AA THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION!! Okay im likely gonna go back and edit this later once i think of Better Words, but prepare for a Long Ass Leon Analysis Post

I think that while a similar effect could have happened had it been another Hashira, the fact that it was Rengoku affected not just Tanjiro, but the rest of the Corps in a massive ripple effect. I’m assuming that by asking this you’ve read my “why Rengoku’s death impacts the outcome of the series” analysis post, but regardless, im gonna start rambling now lol

Let’s turn it into a cause-and-effect formula. If [Hashira] dies after the Mugen Train Incident, it affects Tanjiro with [x] and the rest of the Corps with [y]. When Rengoku died, it devastated Tanjiro because of both his personal connection to Rengoku (Flame Breathing vs Sun Breathing, as well as Rengoku’s infectious brotherly attitude) and his respect for the Hashira as a whole. X is Tanjiro’s devastation and his exposure to the Actual Strongest Demons. Y, on the other hand, is much more powerful, because of Rengoku specifically. He was like an older brother to Mitsuri. He was an icon of strength and persistence for Tengen. He was a beacon of encouragement for everyone he encountered, and Rengoku was uniquely inspiring in that way. Rengoku, specifically. The latest link in the Flame Hashira chain, the Rengoku family legacy, he was really more legend than man. He was an unfalteringly blazing beacon of constant courage and flaming strength, and his loss hit especially hard, because of how unstoppable he always strove to be. Even the surlier Hashira like Sanemi and Obanai respected him, because he’s just that bright. He’s open, and approachable, and kind. He may be a legend, but he’s a human, living legend. He was friends with everyone, and impacted everyone’s lives just by being in them. The unceremonious and sudden nature of his death is what causes X to hit so hard for Tanjiro, and what causes Y to extend far beyond him.

If, for example, Sanemi was the one who dies at Mugen Train, things would’ve turned out much differently. Sanemi never accepted Nezuko, and probably would’ve died scorning her. This would cause X to be much less impactful for Tanjiro. He would still be devastated, because he’s Tanjiro, and because he holds a deep respect for all the Hashira, but Sanemi’s refusal to acknowledge Nezuko would significantly dampen the impact of his death. X would still hit hard, because Tanjiro is exposed to an immensely powerful warrior being unceremoniously taken out by a demon like Akaza, but Sanemi’s generally unapproachable nature as well as the fact that he stabbed Nezuko would significantly dampen the impact on Tanjiro. Additionally, Tanjiro doesn’t know Genya yet, so he wouldn’t have any personal motivation for sympathy. In the case of Rengoku, when he mentions Senjuro, that hits hard for Tanjiro, because they’re both eldest brothers. As for the rest of the Corps, they’d be devastated for the same reasons as Tanjiro- a Hashira has fallen, and that’s a rare and devastating casualty of war. But Sanemi doesn’t have the same social impact that Rengoku does, so ultimately I think neither X or Y would hit as hard.

Honestly im trying to stop myself from plugging every Hashira into this equation just for the sake of analysis, so I might come back to this later when I’ve gotten a bit more sleep lmao

Now let’s take a Hashira that Tanjiro has a personal connection to, like Shinobu or Giyuu. If Shinobu had come with Tanjiro to personally investigate Mugen Train, he would almost certainly blame himself for her death, and X would be a different flavor of powerful, because of her conversation with him in about Kanae’s dream. The death of any Hashira would cause Y to have some ripple effect, purely because it’s a Hashira, but ultimately, the only Hashira I believe could even start to rival Kyojuro’s influence is Gyomei, purely because he’s been a Hashira for so long. But no other Slayer had the same warmth and personable character that Kyojuro had, and that’s why his death in particular hits so hard. If Giyuu had died, Tanjiro would likely have been just as upset as he was with Rengoku- he’s witnessed Giyuu’s strength on multiple occasions, and Giyuu has staked his life on Nezuko. That’s something that Tanjiro won’t easily forget, and if Giyuu had died, it would easily devastate him to push himself harder, giving X the same emotional weight as Kyojuro’s death. However, because it’s Giyuu, Y would be MUCH less impactful, because a lot of the Hashira actively dislike him. ( @princeblue actually has an excellent analysis post on why he pisses the other Hashira off, I would recommend reading it, they make some excellent points!!)

