Charity sewing today.
I’ve been slowly turning thread clippings and scrap fabric into new fabric for some time. About a month ago, I cut the panels into smaller pieces and added denim so I could use them for zippered bags. My original plan was to make the bags solid on the back, but decided I’d rather hold on to my larger denim pieces for other projects, so the bags are double sided.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Video shows each side and lining of 9 bags, Each of the bags have a side featuring fabric made from thread clippings, arranged on a base layer, covered with tulle, and topstitched. T-shirt yarn was added over the top in random loops and curves. The other side has a landscape design of miscellaneous fabrics, mostly from garments I’ve altered over the past 5-ish years.
I’ll make more eventually. I’ve got plenty of lining material already cut, and my thread bins and scrap boxes fill up fast!
Tumblr media
Edit: decided this side needed a little embellishment, so I grabbed my miscellaneous bead and button boxes and did a bit of hand stitching. Not too much though, my hands don’t like it.

It’s cold where I live so soup is a must at my house. This chicken vegetable soup is not only warming and comforting, I got to use up a chicken carcass and a lot of little scraps of chicken that weren’t enough for a salad but were perfect here. #wastenotwantnot Recipe is in the profile and on my website. #chickenvegetablesoup #vegetablesoup #chickencarcass #chickencarcasssoup #comfortfood https://www.instagram.com/p/CnXIULQJbBy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

You know sometimes you think to yourself, hang on a minute……
We put an orange, along with other stuff into a green smoothie every morning and the peel goes in the bin. Well not anymore!
Thinly peeled, dried in the air fryer, ground to a powder and oh my goodness I couldn’t believe it! The smell for starters, it’s spicy and exotic and fills the room! The taste just blew me away. I’ve been adding it to our overnight oats, to my mug when I make a mocha, even sprinkled a bit in my cup of Earl Grey this morning. It was way better than that French Earl Grey! Only thing with it in drinks, don’t drink the dregs. I even sprinkled some over rice last night.
Who’s a happy girl 🙌

Scrappy Soup
Last week I posted a "recipe" for canned soup and vegetables. Today, though, I'm turning it up. This soup is entirely homemade and, as a really tasty bonus, saves you money and food waste. Good for the environment, cheap, and delicious? No, it's not too good to be true when you freeze vegetable scraps and peels over the course of a few weeks. This soup is also completely customizable to fit whatever ingredients and veggies you have on hand. That's some good soup.
Also, I start school tomorrow! Wish me luck, I'm going to be in a new building so I'm a little nervous :)
Soup Ingredients (everything is optional; amounts depend on how many veggies you have, your preferred broth:grain ratio, the spices you have, etc. I will include my amounts for 6 servings): 6 cups any vegetable scraps (I used carrot peels, broccoli stalks, green bean trimmings, potato peels, sweet potato chunks, onions, kale stalks, etc.), 3 cloves garlic, 1/2 lemon (just the peel is fine), 1 cup dry lentils, 1/2 cup dry long-cooking wild rice, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp paprika, 2 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper, 1 tsp turmeric, 1/2 tbsp red pepper flakes, 1/2 tbsp oregano, 2 1/2 quarts water, 2 tbsp olive oil
Heat oil in the bottom of a large stockpot. Roast garlic in oil until fragrant; add any tough peels or rinds (for me, carrot peels and broccoli rind), including lemon peel (rule of thumb: if you wouldn't/couldn't eat it raw, throw it in). Pour 2 quarts water in the pot. Add spices and herbs; boil. Add rice and lentils, and cook until tender. Note that cooking times may be different, so you may need to add one in before the other. When grains are cooked, add the rest of the vegetable scraps and cook until warmed through. Discard lemon peel and bay leaves, and if you want, any of the tough peels you added at the beginning. Add any more seasonings to taste. I ended up adding a lot more salt and red pepper. Enjoy!

All the leaves found their purpose
In my post last weekend, I showed a pile of fabric leaves I had made from upholstery samples, as well as a small wreath. Today I took the original wreath apart because the gum leaves were too big, and I also wanted to bulk up the fabric wrapped hoop the leaves were attached to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After I used up the all four rings from the 2 broken hoops, I thought about garlands, but every time I see one, I think “that’s not how tree leaves work!” I really wanted to capture the movement of falling leaves, so I dug out a large piece of tulle remnant I had, and made this wall hanging. I need to pick up a dowel to hang it properly.
Tumblr media
With the last of the leaves, I decided to stitch up this quick table mat, and backed it with some wool felt I salvaged several years ago from a damaged coat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, not a bad way to spend a Sunday afternoon. 🙂
Edit to add pic of wall hanging on white background. The tulle virtually disappeared.

Leather: Beyond Fashion's Favorite, A Champion of Recycling
"Leather's Hidden Legacy: A Champion of Recycling and Sustainability"
In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability, leather often stands at the center of debates due to its ties to the fashion industry and animal agriculture. However, beyond the surface, a profound truth emerges: leather is, fundamentally, a recycled material.
Consider the hide gracing your favorite handbag or trusty wallet – it began as a by-product of the meat industry. It's not a novel material crafted exclusively for fashion; it's a latent resource waiting to be repurposed. And repurposed it is, on a significant scale.
Transforming Waste into a Marvel:
Leather production breathes new life into what would otherwise become waste. Picture millions of animal hides needlessly discarded, contributing to landfills and emitting harmful methane. By converting them into leather, we grant these hides a second chance, diverting substantial waste from harming our planet. It's a closed-loop system, utilizing an abundant resource while mitigating environmental impact.
Durability Defying Trends:
More than just a recycled material, leather is a sustainability champion owing to its remarkable durability. A well-crafted leather bag can withstand the test of time, becoming an heirloom passed down through generations. Its innate resilience minimizes wear and tear, diminishing the need for frequent replacements and the associated production costs.
Beyond Eco-Warriors: A Mindful Choice:
Opting for leather becomes a mindful act to reduce one's environmental footprint. It entails buying less, choosing quality over quantity, and investing in pieces that endure. It's an acknowledgment of the craftsmanship that transforms a by-product into a beautiful and utilitarian object.
Challenges and Strides:
Undoubtedly, the leather industry faces challenges. Ethical sourcing, responsible tanning practices, and water usage reduction are critical areas requiring ongoing improvement. Encouragingly, the industry is progressing with innovations like eco-friendly tanning agents, recycled leather alternatives, and conscientious sourcing initiatives leading the way.
Leather's Tomorrow: Sustainable and Ethical:
The trajectory of leather is inseparable from the path of sustainability. Embracing responsible practices and prioritizing ethical sourcing ensures that this extraordinary material continues to champion recycling, embody human craftsmanship, and contribute to a greener future.
Join the Discourse:
Is leather a sustainable choice in your eyes? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! Let's perpetuate the conversation on conscious consumption and ethical fashion.
This blog lays the groundwork for your article. Feel free to elaborate on specific aspects, introduce statistics, weave in personal stories, and tailor the tone to resonate with your target audience.
