Today i finished bricks and did the skim coat. I wish i had pics of the in progress bricks but i only have a pic of the basement hole and then a pic of me sweaty in front of bricks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh i wait found a pic of the concept art without any mortar
Maybe i did like 50 bricks? The hardest part was the cinder blocks. The slop just falls right off when you turn them upright and as you see i had to do 10 cinder blocks and also double layer them. Also then having to slop on the mortar and shove the brick into the top of the stack. The mortar just came flying out so i really hope there is at least some mortar up there. And also the margin trowel is fiddley.
The sides of the window hole is all wonky so i had to slop in a lot of cream and use rocks as structure to hold up the slop. Alex did all the brick cutting and sparks and flying brick shrapnel really hurt.
Alex's dad, whose profession is building things, called my brickwork, and i quote, "spectacular"
By the end of all this, having only watched about 5 minutes of a scottish man explain bricklaying, my technique was rated as "expert" and like a true professional
I never want to do this again but it was a good learning experience and i gained a new skill

The Enslaved in Dumfries: Tense Months for the Man Named Neptune
By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
From 02/1787 – 04/1787, an enslaved man named Neptune appeared in a series of correspondence between John Lawson (1754-1823) and George Washington (1732-1799). While we have no records written by Neptune or interviews recorded, we can construct his voice and life for a short time in 1787.
GW indicated in a letter to Henry Lee, Jr. on 02/04/1787 that he wanted to purchase a bricklayer from (presumably) James Hunter, Jr., “from report a good work man & of tolerable character and his price does not exceed one hundred, or a few more pounds, I should be glad if you would buy him for me.” However, there was one caveat – GW did not want to purchase him if Hunter included the family in the sale due to potential hurt “feelings” of the enslaved or being “incumbered” by additional family members. Although unnamed in this letter, historians believe this to be the enslaved man Neptune, purchased by Lawson sometime in February or early March. GW apparently kept his eye on Neptune as by 03/17, Lawson wrote to GW that he was unable to forcibly send Neptune to Mount Vernon as arranged as he had “cut his leg so badly that he has not been able to walk since & I am affraid will not soon.” By 04/02, Lawson’s overseer approved Neptune’s ability to soon travel with Lawson writing to GW, “I have therefore directed him to send Neptune (who will deliver this) to Mount Vernon the moment he thinks him able to travel without injuring himself.” At this point, he also noted that GW could “keep him” as well. The overseer shortly determined Neptune could travel and GW wrote to Lawson that he was apparently pleased with Neptune, “Although he does not profess to be a workman, yet as he has some little knowledge of Bricklaying—seems willing to learn—and is with a man who understands the business, I will keep him…” According to GW in a postscript, Neptune became “a good deal disconcerted” when informed of this as GW noted a Mrs. Garrad (potentially the widow of William Garrad of Stafford county) enslaved Neptune’s wife and Neptune felt the distance was too great. GW acknowledged this but hoped he could “reconcile him to the seperation (seeing her now and then) in which case I will purchase him…” Neptune returned to Lawson by 04/18, and while Lawson reported that Neptune raised the “same objections”, Lawson purportedly assured Neptune he might have a better life with GW from GW “permitting him to visit his Wife at proper times” to having more “agreeable” labor. Lawson also informed Neptune “Indeed if I were to keep him I might probably be under a necessity of sending him much farther from his Wife than where he now is”, hoping this threat and the previous “assurances” would prove “useful” to GW. They did not. Between 04/18-04/25,  Lawson forced Neptune back to Mount Vernon and then Neptune returned to Lawson “to avoid being Sold at So great a distance from his Wife”, instead agreeing to be hired by GW for a period of a month to a year.
Tumblr media
(Cut Common Nail Fragments, 1805-2000, Building materials excavated in the Town of Dumfries, identified as the Waters Barn; Artifacts donated by Cleveland Anderson)
Separation of enslaved families was common as white patriarchs based their decisions on financial and economic interests. From the correspondence above, we know slaveowners had already separated Neptune from his wife, with him in Prince William County and her possibly in Stafford County. The fear of separation, whether from a spouse or child, was a constant horrific threat for the enslaved population. While Washington expressed reluctance in separating the family, him and Lawson constantly applied pressure to Neptune to the point where GW hired Neptune for possible months to a year. Hiring the enslaved was also a common practice, enslavers benefitting from the enslaved person’s viability and experience. After agreeing upon a price and presumed length, officials expected employers to provide clothing, food, housing, along with maintaining the health of the enslaved person. While GW hired Neptune directly from Lawson, hiring agents and brokerage firms became more popular as the hiring market increased substantially between 1750-1825. By 1801, Virginia amended a law to prohibit enslaved persons from hiring themselves out to both eliminate competition and further restrict and control the black population, but officials did not regularly enforce it.
While the correspondence is between two white men arranging the life of Neptune and his family based on patriarchial economic interests and desires, we can still hear Neptune’s voice. He was not silent when he learned GW intended to purchase him nor when he left Mount Vernon expressing his desire and need to be close to his wife. Although these letters are short and focused on bricklaying, they preserved Neptune’s voice and resistance hidden between the lines.