Anyway, to restate my thesis, Rengoku’s death was as impactful as it was not just because he was a Hashira, but because he was Rengoku. He’s an infallible beacon of hope and warmth, and his unceremonious death sent a ripple effect through the entire Corps. He touches the lives of everyone he meets, intentionally or not- it’s just who he is. Much like Tanjiro, his passion is infectious, and his spark and drive spread to everyone who loved him after his death. It would still devastate Tanjiro to no end to watch a Hashira die in front of him, but it was Rengoku’s personal connection to not just Tanjiro, but the entire Corps that ultimately made him as impactful of a character as he was.

That last paragraph was a little shaky, I have a nasty habit of only doing analysis writing when it’s 4:30am and I should be sleeping, please ask me to clarify anything if I fucked up! I promise it makes so much sense in my head lmao

Although if writers want to select interpretations or source material wherein Anakin would have a complex, possessive, is-he-my-father-or-my-daddy relationship I'm not opposed (I have a post somewhere on the importance of defending deviancy, and how I could've easily been a self-hating anti if not for the exposure to various obikin voices, but as a mobile only tumblr it's unfindable lmao).

hi! do you mind sharing what steps you use to color your gifs? your colorings are always so nice

hi! since i've gotten quite a few people asking about this, i thought i'd do a full tutorial on it! 🥰 i'll go into two aspects—how i color gifs normally, for properly lit/neutrally colored scenes, and how i color when the scenes are unnaturally yellow/red/orange.

fair warning for a lot of images and me rambling way too much under the cut!

we'll start with how i color normally, i'll show you how to achieve something like this:

before we start, a couple of things to keep in mind:

i won't be going into the basics of gifmaking (screencaping, loading your frames in, sharpening, and all that). this is assuming you know the basics of giffing and have an idea of adjustment layers.

i use PS 2020, but you can do this in pretty much any version.

i always do all my editing with my gif converted into a smart object, but you can do this in frame animation too!

the way i'm coloring is quite specific to the way 911 is lit, and while this should work with any other show that has similar lighting, you can't use the same principles for shows that are washed out or have weird filters or really dark lighting.

so, i start off by brightening up my gif. i add an exposure and levels layer for this purpose:

this gives it sufficient brightness, but doesn't adjust it drastically the way some gifmakers like to do. the brightness usually isn't my focus, i'll adjust it if i need to, but i prefer to focus on color correction/enhancement, and so on. this is what my gif looks like now:

i like my gifs to have a LOT of contrast to reduce pixellation and because i think it gives it more clarity and crispness. i also like to them to be vibrant, but not in a way that makes the skin tones of the characters look unnatural. so i start off with adding a selective color layer with the blacks increased, for contrast (i know people usually use levels or curves, but i really prefer selective color in this instance) and a color balance layer to make the hue and tones of the gif cooler.

this is what i end up with:

of course, buck's skin looks way too unnatural. we'll fix this in selective color—i use a LOT of selective color layers just for the skin tone of the characters. i used at least 4 for this gif alone. the majority of your coloring process can take place there, if you're not going for anything fancy.

i'll share the settings i used, but keep in mind this is very subjective to each gif and scene. even if the scenes are very similar, you'll definitely have to make at least some adjustments.

i also added selective color to brighten majentas (for buck's lips and cheeks) and blues (for the background behind him). since there are only a handful of major colors in this scene, i didn't have to do much. but if there were green, yellow and other cooler colors, i would be working on making them look as vibrant as possible.

this was my result:

i decided i wanted my gif to look a little brighter, after all, and i used a brightness/contrast layer. i also decided to darken the reds a tad bit more, and highlight the whites, like so:

to complete it, i added a grey to white gradient map at about 22% opacity, set to soft light, to add a little more contrast. this step is optional, unless you're a stickler like me for the greys and blacks to be darkened lmao.

next, let's move on to color correcting!

there are a lot of layers you can use to color correct, and i'll be using channel mixer for the purposes of the tutorial. it's not too complicated—but in case you want a more detailed explanation into how it works, this tutorial is perfect!

so, this is the scene we'll be working with. 911 has good lighting compared to a lot of shows, but there are a lot of scenes—especially in s1 and in the characters' houses—that are washed way too yellow or red. the characters of color, unfortunately, seem to get the brunt of it. so i'll be showing you how to color correct, while staying true to their skin tones!

this is the gif without any coloring at all:

before brightening the gif, i'm gonna add a channel mixer layer. i'll go straight to the blue channel, and increase the red and green channels slightly.

this is what the gif looks like:

it looks better, but her skin is too majenta. we'll fix this with another channel mixer layer, this time in the red channel. reduce the red slider slightly, like so:

she looks better now! still a little too red, but our next steps will fix that. next, brighten up the gif and add contrast like normal:

of course, now she looks waay too pale. we'll fix this using vibrance:

better, but it's not close enough to her original skin tone for my liking. let's use selective color. i adjusted the reds:

i also adjusted the yellows, greens, cyans and blues; to make the other colors more vibrant. this is the finished gif:

if you want the gif to look brighter—i'm aware that the way i've done it gives it minimal brightness—you can add a brightness contrast layer, while upping both the brightness and contrast sliders. this should brighten up your gif, while keeping hen's skin tone as dark as it should be.

