Why do you think tumblr will die in only a few years?
Answer with jargon: a strong correlation between recent economic shifts and chaotic choices by major tech companies is most easily explained if the 'traditional' social media platforms of 2005-2020 are mostly a zero-interest rate phenomenon.
Longer answer, with less jargon: Even though Musk's takeover is making all the headlines recently, the last year has in fact seen major shakeups at many social media platforms, so Twitter is actually part of a trend. Almost inevitably, these are cases of social media companies trying to find a way to squeeze more money out of their userbase (Reddit), cut costs dramatically (Twitter), or both. This marks a sudden departure from a much more relaxed attitude towards revenue in the Pictures Of Cats industry, where the focus was historically more on expanding the userbase to a global scale and then counting on world domination to sort of <????> and then the company would become profitable eventually.
We joke, correctly, that Tumblr has never been profitable. But the entire structure of ad-supported content curation between human users is deeply suspect as a business model; IIRC Twitter was never profitable either, and Facebook has been juicing its numbers in very shenanigany ways. Discord was actually making money on net last I checked, at least a bit, so they're not all completely in the hole. But even if you take the accounting figures at face value, none of these companies has anything like the amount of money that their cultural prominence would suggest. Instead, they're heavily fueled by investment dollars, money given by super-rich people and institutions in the expectation that fueling the growth of the company now will pay off with interest later.
So what changed?
I'm not an expert here, but I'll do my best to muddle through. The American Federal Reserve has one mandate that dominates all others (sometimes called the 'dual mandate'), and one primary tool that it uses to enforce that mandate. The goal is to maintain low (but nonzero) rates of inflation and unemployment, which in their models are deeply interlinked phenomena. The tool is 'rate hikes', or more specifically, tweaking the mandatory rate of interest that banks charge one another when making loans.
As a particular consequence of this, hiking the rate also means that bonds start paying out much better. When the rate hike goes through, that affects people who let the government borrow their personal cash- that is, people who buy bonds- as well as institutions like banks that lend to one another. A rate hike means that you, personally, can make a little extra money by letting the government borrow it for a while. The federal government of the US is a rock-solid low-risk choice for this kind of moneymaking scheme, so the federal interest rate sort of defines the 'number to beat'; to attract investors, a company has to give those investors money at a better percentage than whatever the feds are offering. Particularly since a company is a lot more likely to go out of business than the state!
To wrap this back around to the Pictures Of Cats industry: the higher the rate hike, the better your company needs to be doing (or the less risky it needs to be as an option) to attract big investment dollars. Very high rates make it very hard to convince people to invest in business activity rather than the government itself, and very low rates put moonshots and big dreams on the table, investment-wise, in a way that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Social media companies were one of these big dreams.
In the great financial crisis of 2008, the Fed took the dramatic step of reducing their rate to zero, trying to juice the economy back to life. And ever since then, they've kept it there. This has produced an unprecedented amount of funding for very crazy stuff; it's part of what has allowed so many weird new tech companies (Uber, streaming services, etc.) to get so much money, so quickly, and use that to grow to massive size without a clear model of how they're ever going to make money. This state of affairs kept going for quite a while, with no clear stopping point; that zero-interest environment has been one of the shadowy forces in the background that shaped fundamental contours and limits in how our Very Online World has grown and developed. Until COVID.
Or rather, the bounce back from COVID: we suddenly saw a massive spike in inflation and an incredibly strong labor market, as employees quit in record numbers, negotiated higher salaries, and found better work, and at the same time supply chain issues and other economy stuff caused prices to climb dramatically. Recall the Fed's 'dual mandate', to control the employment rate and inflation. This was, basically, kicking them right in the jooblies. They responded in kind, finally finally raising their rates for the first time in 15 years. For some of the people reading this, it'll be the first significant shift in their entire adult lives.
The goal, as I understand it, is to fight inflation by reducing the amount of outside investment into private companies, forcing them to hire fewer people and pay smaller salaries, ultimately drawing money out of the working economy and driving prices back down by lowering demand for everything. You get paid less, so you eat out less, and buy at cheaper restaurants when you do, so restaurants have to compete harder by lowering their prices; seems pretty dodgy to me as a theory, but it's the theory. And the first part will almost certainly work- companies are going to see less investment.
