hi!!! could you maybe recommend me some books/sources of information on how jedi order works?? wookieepedia is a little overwhelming to me lmao, and i kinda wanted to plan a fic about crèche master anakin, but that requires a lot of information about how raising younglings and clans work, more than i know at the moment!! thank you!

Hi!  I have a meta guide for everything we know about the Jedi in canon here: Taking a Closer Look at the Jedi Order in Star Wars Canon [Meta/Reference Guide] You’ll find the most in chapters 3 and 4, which is really only a handful of mentions about the creche (you can just ctrl+F for mentions, if you want)--the problem is that there really isn’t any book or source of information on how the Jedi Order works. This area of worldbuilding has really been done almost nothing with it, especially because there are two separate continuities, where you have Canon and you have Legends.  Legends probably has more details, but it’s always been non-canon to George Lucas’ Star Wars and so it really just kind of did its own thing (which often led to some amazing stories! Legends is a continuity that has a ton of value and meaning to people! but it also often contradicted what the Jedi were actually like because much of it was created pre-Attack of the Clones, so there weren’t even the three main movies out yet, much less The Clone Wars being out), which means you’re absolutely free to use it, but be wary of how it’s not always consistent. There’s not really even a source of information on what the Force feels like or how it works, aside from the interviews George Lucas has given on these things, which likely informs how canon attempts to treat these things, as they’ve said they’re trying to stay true to his themes now (for example--Legends often had “grey Force users” being stable, but canon now works according to George’s statements of how that’s not possible, the dark side corrupts, you have to actively resist it or you’ll fall to it), because not much worldbuilding has been done on this aspect of them. Instead, you have to piece together what we get in bits and bobs in the canon, which is what I’ve done with the above.  If you want, you can read stuff like the Jedi Apprentice books, but they’re pretty firmly not canon anymore (like they had an age limit of 13, which has been overwritten by canon, where Ahsoka was 14 when she became a Padawan, there was a youngling in Dooku: Jedi Lost who was 16 and indicated they’d have to wait another year, there was no indication of impending age limit, even in Legends there was a book that had a 17 year old initiate who would have to keep trying) and so, again, you’re pretty free to make up whatever you like about the way Jedi creches work. The few things we do know, as mentioned in the above link: - On arrival at the Temple, Initiates are sorted into clans to help them foster trust and kinship. [Dooku: Jedi Lost] - When a Jedi youngling becomes a Padawan, they seem to go from the creche to partnering with their Master, though, first there are conversations with the crechemaster and the Master at some point:    Obi-Wan said, “You know, I never had problems with that as a youngling. Being independent, I mean. I broke rules right and left. They even called me rebellious. Probably the Masters were surprised anyone was willing to take me on as an apprentice.”  In fact, Qui-Gon had been warned about this very thing. He’d long since assumed that the crèche masters’ concern was overcautious. [Master and Apprentice] - Yaddle spends at least some time in the creche, whether regularly or they have rotating ones, is anyone’s guess, but she was there when Qui-Gon was a youngling:       “Only yesterday, Dooku had chosen [Qui-Gon] as Padawan. He’d spent his last night in the younglings’ crèche laughing with his friends, imagining all the adventures he would have, and practicing with his lightsaber in the sparring room until Master Yaddle ordered him to bed.“  [Master and Apprentice] - They teach the younglings about the Force there:    “Qui-Gon whispered, “The dark side?” He knew it was a thing all beings carried within them, a part of himself he would learn to guard against—the crèche masters had taught him all that. But it still sounded a little like some kind of ghost or monster, a mysterious thing that would leap out from the shadows to get you when you weren’t looking.” [Master and Apprentice], which is a direct echo of George Lucas explaining the Force: “ Only way to overcome the dark side is through discipline. The dark side is pleasure, biological and temporary and easy to achieve. The light side is joy, everlasting and difficult to achieve.”  (George Lucas, Clone Wars writers meeting) - These bonds do seem to be significant, to at the very least some degree, as Obi-Wan thinks of his “creche-mate” even when he’s 17, indicating that possibly they’re often lifelong friends:       Obi-Wan’s crèche-mate Prie, for instance, had been partnered with a Master who was expert in two things [....] [Master and Apprentice] - The younglings in the creche seem to sleep near each other (I have a personal headcanon that they sleep in piles, all cuddled up with each other, because Space Psychics) because they seem to often gossip with each other night by candle droid:  In Dooku: Jedi Lost there is a gossip story passed around about a possibly expelled Padawan long ago, one that keeps getting passed around by Initiates telling stories by glow lanterns at night, which indicates that it’s considered juicy enough/surprising enough that it doesn’t seem to happen much/if at all. - We do see Yoda and Tera Sinube teaching classes of younglings as well, so they’re probably familiar to almost every youngling who passes through the creches.  Whether these classes are based on the younglings’ clans or if they’re randomized, we have no idea, though.  I’m assuming that at least some of them were based on clans, because we see Yoda teaching Bear Clan in Attack of the Clones, which also gives us an indication of the size of them--probably somewhere between four and eight.

