Town of Union LED Streetlight Upgrades Nearly Complete

The Town of Union in the Southern Tier in Broome County is about to reap the full benefits of our Smart Street Lighting NY Program. A NYPA-financed, $4 million LED streetlight upgrade is expected to be completed next month.  

The replacement of approximately 7,100 older streetlights with energy-efficient, light-emitting diode fixtures will lead to annual savings of $189,000 in energy costs and roughly $155,000 for operation and maintenance, saving the town a total of nearly $345,000 a year. The upgrade will also improve traffic safety, with the LEDs providing brighter illumination, enhancing nighttime visibility. The energy efficiency of the new streetlights will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,355 tons a year—the equivalent of taking 290 cars off the road.

The incremental cost of replacing the old fixtures with LEDs, as opposed to conventional lighting, was $1.6 million, and the town will begin to see savings from the incremental-cost investment after a 4-1/2-year payback. In addition to providing the financing, we contributed technical expertise on design, procurement and construction, which are the key elements of Smart Street Lighting NY.

“The Town of Union has been great to work with in the coordination of this initiative,” said April Contreras, associate project engineer, who served as the project manager. “It’s very satisfying to know that these improvements will have a big impact in lowering costs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving safety in the town.”  Contreras also noted that this has been one of the more substantial streetlight upgrades that we’ve been involved with out of our Buffalo Office.  

Smart Street Lighting NY is part of Governor Cuomo’s comprehensive BuildSmart NY initiative to increase energy efficiency at public facilities across the state. Smart Street Lighting NY has the potential to reduce energy consumption for municipalities by 482 gigawatts-hours annually. That is in addition to saving taxpayers $87 million a year, while substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving the safety of communities throughout New York.

Silence is no longer an option in the battle against addiction

Several people from Whitney Point have died from drug related complications very recently. Others have reported property crime that is likely driven by addiction. Moments of silence aren't good enough any more. We need to keep talking about this issue. We need to keep fighting. We need to keep educating. We need to speak up to our friends, family and neighbors. We need to do everything that we can to save every life that we can. We need to fix this.

The gravity of this epidemic cannot be understated. We have repeatedly seen that the opiate and addiction crisis that we are experiencing knows no boundaries. It continues to effect us all. None of our communities are untouched. This is one of the worst public health crisis' in our life time and it's here in our back yard.

As if heroin wasn't bad enough, a new drug has made it to Broome County which is likely responsible for the recent rise in overdoses and deaths. The details are in the article above but it's safe to say, death is being distributed by drug dealers in our area.

We have a very strong and tightly knit community here in Whitney Point, which is why I am asking everyone to take action. Not just in Whitney Point, but all across Broome County, New York State and our country. People are dying. Our families are struggling. This is our problem. This is everyone's problem. And it needs our attention and passion.

Many of us have probably felt moments of helplessness as we read about this crisis or watch someone we know and love struggle. I'm here to remind everyone that we are not helpless. We can help people get the attention that they need to deal with their addiction. We can save lives. We have to speak up. We have to open the door. We can't afford to just sit aside. We have to be proactive.

I know how much many of you love this community and love this area. I certainly count myself among that group. I am proud of who we are. So let's rise up and fix this.

If you are someone who is struggling with addiction or considering using these drugs, I am here to remind you that you are loved. Heroin and the substances that are being passed off as heroin are not worth your life. We are here for you. We care about you. There is help for you out there and there is life after addiction and drug use. A good one. It's waiting for you. We want you here and we are asking you to reach out. We know how hard it is. But we're asking you to reach out and get on the road to redemption because we care about you and we know you can do it.

CCE Broome holds farmers market ribbon cutting

In advance of the June 25th opening of the new Broome County Regional Farmers Market, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County recently hosted a ribbon cutting at the new facility.

Joining CCE Broome executive director Victoria Giarratano at the event were area farmers and CCE staffers as well as county and state officials including Richard Ball, Commissioner of New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, and State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.

Located behind the CCE Broome headquarters on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson, the year-round market will open on Saturdays, beginning this week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The 6,700-square-foot space will include room for 36 local vendors and a commercial kitchen.

“Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is looking forward to having a vibrant market that will bring people from all areas of the region to buy and sell in Broome County,” says Giarratano. “The ability to support food access and aggregation of local products for larger markets will enable the Agriculture Community to move to the next level.”

Giarratano says that within the next few months the facility will add a garden and open a Taste of New York gift shop.

"We’re also looking at opening a Tuesday market,” she says. “That could happen in early August. Then in the fall, we’ll add a Sunday artisan craft and vintage antique market that we call 'Shabby Chic.'"
