What are the best leather brands? | Review
What are the best leather brands? Leather is one of the most important and widely used materials in the clothing modeling and design industry. Since the value and price of leather is increasing day by day, it can be expected that the price of natural and original products will also increase in particular. As a result, many fraudsters design and sell similar products such as leather jackets, original wallets, etc., but they sell these items with low quality and average prices. For this reason, it is recommended that you buy luxury goods whose quality is the first word from reputable brands so that you can use your desired product for many years with more confidence.
In the following, we introduce and review the best leather brands in Iran and the world:
Versace leather
Besides being in the list of the best leather brands, Versace is very popular among people. Maybe the reason is the story behind its logo. The Versace logo is part of the icon and head of "Medusa". Medusa was one of the Greek myths, a beautiful girl whose stunning beauty caused anyone who looked at her to be turned to stone and nailed in place. This story is not unrelated to the Versace brand. Versace leather products have special color codes. The high use of Verni style in its various products, such as Versace women's leather wallets and men's leather wallets , is very close to the Italian people's own taste, and this issue has created a dazzling brilliance for its fans all over the world.
Tumblr media
Mashhad leather
Mashhad leather is a brand like Mashhad carpet, which originated from Headling Mashhad and has now become one of the most powerful and best leather brands in Iran. The idea of establishing this brand originated from an internal trip by Engineer Hamidi, the founder of Mashhad Leather, to a leather workshop whose production line had been stopped for many years. In those years when the quality of Iranian leather was hidden from the public, Mashhad leather entered this field and quickly attracted its fans.
Today, Mashhad Leather continues to operate as a reputable company and brand in the leather industry, with the difference that this brand focuses on after-sales services and its customer club.
weone leather
We One Leather , this Iranian brand that has been on the list of the best leather brands in Iran for 15 years. The difference between this brand and other popular brands in Iran is production and supply without intermediaries. By producing all products in its unique production line, V One has become one of the top brands of natural leather products, first in Mashhad and then throughout Iran. Despite its new age in the production of leather bags and shoes, this brand designs a variety of leather accessories and leather clothing and jackets , which is unparalleled due to its unique and specialized design. In addition to the quality of its language, this brand has a very extensive after-sales service, which makes it different from other more famous brands.
Darsa leather
Tumblr media
Fendi leather
Tumblr media
Leathersmith
Charmnegar is among the best Iranian leather brands because it is more than just a quality brand. Charmnegar is an example of an original Iranian brand that transforms its product from a simple women's leather bag into a special and original leather bag with engravings of Iranian poems and motifs and Slimi designs . Of course, leather engraving style may not be used by everyone. But the beauty and the idea of producing this particular style among leather brands is of interest to many people.
Berber leather
Burberry in the clothing industry refers to a special type of fabric style that has parallel lines on top of each other and is like a checkerboard. But this idea became global from the Berber brand itself. In fact, Thomas Berberi was a 21-year-old young man who decided to implement his idea after many years. This brand is one of the most important and best leather brands in Britain, which has its own fans. The cold British winters made it difficult for Shaal people to work. The idea of producing fabric and thick clothes was only one of the 100 Berber techniques that he implemented in his designs. Gabardine fabric was the first thick and resistant fabric whose wool fibers and its dense texture had a very good resistance against cold. Today, gabardines are widely used in suits, but their percentage of polyester is much higher than the gabardines of the time.
Of course, Burberry is a fluctuating brand that has tried its luck in various fields and has been successful in this field partly due to having smart and prominent CEOs.

Burberry FW23
From Sarah Mower's review for Vogue
“I think that the brand is about functionality,” Lee said. He played with that idea, focusing much more on the core of youthful, bias-checked, easy-to-sling-on utilitarian outerwear than Riccardo Tisci had done in the past few years. His men’s plaid trousers, with their horizontal zippered pockets, echoed the shape of technical hiking gear; women’s kilts had the casual air of wrapped-around picnic blankets.