We also see in Dooku: Jedi Lost that Dooku was part of the Hawk-Bat Clan, which often did things together, that Dooku spent time with Thranta Clan, while Tera Sinube spent more time with Heliost Clan. It’s probably reasonable to assume that the Jedi younglings from “The Gathering” are a clan as well, showing that they do things together fairly often:

Though, we see two other younglings there and Ganodi doesn’t seem to be part of the group, assuming that that’s Gungi, Byph, Petro, and Zatt with her.  But we do see Tera Sinube spending time with them here and again later, when they’re practicing with their lightsabers:

Though, again, we see more than just that one clan--unless the two other younglings are part of their clan and just weren’t on that specific trip to Ilum with the others?  Entirely possible there, too. But that’s it, that’s all we know.  Anything else isn’t canon/never really was and can be fun to use, but I often find it doesn’t really fit well with what we’re shown in The Clone Wars or with George’s themes for SW. I think it makes sense, though, that it works like a communal society, where there are crechemasters who look after the children in their little mini-family clans, helping shepherd them to their classes, who shoo the children to bed at night and take care of them, talk with them about the things they need to know, work to help ease the transition when they become apprentices, etc. (As a note:  If you’re reading Wookieepedia, even on the canon pages, they’ll reference The Jedi Path: A Manual for Students of the Force sometimes, but be wary, as that book is very firmly not canon.  Elements of it may be recanonized, but only what appears in books like Dooku: Jedi Lost, Master and Apprentice, Choose Your Destiny: Obi-Wan & Anakin, Age of the Republic: Obi-Wan Kenobi, etc. are actually canon.)

So i was just daydreaming of SW and fics & i was imagining two characters on opposites sides of light and dark both trying to turn each other bc they think they are right(don’t they all?). But i feel like sidious and maul and plenty of sith knew that they weren’t necessarily the ‘good’ guys, no matter their reason for why they ended up on the dark side. I think sidious knew he wasn’t a good person & was well aware of the ‘bad’ nature of the darkside and how it can corrupt a person entirely 1/

I think dooku was as well even though he thought he was doing the right thing & making change. But how would you convince someone that turned bc they thought they could keep it controlled. Revan himself turned thinking he could prevent the darkside from corrupting him entirely&we see how that turned out. What about people who just genuinely think that they are more free (they aren’t) on the darkside and just want to BE on the darkside and think that it’s not inherently bad. Bc some sith fics make it sound not that bad but we know that it actually really is very bad by nature ¾

I guess my question is how does someone who thinks they can have everything they want and not loose themselves, who is ruled by the dark side to the point of sith eyes, become convinced that going that far isn’t actually the right path to be on? 4/4 Sorry this is so long

Wow, anon, this is…a complicated question. (And off-topic, but daydreaming about SW fics totally got me through some horrible jobs a few years ago. Star Wars daydreaming ftw.)

For me, it comes down to what your definition of “light” (read, good) is. And I think either side, light or dark, taken too far to one extreme ends up wrapping back to the other, a kind of ouroboros. Too much light, as we saw with the Jedi, can lead to dark consequences. Too much dark, in a weird way, will lead to revolt, to a balancing. 

It’s thermodynamics, taken to a philosophical extent, where your variables seek equilibrium but there is only so much energy to share between them, as it cannot be created nor destroyed. 

But let’s extricate ourselves from such tangled webs, shall we, and take this analysis character by character. 

Sidious: Sidious is an unrepentant, manipulative bastard. I mean, the absolute worst, the whole shebang. I doubt there would be anyone who would have had the ability to pull him into the “Light,” just the ability to thwart his plans. Evil genius, psychopath, bereft of empathy, etc. Let’s just say Rey’s existence, at least from the first generation, was likely not an act of love. 

