Some changes for Broadway from the previous Goodman Theater production. Excellent performances from the entire cast with clear picture and great sound throughout; very good video. 2 DVDs. A War Paint - Broadway - April 29, 2017 (Matinee) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: The master gets caught during Face to Face. Wasted - Southwark Playhouse - 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Matthew Jacobs Morgan (Branwell Brontë), Molly Lynch (Anne Brontë), Natasha Barnes (Charlotte Brontë), Siobhan Athwal (Emily Brontë) We Are The Tigers - Off-Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Lauren Zakrin (Riley Williams), Wonu Ogunfowora (Cairo), Jenny Rose Baker (Kate Dalton), MiMi Scardulla (Reese), Kaitlyn Frank (Annleigh), Cathy Ang (Mattie Wheeler), Celeste Rose (Chess), Zoe Jensen (Farrah), Sydney Parra (Eva Sanchez), Louis Griffin (Clark) NOTES: Starts at the beginning of "I Just Wanna" and missing part of "Mattie's Lament." The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. Heads in the way, but also a lot of good close-ups. Dubble DVD! Very well captured with no dropouts, no obstruction, and no washout. The stage is filmed directly most of the time; the screens are occasionally filmed, usually when the actors are not onstage. Justin Herbert’s leadership was this NFL Draft’s most absurd criticism
Tumblr media
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Justin Herbert has provided plenty of proof that he’s a leader, but draft types love to nitpick.
New Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert — drafted sixth overall in the first round — was surprisingly honest when asked about his pro readiness at the NFL Combine. Instead of delivering the “I’m the best quarterback in the class” bravado that has become common among prospects, Herbert was realistic about his capabilities.
“I’ve never played a down in the NFL,” the Oregon alum told reporters, via NBC Sports. “I couldn’t tell you what the speed of the game is like. I’ve watched as much as I could and I feel confident with my abilities but I’ve never played in the NFL before, so to give you an answer whether I could play right now, I don’t think that would be in my best interest.”
The Athletic’s Joseph Person tweeted that he appreciated Herbert’s candor, but also pleaded “please don’t make this a thing about lack of confidence.” Too late. ESPN’s Emmanuel Acho did exactly that within 24 hours.
"Justin Herbert, he could potentially be one of the biggest mistakes of the draft."@thEMANacho and @foxworth24 aren't high on Justin Herbert being drafted early. pic.twitter.com/XPwBUl9e38

“Those are not words you want to hear from your future franchise quarterback!” Acho said. “They might’ve been honest, but the draft isn’t the time to be honest. Lie to me.”
Perhaps that’s true. An NFL team usually wants to select a quarterback teeming with confidence. Tom Brady famously (probably) told Patriots owner Robert Kraft as a rookie that he was “the best decision this organization has ever made.” Peyton Manning promised Colts general manager Bill Polian a championship if he was the first pick in 1998, and plenty of ass-kickings if he wasn’t.
Herbert could’ve lied and mirrored the conviction of those future Hall of Famers. He’s got good size (6’6, 236 pounds), experience, and possibly more physical talent than any other quarterback in the class — including even LSU’s Joe Burrow and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. However, his play at Oregon left a little to be desired and will likely cause him to be picked behind Burrow and Tagovailoa, a pair of national championship winners.
Talent evaluators can debate whether Herbert is bound for NFL success or doomed to be a bust, but they’re trying too hard to find flaws if they decide Herbert hasn’t shown he can be a leader.
The annual machine that is the NFL Draft has asked certain players to be the same and talk the same as everyone else. Inevitably, that leads to prospects — and more specifically, quarterbacks — getting criticized for falling even a little outside that box.
Is Herbert’s leadership really an issue?
It’s not hard to trace the original source of the Herbert criticism. The culprit is former Oregon head coach Willie Taggart.
Herbert started seven games as a true freshman for the Ducks in 2016 and was the clear favorite to take the reins in 2017 and beyond. Taggart, who was hired in 2017, wasn’t ready to anoint Herbert as his starter, though.
“I’m looking for more than just throwing touchdowns,” Taggart said in April 2017, via NBC Sports. “I’m looking for a guy that can lead this football team. A guy that’s going to rally everybody on this team, not just the offensive guys but defense and everyone. When we can find that guy, that’s when we are going to name a starter.”
It was a direct indictment of Herbert’s leadership skills. It wasn’t exactly unfair. A teammate called him “the shiest dude I’ve ever met” and even Herbert has been quick to admit he took a while to come out of his shell.

“I’m a different person, to be honest,” Herbert said at the NFL Combine. “The kid who showed up at the University of Oregon isn’t me anymore ... I’ve become more vocal and more outgoing and there are things that you have to do to be the quarterback. The way the quarterback carries himself, I think I’ve done a great job of becoming that over the last four years.”
Taggart didn’t take long to walk back his criticisms. Just a few months later — and after two other Oregon quarterbacks transferred out of the program — Taggart spoke glowingly about the overnight transformation of his quarterback.
“He’s been awesome,” Taggart told OregonLive in August 2017. “It seemed like Justin went to bed one night and woke up and said, ‘OK, it’s time to go.’ ... I’m not asking him to get out of himself or who he is, but he do need to speak more. He leads by example but this team needs more than just that from that position.”
In the next three seasons, not a single person around the team had anything negative to say about Herbert’s leadership. Current Oregon coach Mario Cristobal called him the best quarterback he’s ever been around.
“Driven, determined, hungry, off-the-charts smart, can make every throw, can run, can run the entire offense, can manage the run game, can flip protections — he can do it all,” Cristobal told OregonLive. “He really is that kind of a guy. He’s loved by his teammates — everyone just thinks the world of him. He’s a grinder.”
And yet, the narrative lingered.
“I was in Detroit when they drafted Joey Harrington in the first round, similar qualities with great arm strength and skills — but he couldn’t win the locker room,” ESPN analyst Desmond Howard said in November 2019. “That’s my concern with the quarterback out there at Oregon, Justin Herbert. Not sure he can win the locker room like Burrow.”
Scouts told Bleacher Report essentially the same thing in October 2018.
There are also those scouts, who did not want to be named, who say Herbert is “soft” or “immature” or “quirky, not really a leader of men.”
Every piece of evidence indicates the opposite.
At the Senior Bowl — where Herbert earned MVP honors — he drew rave reviews. Coaches thought he was fantastic, receivers cited him as the best leader there, and the Senior Bowl director railed against the notion that it was anything other than genuine.
Hearing questions about @oregonfootball QB Justin Herbert’s personality/leadership. After spending a week with him at @seniorbowl that’s a FALSE narrative. He’s got far more charisma than many NFL starters we’ve been around. He can connect with people. This is genuine . pic.twitter.com/UjdFIe35vI
— Jim Nagy (@JimNagy_SB) February 6, 2020
That continued to be the case at the NFL Combine.
Justin Herbert is out here with the first group of WRs on the bench press hyping everyone up. Cheering, clapping, yelling. Just slapped Chris Finke on the chest and yelled “let’s go baby!!!”
— Jon Ledyard (@LedyardNFLDraft) February 26, 2020
So why are there still so many questions about Herbert’s character? Because of anonymous scout season.
Herbert is just the draft’s latest victim of character critique
Two years ago, UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen had to fight a narrative that saw him as entitled, cocky, and disliked by his teammates. Even though other UCLA players said it was ridiculous and Rosen was downright charming in interviews, the label stuck.
Rosen’s career has been a disappointment thus far, with failed stints as the starter for the Cardinals in 2018 and Dolphins in 2019. But teammates backed Rosen’s leadership skills, even as some in the media took every opportunity to portray the quarterback in a negative light.
Before Rosen there was Connor Cook, who was called “selfish” and said to be unpopular among other Michigan State players. Cam Newton was called “very disingenuous” with a “fake smile” in a draft profile, shortly before he was picked first overall by the Panthers in 2011. Marcus Mariota was described as “too nice” before the 2014 NFL Draft.
“Like if you punched him in the stomach, he might apologize to you,” an NFL scout told Sports Illustrated. “I just don’t know if he’s that alpha male that you’re looking for. This kid’s a kind of fly on the wall kind of guy.”
Herbert isn’t even alone this year. Washington’s Jacob Eason has reportedly been “too comfortable” in NFL Combine interviews, according to ESPN’s Todd McShay — whatever that means.
There’s no doubt it takes a certain type of personality to lead a group of men to success in front of a crowd of over 60,000 people. While Herbert did that often at Oregon, it’s the job of NFL scouts to figure out if he’s capable of doing the same in the professional ranks.
But the draft process goes off-the-rails when it dissects the character of any quarterback who’s not a carbon copy of the Brady-Manning archetype — especially when a player like Herbert has provided three years’ worth of evidence that he could be.

