(second post) extensively noted im RLY unclear on a lot of endgame gintama. i am disabled and it makes me a bad reader and im irritable abt it and i dont really want anyone to explain things to me on this Specific post lol. im just thinking things thru to myself.

hard to hold a lot of sugi's gayass trauma mental processes in my head all at once. the elisions between destroying the world [math symbol] destroying gintoki who stands in the way of that as a universal constant [math symbol] destroying the political foundations of the country from the inside using connections with the same forces (this guy does NOT understand the larger background plots of gintama and isnt sure if this is correct ->) that in part got his teacher killed and set this whole thing off* [math symbol] destroying himself.

(*side note i think there was a real missed opportunity to bookend all of sugi's political maneuvering which was treated by the plot as. SIGNIFICANT. and extensive. and effective. and one step ahead of all the chars we see pre-utsuro reveals. by revisiting it after the utsuro reveals and coming down on his schemes as either ultimately fruitless and really just getting him in over his head bc he didnt understand the real forces at play OR still effective bc sorachi wanted to retroactively say he and katsura understood all the shadowy background shenanigans. but zura kind of takes over the role of political maneuverer. but worse and stupider.)

like if he just wants to kill himself why does he have to take the world down with him (katsura planning a beautiful death seppuku line). if he's doing this out of love for gintoki (canon fact.) why does gintoki need to be broken.

but if i stop trying to untangle what materially he means by all of that then i can understand sugi's actions post-execution as kind of in parallel with my understanding of oboro and utsuro's, which is to say, they are acting on behalf of what they think are universal laws of nature both because they believe in them and also to push the world to the breaking point to test their immutability and prove their fatalistic worldviews right or wrong. [with gintoki as the main tool to do so.]

sugi's inability to reconcile gintoki's decision to save them over sensei bc he cant understand how he'd possibly deserve it + resents gintoki for going against their understood mutual sensei as number one priority + grieves for gintoki having to bear that cross. um. turns into the desire to. destroy the world that made gintoki cry -> gintoki is an unshakeable barrier of protection in front of that world -> prove that the world sucks and isnt worth protecting by making it into sugi's own most pessimistic conceptions of it from childhood that shouyou had started to prove him wrong about -> push gintoki to a point where he will realize that he chose wrong and sugi was meant to die instead

and in parallel. avenge the death of the man who had shown him a better path in life -> throw away the life that man had sacrificed himself to protect -> um if i go down this path i just start rewriting reductionisms' proofs on seppuku and bushido again. waves hand. take the contradictory tragedy as laid out.

like utsuro trying the open mind+open heart gambit for one life and then immediately giving up. and oboro. well oboro is harder to unpack and summarize for me. but he serves utsuro's goals in service of his own goal of. proving rebellion like he and shouyou tried is futile? takes it upon himself to destroy shouyou's legacy to prove it's okay that shouyou-the-concept died. idk a lot of layers going on in oboro its not important to focus on here.

the. making a half-step of progress into a better world that you're having to pioneer and imagine into existence. and then, when u fail under the world's pushback, deciding to undo all that progress with your own hands. and one guy says no, it's still possible, and im going to do it. and you're like. what if i made it as hard as possible so that if u succeed despite that u realize my dearest hopes with IRREFUTABLE proof so that i dont have to face how scary it is to try without knowing if its even possible.

WHIIIIIIIICH. i find all of that incredibly sexy on all of their parts. i enjoy it a lot i like it when humans act out of irrepressible existential fear bc fuck man. living is scary. thats basically the backbone of every gintama antagonist and gintoki [who carries on shouyou's desire to fight and win against his own nature, and thus is himself an antagonist].

whiiiiiiiiiiich. makes it so interesting that these three specifically. other than bansai lol. are the ONLY!!!!!! real casualties of the story conclusion. that gintoki DOES carry thru and realize all their hopes of the world for them by beating them as obstacles. AND they dont get to live and see the fruits of it. but im not prepared to unpack what that means narratively at this point in time.

勇 (yū) "courage" - the second virtue of 武士道 (bushidō)

Recently I've been researching 武士道 (bushidō) - the ancient Japanese way of the warrior, mostly to try to figure out if it ever was actually a legit thing, or if it's a modern invention.

Spoiler alert: it's a bit of both. You can read my conclusions in my Wordpress article here.

Bushidō comes with a handy list of 8 virtues that one can follow to lead one's best and most noble life. You may not have been born a samurai, but you can still live like one by following this code.

The second virtue is “Courage, the spirit of Daring and Bearing”.

These 8 virtues were first mentioned in Nitobe Inazao's 1899 book "Bushido: the Soul of Japan".

