I’ve done a poor job with my ridiculous movie reviewing, so here’s The Christmas Calendar because of reasons!

A woman comes back to her small town ✔️ after her grandmother dies to take control of her estate etc etc. The woman, who was probably named Kate or something similar honestly I don’t remember and I finished this 40 minutes ago (it’s Emily. I looked it up), went to school to be a lawyer but now doesn’t practice law? I guess? For reasons? That are unexplained? Was she a practicing lawyer before she came back home or had she given it up a while ago? Why go through law school if you’re not going to bother? The questions of life.

Anyway. Emily comes back to the small town and takes over grandma’s bakery ✔️ because she’s a baker now. She’s not a baker with good business sense, as she clearly doesn’t open her bakery before 10 AM and her employee/best friend ✔️ likes to eat the food. This is where we endearingly say ‘she’s going to eat me out of business!’ while we, in fact, go out of business ✔️ . Emily is going to have to sell gram’s large house and bakery because gram went into debt paying for her law school ✔️ (which she doesn’t use). (Emily is a bit of a better businesswoman than baker in A Nutty Christmas which is another post for another day.)

Oh no! Competition! A handsome stranger ✔️ with a horrendous fake french accent comes into her shop and flirts while eating her food and getting recipes. Turns out he’s the new baker in the new mega-grocers across the street! ✔️ He will definitely Put her Out Of Business and steal her recipes for his own gain ✔️ .

But wait! Her shop gains popularity when a mysterious present is left there which turns out to be an advent calendar from a secret admirer. Each day there’s a badly written poem for the entire town to ponder over and take bets on who it’s from. There’s remarkably no shortage of men who seem like good candidates: eddie the handyman who is clearly the best guy in the entire town, james the banker or lawyer I’m not entirely sure who is the second best decent choice but who is in love with the florist (and yet never tells her ✔️ because....reasons?), chuck the super creepy guy you know who he is, and of course gerrard mcfrenchie.

Emily and bakerman have a love hate relationship ✔️ where they yell at each other across the street ✔️ , bake together ✔️ , decide to enter a competition ✔️ (which remarkably has virtually no time dedicated to it, good job), get paired together at random town event ✔️ , and naturally somehow fall in love in the midst of this ✔️ because you can clearly get to know someone well when accusing them of theft. Naturally evil megamart owner does many things to put emily out of business because...? She’s evil, that’s why! Including calling the health inspector to come to a spot inspection and getting creepychuck to tamper with her shop.

cons- the suspension of disbelief:

frenchie, who ran a bakery in new york, was unaware that his new gig at megamart would put other stores out of business. that’s how businesses work. dude.

emily opens shop far too late in the day and also doesn’t get to the bakery til like nine o’clock in the morning and also we never see her bake come on.

when the health inspector comes, her excuse for why he shouldn’t be there is “it’s two days to Christmas!”  ✔️ girl, health does not take a holiday.

health inspector also does spot inspection at megamart. there was no license displayed on the wall. frenchie, who ran a bakery in new york, seemed to be unaware of this necessary thing for running a bakery.

after evil megamart owner convinced creepchuck to literally break into someone’s property neither of them faced consequences. they just get into a car together and leave. I can only assume they are on the run.

james is in love with the florist and she’s in love with him but they both wait in agony not telling one another until it’s revealed he’s not the secret admirer?? like, man, you know that?? you can tell her???

eddie does not become the main love interest.

and look, I know these types of movies require a level of suspension of disbelief but at least be consistent within the world you built! a high class chef would not work without a license! someone caught literally on the news camera admitting how someone paid him to break into a place would at least be taken to the station!

pros -

it was a more unique story overall, which I appreciated.

spoiler: the secret admirer was actually her grandma. the gift had been her way to spend “one last christmas” with her. it was sweet.

the random activity they have to do together is bowling. BOWLING. what even is this movie.

over the weekend I watched Christmas Waltz and it was predictably forgettable. As in I’m not even really going to bother too much. Main girl (Anna? Maybe?) is planning her perfect Christmas dream wedding when her fiancee gets cold feet ✔️ and leaves. Instead of cancelling the ballroom classes she’d signed them up for, she takes them on her own. The instructor is roguishly handsome ✔️ and far more carefree than uptight businesswoman lead ✔️ . They fall in love ✔️ after he falls and she has to check on him to make sure he doesn’t have a concussion. but oh no! the ex showed back up and wants her back! ✔️ so he’ll confront dance teacher on his own to say they’re back together and make him back off. everyone is sad because there are misunderstandings galore. ✔️ but it all turns out okay in the end when dance instructor needs lead (Avery? I’m feeling an A name.) to join him at their big concert at the last minute as his partner ✔️ . they do the dance perfectly and have their first kiss on stage in front of everyone ✔️ and that’s where the movie ends which is minorly unsatisfying.
