Zentsuji is in Kagawa, on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s temple 75 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. This temple is especially famous—it's the birthplace of Kūkai, also known as Kobo Daishi. He founded the Shingon school of Buddhism, and started the entire Shikoku pilgrimage.
These images show parts of the vast temple complex. One photo captures the main hall with its wide layered roof and purification pavilion. Another shows a peaceful courtyard, framed by green-roofed buildings and a mountain backdrop. The tall wooden gate, the quiet paths, and the curved bridge give this place a calm, timeless feel.
Zentsuji has the largest grounds of any Shikoku temple. There are many halls to explore, each with its own purpose and atmosphere. One structure is Shakado Hall, enshrining Shaka Nyorai—the historical Buddha. The modern white hall with a statue out front reflects the temple’s active role today as a site of worship and remembrance.
The bell tower and stone bridge are also part of what makes Zentsuji special. These elements blend religious symbolism with Japanese architectural beauty. The golden stupa beside the bridge adds a touch of brightness among the pines.
The arched bridge leads toward the Daishi Hall—believed by many to mark Kūkai’s birthplace. Pilgrims and tourists come to walk these paths and reflect in silence.

Shidoji (志度寺) is Temple 86 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, located in Sanuki, Kagawa Prefecture. The temple’s principal image is Juichimen Kannon (十一面観世音菩薩), the Eleven-Faced form of Kannon Bodhisattva, known for seeing and relieving the suffering of all beings.
This temple is rich in folklore. According to legend, it is linked to the tale of a tragic undersea pearl diver, a noblewoman who sacrificed herself—an origin story deeply tied to compassion and rebirth.
The photos highlight the temple’s character:
The main hall adorned with purple curtains and intricate woodwork above the entrance.
A stone stele carved with rows of seated Buddhas and inscriptions, likely honoring past devotees.
A triad of bronze Buddha statues, each sitting serenely under tree shade.
A wide shot of the main hall plaza, complete with incense burners and ema boards.
The towering Niō gate guarded by fearsome statues and giant woven waraji sandals.

#DhamekStupa is one of the most famous and #Buddhist #Stupas located in #Sarnath near #Varanasi in #UttarPradesh, India. Originally built in 249 BCE during the reign of king Ashoka of the Maurya Dynasty, this massive and prominent structure has over time gone through several expansions and additions. This solid cylindrical shaped Stupa made of red bricks and stone in its present position stands at a height of 43.6 m with a diameter of 28 m. The significance of this sacred place is that it marks the spot where #LordBuddha preached the first sermon to His five disciples after attaining enlightenment in #BodhGaya. #BuddhistPilgrims from around the world visit Sarnath to circumambulate the holy Stupa and worship #LordBuddha. Yakuriji (八栗寺) is temple 85 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is located in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. The principal image is Sho Kannon (聖観世音菩薩), the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
This temple is perched high on Mt. Gokenzan and is accessed via a steep ropeway or mountain trail. The surrounding forest creates a serene atmosphere, and in autumn, the changing leaves bring vibrant color to the temple grounds.
The red two-story tahōtō pagoda is a standout feature, nestled among towering cedar trees and delicate maple branches. Several Jizō statues rest along the stone retaining wall. The main hall, richly adorned with purple curtains and guarded by komainu, is a striking contrast to the natural setting.
Visitors pass through a traditional tiled sanmon gate bearing the temple crest, entering a courtyard flanked by wooden temple buildings. In the distance, the green-tiled rooftops of the main sanctuary rise against a dramatic cliffside backdrop.
This is a temple full of mountain air and quiet reverence.
