa Fiorillo, the latter whom he worked with earlier in her career, to join his NPG, formed the all-women 3RDEYEGIRL with Donna Grantis, Ida Nielsen and Hannah Welton.