Ooohhh fun question!

Here's a rambly list ig sslkdjfdlkj (rereading it I’m realizing a lot of these are personality traits he learned from the assassins but I hope it answers your question-)

Well, like that last snippet said, I think the biggest thing is getting used to the idea that he's not expected to be perfect- or at least, good at- at everything he tries. And that he's not going to be rebuked or made fun of for not being perfect either. That also links in to trying hard to be the best at everything, he is the most competitive to the point where it makes things not fun anymore.

Along that line, he has a tendency to brag to a truly excessive amount.

Trust and privacy issues- the assassins in each class were fully encouraged to tattle on each other if they thought anything they were saying would go against the rules. Even just a little venting could get them in a lot of trouble, and so Mads has a hard time opening up if his feelings go against how he thinks he's 'supposed' to feel.

Like it was mentioned in this snippet, they weren't allowed to complain about being hurt, and 'complain' was misinterpreted quite a lot. So again he has a hard time admitting he's hurt if he thinks he shouldn't be. And actually!!! That's what helped him and Gandra get so close when they were little, they used to try and help each other out when they were injured and the mentors told them to 'walk it off' or something ridiculous. They used to stay up whispering jokes to each other as a way to distract one of them from the pain + sneaking bandages for them if they could. ...They were probably as young as 7 when this started.

Close relationships between the assassins were very much not encouraged and even smaller friendships were mostly used as strategy. That adds to the trust issues thing- people were only nice to you so they could try to use you.

In that same idea, that made romance strictly forbidden and something that most of the assassins weren't even aware of. Their only exposure to it would be seeing couples when they were out on missions, and even then they weren't allowed to ask questions about that. So! going from barely knowing romance was a thing to being in a relationship with NFenton was quite a huge change. Mads told him going into it that he was really trusting him a lot by doing this.

Going along with that is physical affection, I generally write Mads as disliking being touched unless it’s by someone he knows well, and then a flip switches and he’s the cuddliest hug-iest lean on-iest person ever (I think that goes for all of them except forrrrrr the Madhouse one, it just entirely dislikes being touched). Which, he was never able to get that close to someone before, so at first he finds figuring out just how much affection to give people a little tricky.

He doesn’t do well with people being angry, especially angry yelling. He gets really combative and defensive before running away to hide somewhere (because it really just scares him- with the assassins anytime anyone was angry at him it meant he was in trouble, and their mildest punishment was no food for the rest of the day-). Because of this I think his and NFenton’s first few fights- even over littler things- were really bad before they figured out this was a pattern that they needed to work on fixing (bright side to that too is they always make sure to have make-up snuggles).

He has a strong sense of justice and is also very empathetic, he never had his feelings listened to and he hated that so he’s going to listen to everyone else’s feelings and do what he can to help (this really comes out for the first time when he starts making friends with Blue). He also is very vengeful, he has allllll the means to stab someone if they’ve hurt him or his friends.

Getting used to like… free will! He can do whatever he wants without getting in trouble! Go places and eat things and do activities all without having to ask someone. slsldlf I’m picturing him just going up to NFenton looking like he’s had an epiphany and being like “I can just… go outside right now. Sit in the sun.” And NFenton not looking up and just replying “yes, that is something you can do.” Sldlflfl

Anyway, I think it all just comes back to feeling safe as the biggest change to get used to. He doesn’t have to be the best, he doesn’t have to watch every little thing he says, he’s going to have people to take care of him without judgement.

talk shop tuesday time (´꒳`)♡ i know gif coloring is an inconsistent process at the best of times but what's your go-to coloring process? what are aspects of your gifs that feel like they're your specific style?

forgot to answer this last week so i kept it for today <3 i think overall all of my gifs have at least one layer of curves, vibrance, color balance (midtones + shadows), and selective color (black) - for live action work, there's also usually a channel mixer layer for fixing some stuff (too blue/green). these are sort of the foundation for everything else, and as a group i often just double it up and then add stuff. brightness/contrast, exposure/gamma correction and the like

as for my specific style, i'm not 100% sure but maybe deep black? i can't seem to figure out how to do softer colorings lmao

May I ask how you edit cas screenshots and what apps you use?