For social media companies that are still paying most of their salaries with investor dollars instead of revenues, this is especially catastrophic. Without outside investment, they're just a massive pile of expenses waiting to happen, huge yearly costs in developer salaries and server fees. This is why, all of a sudden, every social media company is suddenly making bonkers decisions. They're noticing that nobody wants to give them any more money! So they're trying to figure out how to live a lot more cheaply, to actually somehow for reals turn their giant userbases in to some kind of actual revenue stream, or both.
Tumblr is kind of the ur-example of this kind of thing, supporting a very large userbase with no coherent plan whatsoever to start paying its staff with our dollars instead of investors' dollars. When interest rates were low and Scrooge McDuck had nowhere else to hide his pile of gold coins, a crazy kid with a dream was the best alternative available to him. But now, unless something changes, he's going to notice he can just buy bonds instead, and that crazy kid can go take a hike.
That's why I think Tumblr is living on borrowed time, though I don't know how much. Like all cartoons, the economy doesn't really fall off a cliff until somebody looks down and notices they've been standing on thin air this whole time. But they always fall eventually; that's the gag.

The Slowdown in US Job Growth and Rising Bankruptcies: Implications and Outlook
Tumblr media
Recent reports indicate a sharp slowdown in US job growth, with the unemployment rate rising to 4.3%. This trend, coupled with a record high in bankruptcies, signals deeper economic challenges. As the Federal Reserve considers cutting interest rates in September, if not sooner, it's crucial to understand the implications for the economy and personal finance.
The slowdown in job growth reflects a cautious approach by businesses in response to economic uncertainties. This trend, combined with a rising unemployment rate, signals potential difficulties ahead for many individuals seeking employment. Businesses are hesitant to expand their workforce amidst uncertain economic conditions, and technological advances reduce the need for human labor in certain sectors. Increased global competition also leads to cost-cutting measures, including hiring freezes or layoffs.
Bankruptcies have surged to a record high, driven by factors such as persistent inflation, high interest rates, and ongoing supply chain disruptions. Rising costs of goods and services reduce profit margins for businesses and disposable income for consumers. Higher borrowing costs make it more difficult for businesses to finance operations and growth, leading to financial distress. Disruptions in the supply chain can lead to shortages and increased costs, further straining business finances.
In response to these economic challenges, the Federal Reserve is likely to cut interest rates in September to stimulate economic activity. Lowering interest rates can make borrowing cheaper, potentially boosting investment and spending. The anticipated rate cut aims to encourage borrowing by making loans more affordable for businesses and consumers, boosting economic growth by increasing spending and investment, and managing inflation by stimulating economic activity and preventing deflationary pressures.
Amidst these economic uncertainties, Bitcoin presents itself as a hedge against traditional market volatility. Its decentralized nature and limited supply make it an attractive option for preserving value. Bitcoin operates independently of central banks and government policies, providing a hedge against political and economic instability. With a capped supply of 21 million coins, Bitcoin is immune to inflationary pressures caused by excessive money printing. Bitcoin's growing acceptance as a digital store of value makes it a viable alternative to traditional assets like gold.
When the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, it often acts as a catalyst for Bitcoin's price. Historically, lower interest rates have led to increased liquidity in the financial system, which can drive investment into alternative assets like Bitcoin. Lower interest rates increase the money supply, providing more capital for investment in assets like Bitcoin. With traditional savings and bonds offering lower returns, investors seek higher returns in alternative assets, including cryptocurrencies. As interest rates drop and the money supply increases, concerns about inflation drive investors to assets like Bitcoin that are perceived as inflation-resistant.
For individuals, it is crucial to diversify investments, enhance skills, and stay informed about market trends. Embracing digital currencies like Bitcoin can provide a safeguard against economic downturns and currency devaluation. Spread investments across various asset classes, including stocks, bonds, real estate, and cryptocurrencies, to mitigate risk. Continuously update skills and knowledge to remain competitive in the job market and adapt to changing economic conditions. Regularly monitor economic indicators, market trends, and policy changes to make informed financial decisions.