The Best of Burberry London perfumes
Burberry is the brand that’s caught our eye the most in recent years. The British luxury brand has been in business for nearly 500 years, and it continues to grow. In fact, Burberry is so big that its flagship store is the world’s first department store filled with Burberry goods. The company’s fragrances have been around for hundreds of years, so it makes sense that they would have a solid collection of classics to suit every occasion. From warm-weather adventures to formal getaways, here are our favorite Burberry London perfumes.
Tumblr media
1. Burberry London Sunset Orchid #2
Although it doesn’t have the most popular name, the Sunset Orchid is definitely one of the most nostalgic scents in the collection. While it may not have the widespread popularity that some of the other perfumes in the collection does, the Sunset Orchid is still a great choice for vintage lovers. It is more than capable of creating a nostalgic transport back to the 18th century, complete with the jasmine, sandalwood, musk, and musk-like notes that make up the vintage scent. While this is a classic sample from the collection, we think you would actually love it if you were wearing it today.
2. Burberry London Evening with a Showy Topworked Peacoat
During the 1920s and 1930s, Burberry was a household name for fashionable women and fashionable men alike. The company was known for its luxe products and luxurious living, but it also had a fun sense of humor, as well as a fun way of advertising its products. The late-night London advertising campaign for Burberry’s first perfume, the Evening with a Showy Topworked Peacoat, is still one of the company’s most famous slogans. While the perfume market has definitely seen more competition in the past few years, the peacoat is still a classic Burberry item.
3. Burberry London Midnight with a Colognois Body
1940 was a significant year for the colognois department in France, as the country entered into its Industrial Revolution. Colognois is a type of wax, similar to creme that decorates the bodies of men and women both old and young. It is often used to give warmth and comfort, and many believe that it is the reason why humans have such large, strong bones. While the Midnight with a Colognois Body fragrance was released several months after the first perfume in the collection, it still ranks as one of the most popular fragrances in the store. Also, it is one of the most popular Burberry London scents.
4. Burberry London Afternoon With an Envy of Shifting Seasons
This is the second Burberry perfume that we have reviewed, and it is another classic sample from the collection. The Afternoon with a Shifting Seasons is a light, drizzling day perfume that was released in summer of 1949. It is still a popular Burberry London fragrance today, and you might even mistake it for being a more formal piece of clothing.
Conclusion
The sweet smell of a classic scented from a long line of luxury brands is what makes a Burberry perfume so special. It is easy to mistake for a more expensive product, but the quality of the Burberry London products is excellent, and the price is justified. Whether you are a seasoned vintage fan or a newbie, the Burberry London collection is a must have, no matter what season you are in.

☁️ Perfume Review: Cloud by Ariana Grande, an Unexpected Like-- And a Little Trademark Controversy??
Let me preface this review with two facts, or rather, what I believed to be facts about myself: 1) I believed I disliked sweet or gourmand fragrances and 2) I believed I would never own designer fragrances/ celebrity fragrances.
Part 1: The First Sniff
Well, time to eat my words! A few days ago on Saturday, I went to Ulta to shop for a birthday gift-- we were meeting my niece in a few hours, and she’d asked for Mario Badescu facial spray on her B-Day list. On my way to the sprays, I stopped by the fragrance section as I always do, and just happened to see a cute, albeit childish looking blue bottle. “Cloud by Ariana Grande”, read the instagram-worthy display. I thought “Why not?” and decided to try it. I’d heard that her fragrances were pretty good, but hadn’t had a chance to try it for myself until now. It smelled quite sweet, and I set it back thinking “eh, not for me”. Fast forward a few hours later, and I found myself sniffing everything-- my mask, my jacket, my arm, my reciepts, even-- to find out where that gorgeous scent was coming from! Could it be Jo Malone’s Scarlet Poppy, which I’d sampled after a customer returned it at work? Or perhaps it was the small, crumpled tester paper that I’d sprayed Versace Crystal Noir on earlier? It couldn’t possibly be the cartoon-ish, creamy sweet Cloud, by Ariana Grande, could it??