He describes "courage" as “bearing” as well as “daring”, which suggests that courage has a broader meaning than merely courage in battle; it also includes enduring difficult situations.

He goes on to say: “Courage was scarcely deemed worthy to be counted among virtues, unless it was exercised in the cause of Righteousness.” This implies that true courage comes from knowing what is right, having the clear-sightedness to understand one’s own values and to hold by them, whatever the situation. It is necessary for courage to be informed by 義 (gi) integrity .

Annon-Guy: While we all know that Sol, Ky and Leo have a favorite word (Free, Hope and Pride), what do you suppose the other characters favorite word would be?

For example, I can at least see Dizzy's favorite word being Peace or Harmony.

Robo-Ky's Buckle is "Ennui" or "Boredom" in case you're wondering the impetus behind that character.

Then there's Malbeth and his word "Sacrifice", though that's a story for another time.

Flament Nagel and A.B.A. would probably be "Passion" (which is a play on Nagel's name, actually).

Raven's would probably be "Life", and understanding his own Life.

Justice is exactly what her name implies "Justice"... the true meaning of her own raison d'etre.

Ariels ideologies revolved around "Excessive Indulgence", and the Greed of Mankind's Hopes for things they could not fully attain.

Ramlethal would focus on "Individuality", while Elphelt would focus on "Purpose", Valentine would focus on "Love", while Jack-O' would focus on "Frivolity".

I-No's focus was on "Being Human", while Axl Low's focus was on "Family."

Despite what people may think of him, Kliff Undersn wanted "Forgiveness" for all his actions during the War.

Testament is once again a "Testament" to his father Kliff... a living epitaph to Kliff's beliefs.

Slayer, while his ideologies center on Dandyism, was also a man who believed in the "Balance" between Humans and Demihumans.

Potemkin, you might say has a Burly Heart Clad in an Armor of Faith.

Nagoriyuki's beliefs stem from "Loyalty" to his Master, along with the tenets of Bushido (a kind of chivalry).

If Zappa had a word that summed him up nicely, it would probably be "Courage".

Johnny bears strong beliefs in "Luck" and "Family", in case you were wondering.

Meanwhile Kum Haehyun believes in "Hard Work" and "Dedication".

Jam Kuradoberi's focus would be on "Talent" and the "Gifts" she was born with.

Venom, much like Slayer's focus of Balance would be centered around "Karma"... and the buildup and drawbacks of such. Venom is also a strong believer in Bushido as well, like Nagoriyuki is.

Millia Rage has strong beliefs centered around "Honesty" and the "Truth" of the values of Life.

Anji has similar feelings to Millia on Honesty, but he is also a stern follower of the concept of "Brilliance"... the beauty and "Potential" found in everyone and in Nature.

If Zato were to reflect on his own ideologies, while he might not put much value or stock in them (in his current state), he probably values "Memories" the most. The Living Shadow of his past that still haunts him. Eddie would a share similar attitude towards Memories, but more than that, Eddie enjoys being "Alive" and having a "Life" to live on with.

Then of course there's Baiken... while she did not have any beliefs besides "Revenge" at first... she's begun to change more and more... so probably her keyword would be "Understanding" or "Enlightenment", simply grasping the world she now lives in.

For Delilah (and her brother Romeo), of course they value Family... but they also believe in the possibilities of "Dreams".

Meanwhile there's Sin... I think the most appropriate word for him would be "Resilience": the idea of "Being Yourself" no matter how crazy life is for you.

As for Dizzy, while she does value "Peace"... she also understands conflict and the necessities of it. More than anything, Dizzy believes in "Harmony"... the idea of everyone getting along on their own terms (even if not everyone is compatible).

Moving on there's Chipp: while he's still a bit rough around the edges... I'd say the best word to describe him is "Ambition". He wants things to have a certain "Order" to them, even if the means isn't as important as the end.

As for Answer... given how busy he is keeping Chipp in check: "REST" would be his keyword... sleeping and taking care of himself being VERY IMPORTANT to him.

Goldlewis, while he does believe in "Freedom, Truth, Justice and the American Way"... beyond all those catchphrases Gold is all about "SANCTITY"... A place to call "HOME" ... a literal Fortress that's worth protecting.

Bridget also believes in having a "Home" and "Family"... but you'd be surprised to know Bridget believes in "Manliness": in other words, the idea of "Being Cool".

I would imagine Giovanna believes in being "Sexy", though that might just be on the surface... Gio is really all about being a PROFESSIONAL.

Finally, I'll mention Happy Chaos and Asuka:

Happy Chaos, of course believes in the DRAMA that Humanity can produce... so that's pretty self-explanatory.

