I need to take a work trip to Germany, Leipzig to be precise. Should be a nice change from my NYC life.
I guess, your suitcase won't make it to Frankfurt... Then I guess I have to organize a replacement. Damn Airlines!
The only thing I can offer you so spontaneously is an old army backpack from GDR stocks, covered with graffiti tags, stickers and patches. Pretty heavy... And maybe not necessarily suitable for your classic suit… So, take your rucksckand head to the airport train station. Your train to Leipzig will depart in 20 minutes.
Shit, Frankfurt airport is bigger then expected. When you arrive, you thaught, that you missed your train. But luckily, the train is delayed by 15 minutes. Enough time, to relaxe. And for a smoke. You search the side pockets of the backpack. No cigarettes. But tobacco, cigarette paper. And weed. Shit, that could have ended badly at customs...
Ahh, smoking this feels great. I really needed to decompress a bit after this whole travel shitshow. Don't take offense, but a middelaged man in a conservative suit and a classic haircut smoking weed with an army backpack on the platform of the airport station looks a bit special... You have to admit that, too, when you see your reflection in the window panes of the high-speed train rushing in.
No one had told you that you had better have made a seat reservation. The train is packed. Getting a seat is out of the question. With a little luck, you will still get a seat in the dining car. You order a beer (what else in Germany) and check the contents of your backpack. On top of it lies a hat. It looks funny, you put it on. Otherwise, the backpack is not necessarily neatly packed. Everything is stuffed in more like this. There's a MacBook... You open it. And of course you know the password. Feels perfectly normal to open it. As normal as your pierced earlobes feel.
Tumblr media
It is a low-coding platform open to any Big Data AI application. You scroll through the application. Sure, the prototype of an app for digitizing queues in doctors' offices. You open the library of useer stories and start developing the app further. A few hours ago, you had no idea about software development.
It's 9:00 p.m. when you look out the window. Gotha train station. Wherever that may be. You are looking at your reflection. Let's see what the others think of the fact that you have let the beard grow out...
The train is half empty by now. You have not even noticed how it has emptied. It's still a good hour to Leipzig. You close the computer. That's it for today. You order another beer and the vegan curry. Actually, you're also in desperate need of a joint. But of course you can't smoke anywhere on this train.
But you take tobacco, weed, cigarette paper and your cigarette case, which you inherited from your grandfather. And while you're waiting for the food, you roll a few joints on reserve. It will be after 11:00 p.m. by the time you arrive at your shared apartment. But you assume that you will sit together until 01:00 or 02:00. Your roommates are all rather night owls....
You don't notice that you're wearing high-laced DocMarten's boots instead of welted penny loafers as you step off the train. You also don't notice that your hair has grown considerably longer and falls tousled under your hat into your forehead... You pause for a moment as you see the tattoos on the back of your hand as you light up a joint to tide you over until the bus leaves. And after asking the bus driver for a ticket to Connewitz, you wonder if you actually just spoke German with quite an American accent.
The elevator in your house is of course defective again. Old building from 1873, last renovated in 1980 or so. That was long before the fall of the Wall in the GDR. But the rent is cheap. And the atmosphere is energetic and creative. When you met Kevin, Lukas and Emma at university five years ago, you were immediately on the same wavelength. Even though you didn't speak a word of German back then. You would never have thought that a semester as an exchange student would turn into a lasting collaboration. The fact that you found an apartment together where you could work on your startup at the same time was a real stroke of luck.
Upstairs in the apartment, Kevin already opens the door for you. As if he had been waiting for you.
„Sieht heute gut aus”, you say with your strange American accent.
Kevin hugs you and answers „Dude, it's good to have you back! We have missed you! Tell me, do you have new tattoos? Looks hot! And did you bring weed from Amsterdam? Our dealer is on vacation... Shitty situation!“
“Of course, i’d never leave you without”, I say, opening up the cigarette case and offering you one of the hand-rolled contents.
Kevin grins. „What do you say we smoke the first one not at the kitchen table but on your bed? I missed you, stud!“
“I’m so tired after this trip, so the bed sounds just right.”