Dooku: Oh Dooku. My favorite bad guy is a lot more complicated. His motivations were idealistic and to some degree, justified. The Republic and the Jedi were failing certain underrepresented systems, the Republic bloated on corruption and the Jedi more and more backing themselves into a protective corner until they had no room left to move. His execution of the whole thing…well, that’s where his hubris (and nihilism) led him astray. And I still contend we see this darkening of Dooku between AotC and RotS, especially in TCW. The dark side won in Dooku, pulled him under its tide so perhaps by the time of RotS he just wasn’t able to see - or admit - Sidious’s plans for him. 

Now, would Dooku have been redeemed? Yes, but only under circumstances and I would say he would less be redeemed than returned to grey status. 

But what would possibly convince our resident iconoclast to renounce some of his ways? 

Or more, who?

Qui-gon or Obi-wan. Or both. Lineage is so important to Dooku, a man who felt the loss of his family, who felt he was alone in the universe, who, unlike Anakin, went out of his way to avoid close connections, to relieve everything of his past except his title and all the expectations that came with it. I mean, imagine that. You are raised a Jedi, taught to believe attachment is, if not bad, at least problematic. And then you leave that religious order to return to your homeworld where you inherit a title and presumably a million problems and identities and histories that come with said title. And Dooku knows none of these people but to rule them, but he does know the ones he has raised and the ones who they raised. Which leads me to believe that an alive Qui-gon (who, let’s face it, wouldn’t have been 100% light side) and/or a more convinced Obi-wan (who should have listened to Dooku on Geonosis but that is a whole other discussion because that was a Hail Mary by Dooku and the more I think about it, the more I believe it was a ballsy-as-ass move on his part) might have convinced him to realign himself.

Anakin: Ohhhh, Anakin. Anakin, who fell because he felt he had to, in order to save everyone he loved. Anakin, who was burdened with false expectation after a traumatic childhood. Anakin, who made so many bad choices and it’s both his fault and not his fault, a tragic combination of circumstance and proclivity. The thing is, we know Anakin is torn between the light and the dark, even after he turns. Anakin as Vader is kind of like the person who says, “Oh I ate 2 cookies, might as well eat the whole bag because nothing matters.” (Side note, I am a total supporter of eating the whole bag of cookies if that is the heart’s truest desire. Speaking as someone who has downed many bags of cookies in their lifetime.) Anyway, it’s the mindset that’s the problem. And Anakin does redeem himself in the end, when he finds something/someone to fight for and fight against and isn’t that so him, always fighting against something?

Look, dark side characterizations are fun. But there’s always something else behind it, and it is a big deal to abandon your principles, your ideals, your health, your everything to this festering, opaque disease that lives in your deepest gut and at times takes the controls, much to your horror (except if you are Sidious, in which case, the horrible darkness is always at the controls and that is by design). I, personally, like to explore the darker sides of these characters but also the why - what made them fall, why are they hurting, and what is the fallout of their actions?

Yes, it’s easy to hate, to fear - I mean, we see this in the real world on an everyday basis. What’s less easy is to be alone, and I mean truly alone. And I think minus extreme examples like Sidious (who, let’s admit, created clones to cheat death and kept a vast amount of servants so even he was not ever truly alone). If I might get a little existential for a moment, what I like about Jedi philosophy (and in all seriousness, I had a major breakdown about this a few years back and Jedi philosophy, weirdly enough, was a large part in saving my sanity) is that we are never alone, that we are all part of the Force, of life, of the breath and heartbeat of the universe no matter what corporeal form we take or not. The Sith see themselves as alone, but as we can observe, so many of them are motivated by connection, could possibly be spurred to change by connection in the correct circumstances. 

And by this, I don’t mean the Jedi were 100% correct. I feel like the version of the Jedi we got by TCW had been pushed to some extremes due to the Ruusan Reformation (gdi, that had better get recanonized, asap, because it is a pivotal moment and a HUGE explanation of why the Jedi ended up as they were by the time the Prequels rolled around and it makes So Much Sense), the emergence of Dooku, the war, etc.) There is something to be said about the Grey Jedi, not that they necessarily embraced light and dark - but perhaps so - but that they did not fall to one extreme or the other. And this is where I feel Qui-gon succeeded over many other of his peers, despite his myriad of other personality flaws. Possibly this was why he was able to access the Whills and pass on what he had learned, to the point of where we see Yoda in TLJ, who is a lot more philosophical about everything than he had been in life. 

So to answer your question - there is no making someone turn back to the light, as much as there is any way of forcing a sentient being to do anything. Once can only pave the way and forge relationships, and the rest is up to that person. I think a lot of our Sith friends knew they were going down a dark path but also saw no alternative and felt a need to vindicate themselves, to strike out in anger against their circumstances. I get it, I think we all have that urge sometimes. And I suppose the answer might come in having something to fight for as opposed to fight against, as ridiculous as that sounds. 

But then again, I am but a simple lego floating around the internet. :)

So is the RoTS novelization considered Canon? I mean, it is /based/ on a saga movie, but when it was made its still technically a star wars book that falls to the eu category, so???

Im sorry the whole eu deal is really confusing. Sometimes I wish Lucasfilm could just had, like, a whole conference meeting and go through as many eu productions and stuff as possible to discuss canon possibilities, or at least slowly build up a list of old eu/legends that they’ve decided to give an approved-canon stamp or something. I mean, the eu /at least/ deserve some sort of discussion even if it is big and confusing, just to clear out some stuff.

Hi!  It can be confusing until you get the hang of it, yeah!  And it’s still definitely not a value judgement–those old Legends stories can still be great fun and great stories!  They’re just not canon, which means that LF going forward isn’t beholden to including them or their details when putting new stuff out.  That’s the definition we’re working with here–that “canon” means the other authors/creators have to take it into account when creating something new!Okay, so the way LucasFilm canon works is this:- Extended Universe stuff was never really “canon”, George made this very clear in interviews where he said he didn’t read that stuff and it wasn’t part of his Star Wars world, as well as Dave Filoni talked about how, even before the Disney buy, George made it clear that that stuff wasn’t “canon” to him and those working on The Clone Wars.  (This is why TCW contradicts so much of Legends, because it was basically a separate world of stuff that the canon wasn’t beholden to.)  And, frankly, back in the day, the EU stuff was rather Wild West, meaning it was basically anything goes a lot of the time and so it’s probably better to consider it like published fanfiction, imo.- A lot of things from Legends were really influential and popular, so you may see them pop up again (like Thrawn was recanonized, Mace was still Depa’s Master, Shmi was still captured by pirates when she was young, etc.) but not always in the same way, sometimes they’ll be like Thrawn and have entirely new context and histories.  (How we know that some things are still canon because they’ve been mentioned in post-2014 guide books that don’t have the Legends disclaimer.)- Everything previous to April 25, 2014 is now called Legends, EXCEPT for the movies and The Clone Wars.  EVERYTHING.  Everything that came out after that is canon!  EVERYTHING.- I haven’t seen the conversation myself (and last I heard, his twitter auto-deletes itself after a week, so you can’t go looking for old convos) but @glompcat did they mentioned that Pablo Hidalgo specifically mentioned that the movie novelizations (prior to 2014, obv.) were no longer canon and cited the ROTS one as an example, because (fr ex) Anakin would have been thinking about Ahsoka in it, who didn’t exist at the time of ROTS.  While I am personally a little, “….” about that choice (and how I want to pick his brain about it, because of the extenuating circumstances with George’s influence being special to that book) I also recognize that it’s LF’s sandbox and they make their own rules!  So definitely not canon.So!  NOTHING from Legends is still considered canon, anything that is canon will have come up in something post-April 2014 has to be RE-CANONIZED for it to count and then ONLY the parts that are re-canonized (often times with new context!) are what “counts” as canon.Everything else that’s post-April 2014, whether novels or comics or games IS canon.  (One exception might be the LEGO Freemaker series, but IIRC they only said it was canon-COMPLIANT, not that it counted as canon, so I’m hesitant to count that one?  But I’m not wholly sure on that one!)TL;DR VERSION:  If you’re unsure of something, check the original publication date, anything pre-2014.04.25 = NOT CANON, anything post-2014.04.25 = IS CANON, easy peasy!Now, on a personal note, I will give the ROTS novelization more weight in consideration because it was so George-involved, but per LF themselves, no, it’s not canon, it falls under the same Legends banner as everything else does!  You could build up a list, but it’s pretty much just easier to check the original publication date (reprint dates don’t count, only original publication dates/any “this book uses Legends info” disclaimers count) and see which side of the slate wiping it falls onto.  And if something is referenced, ONLY what’s in the post-Disney buy version counts.  (Ie, Shmi was still kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery, but the Pi-Lippa details are no longer canon.  Only what’s specifically in the reference book is what we’re looking at!)(This is also setting aside the issue of how fans choose to interact with Legends stuff on a personal level, which is a whole other conversation!)

hi! you seem really well-versed in sw novel knowledge, so i was wondering if you have any good novel recommendations for obi-wan fans who want to learn more about him? mainly canon ones, but legends can be included too if there are some you really like. sorry if you've gotten this ask before!