Ever since 1999’s The Blair Witch Project sent early internet denizens scouring the web to figure out if its spooky, shocking story was actually true, we can’t seem to get enough of found-footage movies.
In the 19 years since Blair Witch’s theatrical run, 18 found-footage horror movies have made $15 million or more at the box office — which constitutes a financial success, considering how cheaply most of these movies are made. (See: The Gallows, which made almost $24 million on a reported production budget of $100,000.) That’s about one hit per year. As niche tastes go, found footage has a nice track record.
The subgenre has also seen its share of genuine blockbusters. Blair Witch and 2008’s Cloverfield became bonafide cultural phenomenons during their days. Two of the Paranormal Activity movies topped $100 million at the US box office and another grossed $80 million, huge hits for three consecutive Halloweens.
As streaming takes over, the market has continued to grow for the kind of low-budget, easy wins that found-footage films can provide, and the barrier to entry for filmmakers looking to try their hand at some quick-and-dirty handheld scares is lower than ever. Searching “found footage” on Amazon Video yielded 222 results.
So what is it about found footage? In an age when you can pull a phone out of your pocket and record movie-quality video, I think there’s something deeply authentic and compelling about a movie that mimics something we ourselves might shoot. It’s escapism in its rawest, most intimate form. Pair it with the primal emotions of horror, the genre that’s home to most of these films, and you have a reliable formula.
Personally, I love found footage, and think it doesn’t get enough credit for how flexible it is: It’s a subgenre that can work for everything from claustrophobic chamber dramas to fantastical epics like Cloverfield and Troll Hunter. I myself often find the cheaper ones, in their rawness, more compelling and more legitimately unsettling than the found-footage movies Hollywood produces. The amateurish aesthetic only heightens their effect.
But as any fan knows, the quality variance is high, and not just because seemingly anybody can make a found-footage movie. You’re as likely to find a dud as something memorable — and you can never be sure which you’re going to get, given these films rarely attract top-tier stars or directors that might serve as some kind of proxy for quality.
However, in the defining paradox of found footage, that can also be their strength. Strip away the big names and movie magic gloss, and you’re left with a couple actors, a camera, and a story — and when the right combination clicks, it can result in an effectively terrifying experience.
This fall, I jumped headlong into the world of shaky cams and sudden pans to something creeping around the corner. I’d seen the big hits and the cultural touchstones — now I wanted to burrow deep into the found-footage catalogs on Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Shudder. (If you haven’t seen The Blair Witch Project, it is on you, my friend, to correct that immediately. I think it holds up. Just don’t expect the scariest movie you’ve ever seen.)
I found some great horror flicks. I also saw some duds. So, as a Halloween treat, and in an effort to uncover some hidden gems, I’m pointing you in the right direction with this list of some of the best found-footage horror available on streaming. And I ranked them, because why not.
(Sadly, I cannot recommend that you watch [REC], the 2007 Spanish entry that’s probably the masterpiece of the subgenre. The only version available to stream is a very bad English dub and I would not wish that on anyone.)
The details: USA, 2014. Directed by John Erick Dowdle. Available with subscription on Netflix.

Why watch: Sometimes, all a found-footage film needs is the right setting. This descent into hell (played here by the Paris catacombs) is visually mesmerizing, which makes this movie worth your time even if the scares can be a bit inert and the drama a bit hackneyed. Plus, Perdita Weeks is compulsively watchable as Scarlett, the alchemy student who brings a documentary crew and ex-boyfriend in tow, and the hellish final act is appropriately bizarre and discomfiting.
This is one of those found-footage movies with an impressive sense of scale: You’ve taken a real journey by the final frame.
Try if you like: The Descent. With its narrow passageways and suffocating sense of claustrophobia, the comparison is inevitable.
The details: USA, 2013. Directed by Karl Mueller. Available with subscription on Shudder.