I wasn’t sure until tonight when I stopped by Ross: Dress for Less after work. I’ve found quite a few favorites in my adventures at Ross: Dress for Less, including my oft used Burberry for Women, so I never skip the fragrance section there (or at TJ Maxx for that matter...) Tonight, I found a few possible goodies that I ultimately left behind-- a Versace Eros body mist and lotion set, Calvin Klein The One, and even Coach! But when my eyes fell on the holographic blue and pink box that boasted a picture of Ariana Grande in all her skin-stretching, heaven-high ponytail-wearing glory, I thought simply “Perhaps...”.
Reader, I bought it. And at a pretty good price point of $25 bucks, after tax. Could this ultra-cheap, almost garish looking perfume bottle hold the scent I was lusting after?
The answer, surprisingly, is yes!
Part 2: Review!
It smells exactly how I remember. Basenotes.com lists Cloud’s notes as: Lavender, Pear, Bergamot Top Notes, Coconut Cream, Praline and Vanilla Orchid Heart Notes, and Musk and Woods as the Base notes. On first spray, Cloud is brightly sweet and creamy. I don’t really smell coconut or praline by itself, but I do smell Lavender and Vanilla, fruity-fresh Pear, and musk and woods, in that order.  I would almost say there’s Tonka in there, because it’s not a sickly sweet, foody vanilla, but rather a soft creaminess.
The dry down happens quick-- The sweet, fruity and floral notes settle down like a falling mist, and the base of woods and musk rise to the top, making Cloud smell warmer. I would liken it to Axe body spray, but it’s tamed by the top notes, whose sweet and fresh veil manage to keep memories of high school boys over spraying Axe after gym class at bay. Instead, it’s a sexy, feminine masculine vibe-- perhaps, what everyone wishes Axe really was. There’s also the fragrance equivalent of what I’d call an ‘aftertaste’ that lingers at the top of the sinuses when sniffing: the smell of salt, rich and almost choking, of the salt -soaked air between tongue and palate when ocean water from an errant wave manages to get the better of you at the beach. It’s barely there, a memory really, but it adds that addictive quality that hooked me in the beginning.
I’ve heard that Cloud is a dupe of Baccarat Rouge 540, and at a difference of about $170, I’d say that’s pretty good for a dupe!
Speaking of memories (I say, glancing punnily at my bottle of Gucci’s Memoir D’une Odeur), why does the name “Baccarat” seem so familiar??
Oh, I remember!
Wait...
Part Tres: Baccarat and Black Baccara, or, When Mainstream Bullies Indie
I follow a lot of indie perfumers on instagram: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Slumberhouse come to mind, but I also follow a house by the name of Black Baccara Perfumes. While writing this review, a chord struck in my memory banks; wasn’t Black Baccara being sued or something by Baccarat?
Well, not exactly. Baccarat, the crystal company, sent a cease and desist letter to Kalliope Amorphus, the owner of Black Baccara Perfume, when they filed for a trademark, on the basis that people might confuse Black Baccara Perfume with Baccarat. Though Baccarat is and has always been a crystal manufacturing company, the fragrance Baccarat Rouge 540 was created for their 250th birthday by Maison Francis Kurkdijian, and it was recently relaunched under his line. The cease and desist appears to have nothing to do with the perfume, but rather, that the names ‘Black Baccara’ and ‘Baccarat’ themselves are apparently too similar. That’s right folks-- it’s another Big, Rich company bullying a small creator over something that makes no sense!
There is, of course, no ethical consumption under capitalism. And though it seems that Baccarat no longer profits from sales of the perfume (Baccarat Rouge 540 is listed as being a part of Kurkdijian’s line, not Baccarat’s on Wikipedia), one can never be sure. Though I did some digging, I could not find a straight forward answer to the question via my best google efforts.
Kalliope currently has a go-fund me you can donate to to help fund their legal efforts against Baccarat.
