If I had a nickel for everytime a WB show targeted to teens used the song "I only have eyes for you" by The Flamingos during an episode with flashbacks to the 60's, where the only purpose of the flashbacks is to showcase a relationship that directly mirrors that of the super-powered protagonist and their on-again off-again relationship with their love interest, where a character is immune to bullet wounds and another is shot to death, I'd have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

2x21: No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we? Helpless? Puppets? No, the big moments are gonna come, you can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are.

I think a lot of parallels can be drawn between BTVS 1x12 and 2x17. They both demonstrate the loss of a previous safety net. In 1x12, it's the school, and in 2x17, it's main character plot armour.

There's a lot of death in the show, but it has always been completely unknown characters, or characters who were given a very brief sympathetic scene, and then are immediately killed off.

As soon as Angel appears in Jenny's classroom, the logical part of my brain was screaming that she wasn't going to survive, but so much of me was convinced that Buffy would appear to save her at the last moment, because, up until now, she (or another character) has saved every main character.

It then goes one step further, because evil has invaded not only the school, but also people's homes (which was already a recurring theme this episode because of Angel breaking into their houses). First of all, Giles' home is set up so romantically, which is horribly juxtaposed with Jenny's body. But then, Buffy's home, which is regularly seen as a place of safety (in 2x16, Xander and Cordelia run there to hide from the other girls), but in that setting we have to watch Buffy and Willow react to the news.

Finally, Willow has to take over Jenny's class, thus taking the position of an adult. Regularly, Buffy is viewed through a lens of having to grow up to fast, but here, the same thing happens to Willow, and it is heartbreaking to watch.
