Today, I started my journey...

September 1, 2018 - Throughout my life, I’ve been trying to find meaning.

“Who am I meant to be? What am I meant to do? How do I see the world and what does it all mean to me?”

These are some of the questions that rambled in my head as I was growing up. I found myself loving film and studied Communication Arts in college. I tried working for the film industry for about a year but put it on hold due to personal reasons. To cut it short, I didn’t really find meaning in my work in the entertainment and art world. I then accepted a corporate job at my hometown and for about a year, I immersed myself in the world of business. I told myself that I was at my 70-30. I was 70% content with my life right now and 30% of me wanted to go out and see the world. One day, that 30% turned into 80% and one particular word came into my head: purpose.

More than meaning - which is more about how you see the world, I began to question my purpose. 

“What is the reason why I do the things I do? What kind of purpose am I serving in this life? Am I making the world a better place or just living for myself?”

I took a very long, hard look at myself and what my life has been so far. I remember feeling depressed for long periods of time, not knowing what I was supposed to do with my life until one day, I noticed the things that I truly cared about: animals and nature.

I grew up in a beach province - literally, beaches are everywhere and I remember the days where I walked so far just to get to the shoreline from the palm trees. Today, that beach is crowded by tourists, party-goers and most of all, trash. I found that my childhood sandbox was slowly becoming a wasteland of alcohol, plastic and foreign business establishments who didn’t respect the environment.

I remember feeling helpless until one day, I stumbled upon a movement on Instagram. Somewhere along the lines of sustainable living and minimalism - I was awe-inspired by how these people lived and how much their lifestyle made some much more sense than how we live today. I came to know about the Zero Waste Movement.  

Baby steps, I say to myself. I knew I had to start with me and so I try to learn as much as I can about going zero waste. Today, happily, my bamboo toothbrushes arrived. I’m so ecstatic to see something physical representing my transition. 

And so, today marks the start of my journey.

To the question of, “What is the meaning of life?” 

This is my reply: purpose.