Why watch: It’s best to go into Mr. Jones knowing as little as possible. Part of the joy of Halloween horror movie season is stumbling upon titles you would never otherwise look for and seeing where they take you. That mindset can only help when watching Mr. Jones, which takes likable characters and distinctly creepy imagery and applies them to a story that becomes quite the head trip. To say much more would spoil the fun.
Try if you like: Unbreakable — but, again, I’m reluctant to elaborate. Let’s just say found footage has a special ability to, in its practical limitations, force filmmakers to be more imaginative.
The details: Canada, 2012. Directed by Christopher MacBride. Available for digital rental on Amazon and iTunes.
[embedded content]
Why watch: This one benefits from a great set-up: What if the man raving about the end of the world outside of Congress was right?
I’m a sucker for any found-footage story that’s framed as “everything went wrong for this documentary crew.” There isn’t much more here than a killer premise and a memorably creepy finale, but that is one beauty of the found-footage genre: These movies often don’t need much more than that to be successful.
Try if you like: Rosemary’s Baby. The occultism is omnipresent, and the movie is less interested in scaring the pants off of you than in constantly nudging you about how near to your own reality this whole scenario seems to be.
The details: USA, 2016. Directed by Phil Guidry, Simon Herbert, and David Whelan. Available with subscription on Amazon Prime.
[embedded content]
Why watch: The most horrifying thing in Savageland might be the dialogue uttered by some of the white, openly racist side characters who populate its mockumentary pastiche.
Say this for the filmmakers: They’re willing to let those characters be as nasty as need be. They don’t pull any punches in this gory tale set in Arizona near the US-Mexican border. Through a narrative not unlike that of Making a Murderer, we learn the story of a Mexican immigrant who might have been wrongly accused of a truly gruesome crime.
This is another small film, made on a self-evidently low budget, that has a big imagination and is bedeviled by tough, urgent political questions.
Try if you like: Get Out. It’s certainly not the scariest film on this list, but, like Jordan Peele’s masterwork, this movie is more interested in making you uncomfortable than making you jump out of your seat.
The details: USA, 2016. Directed by Nigel Bach. Available with subscription on Amazon Prime.
[embedded content]
Why watch: This is a genuine one-man show that might leave you wondering if Nigel Bach just took $1,000 and rented a random house for a weekend. Bach (who receives every notable credit here) plays Tom, a man who thinks he’s buying a house that will make for a quick flip and a tidy profit. But then the furniture starts to move on its own.
As found-footage set-ups go, Tom’s reasons for filming are left a little … vague. But you don’t come to these movies looking for iron-clad logic. And even with no budget to speak of, Bach’s film still got to me, thanks in part to an unforgettable final shot, which has been a staple of the genre since Blair Witch.
Try if you like: The Blair Witch Project. The setting is totally different, but Bad Ben marries a do-it-yourself-attitude with an impeccably realized atmosphere in a way that echoes found footage’s breakout movie.
The details: Canada, 2011. Directed by the Vicious Brothers. Available with subscription on Shudder.
[embedded content]
Why watch: Finally, a little self-awareness: Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, a.k.a. filmmaking duo the Vicious Brothers, effectively spoof those ghost hunter shows that were briefly a hot trend, while still building toward a genuinely suspenseful second half.
A key element of many found-footage films set in one place (which is a lot of them) is geography. Each haunted house or hospital has rooms or hallways — or, in the case of Grave Encounters, tunnels — that start to gain a personality and help build expectations that skilled directors like the Vicious Brothers can then exploit as the audience grows a little too comfortable.
Try if you like: Scream. It’s not taking itself too seriously but there are still solid scares to be found.
The details: USA, 2011. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Available for digital rent on Amazon and iTunes.
[embedded content]
Why watch: Looking back, it’s honestly impressive that the Paranormal Activity series squeezed three worthwhile movies out of its premise. There was so much potential for this franchise to get stale — and it did, eventually — but it took longer than you’d think.
The mythology really took over as the series went along, and the third film’s exploration of the story’s universe, while turning back the clock a little bit, gives it a fresh feeling and a gloriously gonzo finale. The 1980s, with their flickering, ever-skipping videotapes, are a great period for the found-footage aesthetic.
Try if you like: Any Paranormal Activity movie. This is a series you can jump around in, so if you’ve only seen the first or gave up after the second, this is the franchise at its best.
The details: USA, 2015. Directed by Stephen Cognetti. Available with subscription on Amazon Prime.
[embedded content]
Why watch: Critical to any found-footage movie is the set-up. Why are they filming? Why do they keep filming? Why, for the love of God, do they keep filming?
As set-ups go, Hell House LLC’s is pretty great: A crew of drifters put on haunted houses for money in random towns over the Halloween season. They like to record themselves for the memories and to document their talents in scaring their guests. There’s an implied history that adds some heft to the characters and their relationships.
But as the movie goes on, the haunters become the haunted. Their latest house has a bloody backstory, and, as we learn at the very beginning, something is going to go horribly wrong on Halloween night. But what?
This movie is extremely seasonal in the best way. There are also clowns. I’m not going to say anything else.
Try if you like: It. With its strong sense of place and some seriously scary clowns, Hell House LLC is a nice compendium to last year’s huge horror hit.
The details: USA, 2013. Directed by Blair Erickson. Available for digital rental on Amazon and iTunes.
[embedded content]
Why watch: Your definition of “found footage” might vary, but much of The Banshee Chapter is archival video or in-universe uncovered footage placed within a mockumentary framework. It counts.
It’s also, scare-for-scare, the most frightening film I’ve seen this year. Director Blair Erickson just knows how to craft a terrifying moment, and the film’s backstory of real CIA programs adds to the disquieting ambiance. It’s unsettling throughout, and you’ll yelp at least once.
Try if you like: District 9. Especially in its formatting, the film is reminiscent of that movie’s blend of found footage and conventional moviemaking.
The details: USA, 2017. Directed by Patrick Brice. Available with subscription on Netflix.
[embedded content]
Why watch: The Creep films constitute the only found-footage series that doubles as an enthralling, inexplicable character study. Mark Duplass stars as our killer, Aaron, who is … reflective on his murdering ways. He likes to share. He likes to talk. He even hires random people off the internet just so they can film him talking — for starters, anyway.
The first Creep, released in 2014, is good, but the second, which brings Desiree Akhavan’s Sara in as Duplass’s sparring partner, is even bolder. It’s sort of funny, highly uncomfortable, and totally terrifying in a few sequences.
Try if you like: The Silence of the Lambs. Duplass’s unforgettable performance, combined with his complicated relationship with Sara, a worthy foe, reminds me a lot of the Hannibal Lecter-Clarice Starling classic.
The details: Japan, 2005. Directed by Kôji Shiraishi. Available with subscription on Shudder.
[embedded content]
Why watch: This is the mother of all horror mockumentaries. Whereas many other found-footage movies go small, Noroi runs in the opposite direction, with a speaking cast of well over 25 characters and a nearly two-hour runtime.
The film follows paranormal researcher Masafumi Kobayashi, who embarks on a hellish odyssey while investigating an odd woman, her mysterious son, and some strange deaths. Along the way, we get a taste of everything: Japanese variety shows, classic talking heads, presumably recovered footage from Kobayashi’s own files. It gets very meta when actress Marika Matsumoto shows up playing a possibly possessed version of herself.
Noroi is more interested in building a searing sense of dread than conventional scares, but images from its final reel will still burn into your brain. Shiraishi is maybe the world’s only found-footage auteur (he’s made at least four others over the past decade or so), and Noroi shows all the things he can do with the form.
Try if you like: The Ring. Maybe that’s a bit obvious. But J-horror does have its own distinct mood, so your feelings about the most successful American crossover are probably a good indicator of how much you’ll enjoy Noroi.
The details: USA, 2014. Directed by Adam Robitel. Available for digital rental on YouTube.
[embedded content]
Why watch: A possession movie that starts as a drama about Alzheimer’s disease, The Taking of Deborah Logan offers such a singularly brilliant premise it’s a little baffling that nobody thought of it before.
For this subgenre, The Taking of Deborah Logan stands out as an impressive artistic achievement. It is first and foremost a painfully relatable family melodrama, with affecting performances and fully realized characters. But the terror comes hard and often in a second half that goes off the rails in the best way, when our millennial documentary crew discovers they are filming a very different story than they originally imagined.
Try if you like: Hereditary. Jill Larson and her remarkably malleable physique dominate this movie much the same way Toni Collette owned 2018’s best horror film. Both films successfully plumb issues of mental health and psychology with a demonic motif.
The details: UK, 2013. Directed by Elliot Goldner. Available for digital rental on Amazon and iTunes.
[embedded content]
Why watch: What makes Final Prayer work so well are the relationships: a semi-disgraced ex-priest is joined by a goofy, agnostic cameraman and a mildly authoritarian church official to investigate a demon-haunted church in rural England. The performances are strong and the characters actually get the time to talk about life and reveal themselves a little.
The trio sets up cameras in their house and the church and they wear headsets almost constantly because they’ve been charged by the Vatican with figuring out whether there is any evidence for this alleged haunting. It adds a little authenticity, providing an answer to that ever-present found footage question of why they’re filming and why they keep filming. You get agonizingly still, quiet scenes while waiting for something to move in the sanctuary (a la Paranormal Activity) and more kinetic action when we switch to the characters’ point-of-view.
It’s creepy throughout, without leaning on jump scares. Then, at the end, the story goes in a wildly unexpected direction.
Try if you like: The Exorcist. Final Prayer’s horror incorporates a lot of Catholicism, in a good and thoughtful way.

