Irene Cris Soria: On the Court and Beyond
Irene Cris Paton-Og Soria is a dedicated women's basketball athlete whose journey embodies the sport's demanding physical and mental aspects. Years of rigorous training, honed skills, and strategic thinking have shaped her into a resilient competitor. Teamwork and unwavering passion fuel her pursuit of excellence on the court, making her a testament to the dedication required in women's basketball.
I focus on my personal growth ra external expectation. I remind myself that i am doing this for my passion and development. Breathing exercises, positive self-talk, and maintaining a strong mindset help me stay calm under pressure. Communication with my support system also helps in handling expectations.
Takes time, so the process and be patient with yourself. Always give your best effort, learn from failures, and never stop improving. Surround yourself with supportive people and remember to enjoy the journey.
Balancing training with school family, and social life requires time management and discipline. I set a schedule that prioritizes both academics and training while ensuring I have time for family and friends. I also make sure to get enough rest and avoid distractions that could affect my performance in both sports and studies.
I've have to give up a lot of free time, including social events and personal leisure, to train and compete. Sometimes, I miss family gatherings or outings with friends. However, I see these sacrifices as necessary steps to achieving my goals.
My sports has taught me discipline, resilience, and teamwork, which help me in other areas of life.It has also built my confidence, improved my time management skills, and introduced me to amazing people and experiences.

When life hurts, dance heals and when you trust the process there’s no impossible.

I recently had the pleasure of catching up with my childhood friend and teammate, Matthew Benedict Cabrega, a remarkable 17-year-old dancer who has made significant progress in the world of dancesport, particularly in the standard category. I still remember the day I encouraged Matthew to join dancesport. He was hesitant at first, but I knew he had the talent and potential to shine on the dance floor. With a little persuasion, he began attending training sessions and workshops, and it quickly became clear that he was a natural. His dedication and enthusiasm for dance were infectious, and it wasn’t long before he became an official member of Dancesport Team Ormoc.
Matthew’s hard work has truly paid off. He has consistently excelled in competitions, where he has won multiple titles. His commitment to the sport has taken him to various competitions, and he always returns home with medals that reflect his talent and determination. Recently, he achieved a significant milestone by winning six gold medals at the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet, a testament to his skill and teamwork with his dance partner.
Matthew’s passion for dance has not gone unnoticed. He is now a recipient of a government scholarship program that supports young athletes in their pursuit of excellence. This opportunity not only helps him continue his dance education but also motivates him to push his limits further. With the upcoming Palarong Pambansa on the horizon, Matthew is more determined than ever to showcase his skills and represent his team with pride.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Matthew’s journey is his mindset. He often shares a saying that resonates deeply with him: “Expect nothing, appreciate everything.” This philosophy has guided him through the ups and downs of competition, reminding him to stay grounded and grateful for every opportunity that comes his way. It’s a powerful reminder that success is not just about winning but also about the experiences and lessons learned along the way.

A day in the life of a college student-athlete is anything but ordinary. From the moment I wake up, my schedule is packed with a balancing act that requires discipline, time management, and a deep commitment to both my academic and athletic pursuits. The day often starts early, with the first challenge being getting up and ready for a morning workout or practice session. As a student-athlete, maintaining peak physical condition is essential, and this means fitting in rigorous training before the day even begins.

Hard Work Beats Talent
Last March 15th, me, my classmates, and our subject teacher, Mr. Dajes, went to visit the Ormoc City Superdome and witnessed the basketball game between Oregon and Wolf Grey. Although we arrived haffway through the game, we still enjoyed and felt thrilled watching them play. Once the 4th quarter of the game ended, Mr. Dajes gave us the opportunity to interview one of the players of our choice.
Here we have Mr. Jeric Simbajon, a 22-years-old basketball player of the team Oregon and a student at Western Leyte College (WLC). He shares that his team worked hard for the "liga" or league held by basketball clubs. Mr. Simbajon stated that his team members has always been cooperative when it comes to team practices and although there were times when they're unable to do so, they still managed to work hard through individual trainings. Overall, Mr. Simbajon enjoyed their game with Wolf Grey. His message for the aspiring basketball players is to "Never give up and never stop training, that's it. Because hard work beats talent."

My Best Childhood Memory
My best childhood memory was back when I was around 9-10 years old. Back when my father was still alive, his company and work friends usually held annual summer outings with the family. This was the first time I joined the summer outing and we went to different spots such as the Agas-Agas Bridge and Padre Burgos Beach. These two spots were the ones that I remembered the most as I was captured by the beauty of Padre Burgos Beach and the heights of Agas-Agas Bridge. This was a very fun and memorable memory for me since I got to spend a lot of time with my family together and went on to different places. I miss this type of gathering and my father a whole lot.

Banner Prep 🖌️
Last Friday, me and the members of the SSG spent the entire afternoon until 7PM to prepare our banner for our entry in yesterday's Earth Hour! Although I wasn't able to join them yesterday, the process of creating the banner was still a whole lot of fun and laughter.

The Unpopular Path
As a 3rd year student, the excitement, thrill, nervousness, and fear of the challenges and responsibilities upcoming in the next school year has been up in my mind a lot more recently. Although I am happy that I'm finally near the end of my school life, I remain uncertain of the degree that I'll be holding as well as the future that I'll be leading once I graduate.
You see, in my whole life, I never got to fully explore my passion for dancing due to the limitations set up by my parents. They wanted me to focus more on school and if dancing was ever involved, they wanted me to join performances that were school based only. Yes, I am thankful for the love, care, and support my family has shown to me but I am not exactly happy with me being chained up by responsibilities and the limitations of exploration for my passion.
So, I've decided that once I graduate, I'll choose my passion over my career first. Although I originally planned to apply for a job immediately after graduating, I've changed my mind and decided to solely focus on my dancing career first for at least a year and a half or two before I proceed to applying for a company/establishment. This time, I want to choose my love for dancing first as a way of celebrating my freedom from school life. I'll finally be able to join and perform on stage in different cities with my group and be able to fulfill my longing for dance. By then, once I finally decide to apply for a job, I'll finally have my mind, heart, and soul at peace.

My Life on the Daily
Here's a representation of my life as a TM student. Ever since I became a 3rd year student, I've noticed that a lot of things have changed and more responsibilities has been added on my plate. But still, I am grateful for the opportunities that this school year has given to me.
My life varies on the daily. On other days I'm chilled out while the other days...not so much. On the days when I have classes, I hangout with my friends in school and during lunch breaks, I eat lunch together with my partner. On the days when I'm off, I either just surf the internet, memorize TikTok dance videos, or do school stuff. And of course, on Sundays, I give my time for my family and dance training. Overall, this year has been hectic but also enjoyable because of the people I'm surrounded with.

By: Cordero, Sheena Marie
BSTM 3202
Lucky to have met someone passionate about sports! Marc Zacarias has experience in not just one, but three sports! He is a former soccer player and basketball player, and he is currently a cyclist. For him, sports serve as an escape from his problems and have taught him valuable lessons, including teamwork. He began playing soccer in Grade 4 and joined the basketball Liga from Grade 5 until Grade 12. Now, he actively participates as a cyclist.
He is also still active in basketball, playing during his free time because it makes him happy, healthy, and fit. Marc believes that sports not only benefit him physically but also shape his mentality and overall character. It made him wiser and more competitive, yet he still finds joy in doing what he loves. For him, sports are more about entertainment than competition.