I don’t know if it’s ethically better to purchase Cloud in lieu of Baccarat Rouge 540, but it’s certainly better for my wallet. And since I haven’t smelled the latter, my nose can’t tell the difference. I like Cloud because it’s a mix of sweet/axe/salty that is plain good and addictive. Plus the little cloud-shaped stand it comes with looks pretty darn cute on my perfume tray.

your post abt girls who wear mens cologne... do you have any other recommendations for cologne bc thats the kind of energy i need to have but idk where to start
ok, just a quick note before we start: i personally am not a big fan of overly fresh, aftershave-y men fragrances on myself, which is why this list focuses on fougère perfumes. a couple of perfumes on this list are unisex, i hope you don’t mind.
all links lead to fragrantica.com, you can see all the notes of each perfume there and if you scroll a bit, you can read reviews! each entry is arranged like this: name of the perfume / its main accords.
oh and as a tip, since you’ve mentioned that wearing men’s perfumes is unusual for you: apply pretty much all of them in smaller doses than you would most women’s fragrances.
and a last note (directed at you as well as anyone who reads this and may want to explore new perfumes) here’s a resource on anything perfume-related i find very useful (it’s a pretty extensive list of frequently asked questions on perfume).
so here we go!

FIC: Tis The Damn Season IV
The crowds that moved steadily through the glamourous and well-known department store parted like the sea before her, the sound of her sparkling heels clicking on the tile floor bouncing around the somehow perfectly filled space, the determined and confident sound of a seasoned shopper and her entourage behind her as the path cleared before her. The Madison Avenue department store was the perfect little treat after such a perfect start to the day, or at least it was in Shada's mind.
"Brother knows nothing," she chirped over her shoulder as she led the pair of gawking blondes behind her past the decorative fountain filled with crystal balls hung from the tall ceilings in a mimic of water and up the marble tiles stairs before her. Shada glanced behind her as she had to tug each of the other women's hands to get them moving rather than looking at the glistening splendour around them. "He would freak at the idea we've just popped over here for a spot of shopping, he's so worried all the time that he doesn't have enough fun with what he can do."
Jo made a noise that Shada didn't like the sound of, somewhere between disapproval and agreement in equal measure, that got a perfectly groomed brow risen in response to it as the brunette looked over her shoulder at the pair behind her.
“You disagree, cupcake?” “...Yes.” “So he doesn’t think that we shouldn’t use powers for fun?” “I… Didn’t say that.” “That’s what I thought.”
Shada smirked to herself as she turned back to the path she was leading through past the counters of perfume and make-up that they could go through on their way out, and instead to the elegant double rows of circling stairs that lead up through the centre of the building to each floor. She loved looking up at the sparkling chandelier that dripped down through the centre and sent rainbows of refracted light dancing about the space. It was so beautiful, and she loved being at the centre of such a beautiful thing.
“Where are we going first, big sister?” Ombre asked quietly, her voice softer than if they were somewhere the blonde was familiar with. It was almost as quiet as their natural voices would be, and Shada paused at the base of the stairs to reach out and squeeze her little sister’s hand. The younger shadow was still clearly uncomfortable in such busy and clearly human spaces, but they’d work on that until she was as into the whole experience as Shada was herself. Ombre’s eyes were big, wide and blue looking up into the sparkling light and taking in just how many floors the stairs spiraled up through. “Oh it’s so big!”
“It has to be big, Ombre, cause there are so many designers!” Shada couldn’t help the high pitch of excitement that ran through her words, and blushed slightly at the bemused look she could see coming from the other blonde at her clear enjoyment. “We’re going up a few floors now, and maybe we’ll have lunch on the sixth floor for big si- for Jo, and we can go to the salon on the top floor too?”
“I am so going to have to use one of my other cards for this, aren’t I?” The resigned but amused grin on Jo’s lips made Shada feel better about her slip and the casual informality of her plans for the day, before she laughed along with both other blondes as they all started up the stairs.