Musical.ly Has Merged With Tik Tok an additionatik tok tiktok tiktok followersl Chinese video app
"Do it for the Vine" was the unofficial slogan of the now-defunct, as soon as hugely preferred short-form video app Vine. You would certainly listen to individuals shout it from behind their phone cams as they shot their friends dance, planking in public, or blowing big vape clouds. The Chinese application Tik Tok offers mainly the same function that Vine satisfied till its closure in 2016. Its tagline, "Make every second matter," is like "Do it for the Vine" for the "wellness" period. As well as if you're over the age of 18, you have actually probably never ever heard of it. Just recently, Tik Tok combined with an additional Chinese video clip app called Musical.ly. The last launched in 2014. By 2015, it was currently reeling in millions of international users with the United States teen market as its centerpiece. This year, four years after its inception, Musical.ly flaunted 100 million month-to-month active individuals-- whose accounts have actually been transferred over to Tik Tok's the same system-- showing growth at about the same rate as Instagram during its first 4 years. By comparison, Spotify remains in its tenth year as well as records 180 million regular monthly active users. You can boost your followers and likes count by using Tik Tok Likes Hack Tik Tok harmonizes the significantly visual social networks landscape. Yet what sets it apart is its main focus: lip-syncing. Tik Tok's homepage suggests an electronic playground, largely comprised of tween ladies performing viral dance moves and mouthing verses to Top 40 tunes. In what appears to be an effort to draw in as well as keep young individuals, Facebook and Instagram have just recently introduced brand-new attributes that simulate Tik Tok's version. Instagram's "music stickers" allow users to include music to their pictures and videos. Facebook's "Lip-Sync Live" is exactly just what it seems like. These new enhancements could very well capture on, but they do not have the gripping result crucial to Tik Tok's charm. Tik Tok's no-frills user interface gets right to the point, nearly boldy so. Immediately upon opening the application, trending miniature video fill your phone display for 15-seconds to a min at once-- an endless stream of quick, commitment-free ruptureds of dopamine. Tik Tok has 3 fundamental functions: watch, search, and create. It's easy to browse. A retreat path, nonetheless, is tougher to carve out. The web content feed is oddly addicting, like an IV drip of effortless amusement. You don't even need to scroll: as soon as one clip surfaces, an additional plays instantly. There's something practically corrupt about these hand-held efficiencies. Twelve-year-old kids flex their preadolescent biceps. Women belly dance in full-face makeup and sporting activities bras. Tik Tok's typical customer drops within the 13 to 18 age variety, a constantly-entertained and easily-distracted generation whose needs, national politics, and also tastes govern the future of social networks as well as, for that matter, culture. The platform is developed to nurture the habits of today's young people. It echoes and also informs their way of living-- the shortened hit tunes, Kylie Jenner-inspired outfits, viral dancing steps-- like a 24/7 teen publication. Unique designs as well as trends establish across the application. One of the most enduring as well as widespread technique sees users quickly rotating electronic camera angles and miming in addition to sped-up tracks. There are "difficulties" to take part in. Some include lip-syncing a particular line or carrying out a preferred dance. Others are much more puzzling, like claiming the floor is lava and also attracting acnes on your face. The "area" is shaped by these shared activities. There are typically a couple of tracks that reign supreme among lip-syncing videos. As I compose this, the #InMyFeelingsChallenge, which entails dancing beyond an auto to Drake's "In My Sensations," is among the top hashtags, yet that difficulty and also its coming with tune will soon be replaced with an additional and discolor right into irrelevance. In his publication Just how Music Functions, David Byrne purports, "Background and society can't actually be preserved by technology alone." Without a doubt, when decreased to trending clips, music leaves a fleeting influence. Any emotional or experiential relevance amassed from a performance's social environment, or the perception left after listening to a cd from front-to-back, is lost in this digitized "social" sector. We experience music extra frequently, delicately, as well as passively than before. A document isn't limited to the home; we could pay attention to it on the commute to function or at the fitness center. Not just that, we could browse through and download thousands of documents. We can also videotape our very own record. The downside of this endless digital grab bag is how it can minimize the music itself. Listeners are encouraged to take in as much music as is humanly feasible. Tik Tok's bite-sized snippets, made to consume one-after-another, see this growth in its most extreme, crystalline type. Tik Tok distills the ongoing meme-ification of music, cut and also squeezed to fit our focus periods. Injected into social media sites's communion of performance as well as self-involvement, music is merely fodder for content. Tik Tok's most-used audios loosely correspond with Signboard's Warm 100 chart. The remainder of the clip library responds to just what's hot as well as reproduces it. Take 2018 It Girl Ariana Grande, for example. Along with her hits, blurb from Grande's character on the 2010 Nickelodeon show Triumphant flood the platform. Bazzi's chart-climbing solitary "Mine" is among the best tracks on Tik Tok. So prominent that its universality exceeded the track itself: the opening notes have been recreated as wacky AutoTuned squeals in a brand-new viral blurb. Tik Tok resembles a post-radio maker where you're perpetually skimming networks and they're just the same. The branch of pop music as soon as geared towards radio plays-- the appealing ones intended to hit a nerve hyper-specific to the current moment-- flourishes under this system.
youtube
Exactly what we're entrusted is an ouroboros of recyclable pop stars, a comments loophole in between the possible pop celebrities utilizing the application as well as the megastars whose music is being lip-synced. The equation for success in this overlooked competition doesn't make up musical skill. Music, in a feeling, is repurposed for customers' individual brands. However, prominent customers-- frequently revered for the attitude, sense of rhythm, trendy closet, as well as face balance they offer already-existing songs-- have actually gone on to rack up record offers. On the planet of Tik Tok, risks are low, yet the benefits are high. A Tik Tok customer plays both candidate and judge on this figurative game program, carrying out from a platform and also deciding that of their equivalents to support. It's American Idolizer, yet nobody is vocal singing and also the program isn't confined to a regular hour-long time block. Contestants have just a few secs to stand apart as well as for a little while stop briefly the unlimited scroll they're competing with. First impressions are whatever. Top place owners win a foot in the music and entertainment industries, together with the successful benefits of being social media influencer. Seventeen-year-old Ariel Rebecca Martin, called Baby Ariel, signed with Innovative Artists Company in 2016 as well as launched her debut solitary "Aww" the list below year. It's not bad; it has the familiar circulation of a generic 2010s pop song and the music video, which has actually been seen over 44 million times, features adorable youngsters, charming animals, as well as Infant Ariel sporting fashionable clothing. This previous January, she shared her next solitary "Perf," followed by "Gucci On My Body" in June. She won the Teen Option Award for "Selection Muser"-- "Muser" was the portmanteau term for Musical.ly individuals-- in 2016 as well as 2017 and also is amongst Time's a lot of prominent individuals on the web, as well as Forbes' 2017 list of top enjoyment influencers. The iHeartRadio Music Honors additionally has a "Muser of the Year" group, for which Infant Ariel was nominated. She has over 26 million followers on Tik Tok, 8.8 million on Instagram, as well as greater than 3 million subscribers on YouTube. Signing Up With Baby Ariel on the conveyor belt to fame is 16-year-old Loren Gray Beech. The recent Virgin Records signee's only publicly documented attempt at producing music is an Auto-Tuned cover of Dua Lipa's "New Policy" on YouTube. At the same time, 3rd as well as second area Tik Tok users are recruited to content production companies like Flighthouse and Picture Studio. Flighthouse's Chief Executive Officer is 19 years of ages. He collaborates with the media brand's moms and dad company Produce Music Team and also their Chief Executive Officer, who called Flighthouse "this generation's MTV as well as Nickelodeon." Along with pop songs, these teams generate funny illustrations, dancing tutorials, and vlogs. To call music a mainly irrelevant facet of "this generation's MTV" would be both exact and stark. Today, home entertainment relies on its viral possibility. The genuine MTV has also refocused its programming with this in mind. "The means we are thinking about TRL is not as a one-hour program, [yet], preferably, 10 viral moments," MTV president Chris McCarthy told Rapid Business in a meeting. Yet traditional success has constantly been linked to some kind of virality-- an artist's capability to reverberate with a broad target market. Traditional charm and also sense of rhythm typically aren't new consider this formula. Tik Tok simply amplifies the equation with "improving" face filters, streamlined video editing, and also pitch-shifting. The product is a new kind of pop star, shaped by net trends and crafted for online consumption. The rise of playlists anticipated the once-crucial beginning factor in an artist's ascent to fame: a launching album. A punchy appeal a popular Spotify playlist suffices to place you on the map (see: Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow," which exploded after appearing on Apple Music's curated playlist The A-List: Hip-Hop as well as Spotify's RapCaviar). Victor Luckerson sums this for The Ringer: "Music fans are progressively opting to arrange their paying attention around ear-catching minutes, in playlists, as opposed to sifting through hr long cds to excavate their favored tracks." Tik Tok's limitless scroll presses the playlist right into a stream of these hit-making moments. The playlist pop star led the way for the Tik Tok pop star, that-- in addition to passing up full-length albums-- price cuts one more characteristically crucial element: making music. A Tik Tok-bred artist could be compared to the old-time industry-plant pop star. That's to state Britney Spears was born with even more skill compared to lip-syncing Child Ariel? The longstanding industry-plant objection is the assumed insincerity of a musician molded to generate income from. However Tik Tok users are one action ahead: They have actually been honing their star high quality because they downloaded and install the app. A Tik Tok individual is a content designer, a social media influencer. And the influencer-pop star crossover was unpreventable. Instagram is loaded with lovely preference manufacturers trying to find their next job. The shift is even more seamless, and also anticipated, on a "music" application. This isn't really to disavow the ability and creativity involved in creating viral content. At its best, Tik Tok provides a room for youngsters to reveal themselves. Aspiring professional dancers as well as artists can construct followings as well as seek what delights them. The concern is the area this particular sort of aspiring pop star occupies within the already-saturated music round. Under contemporary industrialism, lots of talented musicians are devalued, discouraged, and evaluated of a sector that significantly favors the star over the artist and also revenue over creative thinking. Jazz shed its mainstream momentum decades earlier, and rock gets on its final legs. This isn't really a bad point, necessarily. The styles continue to thrive within their particular niches. Still, when internet candy is packaged and marketed as music, it's simple to picture a future overrun by brainless, homogeneous pop. Individuals desire pop celebrities they can project themselves and also their wishes into. The Tik Tok pop star-- airbrushed and existing on your display-- is the excellent solution, one action listed below cyborg.