There is nothing left of your suit right now. Yes, you are still from NYC. But you weren't a lawyer then. You studied computer science. And that was a long time ago. Now you are a Leipziger by heart
You both lie on the bed. You take a deep drag. And blow the smoke into Kevin’s mouth with a deep French kiss. The bulge in your skinny jeans looks painful. “Oh man, Kevin, I need some relief!” you growl.
It doesn't take long and we both have the tank tops off. You discover Kevins new nipple piercings. And can't stop playing with them. And Kevins bulge starts to hurt too.
“Man, let me provide some relief”, he says. And open your jeans. Your boner jumps out of your boxers like a jack-in-the-box.
Those new piercings… You just can’t help yourself… You’ve gotta feel them in my mouth! “Are they sensitive? Does it still hurt?” Kevin starts breathing more heavily. “What are you waiting for you prude Yank! They've been waiting for you for two weeks now!” You take a deep drag and blow the smoke over Kevins chest, which you caress with your tongue. Kevin moans “Fuck! You're doing so well! Sure it hurts. It's supposed to. You make me so fucking horny with your tongue! I love your tunnels on the earlobes!. I can not stop playing with them with my tongue.”
Dude, your dick is producing precum like a broken faucet. Kevin starts to massage it into your dick! You take one last drag from the joint, push the butt into the ashtray and blow the smoke over Kevins boner.
While Kevin rubs your hard dick, You begin licking his uncut cock. Damn man, these uncut European cocks will never not surprise you! Oh man, you love how it feels on your tongue.
Kevin doesn't stop breathing heavily, but still has to grin. “Fuck, admit it, you certainly didn't just talk about user interfaces with Milan and Sem in Amsterdam. You did practice your tongue game. Fuck, you know how to bring someone to ecstasy with the tip of your tongue!”
Oh man, Kevins precum just takes so good. You can’t get enough of it. Kevin reads your thoughts. “I want to lick your precum too. Let's make a 69! I need to suck your powerful circumcised cock.”
Yes, please!, you think in ecstasy. You just love how his balls feel in my mouth. And Kevin has fun to. You must have been sweating like a dog on the trip. Your balls are salty, your cock is deliciously cheesy. “Fuck, I can not tell you how I missed you.” Kevin moans.
He always feels so good, just keep going please, you think. His cock is so hard. His precum is spectacular. It’s like you’re in sync — in and out, in and out, in and out. “Fuck, your balls are so huge”, Kevin grunts. “I didn't jerk off all the time you ve been away. My balls are bursting”.
You both are perfectly synchron. Like one organism. “Please cum at the exact moment that I also cum. I want to make this old house shake.”, you think. You can’t wait to make you explode. Kevins moans “I can't take it much longer. Fuck, you are a master with your tongue. Fuck... Oh yeah... Yes! Fuuuuuuuck!”
Oh god! That was heavy. You both really try. But that was too much. Boy, what a load you both shot! Kevins cum is so thick! So potent! You ’ve got my whole mouth full, not able to swallow everything at once. You both exchange a deep French kiss. The cum runs from the corners of your mouths down our cheeks and necks. Kevin licks the cum traces from your skin. And you his. One last kiss, you pull up our pants again. And go to the kitchen with a joint. Lukas and Emma grin. The whole house could listen to you having sex.
Tumblr media
“Incredible, as always, Kevin” You tell him, as you pass him the joint. And as if nothing had happened, you ask Emma if she has any new user stories for your app.

Ko-Fi prompt from KemiKitty:
id enjoy hearing about concerts and ticket money if you want
Referencing my “how does this make money/how does this lose money” in this post.
Whoo! I actually really enjoy talking about money flow like this. Digging into examples like this helps with understanding the interconnectedness of the economic systems we inhabit, and with why things cost What They Do.
Disclaimer: I have not worked in this industry. I just majored in business, watch a lot of documentaries/video essays, and like to break down business and economic topics. When I got to performances, I try to figure these things out as an observer (dinner theater from watching Lindsey Sterling before she got super famous, more Traditional concerts at Staller Performing Arts center, Broadway shows) and asking questions of tour guides when at places like the Vienna Opera House.
Our Example: A moderately popular performer, in an enclosed performance space with a stage, fixed seating, and food service.
Let us consider a performer of middling popularity. They go on tours, but only in the lower 48 states, not yet internationally. They do single nights at an independent venue, which has either dinner tables or rows of audience seating. Let's say... 350 seats, in a middle-sized city, with $30/ticket on average, with wiggle room depending on seating, VIP passes, and discounts (groupons, senior, military, annual passes, etc).
So, who is getting paid, and who is paying?
Money coming into the venue, tied directly to this one event:
Tickets The people who came to this concert are paying for the tickets. 350 seats, at an average of $30/ticket, that's about $10,500. Most of this money does not go to the venue, but may pass through it, or leave a cut with it. (Depends on the ticketing software; we're saying this is an independent venue, not part of the ticketmaster situation, so it's a maybe.)
Food and drink The venue sells snacks, possibly full meals, if it's a dinner-and-show location. It may sell alcohol. It almost definitely sells drinks, maybe has vending machines if nothing else. If attendees cannot bring their own food and drink, and don't want to leave the building so they don't miss the show, then the venue can mark up the food they sell.
Merchandise Dependent on the type of merch and the venue, this may be a flat fee, where the performer puts down a few hundred dollars up front to set up a table for after the concert, or it might be taking a small cut of whatever is sold that night. They might not charge anything, but we'll include it as a likely avenue of income. I can see some kinder venues waiving the fee for newer, up-and-coming artists, but generally you can assume that the venue will take a cut.
Money flowing out of the venue, tied directly to this one event:
The Performer and their team The ticket costs will go primarily to the performer, their backup dancers/singers/band, their manager, and whatever fund they have for things other than wages, like a tour bus rental fee, the label, the driver, the night's post-concert laundry costs, and so on. The chances of all that money going to a single performer is very low; you can generally assume they have backup, management, additional costs, and someone pulling the strings. There are exceptions, like unaffiliated stand-up comedians or other, genuinely solo acts, but for the type of event I'm outlining, these are all contributing factors. Performers may bring their own lighting/sound techs. The venue also might provide their own. For a larger venue, I'd assume both are involved; one who knows the concert's program, and one who knows the venue's setup.
Venue staff The ushers, lighting/sound technicians, the bar staff, the cook, the janitor, security, and anyone else who is working night-of is getting paid. We can equate their pay to the money coming in from specifically the food and drink sales, along with tips for the waitstaff in particular. By this, I mean that the correlation is such that, should sales fall, the corresponding cut in costs is employee labor (the bar staff and cooks), rather than the performers (whose costs are calculated in relation to the money they bring in relating to the ticket sales).
Food and Drink Raw ingredients for the food, wholesale costs for the liquor, napkins, single-use straws, and so on.
Printed Programs Someone has to print the little booklet that tells you who's performing tonight, who's performing for the next few months, and anything else you need to know. If it's a big-name cultural center, they may even include some interviews! But ink is expensive, and that's a lot of paper.
Money coming into the venue, not connected to the specific event:
Advertising Does the venue have posters around for local businesses? For insurance companies? For upcoming events? Someone is paying them for that. Does the venue intersperse the pre-show music over the speakers with the occasional ad spot? Someone is paying them for that. Does the venue have ads in the program booklet? Someone is paying them for that. For a really, really large venue, the kind with dozens or hundreds of employees and massive lighting/sound setups, they are liable to get most of their income from advertising.
Government Grants and Private Donations Depending on the venue, they may donations or grants. This is more likely to apply to a university/community performing arts center than a for-profit dinner theater, but it's a possibility.
Merchandise The venue may have merch that is unrelated to the performance of the night. A historic or novelty location is most likely to have success with this, selling beer glasses with their logo or a t-shirt with 'home of the [band from several decades ago]' printed across the front.
Money flowing out of the venue, not connected to the specific event:
Administrative/Overhead Employees Management, bookkeeping, legal, marketing, and so on.
Utilities Electricity, water, sewage, gas, telecomm, and so on.
Taxes, Licenses, Fees Sales tax, property tax, liquor license, etc.
Mortgage or lease The venue's business owner is not necessarily the one to own the property outright. They may pay rent to a property owner, or mortgage to the bank.
Maintenance - Building Codes Any large building is going to need plumbers, glass techs, electricians, roofers, and so on coming by with regularity. (This part, I actually do know; I used to do repairs dispatching, and you'd be amazed how frequently a big box store needs someone to come by about the toilets.)
Maintenance - Venue Codes There are certain things that an entertainment venue needs to do that other businesses... don't. Namely, fire safety. It's a huge deal. Staying up to code can be expensive, especially if you need to get your backstage/wing curtains chemically treated again, which can be anywhere from one to five years, or the next time someone spills water on it. (That's the main reason open containers of liquids aren't allowed backstage.)
Marketing Just like people pay the venue to advertise, the venue pays for others to advertise it. This could be in the local newspaper or online, but if a given performer isn't someone semi-famous on tour that has a following, then something else needs to draw in a regular paying crowd.
Miscellaneous Overhead There is a lot of overhead for any business of moderate size that has its costs spread out over the year. This includes hiring an accountant for tax season, purchasing uniforms for employees, replacing cutlery and plates and furniture as it wears out or gets lost, repainting the walls every few years, office supplies when the printer for the programs wears out, and so on.
Is this everything? Almost definitely not.
But, hopefully, I've untangled a few things that you may not have considered before.
Those tickets and drinks you bought cover a lot more than just the performer!
...unless it's through ticketmaster, in which case it's probably just the monopoly.

time is a monopoly : memory is a software
"moments later, i was all alone on a highway on pre-new year’s day thinking about what happened and hoping that that was one of those times we both lived in a state of self-regulating amnesia so that we can just forget."
Tumblr media
does anybody feel the growing urge to take a trip down memory lane when the new year's approaching? the sudden feeling of going over how you spent the past 365 days of your life? and having void when you sense that you haven’t really taken enough time to fathom your recent memories or at least, grow past them? then, in an instant, you’re taken aback by how far youre from moving on.
and does anybody ease the intensifying feeling by decluttering? by trying to fill the void in the act of both dumping and hoarding inanimate objects, may it be physical or digital? it can be old photos taken randomly in your memory card, expired negative film rolls you still used but didn’t bother to process, self-burned cds filled with illegally downloaded music and pirated films, hand-written letters from people you no longer talk to anymore, cake boards from your past birthdays, memorable and extremely tiring bus tickets, movie stubs from theaters you almost slept to, cringy high school slam book, and even failing grade school report cards.
i don’t know what got me into this high-functioning yet self-deprecating interest but truth be told, i’m a sentimental hoarder with ironic interest in decluttering. is it the self-reflecting facet? is it the fact that it brushes off the yearning? or is it because it reaffirms the need for a new start? i think it’s somewhere along those lines. i just know that there are times that i find comfort in decluttering anything lying around unused and projecting it as the better way to end the year—a restart to a clean slate.
the annual feeling clings to the overtly overused “new year, new me”, “new year, new beginning”, and “new year, new life” philosophy. surely, it’s about sentimentality but partly, it’s how it consoles the letting go and starts over the loop of life.
“you can't just throw out people the way you throw out things.”, protagonist jean says in nawapol thamrongrattanarit’s 2019 film, happy old year. it may come off as excessively dramatic but that’s how i ended 2021. not the usual decluttering, i was blunt and unfeeling as i throw out almost everything away, disregarding what they used to mean to me. i can reason that it’s because of the great isolation i was forced into that i began to pilot a general cleaning both literally and emotionally.
by the 1st of december last year, i was sorting every item that captured a moment in the past that hit pretty close to home. i knew my memory works as a self-defense mechanism, in its selectiveness, it archives my experiences that are most useful, regardless of them being good or bad that is why i made sure that i’d toss anything like it’s a done deal and that it will all be over if i throw things away already. but you know, sometimes, i feel like a lot of the things that i like to keep are from other people.
Tumblr media
by the end of the month of the same year, hours between the 30th and 31st of december, i found myself declaring my love to my college best friend. it wasn’t rushed but it seemed totally abrupt. i’ve been thinking of confessing for the longest time but it was the admission of feelings that would outright stain the friendship that held me back. some people hold some memories dearer than others sometimes. i'm just like that and he's that memory for me. he is knotted to specific places that belong to the past even when it’s already been demolished. he is knotted to a specific time that belongs to the past even when it already happened. a still vivid memory that i’d keep. an intangible place that i’d go to. an irreversible time that i’d relive.
it was a long time coming, i told him i had feelings for him but i’m only doing it to let go of what feels like one-sided baggage i had to carry for a long time already. i don’t spill my guts to anyone and in his case, i felt like i already made it clear through my actions—he was my first confession and hopefully not the last. i told him not to say something or even react, he tried but i could tell he was overwhelmed and i was too devoid of departure.
that night felt like the longest night ever and it felt like we weren’t moving from the time and space that witnessed my confession. as we approach the terminal to call it a night, i didn’t let him come along with me like before, instead, i insisted to walk him up first so he’ll be the first to leave. moments later, i was all alone on a highway on pre-new year’s day thinking about what happened and hoping that that was one of those times we both lived in a state of self-regulating amnesia so that we can just forget.
the impermanence of things that used to remind me of him lets me translate what it means to “forget”—and why it isn’t bad if i still can’t get better while i’m at it. still, it’s not just about the bittersweet revelation that not everyone, even the closest people, can truly yield an ending they want, even if i pretend that that’s the case. it’s also the struggle with decluttering of relationships that we stored together in the things we shared.
sometimes, some things make me realize that moving on by decluttering is more than just throwing away things. it also means confronting the ghosts that come with it. from time to time, the mindless dumping reminds me to rue the day. to remember that a lifetime’s worth of very cluttered memories stands in the way and it’s not always about bypassing the painful parts—sometimes, moving forward requires a lot of attention and absorption.
it’s impossible to go full marie kondo or be out of our minds and just declutter things that don't spark joy anymore—to hurl things away without the slightest sign of hesitation but i felt like i did it that night. on the way home, i felt the inconsiderable regret of actually throwing something out, the heartbreaking reflection of something that cannot be changed. i know our own need to exonerate ourselves from feelings, regardless of the consequences for the other person, can sometimes ultimately be selfish especially when it’s all of a sudden—i’ll admit, my confession to him wasn’t for our friendship, but for my own closure.
oftentimes, i forget people and moments because there’s barely a physical totem to hold on but when sentimentality takes over, it becomes hard for me to let anything go, the least i can do is to remind myself that memories don’t live in things, it’s within me. everything that happened in the past had been recorded somewhere in my head already. after throwing some things, i’m going to remember what i’ve put into the trash bag one way or another anyway.
happy new year, friends!

Why Time Management Is Crucial for Musicians
It is essential for musicians to manage their time effectively. By using time management, you can make the most out of every moment of your day. However, it's not as simple as it seems.
With the advent of easy-to-use end-to-end technology, there is a revolution in the way events are organized and prepared. Your Tempo provides four music business solutions to refine and support experts in the field. To free up more time for them to spend making music and sharing it with the world, they have always worked to make the processes for booking agents, tour management, talent-buying software, crew, and song publishers as simple as possible. The procedures of booking agencies, tour management, talent-buying software, crew, and music publishers have thus been streamlined.
One of the numerous advantages of contemporary software is the ability to use shortcuts, especially for repeated operations. It used to take days to complete specific activities and processes, but now it just takes a few hours. Music tour managers are among the many professions that may make use of these advantages. Specialized tour management software is now available to managers, increasing the overall operational effectiveness of their business. Here are just a few instances of how Tour Pro alters the landscape of music industry management software.
Ways Music Management Software Helps Musicians to Manage Time
Organizing
By locating all the important information for you and your team in one place, YourTempo's Tour Pro reduces the amount of time needed for manual organizational duties. The tour management software consolidates all calendars into one, eliminating the need for several, independent calendars. All authorized users have central access to this integrated calendar. Your crew can go over show times and notes information. The calendar allows you to attach papers, so everyone can get the information they need without asking for more paper copies or clarification. The same holds true for dress rehearsals, public appearances, bus calls, and other occasions.
As it includes the ability to incorporate vacation days, blacked-out days, and travel days, this calendar may also serve as a work schedule. You may quickly acquire a final count by taking a quick look at the calendar if you need to arrange how many staff members, you'll have available on a certain tour day. This removes the effort of getting in touch with each person, setting up times and dates, or scrambling at the last minute to get coverage because of staffing shortages or organizational issues. Your usage of the calendar will be more effective and clearer thanks to integrated options for color coding and sorting by event type for dates and events. Don't forget that you may add event-specific information to each crucial date on the calendar.
Streamlining Communication
Communication is crucial to the overall success of any tour management endeavor. This is valid for both large-scale and small-scale events; even a small number of people who are not on the same page can cause serious execution problems. Even when there are last-minute changes, Tour Pro makes it simple to make sure the correct people receive the right information. Each one of them has a separate area that is specifically for that purpose, and these sections have many of the same characteristics as day sheets. Printing, viewing as PDFs, emailing to your team, and adding notes are all options for your documents.
In order to further increase efficiency, you can even print the names of your guests directly onto envelopes and labels. Choosing who has access to guest lists, adding requests for automated approvals, and controlling who is permitted to request their own guest tickets are all things you may do as an administrator. When any of these events take place, you can even get alerts. Analysis, cost and revenue evaluations, and identifying potential development opportunities for the following quarter are all made simpler as a result.
Increases Efficiency
Tasks that frequently take too much time to do manually may be done more quickly using Tour Pro. The administrative side of things will take up less of your and your team's time. Instead, you may focus your efforts on creating a successful tour, which is what you do best. Your team's ability to collaborate will eventually increase if you stay organized and on top of communication. You'll spend less time on administrative tasks overall and run your business more efficiently.

What Is Travel API and How It Works?
Previously, if a travel company wanted to expand their business online, they had to go for software development services. And build the tech solution from scratch or buy it from another company.
Today, we have travel booking APIs. They fetch and process data collected by CRM systems and allow developers to connect to this data. It's a kind of a control panel for linking with software components without dealing with the code itself.
Companies license third-party software products through travel APIs. It is a more efficient and quicker way compared to building software components from scratch.
How exactly does travel API integration work?
Let's take our website example. It's not just a travel content website now but a platform that allows visitors to read reviews, check prices, and book services, all in one place.

London #2: The British Software Engineer
My first date with the London Nurse was not the best, considering I felt catfished and a little trapped in the situation. However, within the same week, my dating experience did a 180.
The day after my date with the London Nurse, I swiped some people on the Thursday Dating app. This was before I went to the event that I paid for (where I met the Swedish Yogi). I matched with a cute British Software Engineer who, by all definitions, was very British-looking. Not the posh kind, but the modern version. He immediately set up our date for the following day.
Date #1
I knew upon seeing him I really liked his vibe and style because he's well dressed and knows what works for him. He is similar to Jenn Im's ex-husband, regarding facial features and style. Definitely did not look like someone who would be a software engineer.
He took me to Bounce, a cool ping pong place with amazing music in Shoreditch, and paid for our entry. At first, I wasn't sure if we would connect right away. It's been a long time since I went on a date with a white man (the last one was around February 2022, so a long time ago and probably a year or two before the last white guy). He got me a cocktail and we started playing, which I immediately enjoyed. It was light and fun and once I drank my alcohol, I felt more at ease.
At one point we took a little break to sit down and get to know each other. We shared travel stories, favourite cuisines, and other general shallow conversations. If I were to describe his personality, it's quite chill and easygoing from the get-go. Someone you know would not cause any trouble and go along with things.
During our get-to-know-each-other, we noticed some guys about to take our ping pong table. The British Software Engineer kicked them off (I like it when I see a guy take charge) and we returned to play until our time was up.
Afterward, he took me to The Blues Kitchen, an amazing live music restaurant and bar. It was ticketed so he proceeded to pay for our entry here too.
Part of the restaurant was transformed into a dance floor after 10 PM. He got me two more cocktails at the bar and we started to get closer throughout the night while bopping to the live soul and funk music (which was fantastic).
Taking a break from the music, we went to their downstairs bar for some quiet time. I decided to cut myself off and just had water because I knew that if I drank anymore, I would make decisions based on my abbreviated state.
We chit-chatted at the downstairs bar a little before moving back to the main floor. By the time we got back up, the blues band took a break from performing so we grabbed a seat instead at the other end of the restaurant and away from the dancefloor.
While we sat together, he asked if he could kiss me. I agreed as I had been waiting for it all night and we started to make out. Not my favourite kind of making out because I felt like his kissing was really wide and I kept hitting his teeth and it was one of those wet makeouts. However, there was still chemistry there and I didn't mind it so much. If we needed to kiss again in the future, I would bring it up.
We eventually left and he got me a bit of food because I was hungry. I like that he knew he shouldn't leave me hungry, cause what gentleman would? We shared spinach puff pastries from a Middle Eastern restaurant still open around 2 AM in Shoreditch.
He walked me to the bus stop and I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek goodbye before I ran for my bus.
Overall, it was the absolute best date I had in years. It was light, fun, and full of physical chemistry which I needed.
Date #2
After the first date on Friday, he proceeded to ask me out again the following Tuesday. I happily agreed. I had three sublet viewings prior, but happy to have my evening free for him.
He took me to Mercato Metropolitano, a giant food court, similar to Chefs Hall in Toronto but nicer and with more options. We were indecisive about what we wanted to eat. We eventually settled on tacos because he seemed like he wanted them (despite telling me I could choose whatever, I was the real indecisive person between the two of us cause in British fashion, it seemed like he knew what he wanted but wanted to give me the option to choose).
After we had tacos (some of the best IMO), I told him I was thirsty for some non-alcoholic drinks. We walked around the court but I was indecisive. Since he had paid for everything thus far, I didn't want to assume he would continue paying (he did). Thus, I was more easygoing to see what he would do. Had he been assertive, I would have been more comfortable making firm decisions. He bought me gelato and churros from a gelato vendor when I eyed it during our walk-around while searching for a place to get a drink.
We eventually decided on drinks (alcohol after all LOL) when we found one bar that was having its happy hour. I went for a rum and coke and he got himself a beer before we made our way out to a private wooden swing near the front of the entrance. The swing space was secluded because it was blocked off on both sides to section off other tables left and right of us.
We sat beside each other on the swing, chitchatting about surface-level topics again. With his arm around my shoulders, we ended up making out (obviously), pausing in between when we heard people about to pass by in front of us.
With the night getting close to 10 PM, I knew I didn't want to go back to his place just yet. So when he asked what I wanted to do next, I said I would go home, especially since he had work the following day.
We made out again, before parting ways and I walked back to my place as it was nearby.
Date #3
Saturday of that same week, I was supposed to have a date with someone else, who I had been chatting to for about a week online. However, the day prior, he said we could meet another time since I was still busy trying to settle myself into London as a newcomer. I said I could still meet though if he'd like. When I mentioned this to my London friends, they all laughed and said he was making an excuse to get off the date in a British fashion.
Lo and behold, the day of he said he woke up sick. He apologized and said we could meet the following weekend. I said it was fine and was open to that if he'd like. I was none too fuss, but also absolutely did not care if we did not meet. It was already inconvenient enough as is. He wrote back he understood this might be a turnoff and that we could video call if I wanted to throughout the week! Again, I said it was fine and up to him if he wanted to do a video call!
Silence.
Guess he wasn't that interested after all, despite saying all that.
On Thursday, the British Software Engineer asked if I was free that Saturday but I told him I wasn't because of the above guy. He followed up the morning of to see if I was still not free. At this point, I had a feeling my date with the other guy had fallen through and gave it about half an hour before I responded.
I sensed cause the British Software Engineer asked me about Saturday twice, he most likely had the place to himself and this was likely the last evening he would have any chance of hooking up with me before his flatmate returned home.
I wasn't counting until then, but it would have been 3 dates in 8 days since our first date. Which was quite fast, but it didn't feel like it because I had been so busy every day. However, when he asked me again if I was still not free, I pieced together that potentially all he wanted to do was have a hookup considering how often we saw each other in a short period.
I messaged him back, saying that I was now free. He double-checked if I was free in the evening and I said yes.
"Do you want to go to Soho and get a bottle of wine and head back to my place after?" he texted.
Aha, there it was. Now, I sat there and contemplated for a bit. I wrote, "Yes, Soho would be nice" and we arranged for a time to meet.
I debated internally about if I should hook up with him or not. I wrote to some of my close friends from home to get their input.
Ultimately, we never spoke about what we were both looking for (because remember, for the first two dates, we kept our conversations surface-level). He knew I just arrived in London, so everything was new. We never got deep into anything vulnerable and the dates were as easy, breezy, and beautiful Covergirl as it gets in my decade-plus of dating. There was a high chance that he was giving all these great dates in hoping for sex.
Now, I had to mentally prep myself to never see this man ever again after this date. Since I entered the dating scene here in London, I assume every date is the last date unless the guy sets up the following and goes through with it due to the high ghosting level here.
However, I did like the British Software Engineer as a person and I enjoyed his company. I don't find too many men that I like and find attractive right off the bat. I have grown attracted to people over time but honestly, if I don't find them attractive from the get-go, the chances of me losing that physical attraction to them is quite high.
I met the British Software Engineer in Soho, where I waited for him in Selfridges, a high-end department store similar to The Bay but 100x better. From there, we walked to a fun arcade place. Except it was so busy that he said it wasn't worth waiting for because it would take forever for us to get through the games because each one was occupied.
We left the arcade and wondered what to do next. He decided after much debate (because he wanted to give me a chance to choose, though being indecisive, I really didn't care) that he would take me to Flat Iron, which is an affordable but popular London steak chain restaurant that is also cute.
It was full so he added his name to the waitlist and we went to a nearby bar while we waited. We spoke a bit and I learned for the first time that his parents were divorced and he hadn't been in contact with his father in years. This was the most I actually learned about him and who he was. After about 40-50 minutes had passed, we went back to Flat Iron for our reservation.
We both got steak and he ordered some additional sides that were absolutely delicious. When we were done, we were given a cute little butcher knife charm each to exchange for free soft-serve ice cream once we left the restaurant. I absolutely love this tiny touch and freebie!
He took me around Soho and let me enjoy walking around like a tourist. I liked our dates because knowing I was new, he always took me to new places for a good time.
We went to another bar after dinner and he got us both drinks once again. We got cozy and made out before leaving and walked some more around Soho.
I, of course, found out during our date that his flatmate was on vacation and was to return the next evening. Aha, I was essentially a seer.
I asked if he still wanted to get that bottle of wine and head to his place. At this point, I was willing and ready to sleep with this man. As 1) I have needs, 2) he took me on amazing dates and paid for them all, and 3) I had already mentally prepared that this was all he wanted. If he didn't, then I would find out shortly after. However, if all he intended to do was to hook up only, he was going to disappear regardless if I didn't sleep with him. Thus, I might as well check him off my to-do list (LOL).
Now I know that some of my friends reading wouldn't want to do something casual like this. But, remember I am here in London for the first time and trying to explore the dating scene. It makes for an adventure and honestly gives colour to my time here while I am settling into the country. I know I have plenty of options to go through when it comes to dating, so even if this doesn't work out, I will be fine.
We went to his place after he picked up a sweet rose from the local Tesco. We chatted some more in his living room and I asked if he had Netflix. I threw on a Leighton Meester movie and we watched for a bit before things of course got R-rated.
Now for the friends that want the deets, just message me because I as much as I am documenting my dating stories here, I gotta keep some privacy (LOL).
I ended up staying overnight and we hooked up again in the morning before he took me to Starbucks. We hung out in Starbucks for almost an hour, and I spoke to him more about what I did career-wise. Yes, it took this long for me to talk about my occupation because again, our dates have always been surface-level.
We kissed some more before we parted as he was on-call for work. I said, "See you!" but knowing fully well that might be the last I ever saw this man again.
The Aftermath
As I finish up typing this dating entry, it has been 3 days since I last heard from him, which was when England lost against Spain during the Euro Cup (Spain is a whole other level when it comes to their football team, so honestly, England didn't really have a chance...).
So what are my thoughts? I would be lying if there wasn't a part of me still hoping he would message me (I was the last person to write to him, but kept it hands-off because if he wanted to, he would). However, being mentally prepared to never hear from him again empowered me to choose to go home with him that night.
Operating in the dating scene where every day is your last and knowing you have plenty of options make it easier to move past guys you liked but didn't work out. I know that I am spoiled for choice here in London and not being stressed about looking for something serious works in my favour.
Of course, if the right man takes me off the market, I would not object because at the end of the day it is a long-term goal. For now, I will continue to see what London has to offer. But I am glad I can now officially say I have sampled the local cuisine.
