When you said the only reason Curl was so successful at Wisconsin was because she was surrounded by elite talent you were right on the money. Fraud energy
Her counting stats were great, and she had a national team pedigree (which... I genuinely don't know why she's still on the national team besides comfort on USA Hockey's part), but having players like O'Brien, Simms, and Eden feeding you the puck (and Clark/Roque/Watts before that) makes it easier.
The flying elbow is a new development. She had one major penalty in her last year of college for kneeing, and generally hovered around 20-25 PIM over the course of a 40-game season, but I don't remember thinking, "Christ, can you stop being a thug?" I don't know how much of it is just misplaced aggression because of all the times she's been hit vs. poorly implementing a request from her coaches to be more physical, but it's altogether blockheaded.

watched the video britta curl posted on Instagram, and while I have many thoughts on it, I was completely distracted by seeing this in the comments:
Tumblr media
why is this comment hidden Instagram. a comment by a trans woman telling britta shes open to having a conversation with her while also saying she believes in curl and wont judge her.
and then u see all the other comments not hidden by Instagram saying how curl didnt need to apologize and that shes entitled to her opinions. some even outright decrying the "woke left" and "men in women's sports".
but ykno. This is the comment that needed to be hidden

pwhl minnesota drafting britta curl, jesus christ. it’s a huge, dissapointing, punch in the gut— not to just mn fans, but lgbtq+ people all throughout the league
the pwhl is supposed to be inclusive!! it no longer stands for that when you draft a bigot. quite the opposite of cultivating a better hockey culture i’m pretty sure. my heart goes out to all the girls that could have had that spot, and it goes out to all those who had this as a safe space
a half-assed message in the youtube chat isn’t enough, i seriously hope this gets fixed and she’s not signed.

How do players deal with being booed? Saw in the montreal game how curl was booed every time she touched the puck, aside from wether or not that’s cool of the crowd to do, how does that effect a player and their ability to play the game, in your opinion?
Short, boring answer: it varies.
A lot of high-level athletes develop selective hearing - not just for booing, but for any crowd noise. You have to filter out the chatter that doesn't matter. Shane Victorino was diagnosed with ADHD when he was five, and he went off his meds briefly when he started playing pro ball, but he realized he had to go back on them when he kept getting distracted by fan conversations behind him. On the hockey side, former Duluth head coach Maura Crowell used to pump Rainforest Cafe noises into practice before the Bulldogs played the Badgers, because Badgers fans are nuts and they needed to get used to how loud LaBahn gets.
There's also a concept that comes from wrestling called "playing the heel." The job of the heel is to generate heat, get the crowd riled up... against you. Brad Marchand and Tom Wilson are two players who have gone out of their way to play the heel. When Scott Rolen got traded from the Phillies to the Cardinals and called St. Louis "baseball paradise," he knew he was subjecting himself to a lifetime of bad reactions in Philly, but that's why he did it. These are players who would be offended if they didn't get jeers in enemy territory.
I think that, if you know a fan population doesn't like you, it's better psychologically to go and play the heel. This is something done tremendously poorly both by Curl and by Cutter Gauthier. It's more egregious in Gauthier's case because he has made Rolen-esque comments about the Flyers versus the Ducks, but he won't commit to just being the Bad Guy. You can't have it both ways.

Britta Curl the Bad Gurl?
Hey yall!! You all came to my aid before, and now that I’m deep in the trenches I need to know the deal with Britta Curl.
What did she say or do? Is it the lack of response to her very public homophobic reputation?
Cuz I’m all for the hate but if it’s just a rumor idk if I can get behind it myself. But TBH every time someone hits her (especially Poulin) I’m filled with joy, so there’s gotta be something to it. Right?!
I see she’s on the US IIHF team and actually playing which is disappointing, but Ms Hilary Knight in all her glory makes up for it.

there's this phenomenon i've seen talked about where a product is finally being created for a market that wasn't previously being served, and the first response to it being an expectation of moral perfection, especially when the market in question is marginalized in some way (as women are in general, but especially in the world of sports). the product is held to a higher standard than the counterpart that serves the non-marginalized because people are projecting a sense of morality onto the product that they don't with the counterpart because the counterpart is (wrongfully) seen as neutral or apolitical because it represents the non-marginalized.
i'm not by any means saying everyone should shut up and take what they can get, but the threats of specifically boycotting over things that wouldn't result in any comparable amount of pushback if they happened in the nhl (which can actually afford to withstand a boycott and where changes made by a boycott would have a much bigger impact) is worth examining to me. also i don’t know how productive it is toward making the world a better and more inclusive place. is an approach to punishing one single individual having a net positive benefit when the approach could also harm women's sports at large. sometimes it feels like people just want to have a strong reaction in the moment because it makes them feel like a good person

Welp, it’s true… time for me to find another team to support bc I’m so tired of Frost’s inability to actually give a shit about their lgbtq fans and players

Thank you for continuing to point out Britta Curl is a transphobe. I'm trans, and it's really frustrating to see so many people shrug their shoulders and say it sucks but oh well. If she gets drafted to my team, it's not oh well to me. No way would I want to watch the players I've gotten attached to this season be buddy buddy with her or watch my team throw her all over their socials. I'm sure some of them think the same way, but at least they're not shouting it loud for everyone to hear.
I just wanted to say I appreciate it.
Thanks, anon. 💜 I know some people are probably tired of hearing about it. But too bad.
Cuz if (when) she's drafted? I'm tired of yet another thing I'm deeply invested in saying my existence is more negotiable than everyone else's. That contributing to the deaths of people (MANY OF THEM CHILDREN) like me by making the world inhospitable to us isn't a dealbreaker.
I'm tired here's yet another thing that has taken the stance of we say inclusion but we don't really mean it for you.
Because I hear you. I'm also trans. And yeah, I don't think a lot of people grok that it isn't just "oh that's annoying and frustrating." It's one more instance of how acceptable it is to be outright hostile to trans people.
I don't doubt there are others in the league who agree with her. But they're wise enough to keep their damn stupid mouths shut and that does matter, because it is less open hostility.
I said in the PWHL community that I'm not excited for tonight, mostly anxious. This is a huge reason why. I'm sitting here just feeling sick that a thing I care about with neuroatypical fervor, a thing I have spent a lot of time and money on this year, is likely going to slap me in the face and remind me of my place in the world as a second class person.
May we luck out and be surprised tonight, friend. Stay safe. 💜🏳️‍⚧️