Additionally, adopting a strategy of Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA) into Bitcoin and buying the dips can be highly beneficial. DCA involves investing a fixed amount of money at regular intervals, regardless of the asset's price. This strategy reduces the impact of market volatility and can lead to a lower average cost per Bitcoin over time. Buying the dips, or purchasing Bitcoin when its price drops, can also enhance returns by taking advantage of temporary price declines.
The combination of slowing job growth, rising bankruptcies, and potential interest rate cuts underscores the need for proactive financial planning. By understanding these trends and exploring alternative investment options like Bitcoin, individuals can better prepare for the economic uncertainties ahead. Embracing strategies like DCA and buying the dips can further enhance financial resilience and long-term growth prospects.

Offering incentives can be highly effective in encouraging users to complete the calculator. These incentives should be valuable and relevant to the user’s needs.
Example Incentives:
Personalized financial reports or summaries based on their inputs.
Immediate results that provide clarity on their financial standing or potential savings.

Maximizing Your Investment: How to Buy the Best Residential Properties in Dubai
Maximizing your investment in Dubai's real estate market requires strategic planning and informed decision-making. This blog provides tips on how to buy the best residential properties in Dubai to achieve maximum returns.
For more information on home loans, visit home loan dubai.
Setting Investment Goals
Define Your Objectives: Start by defining your investment objectives. Are you looking for rental income, capital appreciation, or a combination of both? Clear objectives will guide your property search and decision-making process.
Risk Assessment: Assess your risk tolerance level. Higher-risk investments may offer higher returns but come with increased volatility. Lower-risk investments provide more stable returns but may have lower potential gains.
Investment Budget: Define your budget and consider financing options such as home loans and mortgages. Ensure you have sufficient funds for the down payment and additional costs.
For property purchase options, explore Buy Houses in Dubai.
Market Research and Analysis
Market Trends: Stay informed about current market trends, including property prices, demand and supply dynamics, and future developments. Utilize online resources, real estate reports, and market analyses to stay updated.
Location Analysis: Analyze different neighborhoods in Dubai to identify areas with strong growth potential. Consider factors such as infrastructure development, proximity to business hubs, and planned projects.
Rental Yields: Research rental yields in various neighborhoods to identify areas with high rental demand and attractive returns. Properties in central locations or near key amenities tend to offer higher rental yields.
For mortgage services, consider Dubai Property Mortgage.
Choosing the Right Property
Property Type: Decide on the type of property that aligns with your investment goals. Apartments, villas, and townhouses each have their own advantages and considerations. Apartments generally offer higher rental yields, while villas may provide better long-term appreciation.
Developer Reputation: Research the reputation of the property developer. Established developers with a track record of delivering high-quality projects on time are usually a safer choice.
Property Condition: Inspect the property thoroughly to assess its condition. Check for any structural issues, maintenance needs, and potential repairs. Hire a professional inspector if necessary.
For rental property management, visit Apartments For Rent in Dubai.
Legal and Regulatory Considerations
Title Deed Verification: Ensure the property has a clear title and is free from any legal disputes or encumbrances. The DLD provides title deed verification services to help buyers confirm the property's legal status.
Sales Agreement: Review the sales agreement carefully and seek legal advice if needed. Ensure all terms and conditions are clearly outlined, including the price, payment schedule, and any additional costs.
Residency Visa: Property buyers in Dubai may be eligible for a residency visa. The visa duration and requirements vary depending on the property's value and the buyer's nationality. Consult with the DLD or a legal expert to understand the specific visa requirements and benefits.
For property sales, visit Sell Your Apartments in Dubai.
Financing Your Investment
Home Loans: Explore various home loan options offered by banks and financial institutions. Compare interest rates, loan terms, and eligibility criteria to find the best deal for your needs.
Mortgage Pre-Approval: Obtain a mortgage pre-approval to determine your budget and streamline the buying process. A pre-approval demonstrates to sellers that you are a serious and qualified buyer.