But Asuka... he believes in "REASON".

"Heaven made Man for its own Reason, Men accept Men for their own Sake." was a catchphrase of his during GG2 Overture.

Asuka believes that everything happens for a Reason, and to parse that is part of his task as both a Scholar and a Mage.

Takagin Discussion: Story Romantic Parallels (Part 1)

I've been wanting to make a post talking about the romantic parallels Takagin have with other more established romantic pairings in Gintama. The direct parallel with Enshou destroyed me, then I started thinking if Hijikata and Gintoki are similar... how about Hijikata and Takasugi, then found way more parallels with Hijimitsu. Then I realized there was MORE with Umibouzu and Kouka. Then accidentally found some more with Matako (whose feelings I like to think are more familial).

Personal interpretation bias as always. I am tackling this from the standpoint that there may have been some implied romance.

I talk about Umibouzu/Kouka, Hijimitsu, Enshou and Matako.

Edit (17/2/2024): I somehow mistook Shouyou's words 'a sword is to protect your soul' to simply being 'to protect'. This makes a HUGE difference, because it means Gintoki has been fighting to understand and find himself all this time. MAN, I feel downright horrible about this - I have revised it to fit this interpretation. But this does make the parallels stand in a much better way that makes Gintoki a far more genuine, free person as he should be. It only further strengthens how Gintoki is very much a loving person. Edits have been made in the parts marked with an asterisk (*)!

Gintoki and Kouka being born different from normal people and having to fight for their survival in a place surrounded by death.

Both bear a title that captures the life they had to live: Corpse-Eating Demon and Master of Kouan. Both are initially mistaken for monsters that turn out to be a cute child/pretty woman in a place full of death.

However, Gintoki was taken in by Shouyou early on, so he no longer had to fight for his survival. But that event also instilled the sense of obligation in Gintoki that Kouka has--

Gintoki and Kouka being trapped to a life of solitude for their obligations and birth circumstances.*

Kouka resolved to stay on Kouan to uphold her ancestors' pride who chose to endure the harsh planet, whereas Gintoki resolved to grow strong and protect his soul with a human sword as Shouyou had told him, to.

But for Kouka, this meant a life of solitude. For Gintoki, this also meant a life of solitude but in the psychological sense: to understand what it meant to protect your soul, he had to live facing the present and suppressing the true him frightened from the battlefield of corpses - the scared child who grew up in trauma. But that was much needed if he truly wanted to live, because monsters born from bloodshed can't live among humans.

This would explain the detachment both of them suffer from - which for Gintoki still shows until now while Kouka seems to recover from it after marrying Umibouzu - which is will be something I talk about later.

Then there's Kouka's inability to live away from Kouan, which could also be likened to Gintoki's inability to escape his emptiness from childhood: Kouka's bored eyes and Gintoki's dead-fish eyes, but the latter continuing on because the scared child within him is still living in solitude... because Gintoki hates talking about the past, not trying to do anything about it. Monsters can't live among humans, after all.

Takasugi and Hijikata's thorny path as children from not being able to meet the expectations of their families

Hijikata was thrown into the thorny thicket and became obsessed with strength from having witnessed the only older brother who loved him getting hurt because of him. Takasugi was already obsessed with strength from the get-go from not being able to live up to the standard bushido, and it led the two astray, not knowing what they actually wanted out of life.

They became lost to strength because Takasugi was not able to live up his family's expectation and Hijikata had a taste of the helplessness of being a burden to the only family member who loved him. In a way, both were made to feel like they only brought shame to their families, and it led them to trying to find a place elsewhere with strength alone, landing them in Shoka Sonjuku and Shinsengumi.

(Both of them are being judged by the people they want to call family, except Takasugi already seems used to it... Takasugi was also casted out long before Hijikata by his family beating him up and disowning him.)

Takasugi and Umibouzu's unexpected meeting with someone stronger than them and becoming entranced with them.

Takasugi's pursuit of strength led to a chance encounter with Gintoki, who becomes his life goal of beating. Umibouzu heavily implies that his instincts were telling him to keep away from Kouka for how dangerous and strong she was.

In a way, Umibouzu's instincts can be likened to Takasugi's pursuit for strength covering up the humanity inside him that just wants a place to call home. Especially when Umibouzu makes it a point that he has something he has to say to Kouka as himself. Takasugi's dialogue implies how he never got to be fully honest with Gintoki, even till the very end where he insists on seeing Gintoki as someone to beat. The only honesty he could express was how he didn't want to see Gintoki's disheartened face.