Shada gestured them off as they reached the third floor and let out a giggle as she spotted so many beautiful things all around. There was anything and everything gorgeous all around them - the women’s designer department was just like a candy store for her. And seemingly for her younger sister, as the youngest let out an extremely high pitched noise and ran straight towards a display of soft pastel pinks in lace, tulle and silk that displayed three very beautiful dresses; ranging from a sun dress with ruffles but nothing too extravagant, to a full on ball gown all tiered together. Shada smiled before grinning wider when she found her hand being grabbed by the other blonde and tugging her towards their little sister who was staring in wonder. This was exactly how the day should go.
As a store clerk came towards the trio, Shada smirked widely and declared to the snooty looking woman who was looking at the group in confusion. She could hear the woman’s thoughts easily - wondering at the odd assortment the three of them made. Shada herself was clearly dressed and suited to the occasion in her elegant Prada dress from that very season and the very obviously Burberry fitted black coat she had on all the way down to her pop of colorful sparkly red-bottomed shoes. The store clerk could see in her exactly the kind of shopped the woman would love to follow around as personal-shopper and the commission it would come with. Though the clerk was clearly thinking that she could making a killing off of Shada, the uncertain glances that took in the two blondes - one in a frilly, lacey and ruffled skirt and white lacey top paired and exaggerated by the layers of petticoats beneath, the bows tied around both her pigtail-plaits and the white tights and Mary Janes; the other in a pair of sturdy black cowboy boots that had clearly been worn in with her dark wash jeans tucked in, with a black t-shirt that looked quite a few sizes too large and swimming in a navy hoodie that definitely wasn’t from the women’s department and was clearly dressed for function and warmth over fashion. The three of them made a confusing contradiction for the lady, and Shada smirked even wider as she shifted her bag higher on her shoulder. Berkin bag, bingo! The woman’s thoughts were so easy to see run across her face as an indulgent look crossed her face.
“Ladies, welcome! How can I help you today?” The clerk’s voice was equal measures friendly and condescending - exactly the type of tone rich old ladies liked to hear so that they could put the ‘little upstart’ into her place before dropping thousands of dollars and enjoying making the assistant feel small, when really all they were doing was paying for her own shopping spree later. “Were we looking for anything in particular?”
“Oh no, we’re here for anything and everything.” Shada took over the interaction, her own voice sliding carefully into a snooty tone as she looked about the space. Glancing towards her sister, she smiled slightly to see how still enamoured the younger was staring at the sundress. “First off, we want that dress in a dressing room out back in my sister’s size. We’ll want three rooms together, I’m sure that will be easy to accommodate?”
“Of course! I’ll get that set up right for you while you ladies peruse. I’ll be right back.” The clerk quickly nodded, taking a quick glance at the still staring blonde before dashing away to get started - like candy from a baby! The thought was the last thing Shada bothered to pick up from her as she ran off through the racks of clothes.
Turning back to the two of them, Shada smiled shyly at Jo’s raised brow at her antics and tone, before moving to Ombre’s side. “Hey, they’re getting that dress out back for you to try on. Want to go see what else they have?”
The blonde pigtails bounced rapidly as Ombre smiled widely and nodded repeatedly, before she started wandering down the nearest aisle that had a very predominant pastel color theme to it.
“So… We’ll get her sorted with some first, then look for you?” Jo asked quietly coming up and threading her arm through Shada’s and tugging her to follow behind the bounding and excitable movements of the other.
Shada nodded, smiling widely as another clerk popped out of no where and started following the perky blonde around the few rows. “Yep! And then we look for you!”
“Me? Oh no, nothing here is my style.” “That’s a downright lie, cupcake-” “No no, I really don’t need anything.” “Where do you think I managed to find that dress last year? I’m sure we’ll find something for you too.”
The blush on the other’s face brought a bigger grin to her own face; before both their attention was pulled to where Ombre was holding up a sugarysweet looking strapless dress for their review. The pair equally exclaimed over the prettiness, and continued moving through the racks showing off a whole array of interesting designs and pieces for the other.