Down Payment: Ensure you have sufficient funds for the down payment, typically 20-25% of the property's value for expatriates. Consider additional costs such as registration fees, agent commissions, and maintenance charges.
Real-Life Success Story
Consider the case of Laura, an investor who successfully maximized her investment in Dubai's real estate market. Laura conducted thorough market research, identified a high-potential neighborhood, and selected a property from a reputable developer. By following the steps outlined in this guide, Laura secured a high-yield investment and has seen significant returns on her investment.
Future Trends in Dubai Real Estate
Sustainable Developments: There is a growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable properties in Dubai. Developers are increasingly incorporating green building practices and energy-efficient features into their projects.
Smart Homes: The adoption of smart home technology is on the rise. Properties equipped with advanced security systems, automated lighting, and climate control are becoming more popular.
Mixed-Use Communities: Integrated communities that offer a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational facilities are gaining popularity. These developments provide residents with a convenient and holistic living experience.
Conclusion
Maximizing your investment in Dubai's real estate market requires strategic planning, thorough research, and informed decision-making. By setting clear investment goals, conducting market analysis, choosing the right property, and navigating legal considerations, you can achieve maximum returns. 4 factors that could affect financing the start-up
Future Financing: Small Business Loan
For future funding, we’re thinking about getting a small business loan. This means borrowing money from a bank or other lender that we’ll pay back over time. Here’s why we think this is a good idea and how it fits with some important points from a BDC article about financing start-ups.
1. Good Credit Score:
To get a loan, we need a good credit score, which shows that we’re responsible with money. We’ll make sure to:
Pay all our personal bills on time.
Open a business credit card and use it wisely, paying off the balance every month.
2. Strong Business Plan:
Banks want to see that we have a solid plan for our business. Our plan includes:
Research showing people are spending more on high-quality pet products.
Financial estimates showing how we’ll make money and manage expenses.
Marketing ideas like using social media and attending local pet events to attract customers.
3. Collateral and Personal Investment:
Banks often ask for something valuable (collateral) to back up the loan. We might use personal savings or valuable items we own. Also, putting our own money into the business shows we’re serious and committed.
4. Managing Cash Flow:
We need to show we can handle our money well. This means:
Keeping detailed records of what we earn and spend.
Saving some money to cover unexpected costs.
Regularly checking our finances to make sure we’re on track.
Other Things to Think About
Interest Rates and Terms:
We’ll look for loans with low interest rates and repayment terms that fit our business plan.
Understand how often we need to make payments and make sure it works with our cash flow.
Lender Reputation and Support:
Choose a lender known for helping small businesses.
Look for lenders who offer extra support like business advice.
Alternative Financing Options:
Besides loans, we’ll also consider crowdfunding, finding angel investors, and applying for grants, especially those aimed at small and minority-owned businesses.

What are the current bank loan interest rates in Sri Lanka?
Are you considering taking out a bank loan in Sri Lanka but unsure about the prevailing interest rates? Understanding the current bank loan interest rates in Sri Lanka is crucial for making informed financial decisions. Interest rates play a significant role in determining the cost of borrowing and can vary depending on several factors.
When it comes to bank loan interest rates in Sri Lanka, it's essential to stay informed about the latest developments in the financial landscape. Interest rates can fluctuate based on economic conditions, central bank policies, and market dynamics. Therefore, keeping abreast of these changes can help you secure the most favorable loan terms.
One of the primary factors influencing bank loan interest rates in Sri Lanka is the country's economic performance. In periods of economic growth, interest rates may rise as demand for credit increases. Conversely, during economic downturns, interest rates may decrease to stimulate borrowing and spending.
Additionally, central bank policies play a crucial role in shaping interest rates. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka regulates monetary policy to control inflation, stabilize the currency, and promote economic growth. Changes in key policy rates, such as the monetary policy rate or reserve requirements, can directly impact commercial bank lending rates.
Furthermore, market dynamics and competition among banks also influence loan interest rates. Banks may adjust their lending rates to attract customers or respond to changes in the market environment. Factors such as liquidity conditions, credit risk, and operating costs can all affect the pricing of loans.