Ramblings: Thoughts on Marner, Point, Scherbak, Puljujarvi, Hutton, Hart, Nylander and Schmaltz (Aug 13)
Ramblings: Thoughts on Marner, Point, Scherbak, Puljujarvi, Hutton, Hart, Nylander and Schmaltz (Aug 13)
***
The Fantasy Guide was released on August 1 and has already been updated three times since. The last being August 8 when I put rookie indicators in the draft list and added UFA notes to the Guide. Buy the 13th annual Fantasy Guide here. These little August updates I do just to keep things fresh until September hits and training camps start and the real updates start flying in. Long-time readers will know that I’m all over these, you can count on me.
Mitch Marner versus Brayden Point? Wow…this one caught me completely off guard on Twitter last week when someone asked that and I found the question very odd because the answer was so obvious. But when I publicized my Tweeted response it turns out that the answer really wasn’t obvious at all. There are people there who worship at the altar of Point! Recency bias at its best right there. Sometimes fantasy owners can get completely blinded by it. Thankfully, there is me here to educate!
Before I begin, I want to make one thing absolutely clear before all the Point lovers start piling it on me. I like Point. I’ve always liked Point, I even had him ranked sixth in the Fantasy Prospects Report (the rankings for that month you can find here – June of 2016). I got emails saying I overrated him in the FPR, but I explained that he was a sure-fire NHLer, strong likelihood of scoring line, will make the NHL sooner than you think, and just a very safe keeper pick all around. (As an aside, you can see Marner at No.3 on that same list, but not my point)
Point made a big splash that season with 40 points in 68 games, and he jumped to the next level last year with 66 points. Marner made similar strides, debuting at 61 and then 69 points. A lot of poolies who don’t follow careers and trends from the age of 17 onward, but instead just see the NHL data, can fall victim to this. Point had an upside in the FPR that year of 80+ points. So there is still room for more out of him still. But right now he is perfectly on track for what I envisioned him to be – a guy who seems to have a 60-point floor, an 80-point ceiling (maybe a tad higher) on a great team. Until he hits his prime, he’s probably going to hover around 65 to 70 points. Everything he’s doing and has done so far is pointing to this. I love it when prospects follow nice trajectories like that. It leaves little doubt. At least in my OCD logical mind. And he can reach his upside with a little help from great linemates.
Marner is also following his trajectory perfectly. Everything is hitting the right notes at the exact time I would want to see it. I had him in that 2016 FPR at a 90-point ceiling and 76-point 3YP. That’s extremely high for a 3YP on a prospect, I almost never do that with a player and this is because I was extremely bullish about him. This was his upside before Tavares was even being dreamed about by Toronto fans. With Tavares there, oh my goodness this guy could shoot past 95 points. Normally I call Marner the driver – and I still might. He doesn’t need the help of great linemates because he is the great linemate. But with Tavares there, you have two drivers.
So to me, when I was asked that question, I felt the answer was as obvious as the nose on Brad Marchand’s face. Marner is on track to regularly reach levels that maybe 10 other players hit. Point is on track to regularly reach levels that maybe 50 other players hit. So you have your answer. And then you factor in Tavares on top of the obvious answer that you should already have reached and it’s just a no-brainer.
*
I really like what the Sabres did this offseason and honestly, doesn’t everyone? Most fans were disappointed by what Buffalo produced last season because they had been expected to take a step forward in their rebuilding and instead they somehow went backwards. This time they add Rasmus Dahlin, Jeff Skinner, Casey Mittelstadt, Carter Hutton and Patrik Berglund among others, losing only Ryan O’Reilly. So is this enough to make them a winning team? I think this makes them an 80- or even an 85-point team, which makes Hutton a potential 30-win goalie. Will Phil Housley ride him like a true No.1? That’s the main question. The secondary question – will he be another Scott Darling? Hutton has had a 40-game season before, but that was in 2014. I think there will be some growing pains here, and the situation reminds me a lot of Edmonton’s back when Cam Talbot arrived. He had a horrible start and Anders Nilsson seized the starting role for a month or so. But Talbot took it back and a big reason is because he was paid to do so. He had the contract and was crowned starting goalie, and when a team does that – then he’s getting all the possible starts. And as you saw with Carolina (and St. Louis) last season, they will keep giving the goalie starts even at the cost of making the playoffs. If you’re deemed to be the starter, amid much fanfare (and dollars) – then you’re getting the starts. Long story short, although Linus Ullmark is a good goaltender and perhaps he is even better than Hutton – he’s not going to take the starting job. Not this year, and probably not ever. Long term there might be something with Ullmark as a future starter somewhere, but for this year and likely next, his odds are slim.
*
A couple of you asked me about where I think William Nylander falls in terms of his AAV. And everything I’ve heard about negotiations is that he wants a long-term contract. And frankly the Leafs would be crazy not to go along with that.  He’s certainly going to exceed $6 million, so the question on your mind is likely – will he reach $8 million? Here’s what I think. If he signs for five years, then they may be able to get him for $6.25. If he signs for eight years, then you’re probably looking at an AAV of $8. I’ll come in south of the middle with my guess and say six years and $6.75 AAV.
*
How should you treat Restricted Free Agents when it comes to drafting them? I would treat them as if they’ve signed, because they will. A player holding out is so rare these days, you may see one this year at the most. RFAs of note: Noah Hanifin, Ondrej Kase, Sam Reinhart, Nick Ritchie, Shea Theodore, Josh Morrissey, Darnell Nurse and of course Nylander.
Jordan Schmaltz is another interesting one because you just know he’s going to be pushing for not only a one-way deal, but one with a big enough cap hit that it helps his chances of getting into the lineup regularly. His qualifying offer was for $1 million and I’m assuming was a two-way Q.O.  He’s probably hoping to get just that in a one-way deal, whereas the team is probably okay with giving him a one-way deal, but would probably want him to take less to do it – maybe $750,000. If he signs for a number like that, than he may as well be on a two-way deal because teams have no problem with burying a contract like that in the minors. At $1 million the team hesitates a little longer and gives the player more leash.
*
If Erik Karlsson gets traded I think Thomas Chabot tops 45 points. If he sticks around until Christmas then my expectation for Chabot is closer to 35. He’s Ottawa’s second-best PP QB option right now, even over Chris Wideman.
Another young defenseman, Sam Girard, is in a different situation and has a different kind of skill set. I think he’ll need to be eased into the role as Tyson Barrie’s heir apparent. I’d expect baby steps this year and next, perhaps a trajectory similar to Ryan Ellis (though without the injuries).
*
These are questions I received on Twitter Sunday, by the way. Someone asked for my opinion on Nikita Scherbak and Carter Hart. Scherbak is a skilled player with second-line upside and perhaps he could even be a first liner on a weak team such as Montreal. But he gets hurt too often. He’s been hurt more often than healthy ever since he turned pro and I don’t have very high hopes for him. But he’s on the team that needs his skill set the most. If he could just string together 80 games then he could surprise this year. But there’s no way I would bet even $10 bucks on that.
As for Carter Hart, I guess what’s really being asked here is – “Hey, next summer Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth both become free agents, so will Carter Hart be the No.1 guy?” I certainly think that’s possible, even though it’s rare these days to see a 21-year-old grab the reins like that. Carey Price is the last one I can think of – and that goes for 22 and 23-year-olds as well. I think the Flyers will have a good year and if Elliott can play 50 games (he hasn’t done that in seven years though), then the team may re-sign him for two years. In which case, Hart would become the backup goalie in the middle of 2019-20 and then by the middle of 2020-21 he’ll take over as the starter. That puts his wait time at 1.5 years until the NHL, and 2.5 years until he actually helps you in fantasy. That being said, both Elliott and Neuvirth are injury prone and Alex Lyon has to clear waivers to be sent down – so I’m curious to see what he does as the likely No.3 goalie for this season.
*
Jesse Puljujarvi. A victim of being drafted too high. Had he been drafted 12th overall in 2016 most fantasy owners would consider him a top prospect to own. Before his 20th birthday, he played his 93rd NHL game and scored his 13th career goal. What were you looking for, exactly? As I outlined in the Fantasy Guide, Puljujarvi took on much tougher minutes last season, possibly the toughest among forwards in terms of not seeing strict offensive zone starts and facing stronger competition. And he came away smelling like roses. What’s more, his 5on5 S% indicated that he was the victim of tough puck luck in terms of putting points on the board. So as a 19 year old he was one of the rare defensively responsible Oilers and even though his teammates shot just 6.6% when he was on the ice, he still got 20 points in 68 games. I think he is a safe bet for 35 points this year and has an outside shot at 55. My long-term projections for him remain exactly where they always were and consider him a serious buy-low in keeper leagues.