And furthermore, Gintoki later jokingly takes the title of the strongest from headbutting Umibouzu, when that was Kouka's title.

Gintoki and Mitsuba's unconditional acceptance of Takasugi and Hijikata

What made Takasugi fall in love anyway? His reasons are definitely closer to Hijikata, considering their similar living conditions and origins. Despite being reduced to a thorny thug and having strange tastes, even dragging her brother so brashly like that, Mitsuba still smiles and laughs at Hijikata in adoration - and Hijikata at some point fell in love with that innocence.

And Gintoki was the only who accepted, faced and wanted Takasugi's obsession with strength head-on, when that was all Takasugi knew as a child.

Both Hijikata and Takasugi were appreciated despite their circumstances by someone. It didn't feel like either of them had any bad intentions too, not when Gintoki and Mitsuba treated everyone the same and it was their standard behaviour. Even though Hijikata and Takasugi had been criticized for their unruly behaviour and were shames to their families, there was someone who didn't see them any differently from any other people. It isn't surprising Hijikata fell in love, and likely Takasugi too.

Gintoki and Mitsuba's love for people*

The reason Takasugi and Hijikata found such a person in the first place was because Gintoki and Mitsuba were both selfless, loving people from the start. Albeit Gintoki is definitely far more detached and distant than Mitsuba ever was (which are where his parallels with Kouka come in).

Gintoki's love for people has been a big theme of the story, even being the reason he turned down Sakamoto's invitation to space despite the tragic war. And just like Mitsuba, this love is more about wanting people to stay true to themselves and happy over their physical presence.

Gintoki chose to behead Shouyou, because it meant protecting what Shouyou truly wanted. Even though Gintoki loved Shouyou dearly, beheading him meant protecting his soul. Gintoki probably didn't hesitate ignoring his promise with Takasugi, because he could sense Shouyou's desire to protect his students far surpassed Takasugi's desire to protect Shouyou. That Takasugi probably just wanted to protect what Gintoki held precious. If that was really his intention, then what Gintoki held precious was the souls of his loved ones anyway, not their physical presence.

But it isn't easy. It's lonely, just as Mitsuba had her mixed feelings seeing Shinsengumi walk away, and Gintoki had shed tears at having to kill the father figure in his life for what he cherished.

But even so, both find a strong sense of joy in seeing the people they love staying true to themselves. If not, Mitsuba wouldn't have been such a good sister to Okita, and Gintoki probably wouldn't have been able to resign to just living peacefully after what he experienced as a child. Especially in Gintoki's case, when even Katsura had strayed from protecting others as his very own grandmother taught him after everything he had seen on the battlefield.

After all, everyone wants to to satiate their own ego somehow, but it seems the joy of just seeing people living the way they want overpowers that ego in both Mitsuba and Gintoki.

Gintoki and Kouka avoiding attachment to protect themselves, but end up warming up to people anyway.*

Gintoki is the very picture of detachment by living only through facing what's in front of him. Even his actions of casually throwing his textbook away contrasting Katsura and Takasugi shows how detached he is from the past too. Although he was probably the happiest back then, having been with family.

But he's also detached from the people around him. We see that in his childhood from how he reminisces looking at Katsura and Takasugi from afar, both surrounded by many children (and some official art even depicting him as distant from the others). And Gintoki is all alone, looking for another monster who is Shouyou.

Even now with Yorozuya, Shinpachi had been worrying about how Gintoki never wanted to do anything. All he wants to do is protect what's in front of him - as the theme is in the entire story. He loves people, but he never properly lets them in. Even though he still had so many regrets and pains from the past that he never looks back on, which ends up leaking out to influence his choice to find Shouyou after Utsuro's death and making Shinpachi and Kagura realize that it was the wish he never told anyone. No one can be fully happy if they don't come to peace with their past. Especially when it makes you feel like you will never truly belong anywhere.

It bears a resemblance to Kouka settling for what little happiness she had in Kouan to uphold her ancestor's pride and to keep living, and only being swayed when shown a greater happiness by Umibouzu. As for Gintoki, he didn't want to lose himself to the past and so has to keep avoiding it, back in Shoka Sonjuku and even now, even if it means having to settle for a present that isn't fully him. Even if he's actually an empty monster very much like Utsuro.

Both show an inclination to distance themselves from others, as seen by how Kouka remained indifferent throughout her conversations with Umibouzu and Gintoki never talking about himself. But they end up caring too much about the people they distance themselves from, which is what ends up entirely distracting Kouka from the way she initially intended to live whereas forcing Gintoki to carry even more burdens that would obviously make it harder for him to live with his soul intact.

