more progress on my girl!! REALLY glad i went with fabric for the horns instead of paper mache. finally found a use for that shitty gray fabric too hee hoo

okay sticking the rest of my explanation under the cut because it's long but woooo mini-tutorial for cartoony teeth by someone who doesn't know how to explain things hope you're ready

things that i was too lazy add in but i think are still important:

NEVER be afraid to use references... if you can't figure out what you want, and googling stuff doesn't help, you can even go make faces at yourself in a mirror for a minute.

if you're not drawing in a realistic style, know when to add detail and know when to skip it. you don't usually need to outline each individual tooth unless the focus is on the mouth itself or you're going for a creepy effect... see the uncanny comment in the first slide

okay that's it uhhhh remember i'm not a professional? i just draw silly guys for fun don't take this as law or anything!!! have fun with it!!

#Day 253 #2 Hours 8 Minutes #For years I've wondered about how to ensure people of very dark skin could have lineart work #And I had several theories #I hoped that someday someone would give the answer as a tutorial but I never seen one #So I quick tested several concepts out #I made sure to do this out in the sun to be sure I could still see the lineart clearly in such conditions #The top middle one is me trying to render a bit normally #Because a full render will make it readable like how pics of real people read fine #And then I have a point of comparison of seeing if the flats/simple renders match the feeling of that level of darkness #I also drew the lines as thin as I'm able to be sure it wasn't just my Thick line style that was permitting it to read #So here's about my results #The lighter colors of the skin have two flavors. Reflected light and light impacted by blood #So forehead vs cheeks in this image you can see it best on the render #So I was checking if the cool vs warm vibed more as this person etc in the flats #I consider the jaw to be the mid tone since it seems least impacted by light #But idk if that's how everyone would view it #I tried to see if relative color could make her appear darker as well #But yeah I know the drawing is a bit gunched but I was nyooming #Relying on sunlight is part of it but I can't remember my state of mind #on my desktop monitor my render looks so baaaad #But on tablet when I turn brightness to full (which I do to check that it works on desktops) it seems fine?#Just how bad are my monitor settings...

#my appointment is on friday but i don't think i can do this anymore ibuprofen is doing nothing at this point i'm in so much pain 🥴#and this is 1 of 2 teeth i got treated or at least i thought so?? in october and both were sensitive after removing cavities #and i thought it'd go away and i didnt have time cause i was working but it didnt go away ever and here i am suffering this still 3 months #later and it got so bad i basically can't eat on that side and even that side of my jaw is constantly getting waves of painful impulses #the other tooth is pale in comparison but i'll ask her to check it too this is not normal i'm at the point of thinking of root canal #treatment is the only way even tho she said the cavities weren't so deep and i don't need it?? i am sure i do now 🥲

saw jaws for the first time today and i can’t believe despite knowing so much about it through cultural osmosis i had no clue matt hooper existed and i love that funky little guy

#he’s just autistic about sharks and i love him for it. i forgive him for his crimes (being rich)#also his line about ‘having enough of these working class heroes’ or whatever. i was ready to fight him for that one #i knew about concerned police officer and weird old vaguely threatening fisherman but no one ever mentioned the silly little guy who just.#i knew when every jumpscare happened but i didn’t know one of the three main characters existed #he just loves sharks man. man was so funny. ‘hey i was told to tell you guys that you shouldnt all get in that boat’ ‘we’ll do it anyway’#‘okay! they’re going to die :)’#crazwaz posted #id seen the clip of matt discovering the body and the clip of them paddling to shore at the end!!!#but i’d never seen any clip of quint so i figured the one at the end was him and the body discoverer was a random character #he was wearing a wetsuit in the body scene and is seen from far away in behind in the final one so i have the right to not have realized ok #also weirdly enough my submechanophobia was not really triggered at all? which is wild. like one or two times it happened but like. that was #so weird to just. know that normally i’m scared of that kind of thing but it just. didn’t happen? like i’m scared of the jaws animatronic on #the universal ride! it scared me in pics and it scared me when i saw it irl! but bruce? nah she was just fine #that’s another thing i always think of bruce as she/her like. them all using he/him for the shark confused me #my brother mentioned she’s a girl in jaws 3d + in the wild girl sharks are bigger than boys so that’s probably what caused it #but i still think of godzilla as she/her and that one has like no evidence so maybe my brain just does that to them or smth

man my animation teacher is so cool. she’s such a chill person and i trust her a whole lot :)

