Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Five photos of a small, solid black beetle shaped like a ladybug, sitting on the stem of a small flowering grass. It is very shiny, with thin segmented antenna. Say hello to the Dimorphic Jumping Spider, or Maevia inclemens! These guys get their name because the males will typically have one of two body patterns, which each have their own courting displays.
This particular spider is a female, which you can determine because of her big orange stripes that go down the sides of her abdomen!
Photo location: Hunt County, TX
As for the males, here are their two morphs:

Photos by spidereyes2020 & David Hill, respectively.
On the left is the dark, "tufted" morph male, and on the right is the grey morph!
These two morphs were originally thought to be different species because their behavior was so different, but interestingly enough females will receive both types similarly.
In the video below, you can watch a dark morph male doing his courting display where he will stand on his 3 hind pairs of legs and wave his front arms around.
youtube
Compare that to the next video, which shows a grey morph male doing his courtship! He crawls low to the ground and taps his 2 front pairs of legs in front of him.
youtube
Interestingly, while females don't tend to have a preference between morphs, they do prefer larger tufted males (compared to smaller tufted males) and smaller grey males (compared to larger grey males) (Busso & Rabosky, 2016).

It’s also useful for if you’re afraid of bugs!
For years I’ve been mildly afraid of some bugs. Not all, in fact there are some bugs that I have always adored, it’s just been a couple I’ve genuinely been afraid of, but seeing them as just small animals has helped so much with it! Over the past year and a half I’ve been able to get somewhat close photos of bugs and removed ones I’m afraid of from my room BY MYSELF!!!! Because they’re just small animals!!!
Granted I’ve had somewhat of an advantage on this, because there’s also always been bugs I’ve been a super big fan of all my life
Look!!! My insect photos!

A gorgeous green beetle I saw in a woods!

A pretty moth from the stream by my house! Its pattern and colours remind me of a snowy owl!! They’re just small very biologically different birds!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Friendly massive snail that was outside an aviary at the local animal reserve! I’ve always loved snails, me and my friend used to do snail racing
And a moth I captured in my room all by myself!
you guys Need to start seeing bugs as animals im not even joking anymore. the second u start seeing them as tiny animals the more your world opens up and the more you accept different types of life Into that world. youll begin accepting that even life you cant understand is still worth living. and itll legitimately make you a better person. fuck
