don’t know if this has been talked about, but its a fun contrast that in season 2 Buffy says to Angel that kissing him makes her want to die (not something i’d personally want to hear from someone I want to kiss btw) but during season 6 she kisses and fucks around with Spike in order to feel more alive…

I love so many things about "School Hard".
I love how Spike crashes into town. I love how we cut to said crash into town right after Xander's "jinx", and the implication, both logical and hilarious, that by the "you know this is your fault for saying that" rules of the show, Xander is technically culpable for all the good and bad Spuffiness that ensues.
I love that we get the first ever Spuffy fight scene, and I love "No, Spike. It's gonna hurt a lot."
I love how the first time we ever see Spike in human-face, it's in response to Drusilla walking in, how it's established almost from the start that he will drop being the Big Bad to tend to the person he loves.
And the person he loves isn't Buffy, not yet, but Drusilla is already very bothered by her mere existence, and repeatedly urges him to kill her...
...even as she gives him that smudged cut on his cheek to match the red paint smear on Buffy's face just a few scenes later.

Buffy Rants:
I continue to make new Headcanons as I rewatch Buffy!! I’m on season two already. I just watched episode eight: The Dark Age. So Giles and his friends used to summon this demon, Eyghon, to get high. Ancient people who worshipped this same demon summoned him for bacchanals and orgies, according to Willow’s research. I’ve now decided that Giles and his friends were having orgies and he and Ethan Rayne have definitely fucked!! Who else thinks so?!

When She Was Bad is a great fucking episode that addresses the emotional trauma of the life of a slayer. It does make me sad the Buffy was clearly looking for help, and she never really got it from the people around her. She had to get her own catharsis by destroying the masters bones, but I'm not sure her friends even knew what the real problem was. I hate that Buffy was never given the grace to just be unhappy for longer than a second throughout the show.

ANGEL
I hear this place serves coffee. Thought maybe you and I should get some...
(nothing from Buffy)
...sometime.
(nothing from Buffy)
If you want.
Buffy considers him for a long moment, then:
BUFFY
Yeah.
Angel brightens.
BUFFY (cont'd)
Sometime. I'll let you know.
And she gets up and goes. Xander, Willow, Angel stare at her departing back. Xander kind of respects what she just did. So does Angel.
ANGLE - BUFFY - WALKING AWAY
Tracking backwards with her. Letting her grow into a tight close-up. So we can see how pleased she is. Then she walks out of frame and we-
FADE OUT:
END OF ACT FOUR
...
There's something about Angel respecting what Buffy did there that I kind of love, tbh, in some ways it's so ridiculous--they're both so ridiculous here--and yet somehow great, too.
I guess that Buffy's being strong, in a way? Or at least putting on airs of being strong?
I mean, this whole episode started with Buffy wanting to date Angel, of course, but him essentially turning her down (even though he of course wanted her, too), because with him being a vampire, he feared that things could get out of control. And he would be right. But Buffy, being unhappy with that--and feeling like he treated her like a kid there--retaliated by going out with that college guy... who was part of a cult, who then tried to sacrifice her and Cordy to a demon. So by the end, of course, Angel rethinks his earlier thoughts and Buffy gets what she wants. You'd think she'd jump for it, but no: she's playing it cool and making him work for it, actually.
Edit: Like, there's just something about this attitude about Buffy's that's why Angel loves her, actually. And really her alone, because no one else would make him respect them like this, probably. If you're not making Angel(us) respect you with your strength, he doesn't have time for you.

Yes, "Reptile Boy" can be about the inherent awesomeness of being a teenage girl beating up creepy frat boys, and yes, it can also be about the inherent creepiness of said teenage girl being there in the first place, and yes, it can also be a jumping-off point for all kinds of rambling discussion about Angel and his own brand of creepiness and the state of his and Buffy's relationship and the fact that he actually is relatively useful in this episode...
...but for me, right now at least, it's about Giles, and how he's pushing Buffy to train harder, fight better, be more dedicated - something that is driving her up the wall right now, but which he explains as "I drive you too hard, because I know what you have to face."
Which forms an interesting parallel to S6, where Giles is also trying to get Buffy to do something she doesn't want to do (in that instance, function as an adult on her own) because he thinks that's the best way to help her survive. In S6, that's the exact opposite of what she needs, and it's debatable whether his tactics here are what she needs either, but I think it's fair to say that both instances are coming from a place of genuine caring.
In a lot of ways, Giles is starting from way behind the line when it comes to being able to care for and take care of Buffy. Standard Watcher training doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for treating one's Potential/Slayer as a whole person, or as anything but a killing machine. Buffy in particular is, by nature and nurture, about as far from a "textbook" Slayer as it's possible to be. She hasn't even been working with Giles for a full year yet, against decades on his part of a much more traditional mindset. On top of this, they have distinctly opposite personalities, which probably doesn't make it any easier for him to get a handle on what she might need mentally/emotionally/socially/etc.
But he does try, here and in other places. I'm not saying he's perfect, and I'm really not getting into the good parent/bad parent discourse surrounding him, Joyce, or anyone else. Just saying, sometimes love is stored in the questionable, played-for-laughs attempt to make sure your Slayer can handle a monster trying to whack her from behind.