Justin Herbert’s leadership is this NFL Draft’s most absurd criticism
Tumblr media
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Justin Herbert has provided plenty of proof that he’s a leader, but draft types love to nitpick.
Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert was surprisingly honest when asked about his pro readiness at the NFL Combine. Instead of delivering the “I’m the best quarterback in the class” bravado that has become common among prospects, Herbert was realistic about his capabilities.
“I’ve never played a down in the NFL,” Herbert told reporters, via NBC Sports.
— Get Up (@GetUpESPN) February 26, 2020
He’s a changed man, and he’s ready for the @NFL. We caught up with Justin Herbert during the first few days of the NFL Combine. pic.twitter.com/sszaPPGWWM
— Pac-12 Network (@Pac12Network) February 26, 2020
Because it’s anonymous scout season.

Ramblings: Keeper Bubble Players – my dilemmas, your dilemmas, let’s hash this out (July23)
Working hard on the Fantasy Guide. It’s out on August 1 but you can always pre-order it. I’m about halfway through now. Two weeks to do the first half, eight days to do the second half. Just another year in Fantasy Guide Land.
*
Welcome to DobberHockey’s first annual Keeper Bubble Week. I took the deadest week of the summer and factored in that many leagues have their keeper deadlines fast approaching, and decided to have all the columnists dedicate their work and analysis to a single theme – the bubble players. Keep ‘em or drop ‘em? I’ll get to those below. First, let’s take a quick look around the hockey world…
*
You may recall a few weeks ago when I discussed players who have babies and the impact that it has on their season, particularly with their second child (link on that is here). Getzlaf was a great example – his season after his second baby was terrible. Last year Cam Talbot’s wife had twins. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on what happened to him in 2017-18 after that. Further to this, guess who had a baby on the weekend? Alex Pietrangelo. Guess who else had a baby? Alex Pietrangelo. Also, guess who had a baby on the weekend? Alex Pietrangelo. I’m not repeating myself, the guy actually welcomed triplets into the world! Congratulations to the Pietrangelo family, but let’s look at this from a fantasy hockey standpoint – if you think having three infants in the house in August, September and October will have no impact on his training schedule, then you’ve never had kids.
Look at this way – if Pietrangelo has a great season in 2018-19, then we’ll know he’s a pretty neglectful father! All kidding aside, I think even with a nanny to help, you still love your kids and you want to spend time with them especially during the first few months. It’s going to have an impact. I haven’t reviewed St. Louis yet, but whatever my formula pits out for Pietrangelo, I’m rolling it back an additional five or six points (and just hope it doesn’t get any worse than that).
*
Jacob Trouba was awarded $5.5 million in arbitration on a one-year deal. He becomes the second highest paid defenseman on the Jets. If feel more bullish about him if he didn’t miss at least 17 games in four of his last five seasons. He saw the second most ice time on the entire team last season (average per game), but was third on the totem pole behind Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers in terms of PP time. Now that he’s making more than Myers and the Jets could lose Myers to free agency next year, I think you’ll see that flip-flop. Trouba’s PP time should get a boost. If only I could feel comfortable projecting 80 games out of the guy, I’d feel so much better about him.
*
ANNOUNCEMENT: The Frozen Tools upgrade has completed the next big step. The Report Generator is now up. Instant load. All the reports. Take a look here. Get any data you want, and we’re taking suggestions on more in the forum. If there’s info you need and we don’t have it – we’ll get it.