After a good half an hour and the two clerks running back and forth from them to the dressing room about ten times laddened with clothes, Shada couldn’t help but direct them towards the rows of black, grey, purple and shiny choices that suited her style more. And afterwards they slowly circled the full floor with a more eclectic array of clothes being pulled out and chosen by the final member of their group to try on. It was well into the late morning by the time the trio, full of giggles and exclamations and more than a few cups of coffee brought to them from the cafe a few stores up, were ushered back to the dressing room area to try on their various choices.
It was easier for them each to try on an outfit and emerge to gush over each other’s choices than for one girl to go through her selection at a time - and far more exciting, Shada found, to come out and hear gasps of happiness and praise of how lovely she looked while getting to do the same for her sister’s.
The first to exhaust her pile of clothes to try was Jo, but that was unsurprising. Shada had noted just how particular the other was as they’d moved through the racks that she was discerning and only let items she truly thought strongly about to be sent back to the dressing room. Shada had known less than half of what she’d picked out for herself would be something she genuinely wanted, where as Jo’d practically glowed with happiness and excitement over each outfit she’d tried on that radiated that happiness out to the other two in giddy waves. It was intoxicating to be near someone so honestly and innocently happy - over a pair of jeans that looked like they were poured on, or a black leather jacket with embroidery on the back, or a black lacey dress that revealed almost the entire back of the blonde when she’d spun about - and it definitely rubbed off.
Emerging from her change room in a sleek purple blouse and tight black pencil skirt with a grey supple leather jacket over the top that cut off right at her waist, Shada grinned widely at the look she got from the other woman sitting on the sette sipping her coffee. “Oh Shada, that looks so fabulous with those shoes!”
“Oh?” The brunette blinked in surprise, turning to look in the mirror and smiling to herself all over again as she noticed twisting here and there that her whole ensemble looked so well put together. “Oh! I am so wearing this out.”
“You aren’t goin’ to look at the tags?” “Why would I?”
There was a pause before the blonde let out a hearty laugh, shaking her head. “You’re right, your brother doesn’t have fun with his powers if this is what you mean.”
Shada flushed slightly pink before giggling at the wicked grin on the other’s face.
“Big sis, big sis’es!” Ombre chirped from behind her curtain before rushing out in a flurry of fluffy pink skirts to cuddle up against her older sister. “This is so pretty, isn’t it?”
“Yes, Ombre, very pretty!” “Absolutely gorgeous, Ombre.”
The perky blonde bounced a few times, before moving to talk about and energetically about how suitable and lovely Shada’s outfit looked together as well. Both shadows smiled widely at their other sister as Jo started gushing as well. And the gushing continued on from there - as each of the two shadows kept trying on their clothes over again until they’d finally exhausted all the luxurious outfits they’d put together. Shada emerged finally back in that pretty ensemble she’d put together, and Ombre wearing a new pastel blue top with her original skirt, while Jo got together their bags and looked concernedly at the pile of clothes both other’s had chosen as well as her small selection of items.
“Are we-”
“Ladies, can we please bag these up? We’re going for lunch and to get our nails done and want these packaged when we get back.” Shada cut over the other’s comments as the two sales clerks reappeared around the corner, her tone back into the same snooty, superior tone she had first off as the two women looked back and forth between one another. “My sister and I are wearing these choices - and our big sister will be taking that jacket with us now. That is all alright, correct?”
There was a moment before one of them ran over with a pair of scissors and snipped off gently the tags from Shada’s ensemble, Ombre’s top and also the black swing jacket Jo had fallen in love with and had had thrown over her lap as she waited. The other assistant quickly moved to pick up all the other chosen clothes and hang them up upon a cleared clothes rack to be properly packed and prepared for when they returned. There wasn’t even a moment’s hesitation or query for any kind of payment from either woman as the trio headed from the change room towards the spiral staircase and the blonde pair followed Shada up the next three flights to the cafe overlooking the busy spring streets outside.
