here is a list of some of my fave horror films (thank you to the multiple people who asked me about recs)!! the definition of horror is very subjective; it’s a very personal genre, and examining exactly what about the films you’re watching you find scary (and why) is key to understanding how a film works
although this list is not entirely comprehensive these are some of my faves (some of which people debate about whether they’re horror or thriller or sci-fi whatever); despite other generic readings, to me they are firmly rooted in horror technique and aesthetic and are ones that i recommend checking out!!

in remembrance of a great musician
I was saddened to learn of the death of Brian Henry Hooper, a fantastic bass player and someone who I was glad to have discovered as part of my love of Rowland S. Howard. Brian was 55 years old and had been battling lung cancer. Here are a few songs that have meant a lot to me over the years, in memory of Brian’s contribution to Australian rock music.
youtube
“Execution Day” (Spencer P. Jones, Rumour of Death, 1994; featuring Rowland S. Howard, Conway Savage and Peter Jones) - always loved how cool Brian looked in this music video.
youtube
“Exit Everything” (live; originally from Rowland S. Howard’s Teenage Snuff Film, 1999; song co-written with BHH) - the incredible bass line that could last forever.
youtube
“Sleep Alone” (Rowland S. Howard, Teenage Snuff Film, 1999; also co-written with BHH) - a stone-cold classic, another song I never want to end.
youtube
“The Golden Age of Bloodshed” (Rowland S. Howard, Pop Crimes, 2009) - yet another miniature masterpiece, a truly brilliant song in all regards. Really crystallizes a certain vision of modern life.
youtube
“Stronger” (from Brian Henry Hooper solo album Trouble, 2010) - straightforward, inspiring and puts a smile on my face. Brian, you’ll be missed.