This teaches them both that happiness in the present can only be found from letting people in. Because of this, both change their minds: Kouka decides to leave Kouan, and Gintoki decides to take on the burden of letting more people in when he had already decided he could no longer doing so. This leaves Kouka doomed to die, and Gintoki to have to fight an even harder battle to not lose himself to the past.

But this was still a far better happiness than choosing to live alone to protect yourself.

Gintoki's words that end up saving Kamui from his despair sound very much like the basis for Kouka's words to Kagura about family - you just need someone who'll stay with you, no matter how idiotic they are.

Life isn't about living up to some name to feel good enough and capable to do what you want to do, which Kamui was trying to do to protect his family. This is something Kouka herself was trying to do, but learned that it didn't matter after Umibouzu kept insisting to reach her and Orochi celebrated her departure instead of punishing her.

Gintoki knew this from the get-go because he learned from Shouyou early on that it was about your soul, to not give in to the what the world around you decided for you and truly find yourself. So this stops him from losing himself to the name of the Corpse-Eating Demon, and allows him to wander lost to find the answer within the people around him, including Edo. Edo to Gintoki became what her family was to Kouka.

But unlike Kouka, a piece of Gintoki still stays alone in the past because of this very same mindset of how the present matters. Because his past isn't a commonly shared experience, he can't just share his past with people and expect to be be understood and still be treated as a normal human. Only someone who is determined to understand him like Umibouzu was with Kouka could truly drag him to the present (spoiler: Takasugi obviously).

The realization that the present is most important, not what you are outside of that, is the reason why Kouka allowed Umibouzu to be part of her life, even if it meant her physical death. And Kamui was put at ease by such values, like sleeping on his mother's lap who had once struggled like him.

(I just wanna say--Kamui is such a good example of what it's like to blame yourself hard for not being able to protect family. If Takasugi's main goal was truly Shouyou, then his choices and dialogue should've been more similar to Kamui, methinks.)

Takasugi and Hijikata not feeling suited to making the person they love happy, and so instead protect their happiness from afar.

This whole discussion is already delusional enough but this is by far the most delusional and based on pure inference. But this makes most sense to explain why Takasugi thinks so much about Gintoki's suffering without telling him straight up. This what I think Takasugi's obsession with Shouyou was all about, a way to protect Gintoki's happiness.

Takasugi's actions with Tendoshuu intersects with Hijikata's actions with Tenkaiya. Both went on a suicide mission on their own against them without the people who they know would want to fight alongside with them no matter what (Kiheitai and Shinsengumi). Hijikata would kill the fiance of a dying woman out of revenge and anger at him for not making her happy, Takasugi would let the world Gintoki loves get destroyed if it meant they could go back to the past and Gintoki could be happy with Shouyou again.

Of course there is still Takasugi's love and appreciation for Shouyou accepting him and teaching him his way of life - but it really feels only to a similar extent as Katsura. Not when he didn't say a single word about suffering without Shouyou in his clash against Gintoki to come to terms with his suffering. You can even interpret his gaze and smile upon Shouyou as feeling like he's finally made amends for his guilt at the very end--

In part 2, we talk about post-Shouyou execution Takasugi where more of the Enshou and Umibouzu parallels come in!! How his guilt towards Shouyou may be similar to one Enshou felt towards his brother.

I have been researching the Chinese bagua and connected martial arts of baguazhang for the past several hours trying to make sense of the Prodigious.

this isnt the first time ive done this either, ive done this many times, none to much avail

the wiki presents the Bagua, which i believe is a Taoist concept about the principals of reality or something. as an inspiration for the animals the user can transform into while using the Prodigious, which makes sense given that in the ending credits a page of Gabriel's research is shown showing some antient paper with a chinese trigram, a common symbol of the bagua, with various animals on each of the sections, thereby establishing our associations

in this we can see 5 of the 8 animals

the wiki gives us associated animals for the bottom 3 sections that are cut off but i cant find anything to back up these claims

Now there are many different sets of animals associated with the trigram's sections depending on what version of the bagua you're looking at, but the Trigram from Yin style baguazhang, a form of chinese martial art, seems the most similar to the list of animals we get from canon.

from what i can see, whoever at the Zag team made the prodigious either had a faulty source for his info, or took some creative liberties, because somethings just don't line up.

The monkey is the only thing correct here. tiger and lion are similar enough, as are eagle and pheonix. I don't know where the hell a mantis came from and the bottom three got shuffled by whoever wrote the wiki, im guessing. If it wasn't shuffled, bear would be correct, also horse and unicorn are close enough.

Ok so, random mantis instead of rooster and things got a little shuffled and simplified, but not too bad i guess.

