no joke but what I really want for Buddy Daddies as a fandom is to make fanart and fanfic post present time ep12 where Rei wears an arm orthosis when working.
I think varied disability aids being represented would be fantastic, and personally would write Rei as someone being deeply proud of something he's done for his family, but also understanding with time that using an orthosis also helps him at work and in raising Miri. with a giant portion of mobility/motorics aids being represented by prosthetics, seeing more variety and exploring it in fiction would also help making a step in normalising disability treatments.

Actually Rei has such a beautiful heart.
It is heavily hinted that this man grew up in a harsh environment where no normal childhood pleasures were allowed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’ve seen him forced to kill the dog (did Rei show affection to it and his father Boss forced him to remove it with cold blood so no such feelings can grow under his roof?)
And yet, in the first episode we’ve seen him adopt a stray kitten. And on top of that, it sought refuge next to him when it felt Kazuki’s intention to kick it out, it thought of Rei as a safe person.
Tumblr media
We’ve seen this man go through (hinted) such a harsh upcoming and yet, he still has the heart to take care of defenceless beings, even if his show of affection was heavely impaired
I mean, just look at this moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until episode 3, Rei wouldn’t even accept Miri to call him Papa, and now he’s falling asleep next to her while she’s sick
This says a lot about harsh parents. Their abusive education won’t change their kids, to be more like them, to remove by force the parts that aren’t “acceptable”. Instead, the kids are only hurt in the process and will have to wait years until they’re on their own before they have the freedom and safety to live life in their own way…
Kind of like how lgbt+ kids from homophobic families must grow up and hide their identity before they are on their own…

Rei Suwa and the psychology
of holding a cigarette
Tumblr media
You have probably seen this vintage poster often. I first encountered this via Whores of Yore.
First off, you have to give allowances that this strange psychoanalysis done by a certain doctor in the 1950s that appeared in a magazine was the time smoking was seen as glamorous and sexy without thinking of the health consequences. Tobacco companies were getting the leeway forcing the people to smoke with their excessive advertising campaign. Misogyny in the West was blatantly rampant.
This article, from a 1959 issue of Caper Magazine, shows a few examples of what psychoanalyst Dr. William Neutra hypothesized after observing the ways people chose to smoke. According to his psychoanalysis, the body language of the method an individual uses to hold the cigarette shines a light onto their character traits, exposing their personality type, moods, and insecurities. If you are a smoker, perhaps you recognize some of these yourself? ( x )
I want to believe that the “Buddy Daddies” writers did some research about the psychological makeup of their characters apart from their design, costuming, and characterisation. They have prototypes to convey their messages.
If they came across this poster and the accompanying article, would that be so amusing?
So far, I have seen Rei holds his cigarette in two different ways.
Based on the examples, Rei on Episode 4 is Type E.
Very tense individual, direct, straight-forward, inclined towards stubbornness

Episode 2: The Kiss of Death
On the second episode where the scenes take place at their loft, the way he holds his cig is Type I.
Very pessimistic, excessive in business caution
The descriptions sort of fit him and the way his mind operates.
The most important question is : are we going to see him smoking during the assassination duty, which I doubt as he seems to be more focused, more intense, as if he were in a trance. He is a monomaniac, his killer instinct activated and his laser eyes focused on the targets. He is a different person when he’s doing the job. As if he has a split personality.
Cigarette smoking entails curbing the stress and boredom.
This quickly changes when he’s at home. Still cautious, but freer, more himself, his downtime. And maybe more stressed or bored?
Hopefully, Miri is giving him the will to live, a sunshine in a dark place they are in, and his newfound relationship with Kazuki as a co-parent.

Ok but consider a (Happy Ending, AshEiji in Japan) Banana Fish and Buddy Daddies crossover/interaction.
Miri is lost (again) and Ash sees her. He goes into investigative protect mode trying to reunite her with her “Papas”. Her info does not help at all. ‘What the hell is an oil baron?’ Ash wonders.
Only for Eiji to offhandedly mention his cousin and her Moms groupchat. “Yeah, It sounds like a whole new level of gossip. This one girl has two Papas who have really odd jobs and the moms are all obsessed with.”
“Eiji, what is their kid’s name? Or did they mention the Papas names?”

I don't think Misaki has any "evil" ulterior motives for example, working with the organization motives, but she didn't really think taking Miri to live with her again through, did she? She has cancer right? So in a couple of months/years she will probably die.
If she wants to set her life straight and be a better mother to Miri, then good for her! But, the best option at the moment for her is to co-parent with Kazuki and Rei so that when Misaki inevitably passes, Miri still maintains the support and love she's built with her papas over the past year.
Misaki can still get an apartment nearby and spend time with Miri- maybe have Miri live with her on the weekends. But Rei and Kazuki should still be Miri's number one support system.
Also, Misaki, despite having cancer in her throat, still smokes! The only reason why she didn't is because Kazuki told her there's a no smoking policy in the house. This means Misaki can still fall back into her bad habits, and tbh I'm very worried for Miri now that she's back with her mom.

I love that this week's ep expands upon Kazuki's concerns about being a good enough parent. Like, sure, those imagination spots of delinquent teen Miri were funny, but I feel like my own parents had them too. And I def keep worrying for similar reasons with my own younger sibling.
So it was lovely to watch Miri make up with the kid she was feuding with and help lead the group when they got lost. And seeing Rei and Kazuki realize that the kids are alright put a wide grin on my face. Although the tension between their work as assassins and their wish to raise a good person will inevitably come up again and again as she grows older.
Anyways, an excellent summary of parental anxiety lol

I can't believe none of you mentioned that there's plants/flowers everywhere in/around Diner Nest in the ending.
where once Rei's gardening hobby (as seen most prominently in action in episode 4) was specifically relegated to the balcony in the apartment, it's everywhere in their diner. It's in Miri's room with a small bonsai, it's a part of the diner's aesthetic, it's something that accentuates their outside.
Rei decorated their joint nest with plant life everywhere, like a good bird dad.
