@erinwills22 is an enormous blessing to me. She's also an enormous blessing to our clients. ~ Here are the two of us (second/third from left) volunteering with @goreparkoutreach this past Saturday. It's an amazing organization that each week, gives out hundreds of hot meals, operates a food bank with everything you can think of including fresh fruit and vegetables, and @being_margaret tells me this week there was even a barber, cutting hair and giving straight razor shaves in the park. It was just the most heartwarming thing seeing so many people come together to ensure those struggling to survive in this ruthless economy (housed or not) are treated with dignity, love and a smile. ~ Erin doesn't work *for* me. She works *with* me. She is a teammate in everything we do, including immediately raising her hand to help with work like we did shoulder to shoulder together in Gore Park Saturday. ~ If you need us, rest assured she cares for, and about each of our clients. This? We’ve all heard of the term “black box” in relation to airplane crashes, but did you know that most cars also have black boxes? Although they share the same name, a vehicle’s black box is not the same as an aircraft’s black box. In a commercial aircraft, the black box is actually comprised of two separate devices, the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which often combine to form a single unit. In a car, black boxes are called EDR’s – or electronic data recorders. EDR’s have been voluntarily installed by many vehicle manufacturers since 2002, however, the specifics of the data recorded (amount and type of data) vary depending on the manufacturer. The photos is of @quinn_lalande – and at 7 years old she is one of Canada’s youngest female skateboarders who hopes to compete in 2022. Needless to say - Quinn has an enormous passion for skateboarding and has already inspired young girls in her community to try something different and pick up a skateboard! Quinn practices at @cjsskatepark in Toronto. Cj’s is a not-for-profit indoor skateboard facility dedicated to engaging and empowering children in the community, including at-risk youth and those with special needs. It’s president, Jay Mandarino is a major philanthropist who has been giving back to the community for over 30 years. He mentions that Through skateboarding — a sport that’s largely non-competitive, suitable for all age and ability levels and relatively cheap to participate in, equipment-wise — C.J. Skateboard Park and School aims to imbue its athletes with confidence, self-esteem, camaraderie and, in some cases, a rare but precious sense of normalcy, of simply being just a kid rather than a kid coping with cancer, ADHD, Autism or another disorder or disability. Jay says: “I am on the board of the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario and I can tell you kids are under so much pressure these days. They have two sets of parents, everyone’s working harder than ever before and kids are struggling with stress. Traumatic brain damage occurs because the victim receives a blow to the head that whips the head forward and back or from side to side (as in a car crash), causing the brain to collide at high velocity with the bony skull in which it is housed. This jarring bruises brain tissue and tears blood vessels, particularly where the inside surface of the skull is rough and uneven; damage occurs at (and sometimes opposite) the point of impact. Thus, specific areas of the brain - most often the frontal and temporal lobes - are damaged. This focal damage often can be detected through MRI and CAT scans. Some mild TBI and concussion symptoms may appear right away, while others may not appear for hours or days after the injury. Symptoms generally improve over time, and most people with a mild TBI or concussion feel better within a couple of weeks. Some people - unfortunately do not go on to recover as well as others and go on to suffer lifelong debilitating cognitive issues.