BUBBLE WEEK!
First, my three leagues. Three different sets of rules, three different strategies, I’ll offer up my thinking.
LEAGUE 1 – Entering its 29th season. The most basic of my leagues – 20 players, 13 teams, keep everyone, top 12 players for points counts, points get traded with the player, and keep the same rosters for the NHL postseason where again the top 12 players count.
I pick 10th and 23rd. Team: Ovechkin, Marchand, Backstrom, Panarin, Granlund, Marchessault, Arvidsson, Tolvanen, Drouin, Zucker, Labanc, Atkinson, Johnson, Palat, Kovalchuk, Coyle, Killorn, Koivu, Marleau, Spezza
Bubble players: Killorn, Koivu, Marleau and Spezza
Decision: This one is obvious because I already set up my team for the draft back at the trade deadline. Marleau was acquired strictly for playoffs (which I won) and Spezza was a throw-in. Those two are gone. Sure, Marleau could get 45 points on this upgraded Toronto team, but so can Killorn and I think Killorn has more upside and is younger. Koivu also has more upside, though if there was a draft pick available and a player I like at the draft I’d be very comfortable just dropping Koivu and making the pick.
LEAGUE 2 – The ‘Forecaster’ League, with the group that puts together the magazine. I joined it in 2008 and won three straight from I think it was 2012-2014. But haven’t won in a bit. This one is Keep 12, points-only but extra bonus for Hits, SOG and PPPts. No playoffs. Regular hockey rosters (4C, 8W, 6D, 2G 4 bench, IR). I have lots of draft picks, all in the first 8 rounds.
Keeping: MacKinnon, Johansen, Granlund, W. Karlsson, Keller, Carlson, Klingberg, Gardiner, Talbot, Bishop, Hellebuyck.
Already dropped: Wennberg, Maroon, Aberg, Koivu, Gaudette, Little, Valimaki, Oleksiak, Ferland, Petersen.
Bubble: Atkinson, E. Lindholm, Montour for the final Keeper.
Other assets: L. Andersson, Frost, Heinen, Matheson, Tuch
Strategy – First of all, I have an Excel file that each of you should also have. It lists my players – each league has its own tab. And the players are listed in order of their value to me. At a quick glance I can always evaluate what I can afford to give up. It’s just a great way to evaluate your situation.
Second, I hate dropping players. If possible, I try to use them as sweeteners to other deals. Short of that, if a player is on the bubble I might be fine with trading a keeper for a draft pick, and replace that keeper with a bubble player. And that’s what I did here. I received an offer of a fifth round pick for Jake Gardiner. I had him upgrade the pick to the fourth round and did the deal. Brandon Montour has now been moved from the “Bubble” section to the “Keeping” section. I’ve already done Anaheim in the Guide and can tell you that I projected 41 points for him. I’m guessing Gardiner will be low-50s when I get to the Leafs. But Montour had 27 more shots, 45 more hits and three fewer PPPts. I’m guessing all three of those numbers get better for Montour in the year ahead and according to our league rules, the guess is that these two players will turn out to be equal or pretty close to it. And I just gained a fourth.
Now I have to choose between Cam Atkinson and Elias Lindholm, who I firmly believe will be Johnny Hockey’s new linemate. Atkinson had 33 points in his last 33 games and he’ll have a great season with Artemi Panarin. However, Panarin is looking like he’ll be traded. Furthermore, Atkinson’s value is hidden. As in – nobody is going to draft him in the first round. I can drop him and then draft him in the second round (if Panarin stays) or the fourth round (if Panarin is traded). So that’s my plan. But until that point, I’ll be trying to work in a trade. I hate wasting assets.
LEAGUE 3 – Keep everyone, rosters are 33 players, 15-team league, top 12 forwards, top 4 defensemen, top 2 goalies count for points-only.
I’m not going to list my roster as it’s too big. I’ll just reiterate that I hate just dropping a guy. I’ll have no choice on two obvious ones in Nathan Beaulieu and Nick Bonino. But other players I didn’t like I felt I could get something for them. First I traded Jordan Staal and Richard Panik for third- and fourth-round picks (it’s a four-round draft). Staal is Staal – you know exactly what you’re getting and that’s not going to get better or worse anytime soon. Panik is a wildcard. He’s averaged 40 points the last two seasons and he’s 27 years old. But he had 15 points in the last 20 games and Arizona has a good-looking top nine now. I have in the Fantasy Guide 42 points for Panik, with line combos that look like this:
Panik – Derek Stepan – Clayton Keller
Christian Fischer – Alex Galchenyuk – Vinnie Hinostroza
Brendan Perlini – Christian Dvorak – Michael Grabner
Because I don’t think Panik’s upside is any higher than 60 points at best, getting a third for him I felt was good value. Especially when I’m the one using the pick. My last few third rounders: Lehkonen (2017), Sheary (2017), Brossoit (2017), DeBrincat (2017), Grimaldi (2016), Gostisbehere (2016). That’s not a bad track record, even with the warts!
Then I traded Aaron Dell, Lars Eller and Jordan Weal. All three were on the bubble for me – and now all three are off my team. I got a second and a third for them. I had been hoping Dell would sign with Detroit or Buffalo and as soon as he signed with San Jose, I didn’t want him anymore. Martin Jones just starts his new contract this season, so he’s locked in no matter how bad he is (I think he’s bad). Eller’s best years are still ahead of him, in my opinion, but that’s not saying much. I think he’ll get 40 points this year, but with upside for 55 if Kuznetsov or Backstrom get hurt for 20 games or more. We’ve seen him flourish when he sneaks onto that top PP unit. As for Weal, I just didn’t like his chances. I haven’t given up all hope as he always seems to overachieve and I really like those players. But I can do better with a good draft pick and his inclusion helped me get a second rounder instead of another third.
The last move I made (so far) was actually going the other way. But only because there was a deal to be had. A GM made his bubble players available and I took a stab at getting two of his best for my lowest draft pick (a future fourth rounder). That got me Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Samuel Montembeault. I think I would draft JAD in the third round in September, so that’s a deal right there. And Montembeault is a bubble player – I’d probably draft him fourth, but that’s not set in stone and dependent on the goalie options out there. I like Montembeault but he’s three years away at least. Two years of no help at all, followed by a year or two as a backup. And that’s if it works out.
Jaret Anderson-Dolan (more on him here) is a sure-fire NHLer. But will he be second-line 60-point guy with upside for 70? Or a third-line 45-point guy? I don’t think he has a long wait time. Maybe a year away. I like that about him.
*
I went to Twitter for your Bubble questions. A bubble player varies from league to league, but when you start having to decide between Tarasenko and Voracek, or Draisaitl vs. Pastrnak – I don’t consider it a keeper league! There’s no wrong answer! Try flipping a coin. (Note: I answered these ones right on Twitter)
If your league is a Keep 3, a Keep 5, or even a Keep 8 – to me that’s a one-year league where you get to hold onto a couple of guys. True keeper leagues allow you to actually recognize your roster from one year to the next because you get to keep 10, 12, 15, 20 or even all of your players. Keeper leagues!
With that in mind, here are some Twitter queries:
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none" data-cards="hidden" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Who’s got a better likelyhood of holding a top six spot, Beauvillier or Athanasiou?</p>— Barry Miles (@barryhmiles) <a href="https://twitter.com/barryhmiles/status/1021168514659385345?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 22, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
Athanasiou’s fancy stats indicate that he can really make an impact and put up first-line points on Detroit, perhaps even better than Gustav Nyquist. And he probably deserves that spot over Nyquist. But zero chance that happens. This is another stepping-stone year for Athanasiou. So my answer is Anthony Beauvillier. If Jan Kovar fails to make things happen in the NHL as a top sixer, then Beauvillier will get his chance. And then, whether or not he makes that chance work is up to him. If Kovar clicks, then Beauvillier is a depth guy again. So in that sense, Athanasiou is a safer play. I have Athanasiou for 42 points. Nice and safe. So this question becomes – do you want safe, or do you want to swing for the fences?