Yes, of course!!

The only program I use is the free online photo editor "Photopea."

First I open my image and sharpen it (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen). Then I'll crop it to the size I want: for CAS screenshots that's usually 500 x 720, but it could change depending on what I feel looks best. (Note that your monitor size might change what looks good for you, so just find what you like best!) After that I always set the exposure to 0.40 (Image > Adjustments > Exposure... > Exposure: .40). Then I will change the contrast. The contrast number depends on the sim, but usually I do somewhere around 20 (Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast > Contrast: 20).

Finally I soften the image: I set surface blur settings both at 4 (Filter > Blur > Surface Blur > Radius 4 and Threshold 4) and then I do Gaussian Blur settings at .1 px (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur > Radius: .1 px). This final step is similar to adding "Topaz Clean" in Photoshop, and it just makes the image look really smooth and cohesive, in my opinion.

Also, I just want to note that I use this CAS lighting (Cas_L), have the game graphics set to the highest settings, and have edge smoothing and laptop mode turned off!

I know that seems like a lot of steps and words, but I promise it's intentionally very simple in practice! I'm not tech savvy at all and had no experience with digital editing prior to making my simblr, but this process came together after a lot of trial and error and cobbling together what much more experienced/talented simblrs were doing (lmao).

Sneak peak into her end look when I kick my ass into finishing the story, because she accepts the corruption willingly she fucking glows for it literally normally she's dull grey dull freckles dull tail but this willing corrupt state causes her to burn so bright tummy and freckles aglow with sparkles of synergy under her skin

Perfect Shadow, what happens when you take a traumatised xl May and slam her up into a cave ceiling and she gets synergy lodged in her lower back/beginning of tail? This. This happens. Cruel and self serving, her trauma has become somewhat twisted she still wants to be around other twos to have and protect but it's warped causing her to not be the healthiest about it ready to give them her corruption to join her join her so they can't fade and leave her. Her instincts and primal wants are running high, desiring companionship and ready to devour other pokemon for their flesh and life force

Poached, this one was mentioned briefly in a multiverse fic, this May was like canon May once but was captured in a darkball that broke apart her body while warping her stats to max level, the process of forcing her body to it's maximum potential and strength saw altered concentrated Mewtwo cells be placed into the gaps where her body was broken, essentially she had that bone breaking height surgery but it added chunks of new mewtwo segments to her body making her taller and like a normal mewtwo but warping her physically so she looks incredibly strange but is very powerful and it is best to not approach her while she's still in control of the darkball as she can't hear you.

Battle ring is a kind of joke au between me and @xhunterbeatsx where May gets captured and put in a battle ring hence the name but is given synergy iv supplements much like their Syn does to make her more powerful/improve her performance/actually activate her power. Because of the synergy exposure shes started to get a bit of Jekyll and Hyde syndrome with her hand that's starting to be affected by the synergy twitching and moving on its own, she has also gain a more deranged unhinged disposition due to constant beatings in fights and the fact her autonomy is essentially violated over and over as she's forcefully needled to be given the drugs even tho she had tried begging pleading crying for them not to, at this point she's given up trying to stop them and is a bit unhinged with newcomers and dirty lmao she's dusty as I imagine the battle area is like sand/dirt floor

Corrupt Battle is obviously what will eventually become of her, the synergy crystals accumulating under the scar tissue where she's been repeatedly jabbed her hand is still quite Hyde to her Jekyll and probably acts following the synergys command, she's probably a bit more broken now and would let the corruption take over her

And finally Amputee May an au of an alternative au ending that's not canon XD because I got attached. If you've not read the fic or seen the art May gets a huge crystal lodged in her leg and falls to corruption but is saved later by Syn and Darkness but in the meantime her leg below the crystal had become rotten from the wound and lack of blood ect and could've be saved so in the process of deshadowing her she lost her leg, her hues don't fully recover from her corruption either leaving her dull and her freckles ashy and she's understandably quite depressed here for it all, her scelara are slightly grey too to indicate that although she's cursed the corruption still claimed part of her soul

At first when I came across the art, I didn’t know that it was an ARG. Eventually when more and more answered asks of yours appeared on my page, I found out it was an ARG. I really loved the style and it just felt so...ominous. But ARGs weren’t really for me (I’ve never tried one out and was too lazy to lmao) so I just admired the art and laid back for a few weeks.