Shada smiled widely as all three found themselves settling in and as they slowly made their choices for lunch and laughed together talking over the experience and promised to do more later. There was their nails in the salon one floor up to be done; and shoes and handbags; and all kinds of accessories; and an entire section of lacey intimates that Jo had sneakily pointed out on their way up to lunch. It was exactly the kind of day that she’d been craving for, and splitting a thin crust pizza covered in healthy vegetables with very little cheesy grease like any lesser pizza would and a bright spring salad, she couldn’t help but hope they’d get to enjoy many more like it in future.
Looking over the bright smiles on both her sisters’ faces as Jo teased Ombre over her confusion that asparagus wasn’t some kind of utensil poking out of the salad - she knew this would definitely happen again, and more regularly if she had her way. And Shada always got her way, after all.

the sunday times style magazine article below cut:
Even if you’re not one of the 139m people worldwide subscribed to Netflix, you will have heard of Stranger Things. The American sci-fi/horror/coming-of-age series, which was launched in July 2016, became the most-discussed TV show of the year and was impossible to ignore. Twitter hashtags went viral, and there were rave reviews, thinkpieces upon thinkpieces and celebrity fans from Reese Witherspoon to Barack Obama. It rebooted the career of its lead, Winona Ryder, and made overnight stars of its unknown cast members, including 22-year-old British actor Charlie Heaton, now 25. “When it launched, I was shooting a film in a tiny Spanish town where most people don’t speak English,” Heaton says. “In a day or two, my Instagram following went up by thousands. I was at a street market and some Spanish people came up and said, ‘Stranger Things!’ That’s when I knew it had blown up.”
The Stranger Things juggernaut is still going strong — the third series will start on July 4 — as is Heaton. He’s about to take up one of the lead roles in a highly anticipated X-Men horror spin-off, The New Mutants (out in August), has landed the title role in the BBC’s new version of The Elephant Man, and last month was at the Ferragamo show in Milan fashion week. As for that Instagram following? It’s now in the millions.
Heaton arrives on the set for this shoot — a pub in East London — bang on time, holding a pack of rolling tobacco and wearing Burberry trousers and a coat with the collar turned up. He shakes hands with everyone and asks if there’s time for a “quick smoke”. He is slightly restless — and will “nip out for a quick smoke” and to check his constantly beeping phone three more times before we break for lunch. So convincing is his American accent (which he maintains throughout filming), most people are surprised to learn that he’s from Bridlington in Yorkshire. “I tell people I’m from up north and that blows their mind,” he laughs. Disappointingly, the northern accent isn’t strong. “It gets stronger when I go home at Christmas,” he says. He’s still best friends with the lads he went to school with, some of whom “don’t even watch anything I’m in”. Do they make you get all the drinks in now? “Actually, a lot of them are like, ‘Let me buy you a drink, mate, I can still get you a drink.’ It’s a northern thing.” He smiles and lights another roll-up.
In Stranger Things, Heaton plays Jonathan Byers, older brother of Will Byers, the young boy who disappears in the first episode and kicks off the core storyline of the series. Jonathan’s on/off love interest, Nancy, is played by 22-year-old Nashville-born Natalia Dyer. In real life, the actors have been dating publicly for the past two years, but also dated for a while in secret before the rest of the cast found out.
“It’s nice to be with someone who is in the same world,” Heaton says. “We’ve gone through the same trajectory, so have got to share the ups and downs.” They’re about to move in together and are scouting apartments in New York’s East Village. “I’m very happy,” he smiles, willing the conversation on.
Part of the viral success of Stranger Things was down to its nostalgia-drenched fashion (the first series is set in 1983). The oversized glasses and pussy-bow blouses could have fallen straight off a Gucci campaign, and Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière was so inspired, he sent a Stranger Things T-shirt down the SS18 catwalk. Heaton, with his thin frame, messy hair and razor-sharp cheekbones, is made for designer mood boards.