Eric Staal and Ryan O’Reilly are the obvious keeps. I like Derek Stepan and Josh Bailey over the other forwards there. I already spoke about Weber. I believe Bailey will get the star treatment now that he’s coming off a big year, even losing Tavares I think he’s still safe for 55 points. A contract like the one he signed will see to it that he gets optimal linemates and PP time. And Stepan has a great supporting cast around him and is safe for 52-55 points. However, if you are hurting for goalies, then you have to keep Henrik Lundqvist over Stepan. But if you have two other good ones, then King Henrik can go.

I like these choices as it embraces three players who ‘could’ break out in the year ahead. But I am the most bullish on Elias Lindholm so that’s my selection here.

This one is only close because Jake Virtanen has so much potential in terms of hits. I would still keep Timo Meier here.

This one is incredibly hard. And I’m only looking at the defensemen here, as they are harder to replace in-season. So between Mike Matheson – huge upside and I’m so very certain he will eventually get there, but it will be another ‘stepping stone’ year for him (projection: 35 points). Nick Hanifin – on a new team, steadily improving, should be a safe play for low-40s (I project him for 44 this year), but doesn’t have Matheson’s upside. Oscar Klefbom – still Edmonton’s only option for PP QB and could ‘get it’ at any moment (projection: 38 points for this season). I think my two picks here will be Matheson and Hanifin – one for immediate results and the other for future results.

One more note – I’m hard at work on the Guide, so once again I’m late with the Goalie Rankings. They’ll be out in early August.

Do 2018 college football recruits even remember your team's last national title?
To a 17-year-old athlete, what your team did more than a decade or so ago might be ancient history.
Jan 1, 2000. If you’re a college football recruit in the class of 2018, that is roughly the average of when you were born. You were a Y2K baby. And the lens through which current recruits view college football is far different than the average fan.
Two things recently hammered home this point for me.
First, I was chatting up the college position coach of an All-Pro linebacker and made the comment that it has to help him in recruiting. Surprisingly, he said not much.
“They don’t know shit,” he said of current recruits. “And I don’t think they read about the past greats, or watch replays of them like we did, either. They don’t watch as many games going on now, either. If we don’t tell them, they don’t know.”
Some recruits, like five-star linebacker Shane Lee have told us that they don’t even watch current football on TV.
The second is this tweet exchange from four-star receiver Ja’Marr Chase, of Metairie (La.).
An elite receiver recruit had no idea who Peter Warrick was.
Yup, an elite receiver recruit had never heard of FSU legend Peter Warrick and was seeing him for the first time thanks to a highlight video. He then guesses that Warrick played “way before my time.”
In that regard, Chase was right. Warrick, one of the best college players of the last two decades, played his entire college career before between 1996-99, before Chase was born.
Colleges go to great lengths to market their tradition, but there is no substitute for a real memory of having seen a player or team succeed live. Let’s look at college football history through the eyes of current recruits.
Recruits were not born when Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, or Tennessee last won a national title.
For most reading this, those things did not happen all that long ago. But these things happened anywhere from two to 20 years before current recruits were even born.
Ditto the Heisman winners like Charles Woodson, Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne, Danny Wuerffel, Eddie George, Charlie Ward, Desmond Howard, Barry Sanders, and Bo Jackson: well before the birth of the class of 2018.
Sure, kids could go back and watch YouTube highlights in standard def, just like older people could go back and watch black-and-white videos of Billy Cannon’s punt return. But that’s not a memory formed through experience.
They are too young to remember watching Oklahoma, Miami, and USC win titles.
Kids don’t really remember things from when they are small, thanks to a phenomenon known as childhood amnesia. Some research suggests this exists for memories formed up until the age of 7 are generally lost. But to be safe, let’s focus on what happened before they entered elementary school.
From a college football perspective, a lot happened between 2000 and 2004. Miami, Oklahoma, and USC ended title droughts of 10, 15, and 25 years, respectively. And none has won one since.
Recruits do not remember those games, nor do they remember college greats from those teams like Torrance Marshall, Josh Heupel, Jonathan Vilma, Ken Dorsey, Willis McGahee, Jeremy Shockey, LenDale White, Matt Leinart, or Shaun Cody, unless they remember their NFL careers.
And few of the players drafted during that time are still in the NFL, either. I found fewer than 10 from the 2000-02 drafts.
Imagine being a coach at one of those historic powers and explaining that no joke, we actually have recently won a title at Miami/Oklahoma/Tennessee/Michigan/Nebraska, and then looking at a kid as he decides whether to believe you without Googling it.
They may have some memory of seeing Texas, Florida, or LSU win a title.
It’s possible that an elite recruit in Dallas watched Vince Young to put Texas over USC during his kindergarten year, but I seriously doubt most recruits could name the last time Texas won a title. Almost all of their college football cognitive existence has involved hardware being taken home by East Coast schools, mostly in the Southeast.
Anecdotally, kids do seem more likely to remember individual stars from their time in elementary school (2005-10). They seem to remember Tim Tebow for what he did at Florida or Patrick Petersen at LSU. And most of the quarterbacks we speak with do seem to vividly remember Cam Netwon, not just with the Panthers, but with Auburn.
The formative years have been dominated by Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, and Clemson.
The Tide took home back-to-back championships in 2011-12. FSU broke the SEC’s seven-year streak by winning in 2013. Ohio State followed in 2014, Alabama won another in 2015, and Clemson broke a 35-year drought by winning in 2016.
Since the current class of recruits entered middle school in 2011, only those four programs have won titles. They are also the only four FBS schools with a winning percentage above .800 in that span, and have produced two Heisman winners in that time (Jameis Winston and Derrick Henry).
Those four schools are whom current recruits have grown up with as the best during their most formative years.
Current recruits are also the group that has been the most inspired by minority-ethnicity quarterbacks getting football’s highest recognition; seven of the last 11 Heisman winners have been minority quarterbacks, a newly emerging trend.
Texas and Tennessee have been the most lackluster of the prestige programs since current recruits entered middle school, with Auburn and Miami not far behind.
The Vols check in at 40-35 in that span, while Texas is one win better at 41-35. Auburn is 46-32, which is surprising until you realize that the Tigers won the title with Cam Newton the year before the class of 2018 entered middle school. And Miami is just 45-31 in that span, with no division titles.