The wiki also tells us what element each animal is associated with. these actually seem accurate other than thunder and mountain being swapped.

If one were to unshuffle the animals and add correct associated elements, the prodigious would have these associations to the elements.

Also i couldn't find anything about the various values one has to use to have to use the various powers of the Prodigious. The closes thing i found was Japanese bushido but that obviously doesn't make sense to associate bc Chinese and Japanese cultures and believes are very distinct.

anyway none of this matters to the normal miraculous viewer, just nerds and fanfic writers who want to play around with the Prodigious.

After the Mongol invasion of 1281, Jin had lost his life to the war. A war which forced Yuna and several other residents of Tsushima to flee to the mainland to seek sanctuary.

A divine storm came and brought the Mongols to ruin, for years Yuna had believed that it was Jin’s spirit returning one final time to protect his homeland…

Though, it was unknown to her until three months after his death that she was pregnant with his child. With the help and reassurance of her adopted children and her allies from Tsushima, Yuna gave birth to a daughter whom she named by the season in which she was born.

It was then that Yuna swore that her family would never have to endure the horrors of war ever again. Swearing to never return to the island of Tsushima, it would be too much for her heart to bear.

-Chiharu had lived her whole life without knowing who her father is, only hearing short stories about him from her mother, siblings, and those who knew him. Yuna had kept it from her on purpose in fear of how she would perceive him, and the stories of the Ghost she’d hear knowing that he was her father.

-Chiharu is easily awestruck by people who have their lives figured out, knowing exactly what they want to do and what their good at. She feels as though she has no real skills that could be useful to anyone.

-She is teased often by a group of local teenagers, which often gets to her already insecure personality. Though, she is always uplifted by her family.

-She takes on several jobs and apprenticeships that she usually bails out of quickly when she doesn’t catch on right away, usually out of fear that she’ll mess up beyond the point of no return.

-She always feels as though she’s missing so much about herself that she can’t quite pinpoint who or what she really wants to be.

-Though, thanks to her optimistic outlook she tries not to let it weigh her down from taking on new challenges in hopes of finding her niche.

I will probably post more Chiharu stuff in the future but we will see!

Some Cyberpunk NPC Fashion Headcanons: Misty, Judy, and Panam

Okay, so this has been burning in the back of my brain for five thousand years- as an unfashionable fatass loser who loves the idea of clothes and style in theory, I project this love onto fictional characters. Mostly my oc, but also canon characters. So, of course in game characters wear one outfit but I've developed kind of my own idea of what their style would be based both off those canon outfits and the vibes I get~

dresses in quirky goth fashion or like a victorian ghost, no in between

eclectic as fuck

cozy sweaters are always a favorite though

dresses with peter pan collars, i have no explanation, i just feel it

How this woman was able to slip in like greased lightning, while parrying both blows from the samurai and the ten-legged polar bear ( with raw strength, alone ) was a question to be answered later. And possibly, a sight to behold and process when she proceeded to toss and flip the creature onto its side, as though she were chucking hay bales all her life. The qupqugiaq was incapacitated with a single punch, knuckles sharply connecting just behind its ear. As quickly as it reared up and charged at the man, it fell to the forest floor in a heap with a whine.

Now, she has her forehead pressed against the barely conscious, whimpering beast's temple. From there, the other can see a bright purple tag fluttering against the outer rim of its ear. She strokes its pale-furred flank, before lifting her head to meet the eyes of the man that reeked of temporal magic. He is just as scared as the creature laying before her, and thus, she keeps her tone hushed.

In a theoretical Ginga x TLK universe, how do you think the bushido nature of the dogs would clash with the shakespearian nature of lions? You could almost look at it through a similar lense to the Meiji Restoration? 🤔 my mind is running 🏃

I am definitely not educated enough in the specific historical implications/topics of this ask unfortunately but I can give you an estimate of how I think it might go down based on what the individual world building for each piece of media.

Under the assumption that a faction of Ohu's dogs are now placed in the Pride lands setting (because I feel that's the most likely to happen rather than the opposite and would be more responsible for direct conflict between the two groups), perhaps they were brought there by humans as a part of a big game hunting expedition.

If I were totally in charge of the setting, I'd keep verbal communication between similar animals but that's just how I'd go about it. For the purposes of this crossover, all the characters share speech.

