The Red Cave The architects pursued the traditional form of a Vietnamese village communal house as the inspiration for the form of this contemporary home. The unique program of the home combines traditional living quarters with a fitness and yoga space. F A C E L I F T --- the original 1960s building had continuous glazing facing north and west so our primary functional concern was to shade that glazing from the hot summer sun without compromising the view out, or access of winter sun whilst improving the aesthetics of the building in an easily built form - phew! Over a period of time there has been immense development in construction techniques. The structural systems have come a long way from mud-brick combinations to RCC frameworks. The earlier builtforms were erected only in order to shelter from sun, wind and rain but now has needs of greater heights, longer spans and intricate works. These structures are also able to counter various loads, pressures and forces. The timeline has also seen an upgrade in material and structural systems. Different types of elements need different types of frameworks satisfying given conditions of loads and forces.

This module helped us in learning:

1. timeline of upgradation of builtforms, usage of materials and properties of material.

2. basic structural elements and loads it undergoes.

3. climatic factors imposing pressures on builtforms.

4. sizing of structural elements.

5. various types of structural systems.

6. relationship between span and structural systems.

7. forces present in structural systems.

8. stress-strain, Young's Modulus, bending moment, elastic limit.

9. various load conditions affecting in various types of foundations.

Quick comparison between wood at different stages of me working with it. The poplar (Right) is a board I haven't touched since buying. The red oak (Centre) i just chopped to a slightly longer size than needed before facing. The walnut (Left) is faced on all sides and is ready to be glued with other pieces on my next project. Underneath it all is a new benchtop made of poplar for myself.