Last May, he sat front row at the Dior cruise show. That said, “I never knew what a brand was growing up,” he tells me over a beer in the pub’s garden post-shoot. “I’d heard of Gucci and Chanel, but didn’t really know what their purpose was. Then, as you get introduced to them more, you realise their importance in the fashion world.”
On the topic of fashion: it was T-shirts that he and co-star Winona Ryder bonded over on set. “She gave me a T-shirt with the Clash on that she got when she went to see them years ago. Then I was reading The Catcher in the Rye and she told me it was her favourite book. She had made T-shirts based on Pencey Prep, the school [the book’s protagonist] Holden Caulfield went to, so she gave me one of those. She was like, ‘I designed it, I hope you like it!’ Of course I liked it. She’s the queen of cool T-shirts and the queen of cool.”
Heaton grew up with his mother, Michelle, and two older sisters (one of whom, Levi, is also an actress). They are incredibly close. “I think there’s a sensitivity that you have from growing up with three women that you maybe wouldn’t have if you grew up in a house of boys,” he says. His parents separated when he was two, but he remained close to his father. At 16, Heaton went to live with him in London. “That’s where I wanted to end up,” he says. “When I moved there, my uncle said [here he adopts a strong Yorkshire accent], ‘Do you like London, then?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s great. Do you think you’d ever leave Bridlington?’ He went, ‘Nah, I’ve got everything I need. I’ve got my house, my girlfriend and Sky Sports.’” Heaton chuckles. “The simplicity of it was great, but I’ve always been one for … excitement.”
Heaton’s first taste of acting was drama classes at school and local youth theatre aged eight to 15. He was also a drummer and, aged 16, he joined a noise rock band, Comanechi, that toured globally and supported Gossip. “I went to Japan, Canada and around Europe, living out of van for a couple of years, which was brilliant.” He got back into acting in adverts, as a way of making cash (one of which involved “congaing behind Kevin Bacon in an EE commercial”). A few small TV roles followed before he went to LA in 2015, found an agent and appeared in a horror film, Shut In, with Naomi Watts. “I’d never been to America, I didn’t have any money, so I stayed in youth hostels, basically backpacking for a month and auditioning,” he says. “By then I knew that all I wanted to do was act.” That same year, he got the part in Stranger Things.
In 2017, Heaton made headlines when he was denied entry into the US at LAX airport, reportedly because traces of cocaine were found in his luggage. After being detained, Heaton released a statement, saying that due to “an issue at US immigration”, he was unable to enter the country. I ask how he feels about the incident now, if there is anything he’d like to say about it. He shifts in his seat, clearly wishing to be anywhere else, then switches off my Dictaphone. He only wants to speak off the record about this. It seems he doesn’t know yet what he wants to say, he feels terrible about the whole thing and desperately wants to change the subject. “Can we talk about something else?” he asks.
We return to the safer territory of how life has changed since Stranger Things. “I still audition for stuff I don’t get,” he says; though one role he has just secured is Joseph Merrick, the 19th-century Englishman whose facial deformity led to him becoming known as the Elephant Man. The BBC project is still in development, but Heaton has already faced criticism from the disability charity Scope and some actors, who say the role should have gone to a disabled actor. “I can see their point,” says Heaton. “I think there has to be some balance. There are roles in both episodes that will include disabled actors with that specific disability. But, disabled or not, you would hope that the right person for the role gets it and that’s based on a whole range of things. I don’t make those decisions.”
The pub’s garden is busying and the landlady is waiting impatiently for a picture with Heaton. He’s due to meet some mates at another pub before heading back to his dad’s place, where he stays when he’s in town. Then what? “I’m looking for something different,” he replies. “I’ve played a lot of outsiders.” Maybe it’s time for a comedy? “Yeah, but I’m not funny! I just want to keep acting, keep casting the net wide.” The boy from Bridlington as Hollywood’s Next Big Thing? Stranger things have happened.