Staying informed about current bank loan interest rates in Sri Lanka is essential for individuals and businesses seeking financing. By understanding the factors that influence interest rate movements, borrowers can make informed decisions and secure the most favorable loan terms. Consider exploring loan options offered by Siyapatha Finance, a trusted name in financial services, to meet your borrowing needs.

Patrick McKenzie writes about his (positive) experiences with a First Republic personal line of credit and his conclusion is
It has been quite popular for various parties to point the fingers at bank management teams, saying that impressively impecunious operation of the core business of banking is the proximate cause for the crisis. The crisis is caused by the pace of change in interest rates. Everything else is commentary.
Whereas my takeaway from that story is almost the exact opposite.
The positive aspects of the story are all about, like, having underwriting flexible enough to deal with his weird situation. So while it now doubt helped that the credit line has a seven* year fixed (low) rate, that's not really the core (or socially valuable) selling point of the service. But of course it's interest rates that killed First Republic.
McKenzie goes on at some length about their very low default rate for those products**, despite taking on people in weird situations like his. But that's the whole problem: banks were pricing in credit risk but not interest rate risk.
Maybe it wouldn't have mattered. The size of line of credit portfolio is dwarfed by the mortgage portfolio, and that's a business where it's much harder to deal with interest rate risk while remaining competitive.
But the story here still seems to me to be a story of bank management essentially not caring about interest rate risk.
*Really nine years, because there's a two year "draw period" before the payback period even begins.
**Although, as an aside, those rates were for a loan targeted at "young professionals" during the tech boom. Credit risk may have risen in the new era of tech layoffs.

Tumblr media
Bday is approaching, time to post next cycle's Solar Return!
Solar Return AC at 15° Capricorn. With Capricorn, I may be approaching this year with seriousness and may need to pay attention to my hair, teeth, bones, legs, joints, and knees. May present myself as authoritative, stubborn, ambitious, unapproachable. Book Blurb: #1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey returns with the hilarious follow-up to Secretly Yours, in which a down-on-her-luck Napa heiress suggests a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience to a man she can’t stand... only to discover there’s a fine line between love and hate. After losing her job and her fiancé in one fell swoop, Natalie Vos returned home to lick her wounds. A few months later, she’s sufficiently drowned her sorrows in cabernet and she’s ready to get back on her feet. She just needs her trust fund to finance her new business venture. Unfortunately, the terms require she marry before she can have the money. And well, dumped, remember? But Natalie is desperate enough to propose to a man who makes her want to kill him—and kiss him, in equal measure. August Cates may own a vineyard, but he doesn’t know jack about making wine. He’s determined to do his late best friend proud, no matter what it takes. Except his tasting room is empty, his wine is disgusting (seriously, he once saw someone gag), and his buddy’s legacy is circling the drain. No bank will give him the loan he needs to turn the business around... and then the gorgeous, feisty heiress knocks on his door. Natalie has haunted his dreams since the moment they met, but their sizzling chemistry immediately morphed into simmering insults. Now, a quickie marriage could help them both. A sham wedding, a few weeks living under the same roof, and then they can go their separate ways—assuming they make it out alive. How hard could it be? There’s just one thing they didn’t account for: their unfortunate, unbearable, undeniable attraction.