It wasn’t until today that I decided “Y’know what? I’m bored! Screw it!” And saved all of the frames in my phone to study. I turned up all of the settings of my phone like the exposure and brightness and sharpness etc.

After like a second of looking at this cool asf hidden text I was like “Yeah okay I need to record this!” So I pulled out the closest notebook I had and started writing down my thoughts and other stuff! Now I’m in love with this ARG—

I have a picture (I took one to show my friends my new obsession—) but I don’t think I’m allowed to post it since it’s all of my thoughts through combing through most details. Still though! Just know that your series has a whole entire page in a notebook dedicated to it because it’s just that good PFT—

I think my manifesting... somehow... worked? But in a different way than I'd ever expect.

A completely different friend impulsively asked to hang out after work, and we had no plans. They were very excited about their new car though, and mentioned that they hadn't even driven it on the highway (they literally got it Today). And then me being me, asked if they wanted to.

I don't wanna dox myself here, but there's a highway I live nearby that is my favourite drive in the world. It's absolutely stunning and it's been my dream for years to go on it with a friend once I'm old enough to drive (or they are eheheh). It's just... so freeing and idk, special.

And well, my friend said bet in response to me, and next thing we know we're cruising down the highway, with no destination quite yet, deciding to grab fast food for dinner and go.

rawl squadron is my squad of clone ocs!! i posted quite a bit about them when i was last on tumblr but they've undergone heavy revisions in the past month or so after not touching them for like a year sdkfjnskdfj right now i am reworking all of their physical designs so i dont have any new art but i hope to in the future!! and im also completely reworking their story right now!

rawl is in the 77th Attack Battalion or the "Serpent" Battalion (all of the squads are named after different serpent species!! and here's some info on what a rawl is) and is the personal squad of the battalion's jedi (think wolfpack for the 104th) previously they had a different jedi general, another oc of mine, but now cyrus is their jedi general!!

NOW here are some intros for them (this was so hard to condense LMAO):

Lt. Barun (CT-3527) - first in command of the squad. batchmates with shir. his name means rain in farsi. he has a mech-arm from the same explosion that almost killed poke on their first mission as a squad. he does not like that he was put in charge and does not want to be in charge. he hates rules and loves thinking on the fly and improvising. he's impatient and reckless and has boundless amounts of energy. he's incredibly charismatic and very good at motivating people. he gets promoted to commander later in the war. pronouns are he/him. name is pronounced like bah-rune.

Sgt. Viper (CT-4091) - second in command of the squad. is the only member of the squad that only has one tattoo (a tattoo of a rawl - all members have some version of a rawl tattooed on them). is very quiet and reserved. he has compulsive tendencies and is a very by the book person. he is tense around the squad and doesn't know how to loosen up or be vulnerable which leads to him often feeling ostracized. he is incredibly level headed and who everyone looks to in a crisis situation even though he is the second in command. he is the best sharpshooter in the squad. pronouns are he/him.

ARC Trooper Clint (CT-9330) - clint is an ARC trooper and to quote my notes "basically a cowboy but make it nonbinary and gay as hell" skdjfnskdjfn he has a buzzed, shaved head that he likes to dye bright colors occasionally. they have one cybernetic eye from a mission gone wrong. very laid back and they speak with a drawl. loud! opinionated! extroverted! and adopted nitro as his introverted friend. best described as the life of the party. joined rawl later in the war and often takes other missions since they are an ARC. pronouns are he/they.

Cpl. Nitro (CT-8119) - nitro is a munitions and demolitions expert. he has dark hair that is greying at his temples. he has hearing aides due to repeated, close exposure of loud explosions and noises that have damaged his ears. he's incredibly quick witted and smart but also very blunt. he often comes off as cold and harsh. he is very introverted and Clint is his very best friend in the whole wide world. pronouns are he/him. (nitro was also the first one of the squad that i created <3)

Cpl. Carrot (CT-7149) - carrot has orange air (dyed) and has lots and lots of piercings. he is a Big Boy and he uses a Big Gun. carrot is that weird art kid. he's a hopeless romantic. very smart about specific topics but has no common sense. he is an incredibly genuine and caring person. gets hit on the most out of the entire squad but doesn't know why (its bc he's hot AND genuine). he painted the design on rawl's transport ship and he paints all of the squad's armor. pronouns are he/him.