Hi!  ♥  There’s not a whole lot of canon novels yet, as they only put out a handful a year and are more focused on the later years of the SW Saga, so I’m going to have to go with a mix here!- I’m not sure there are any canon novels with Obi-Wan playing a direct role, other than maybe Dark Disciple?  Which I haven’t read yet, but some people love that one and some people hate it.  But it is based on future plans for TCW that they never got time to animate, though, and it’s centered around Quinlan Vos and Asajj Ventress.  Oh, but if you want a canon Obi-Wan story, the Obi-Wan & Anakin comic has some really beautiful art and some great character moments!- From a Certain Point of View only has the three stories with Obi-Wan in them (though, he’s a background character in several other stories) but they are STELLAR and worth reading!  The Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Yoda stories all really help give depth and feelings to the story of their lives and some great, great character moments.  Oh, and that one is canon as well!- Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover might still be considered canon given George Lucas’ involvement in line-editing this novelization, and it’s not just an Obi-Wan book, it’s really more of an Anakin book, but it’s great for the Obi-Wan&Anakin feelings re: his character!All the ones after this point are Legends!  There’s not much to Obi-Wan’s character in canon, we know pretty much nothing about him pre-The Phantom Menace except little comments strewn through the movies and TCW, which can be frustrating.  If you’re looking to get to know his canon life, these won’t help you, but if you’re looking for good Obi-Wan Kenobi stories to help potentially get your own view of him into shape or just to enjoy his character, these can be good!- Wild Space by Karen Miller is my go-to rec for Obi-Wan novels, though, it’s Legends it was still written after TCW started, so it ties into the show really well.  Also it’s HILARIOUS and GREAT and the entire first half of the book has great stuff with Anakin and the second half is 100% pure OBI-WAN KENOBI IS A GODDAMNED TANK.  I haven’t read Miller’s other books yet, I doubt they could live up to Wild Space, but they’re probably worth checking out, too!- Rogue Planet by Greg Bear is set in the early days of Obi-Wan and Anakin’s relationship and it’s pure Star Wars weirdness and fantasy/scifi fun!  Living star ships and dangerous races in Coruscant’s underground and Jedi shenanigans, it’s a lot of fun!- Kenobi by John Jackson Miller is a semi-rec, there’s a lot I like in the book and it’s great at giving feelings, but I kind of side eye some of Miller’s undercurrents, they’re not always great at meshing with the actual canon.  But this is a pure Obi-Wan Kenobi story, of his early days on Tatooine, and I do enjoy it for the feelings it gives me!  (Though, it’s less centered on Obi-Wan himself than you might think, it’s only sort of half his story.)- I haven’t read Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn or Labyrinth of Evil by James Luceno yet, but I’ve enjoyed everything else I’ve read from both of them, so I would give a cautious “maybe check those out!” heads up. “Changing Season” by Zahn is a short story set during the Clone Wars that was GREAT, too, if you can find that one!Anti-Recs:  Anything by Karen T raviss because a) she behaved vilely towards people on-line and b) she never read any other SW books while writing hers and came in with a whole lot of really blatant agendas.  The Jedi Apprentice/Jedi Quest series–while they have some great moments, when Watson is on, she’s on, overall they’re not good worldbuilding imo and the people behave terribly in them and they’re incompatible with The Clone Wars, so they end up being really frustrating for me.  I do love the friends Obi-Wan has in them, I’d love to see them recanonized like Thrawn was, so they fit into canon, but I really dislike a lot in those books and people really do not behave in ways that make any kind of sense sometimes.This is all also very personally bent--what I enjoy might be completely different from someone else’s enjoyment.  I know a lot of people really love those JA/JQ novels and their love of them is just as valid as my frustration with them, for example.  Or, say, how I loved the Phasma novel and some people couldn’t stand it!  But I think this is the list that will best help you get the shape of Obi-Wan’s character when it comes to SW novels.  ♥