I think most prominently we would see conflict over the fact that the TLK lions have a very hypocritical and self serving view of what is and isn't ethical hunting (they are very strict with when and what other carnivores are allowed to hunt, but almost certainly do not hold their own to this same standard if it's not directly a problem) whereas the dogs don't seem to think of it in any particular way other than a natural behavior they use to feed themselves. The dogs are also largely big game hunting dogs who carry their humans' interest in "is that a strange creature, let's hunt it regardless of if we are hungry or not"

I could very easily see the dogs being let loose and hunting as they typically do with little regard for local Pride land Politics and ecosystem. This would absolutely Garner the attention of the Guard and it's immediately a recipe for conflict.

Personally I don't see an outcome in which the leading members of either group come to an agreeable conclusion given their very species-centric way of life and worldview.

The dogs really have no reason to care about anything other than their particular army and families, and given the history with Akakabuto and his bears, have a predisposition for Dethroning what they would see as a clave of tyrannical wild predators who have monopolized a swathe of land.

The lions on the other hand would be faced with a pretty serious threat to their long established caste system in a way that might be reminiscent (in their minds) of the over hunting of Scar's hyenas and would be inclined to retaliate before it gets out of hand again.

I'm sure there would be individuals within both groups who would be more willing to talk certain things out, though I doubt it would outweigh the harsh conflicting belief systems. Especially since in both cases, both groups of animals would view themselves as "rightful" stewards for the land based on self decided/appointed merits.

It's also interesting to add that while they have very different core organizations of government for lack of a better term (TLK Lions are a Theocratic Monarchy and the Ginga Dogs are more of a loose Stratocracy with no real important spirituality in their society) they both heavily value blood ties and lineage in their systems of leadership.

Normally on bad days, Kerry liked to stay in and avoid having to face anyone, which meant everyone, including the cook and the cleaning service and the maintenance crew. It was harder to do that when he had Johnny around brooding from the fight they didn’t have, sucking the air out of the room he dragged himself into, like a tiger pacing around in a cage. Mostly he sat, and got drunk, and played until he re-opened the raw skin of his fingers, too impatient to slowly build up callouses. Sometimes he disappeared for hours, out driving around in one of Kerry’s cars, hitting up some dive bar at the edge of town that catered mostly to nomads.

V had been a ghost for at least two days, and Kerry only knew she was around because his coffee supply was starting to dwindle. She was partial to the novelty mug that swirled with iridescent colors with temperature changes– it was the only dish she ever seemed to wash. Whether she was avoiding Johnny or just him he wasn’t sure. The entire villa felt like those last few Samurai roadshows, when everyone had known it was about to explode, but nobody had wanted to be the one to light the match.

He wasn’t going to walk out this time– even if he had thought about it, he knew it wouldn’t help. Wouldn’t even give him that fleeting feeling of satisfaction. The thing he needed to get away from wasn’t Johnny.

Still, he was tempted to leave when Johnny sprawled down onto the couch next to him, right in the middle of his binge watch of some talent show. The production had actually had the balls to ask him to be a judge, but he preferred to pass his judgment off camera, where nobody could try and coach and cajole him into saying what they thought he should say. He could practically feel Johnny vibrating with some pent up energy, not quite making it a full minute before he opened his mouth. “There not any sort of commercial break on this garbage?”

“Whole thing was a commercial for the label,” Kerry said. “What do you want?”

“I don’t want anything,” Johnny said, throwing up his hands. “I’ve been trying to figure out what the fuck it is you want, but you just keep shutting yourself up in your room, except for when you’re out here watching…some godawful talent show.”

“They weren’t all bad. Course it’s all about the money, not the talent.”

“Must be a lot of fuckin’ money,” Johnny muttered, which made Kerry laugh. He looked like he wanted to say something else, but he stopped, and after another couple of minutes Kerry allowed himself to relax.

They watched the rest of the season, and a few episodes of the next, until neither of them could take the over-produced satiny sheen, and the unending parade of bright-eyed hopefuls just waiting to get fed to the machine for entertainment. Johnny was usually the worst person to watch anything with, since he couldn’t bear to go more than five minutes without sharing his opinion, but it felt good to tear into shit with him again. Not much had changed, in that respect.

Not much, except that instead of trying to start an argument, Johnny managed to insinuate himself so that he was sprawled across the length of his couch with his head in in Kerry’s lap. Kerry was still annoyed with him, but it had just been easier not to resist. The clinginess was almost endearing, in its own way, and Johnny grumbled a lot less about plot holes when he was having his hair played with.

“Is this Bushido VI or VII?” V asked, materializing around the corner of the couch and startling both of them out of a doze. She looked strange, clad in sweats and standing with her hands clasped behind her like some suit in gallery admiring the art. Hitting her cue without ever breaking character.

“Bushido VI,” Johnny answered grumpily. “VII is when they go underwater.”