Review:
When a down-on-her-luck Napa heiress proposes a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience to the Navy Seal who can’t make wine to save his life but owns a vineyard... and just happens to be her enemy, things are about to get interesting. Natalie Vos has returned home after losing her job and her fiance, she wants to do something for herself and find some way to start over. In order to get the funds to start her new business venture she has to get married according to her father’s rules. Cue Navy Seal August Cates, August bought a vineyard and has been trying to make wine but nothing seems to be working. He bought the vineyard in order to honor his best friend who died. From the moment Natalie and August met each other there was a spark but then he messed things up and now they can’t stand one another or rather, August can’t help but antagonize her every single time they’re in a room together despite how badly he wants her. August is so bad at winemaking that he is about to give up and sell the vineyard because he just doesn’t have the money and he can’t get a loan. Natalie knows that August needs help so she proposes a deal: they have a marriage of convenience which will allow her to get her trust fund and she will help him get the loan he needs to sustain his vineyard. Yet the more time they have to spend pretending to be deeply in love the more it’s actually coming true and now they’ll have to ask each other if they are truly ready to share everything about themselves and make this work or if this was just one big unfortunate mess. No matter how hard Natalie tries to deny it she is unfortunately very very attracted to August and the more she learns about him the more she discovers she might have misjudged him and the same goes for August. This was a cute continuation of the first book, though you don’t necessarily have to read the first one to get this one. Natalie and August have that kind of banter that is playful and meant to be the line from New Girl from Nick:
Tumblr media

Top 5 Reasons your Business will benefit from Solar
Tumblr media
Sustvest has seen businesses from all different industries and verticals invest in on-site solar. We are making the renewable energy asset class, which is only accessible to ultra-high net worth individuals, family offices, or funds, available for anyone to invest in starting as low as 5000 INR.
An Improved Via Tax Benefits
At least half of your original investment in solar is recouped through tax credits and deductions, allowing solar to deliver a double-digit internal rate of return (IRR) in many cases. Now, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is back up to 30%. You can also increase the tax credit through adders, including an additional 10% if the project meets domestic content.
Reduced Utility Expenses
On-site solar replaces an otherwise sunken expense with an asset. The money you typically pay to the utility company can be used to purchase a three-decade solar asset that provides long-term benefits.
To your company. Even owners of triple-net (NNN) leased properties where tenants pay the electrical bills can recoup their investment while offering their tenants energy savings.
Potential to be Cash Flow Positive Immediately
Colorado’s Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) program allows businesses to implement solar with little to no money out of pocket (100% loan-to-cost), enabling projects to be cash-flow positive.
From year one, after recouping the tax benefits. Additionally, building owners can bundle the cost of a new roof, solar PV system, LEDs, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning upgrades into one fixed-
Interest loan with terms up to 25 years. The loan structure removes all risk for property owners, as the non-recourse financing is tied to the property via a special tax assessment. As a result, C-PACE Financing can transfer to the next owner if the property is sold.
Brand Reputation and Differentiation
The Denver metro area is growing and increasingly competitive, attracting many national and international firms. Commercial solar sets these businesses apart from the competition and provides Real estate investors with access to a more sophisticated tenant class with internal sustainability committees or mandates. Solar helps increase occupancy and base rates, meet corporate sustainability goals, comply with regulations (such as Energize Denver), and retain quality employees and tenants. Companies that have installed solar know that few capital energy improvements offer such a holistic Range of benefits.
Increased Property Value
In addition to utility savings from solar, some utilities will purchase the renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by your system. For example, a 200kW system on a 30,000 square foot flat roof in Xcel Energy.
The territory will generate approximately $11,000 in annual income for 20 years. This income directly increases your property’s Net Operating Income (NOI).
To Sum It Up
On-site commercial solar electricity is cheaper than traditional, utility-based electricity over time. As utility rates continue to raise, so does the value of your solar system’s energy, and these savings are free.
Up capital to fund core business initiatives or investments. Solar brings impressive and quantifiable ecological benefits for those seeking to achieve environmental, social, and governance goals or mandates.
To the table. It also increases the marketability of your property, giving you an edge in today’s hyper-competitive market, all while generating an attractive return on investment.

China cuts interest rates

China cuts interest rates as economic growth slows
China has unexpectedly cut a key interest rate for the first time in almost two years as official figures showed its economic growth had slowed.
Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4% for the last three months of 2021 from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics said.
That was better than most economists had predicted but were a lot slower than the previous quarter.
In another sign of weakness, retail sales growth for December fell to 1.7%.
For the year as a whole, official data showed that China's economy grew by 8.1%, which beat economists' forecasts and came in well above Beijing's annual target of "over 6%."
However, some economists highlighted that the growth data, which was the slowest in a year and a half, has yet to take into account the effect of the latest coronavirus outbreaks many business listings.
"The GDP figure didn't reflect the impact of the domestic spread of the omicron variant since late December which will hit the service industry significantly, especially offline consumption and transportation, Yue Su from the Economist Intelligence Unit said.
