I was browsing Blick Art Supply's art lesson ideas for projects I might want to do, and as soon as I read this one, I knew I had to share it on Tumblr.

I think we should all do this and post our results. It looks like a really fun game.

I also think it would be a fun game to play with a group of friends in person. With friends, you can also make up your own sets of instructions in addition to or instead of the ones I have here.

You do it on a gridded circle, or on graph paper. If using graph paper, do squares wherever it says "ring."

Preparation (altered slightly by me from Blick original for use on Tumblr rather than in classroom. The link takes you to the original)

start with a gridded circle or graph paper (or draw your own gridded circle on blank paper)

2. Gather a bunch of colored pencils, markers, highlighters, crayons, etc. Some of the spaces are small and some are large, so gather lots of tip types/thicknesses

3. Remember: 1) There are no winners and no losers. 2) There is no "wrong" way to interpret given instructions. 3) You are encouraged to think "outside the box." Try to think of a unique way to complete an instruction that probably won't be the same way everyone else is doing it.

this makes me sad, because my local one has the BEST employees, great click and collect, and I never have to deal with Michael's if I don't want to.

I know from various sources that the employees have been struggling with horrible corporate mismanagement for awhile now and this is literally just a case of the people who "own" the stores do not know their asses from a spreadsheet in the ground.

So these people who actually give a crap about the company will all be out of a job while the pigs at the top just slop it up and get their tax breaks.

Meanwhile my choices for brick and mortar just became Michael's or an hour drive up the peninsula for University Arts or Blick's storefront.

Side Note: there is a new hobby lobby nearby, but they are only a valid choice if I ever decide I want to go to jail for arson.

Craft stores have an advantage that a lot of other stores do not have in the digital age, they sell stuff crafters like to browse through in person, they sell stuff crafters want to touch and look at up close before buying, they sell stuff artists want to see in action before dropping several thousand dimes on them. Very few businesses have that advantage, anymore. There is no reason but corporate greed that this had to happen.

I don't really have a political issue with Michael's but their employees never seem to know where anything is, and going in there is a chore. Plus that "coupon" everyone loses their shit over only makes one non-sale, non-copic, non-high-end product, cost what it fucking should have cost in the first fucking place.

Now, obviously, for my art business purchases I do Jet Pens and Blick online, (sometimes Jerry's or Cheap Joe's), for that stuff, because I order when I get low on ink and nibs and watercolor stock and paint. I am running a business after all, I need to have tools ready to go and my lists ready to buy. But for hobby crafts, I really liked being able to go "ooo that would be fun, I should see if Joann's have the stuff I need I could do that today!"

Painting Webpage and Application

Client: Blick Art Supplies

Focus: When starting a new artistic medium, it can be daunting to understand all the ins and outs of everything that goes along with it such as knowing how much water to mix in with the paint, different ways to apply the paint to the canvas, and the best type of canvas to use with different types of paint or product. For this reason, it can take quite some time to learn a new medium.

Need: When artists pick up the brush, spray can, sketching pencils, clay, etc., they want to use their tools and get to work creating something incredible. However, trying out a new medium can put a pause in their ability to execute their creations as they learn. Therefore, being able to bridge that gap will give artists the ability to get to their creations more quickly by allowing them to gain skills faster.

Expected Result: An application that provides tools and tutorial videos while also possessing an index of necessary information needed to make informed decisions on product choice per medium exploration.

Components: Included in this application will be a color mixer that allows the user to choose the type of product they have (such as a 24 pack of gauche paint) which they would like to mix for a desired end color. This part of the application will assess the colors of paint as well as the type of paint to display the exact ratio, in the form of paint blobs, which the user needs to mix together to get the desired color. Secondly, there will be a section where the user may choose the type of medium they are exploring and find tutorial videos and exercises to work towards learning the medium. Next, there will be a section where the user may browse the proper supplies that are best suited for each medium and finally, direct access to the Blick store where they may buy supplies.

Execution: Create a webpage and desktop application that uses the above tools to give artists their creative freedom.