“How could I forget?”

“Must have had some sort of head injury.”

“Fuck you,” she said, without rancor.

“Sit down,” Kerry told her, yawning. “Good part’s coming up.”

She sat down on the carpet in front of the couch, her shoulder bumping up against his right leg. The added support made it easier for him to adjust and stretch out his knee, which had been starting to ache. He’d had too many people try to manage him not to recognize what she had done, but he couldn’t bring himself to be annoyed. Instead, he reached out and experimentally ran his fingers up the side of her neck, watching her shiver and then relax into the touch.

Johnny let out a little amused hm, and nuzzled Kerry’s leg. “Gonna get her hopes up, Ker.”

“Eh, well,” he said, feeling a smile creep onto his face as V made a disparaging noise. “Never hurts to dream big.”

You wipe your hands of a thick layer of dust as you swing a leg into the open-top car, climbing into the driver's seat and sitting down. Its interior bears an ancient coat of dirt and grime, having been abandoned to the mercy of the elements for years, but she makes no indication of notice as she perches her stilettos on the dashboard, long legs pulled in at an awkward angle.

Lights flicker brightly onto the screen as the projector you've solidly beat whirrs to life. Loudspeakers crackle before roaring. A notice reminding viewers to silence their holophones before the movie starts.

"Really? You couldn't have skipped over previews?" She asks, scrunching her freckled nose in distaste.

"Really? You couldn't have picked a better date spot?" You fire back, voice dripping with sarcasm as your eyes roll.

A title card flashes:

Bushidō X.

Bushido was a campy series of films known for their blood, tits, and gore. Somewhere in their neomodernistic critiques, they gained a cult following, and managed to crank out ten of them.

"Can't go wrong with the classics," she settles back into her seat, an easy grin on her face. "BD's got nothing on practical effects."

You lean in toward her, lowering your voice beneath scripted battle cries. Talking during a movie feels like breaking a social taboo, though no one else will be joining you in this screening for two. "I didn't think this was your type of place."

The scene opens to a woman in a yellow jumpsuit wielding a sword, slashing wildly through a group of what you can only assume are the movie's throwaway bad guys.

"You kidding me? I've always wanted to go to the drive in. Problem is, the movies they show are too good to hanky-panky in the backseat during."

"They closed this place in like, '64. You were not doing the hanky panky in 2064."

She extends the well-manicured fingers of her 'ganic hand to count backwards, muttering to herself as she does so. Finally, she snorts, elbowing you with her metal arm. "Got me. But I always wanted to go."

The woman in the yellow jumpsuit is joined by a man with a cyberware arm, and together, they blast the bad guys into oblivion. An antagonist falls back as he faces defeat at the end of a katana, and a thick slurry of his blood splats, coating the screen and oozing down the camera lense.

A queasy, fearful moaning rings low.

Neither of the characters on screen seem affected, and so you look beside you. She winces, growing paler by the second in the light of the silver screen.

"Geez," she forces a strained laugh, "you know what we forgot to pick up? Snacks. I should go do that. I'll be back. Don't pause it for me, though." She says, making moves to throw herself out of the rusted vehicle you sit in.

Leave... to get snacks? You've never known her to offer herself up for labour. In fact, you had to find an entrance into this abandoned drive in and start the movie up yourself, simply for the fact that she is very unhelpful.

Could it be?

"Are you... scared?" You ask, voice lilting upwards in disbelief.

"What? Me?" She scoffs, standing and halfway out of the car now. Still plotting on her escape. "No way! I've been watching Bushido since before you were in diapers."

"I don't think your parents were letting you watch Bushido that young."

"No one pays you to think. I know my sister doesn't."

The shattering of glass plays over the old speakers, resounding with feedback as an assault carried out against the protagonists begins. The music picks up, tensions rising. Villains close in on them now.

All at once, she leaps back into the passenger's seat, drawing her limbs inside clumsily. Her shoe falls somewhere outside of the car, though she seems to not notice as her chest heaves in frantic pace with anxiety. "Jesus fuck," she hisses.

"So... you're not scared, huh?" You slide your hand toward hers, taking the fingers in between your own. The cold metal wastes no time in sapping the warmth of your skin, but still, you grin.

"I'm not scared," she insists, latching onto your hand with a growing desperation, "but you can hold my hand if you are."

"Right," you nod, drawing her in closer as you lean comfortably against the center console. "I'm scared. So I need you to stay here."

"Good."

"Plus, you're my ride home."

"Fuck you."

You press a kiss against the soft blonde of her hair as she tilts closer. It smells of cigar smoke, and tickles against your nose.

"Kidding. I love you."