Cpl. Shir (CT-3279) - batchmate of barun. he has long hair that goes down to his waist, but he keeps it in a braid most of the time. his name means lion in farsi. he is the Mom of the squad and also a pilot. very aggressive with his love and very protective. would fight a Sith with his bare hands if they threatened anyone in his squad. he is a very angry boy and often get in trouble for mouthing off to superiors. a cynic, a nihilist, and person who is deeply hurting!! pronouns are he/him. name is pronounced like shear.

Cpl. Robin (CT-4409) - his hair began to grey early due to a genetic mutation. he has freckles and an x shaped scar on one of his temples from a training accident. he is the scout of the squad and has the best reflexes. he is the definition of a puppy in human form. happy! excitable! friendly! and incredibly devoted to his friends. he hides his insecurities behind a bright smile and a laugh. he is best friends with jasper. pronouns are he/him.

Pt. Jasper (CT-5036) - jasper has vitiligo, something that he is very insecure about but that he grows to hate less and accept more after joining rawl. he is the best in the squad at hand to hand combat and is the squad's strategist. he is incredibly anxious, nervous and is not confident in himself. he is incredibly INCREDIBLY intelligent (like a genius) and very literal. humor often goes over his head. best friends with robin. pronouns are he/him.

Pt. Poke (CT-9651) - poke is bald and his head and upper body is crisscrossed with heavy scarring because of an explosion he was caught in during the first official mission rawl had together. he made a joke right after it happened. he has a spine implant that runs down his back, another result of the explosion that almost killed him. he is the jokester. the definition of a clown and will be cracking jokes in the middle of a mission. he gets dumb tattoos and on the surface it fits his personality but really he got them so that people would laugh at his tattoos and not his scars (he's very insecure about them). he is the jack of all trades of the squad. the glue that holds them together <3 pronouns are he/him.

would you mind sharing advice on coloring gifs? yours are absolutely gorgeous

hey love! sorry for the wait, i've put a mini tutorial under 'read more' explaining how i made my coloring for this particular gif & some of the ways in which i use my go-to adjustment layers. i didn't have a chance to use every adjustment layer (like hue/saturation, which is a layer i use a lot!), but if you have any other questions that i didn't cover here, do let me know 🥰

start with curves - i personally find that adding the curves later on in the process will either undo some of the color editing you have already worked on or the changes you are going to end up with will be too drastic (so you run the risk of quality loss). because the curves layer makes such a big difference, finding the right black and white points and getting rid of weird tints/filters in the original footage in the very beginning will help you have a clean base to work with, where (hopefully) all the colors are clearly separated.

already a big difference! i found a white spot i liked somewhere on lighter window area, turned the layer opacity down to around 70% until it looked natural enough and this is the base i’m gonna work with. the colors are much better separated now & ps can isolate the reds, yellows and greens far more easily for me now when i add in the next steps (selective color with an emphasis on making the reds and yellows warmer + some vibrance):

if the style you are going for is bright and vibrant, this is where i would normally come in with some brightness+contrast and exposure. for this particular gif, i added a brightness layer where i did not edit the actual values, but instead did this to the layer itself:

then i added an exposure layer, where i increased the exposure by about 0.17, decreased the offset by about 0.0015 and brought the gamma correction to ~0.95. all of these steps brightened up the gif and added some definition:

this is just my own personal preference, but sometimes i like to add a gradient map just to emphasize some of the colors in the gif; in this case, i wanted the gif to feel warmer and lean more heavily into the warm yellow/green hues, so i’ve created a gradient map that looks like this:

this is 1) going to accentuate those warmer tones and 2) naturally bring in a bit more light into the footage. i bring the opacity down to ~20%, play around a bit more with the selective colors to get the shades of red/yellow/green i want & correct the blacks/neutrals if i need to.

then i come in with a final levels layer, where i create the final contrast - if i love starting with curves, i also almost always end with levels because i find that it gives me the perfect finishing touches. to me, that’s the stage where i am happy with the colors themselves, i juuust want to make them stand out a little more & make the gif feel a little more alive. here, i brought the arrow on the far right closer to a value of ~230 and the arrow on the far left to 4-5. this depends entirely on your footage and what you’ve done with the coloring up to this point. it’s very easy to over-brighten a gif at this stage and pay in quality loss (i’ve had my fair share lmao) or over-contrast it by making the darks too dark, if that makes sense. in the end, this is what i ended up with:
