#OnThisDay Memphis Sanitation Worker Strike in 1968
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
#OnThisDay The Memphis Sanitation Workers strike began, the last campaign that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked on before his assassination on April 4, 1968. Eleven days after two sanitation workers were crushed to death by a faulty garbage truck compactor, over 1,300 workers walked off the job to protest the horrid working conditions, poverty wages, and discrimination they faced in Memphis, led by organizer T.O. Jones. King went to speak at a rally of 25,000 people and marched alongside protesters carrying signs reading “I AM A MAN” to address the basic human rights that workers were being denied by the city. At his last public appearance, he spoke to the citizens of Memphis urging them to take action and support the striking workers. He stated “you are reminding, not only Memphis, but you are reminding the nation that it is a crime for people to live in this rich nation and receive starvation wages… The question is not, ‘If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?’ ‘If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?’” King was assassinated the next day.
After his passing, Coretta Scott led 40,000 people throughout Memphis in a silent march and the city subsequently voted to give union recognition to the sanitation workers under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Fri, February 19, 2021 “The majority of the Negroes who took part in the year-long boycott of Montgomery’s buses were poor and untutored; but they understood the essence of the Montgomery movement; one elderly woman summed it up for the rest. When asked after several weeks of walking whether she was tired, she answered: ‘My feet is tired, but my soul is at rest.’” —Martin Luther King, Jr. ~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ #martinlutherkingjr #drmartinlutherkingjr #drmartinlutherkingjrquote #martinlutherkingjrquote #busboycott #montgomerybusboycott #montgomerymovement #learnsomethingneweveryday #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #bhm #monriatitans https://www.instagram.com/p/CLgLGm0DB9Y/?igshid=1ajtpwidntrch

#Repost @history (@get_repost) ・・・ On #ThisDayinHistory 1955, Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. The successful Montgomery Bus Boycott, organized by a young Baptist minister named Martin Luther King, Jr., followed Park’s historic act of civil disobedience. Parks had been active in Civil Rights prior to 1955, having joined the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP in 1943.And prior to the bus boycott, local civil rights leaders had been planning to challenge Montgomery’s racist bus laws for several months. In fact, many young women had refused to give up their seats in the years prior to this coordinated effort. Following Parks’ arrest, the NAACP and other African American activists immediately called for a bus boycott to be held by black citizens on Monday, December 5. The first day of the bus boycott was a great success, and that night the 26-year-old Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. emerged as the leader of the bus boycott which stretched on for more than a year, diminishing Montgomery bus ridership by 70 percent. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court struck down Alabama state and Montgomery city bus segregation laws as being in violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Rosa Parks died on October 24, 2005. Three days later the U.S. Senate passed a resolution to honor Parks by allowing her body to lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Happy Birthday, Rosa Parks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#OnThisDay civil rights activist Rosa Parks was born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. In 1981, Local 1199 honored Parks for her lifelong dedication to the civil rights movement at their annual Salute to Freedom event with performances by Harry Belafonte and others. Photos by Dan Miller.
The last image, from our local 1199 photograph collection, was drawn by Burt Silverman during the Montgomery bus boycotts, where Rosa Parks  famously refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. Parks was active in the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP during this time and trained with the Highlander Folk School (whose FBI files on microfilm are available at the Kheel Center) right before the boycott. Her efforts led to the formation of the Montgomery Improvement Association, with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as their president, and success in a suit against the segregated bus system for being unconstitutional. She was later awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Let's give it up for a seamstress who changed the world by refusing to be treated less than a human. ⁣ Rosa Parks (1913-2005)- had to drop our of high school to care for her dying grandmother, and married when she was only 19 to a man 10 years her senior. Her husband encouraged her to get her diploma and join the @naacp. A part of her work there was protecting Black men from false accusations and lynchings; the other was ensuring that Black people who had been sexually assaulted by white people could get their day in court. She herself had been the survivor of an attempted assault by a white neighbor in her youth. ⁣ On December 1, 1955, Rosa's refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus led to her arrest. The Black population of Montgomery would boycott the buses on the day of Parks’ trial, Monday, December 5. By midnight, 35,000 flyers were being mimeographed to be sent home with Black schoolchildren, informing their parents of the planned boycott.⁣ She was found guilty and her case was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional; the boycott ended December 20, a day after the Court’s written order arrived in Montgomery. Parks—who had lost her job and experienced harassment all year—became known as “the mother of the civil rights movement.”⁣ Her bravery led to nationwide efforts to end racial segregation. Parks was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.⁣ #rosaparks #civilrights #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #busboycott #naacp https://instagr.am/p/CM5Ts5Qlaqb/