To help boost the economy the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said it was lowering the interest rate on 700bn yuan (£80.6bn; $110bn) worth of one-year medium-term lending facility loans to 2.85%. It was the first such cut since April 2020.
Another PBOC lending measure, the seven-day reverse repurchase rate, was also cut, while the bank pumped another 200bn yuan of medium-term cash into the financial system.
The moves put China further apart from other major central banks around the world.
The US Federal Reserve has signaled that it plans to increase its interest rate three times this year.
While in the UK, the Bank of England raised the interest rates last month for the first time in more than three years, in response to calls to tackle surging price rises.
China's economic outlook has been clouded by growing concerns about the effects of Beijing's regulatory crackdown on businesses, the financial health of some of the country's biggest property firms, and the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
China's economy grew by an impressive 8.1% last year but the country was in the middle of pandemic lockdowns in 2020 so that is coming off a low base.
And when you look at the latest data closely, there are two worrying signs.
The country's property sector is attracting less investment as some of its biggest developers face a debt crisis.
The industry's slowdown was triggered by Beijing's measures to limit the amount of money some real estate firms could borrow so does not come as too much of a surprise. But a sharp contraction could affect the country's overall economic growth as the sector accounts for about a quarter of its GDP.
Consumers also seem to be feeling less optimistic, with retail sales coming in much weaker than expected. China's strict zero Covid policy has meant that some major cities started to go back into lockdown last month due to the Omicron variant. We have yet to see the full impact of that.
To help cushion the slowdown, the country's central bank has for the first time in almost two years taken the unexpected step of making some key loans for businesses cheaper.
While that may seem to be a loosening of President Xi's "common prosperity" policies to curb corporate debt, it seems unlikely that Beijing will go much further to support big businesses and their billionaire owners.
The government is also unlikely to ditch its zero Covid policy ahead of next month's Winter Olympics and a Communist party meeting later this year where President Xi is expected to tighten his grip on the world's second-largest economy with a third term in power business listings.

Evergrande: Real estate giant moves from Shenzhen head office to cut costs
Evergrande's logo was seen being removed from the firm's headquarters in Shenzhen, China
Cash-strapped Chinese real estate giant Evergrande has moved out of its Shenzhen headquarters to cut costs.
Evergrande said it had moved to a property that it owns, but that it was still in the same city.
It comes as its rival Shimao Group said on Tuesday it is in talks with potential buyers for some properties as it tries to reduce its debts.
The firms have come under intense pressure in the last six months after Beijing moved to curb their borrowing free business listings.
China's property crisis is estimated to have wiped more than a trillion dollars off the value of the sector last year.
·How China is trying to limit the Evergrande crisis
·How China's crackdowns are impacting business
Evergrande, the world's most indebted property developer, is struggling to make payments on its more than $300bn (£220bn) of liabilities and has missed payments on its offshore debt.
"In order to save costs, the company has gone through the lease cancellation procedures for Houhai Excellence Center in December 2021 and moved to its own property in Shenzhen," Ever Grande said in a statement on its website.
"The company's registered place has not changed and is still in Shenzhen," it added.
In September, the building was the scene of protests by Evergrande investors who crowded its lobby to demand repayment of loans and financial products.
Evergrande's logo was seen being removed from the skyscraper's facade on Monday.
However, it kept hopes alive that it could avoid defaulting for the first time on its onshore yuan bonds.
That came as it extended until Thursday a deadline for bondholders to agree to a six-month deferral on a $706m payment.
Evergrande's Hong Kong-listed shares have lost almost 90% of their value in the last year as investors became increasingly concerned that it could be close to collapse.
Separately on Tuesday, real estate company Shimao denied a media report that it had entered into a preliminary agreement to sell one of its prime properties, the Shanghai Shimao International Plaza.
But the company did say in the statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it was "in discussions with certain potential purchasers and may consider disposing of certain properties if the terms and conditions are appropriate in order to reduce the indebtedness of the Group".
Shimano's shares were trading slightly lower on Tuesday, after surging by almost 20% the previous day.
