buffy summers is iconic for many reasons but one of her best moments must be when she frees a bunch of wage slaves from employment a hell dimension and fights the capitalist demons literally using a giant hammer and sickle as weapons. buffy said workers of the world unite and slay

I think that the Thing that gets people about btvs when they talk about 'bad' characters and forgiving characters for their evil misdeeds is that the show is fundamentally about being a human... in completely unhuman conditions. Like especially when we talk about Spike and spuffy, there's always people asking 'but how can you excuse ___' and the thing is, its not about excusing certain behaviors, but rather giving them context that wouldn't exist in our world. Like spuffy s6 is super toxic- they hit each other, use each other, generally are abusive, and while that behavior is not excusable or forgivable, the context is that we have two characters who are literally mortal enemies trying to sort out complex human feelings for each other.

Its about taking flawed humans and putting them in fucked up situations AND THEN also taking away their soul, giving them a soul, giving them superhuman strength, giving them trauma that a human in the real world could never ever have because the supernatural conditions that perfectly aligned to fuck them over simply don't exist in reality. And in doing all of this, the show stretches the limits of the human condition, asks what ifs that we can't pretend to know the real answers to. Thats whats so great about the show, but also kinda hard to wrap your mind around, especially as a first time viewer

Rewatching Buffy and I love Riley just having a poster in his dorm room that just says Balls and has pictures of different sports balls on it. Like yeah, he really has a personality huh.

The Zeppo is a ridiculous episode. Like on one hand it's actually a great character study of Xander and I think one of Nicholas' best acting moments and the character is actually likeable here and it's a cute time. I actually even like the ridiculous side plot of the Scoobies fighting their "biggest threat yet" while Xander does his thing.

But also drives me crazy how boring the first half is or how Cordelia is straightforwardly cast as a narrative antagonist here as if Xander didn't CHEAT on her and she's clearly still hurt or how the show expects us to believe it's not out of character how after three seasons of being fully included as one of the team's biggest assets (he went down with her to rescue Jesse in the second episode! he brought Buffy back to life! he's fought vampires one on one before!) everyone is suddenly excluding him from the group to keep him safe like I get the attempt here was to highlight how he's the only one in the group with no special abilities now but like...be for fucking real.

I love so many things about "School Hard".

I love how Spike crashes into town. I love how we cut to said crash into town right after Xander's "jinx", and the implication, both logical and hilarious, that by the "you know this is your fault for saying that" rules of the show, Xander is technically culpable for all the good and bad Spuffiness that ensues.

I love that we get the first ever Spuffy fight scene, and I love "No, Spike. It's gonna hurt a lot."

I love how the first time we ever see Spike in human-face, it's in response to Drusilla walking in, how it's established almost from the start that he will drop being the Big Bad to tend to the person he loves.

And the person he loves isn't Buffy, not yet, but Drusilla is already very bothered by her mere existence, and repeatedly urges him to kill her...

...even as she gives him that smudged cut on his cheek to match the red paint smear on Buffy's face just a few scenes later.

It'll always be incredibly funny to me that they tied Spike up to a chair in Something Blue but somehow left his hands free. Like, if he can escape whenever he wants, what's the point??? 🤣