Ah, the quietly beautiful mistletoe, so closely associated with Victorian Christmas holiday traditions. In Köhler’s Medizinalpflanzen here in Mann Library’s special collections, we’ve found such an irresistibly fetching rendition of this plant that we can’t help but spend a moment to ponder it—and share our musings with you!

Many of us will know mistletoe—neatly clipped, bound in bright red ribbon and hung aloft in a well-trafficked location during the winter holiday season—as an invitation to nip a quick kiss from a friend who may be the subject of some (possibly secret) admiration. But did you know that mistletoe—a semi-parasitic plant native to Europe, most often found growing on apple, pear, nut, evergreen, chestnut, and poplar trees—has a rather long history as a wish-granting agent in cultural lore? Both Celtic and Norse mythologies attribute sacred powers to the mistletoe plant. And ancient Romans and Greeks associated mistletoe with some considerable capacity to promote not only true love and fertility, but peace between warring nations as well. Which is giving at least a few of us here at Mann Library some added incentive to include mistletoe in our holiday decorations this year.

Given this honored place in Europe’s cultural history, perhaps it comes as no surprise that mistletoe continues to attract some attention as a clinical medicinal as well. No, it is not, at least not yet, an FDA approved cancer drug, but some studies, particularly in Europe, have shown some effectiveness in improving cancer-related symptoms, reducing side effects of chemotherapy, and stimulating the human immune system. Undoubtedly more research is needed to provide more definitive directives here, but again we say, the story is promising.

Köhler’s Medizinalpflanzen ranks as one of the most important and easily one of the most beautiful herbals of 19th century Europe. While publisher F. E. Köhler is often cited as its author, Claus Nissen, the renowned historian of botanical illustration, attributes authorship of the content for this compendium to Prussian physician Hermann Adolph Köhler (1834-1879), who devoted much of his career to research in the incipient field of pharmacology. In the early 1880s, German botanist Gustav Pabst began developing and editing the work for sale in installments, which were subsequently organized and published as a multi-volume compilation.  Describing over 400 plants from Europe, North America and various European colonies, Köhler’s Medizinalpflanzen evokes a particular historical moment as well:  Detailed information about the featured plants’ chemical properties and possible applications provided with each description reflects the intensifying interest in exploring the possible commercial uses of the world’s resources for the industrial age. Fine artwork by Walther Müller and Carl Friederich Schmidt (the latter known as one of the most important German botanical illustrators of the time) contributed much to the keen anticipation with which German apothecaries awaited the publication’s serial release. Auf der Run­ter­fahrt bes­sert es sich dann wie­der schnell und ich habe freie Sicht auf satt­grü­ne Hügel und Täler. Von Nel­son fah­re ich mit dem Mini­bus­un­ter­neh­men Gol­den Bay Coach­li­nes Rich­tung Abel Tas­man Natio­nal­park über Motue­ka nach Taka­ka. Das Paddeln hat wirklich einen Heidenspaß gemacht, sodass wir es gleich noch ein zweites Mal am Lake Wanaka gemacht haben (Bericht folgt ;)). Mangels Stativ ist das Bild leider weder scharf noch gut, aber vielleicht reicht es, um einen Eindruck zu gewinnen. Nicht weit vom Wharakiki Beach entfernt liegt das Cape Farewell, das auf alle Fälle einen Abstecher Wert ist. Sie können dort spazierengehen und sich Informationstafeln ansehen. Untergwegs können Sie atemberaubende Blicke auf die große, sandige Bucht von Golden Bay genießen. Auf dem Weg in den Norden versorgen wir uns in Motueka mit neuen Vorräten und genug Trinkwasser. Der nördliche Zipfel der Südinsel ist teilweise extrem dünn besiedelt und außerdem nicht an das Trinkwassernetz angeschlossen. Nachdem wir bereits am südlichsten Punkt der Südinsel waren, wollen wir auch den nördlichsten Ort besuchen und tuckern mit Bronto in Richtung Golden Bay.