#she’s not the cool teacher as in the one you form a deep emotional bond with #she’s the cool teacher as in she gives you autonomy but still provides help if you need #and if you want your classwork to be more challenging she will absolutely do that for you #it’s very. refreshing #of course i’m in the highest level class now (practicum baby) and there’s only like. 6 of us (which rules)#but also it’s a 2-period class and we share 6th period with animation 2 so #(i don’t mind honestly- i share a row with the pretty person i’ve been mentioning and the class is funny)#(that being said i get frustrated when we watch anything even mildly experimental and they’re all ‘WOAH WTF !!!!’ shut up)#(u literally started taking this class bc you liked aot if you can handle that you can handle a girl turning into a spider monster)#(just let the animation be weird and cool. cowards could never withstand 1920s animation)#but she’s just like cool and awesome in a bunch of little ways #she’s given me permission to spend 7th period filming for an english project with my friends on the condition that i show her the film when #it’s done #also she keeps little snacks on her and today she switched it up and put in like granola bars and stuff #everything got eaten except for some smoked salmon #she made a joke out of it. i immediately said ‘i’ll take it’#i got a yummy snack to eat while i worked AND i stopped clenching my jaw bc chewy salmon stim yas #she’s just. very relaxed. she treats us with agency and it’s like a breath of fresh air #plus she gives us tips about getting into the industry. i’m gonna be so good at making connections and marketing myself #speaking of which i might make some art social medias on other platforms soon #i would only ever use ‘em for art and then keep the tumblr blog for my personal stuff #(art would also be posted here dw)#but if i had like. an insta or smth i could post my stuff there :)#maybe twt too. once again NOT for personal use i would not be getting involved on twt as an actual user. god no #but. a semi-professional art blog insta and twt sounds smart #she suggested tiktok but idk. i have a vehement hatred for that website

shoutout to the dentist who, when I complained about major recurring jaw pain, suggested that I should "try having less stress"

#it's been 7 years and i still think about her whenever my jaw decides to disassemble itself #like sure. the constant biting down and tensing up subconsciously is a reason for it #but 'hey how about you be less stressed' is an absolute banger suggestion to a vet med student during exams #really struggled to keep it together then #in the end i did get a bite guard and physiotherapy and it all worked out fine and nowadays it's just A Thing That Happens™#but man. that never left me #anyway. wish me luck i'll make it through the weekend without the ibus failing

#i think i have to do it #i’ll be miserable my whole life if i dont #there’s bound to be a way to get like #srs and maybe ffs before im 18 #get it before uni #then go semi stealth in uni #i’m free from ritalin today so im clear of mind #i think #in my current mindful state #i maybe only need srs and maybe height reduction shit #depending on my final height #and maybe shoulders? idk i’ve been finding them fine lately and my hips getting wider will make them normaler #in terms of ffs it’s just brow lift and maybe jaw slimming and maybe chin reduction #again hrt should help with a lot of that #in terms of coming out the main thing is relating it too my mental health issues and explaining that diy is an option and i should take it #even if my parents aren’t accepting i still have some options in front of me #i can do the ‘suicide method’ where i threaten to kill myself unless i can diy #but that will probably get me pulled out of school and sent to an institution #but apparently it works for some ppl #i can always do it in secret too #the needles will be a hassle but im sure i could pay for it #i also need to figure out the legality of doing diy under 18 #and also how going to the doctors would be like #but ultimately that’s stuff i can figure out with my parents #if they are accepting #i could always come out to my sister first #bcs she would be accepting #i’ll ask how she came out and how it went for her #i think my ultimate transition goal should be to pass by the end of highschool #and be able to stealth in uni

Been working on a painting but it's supposed to be a bit unsettling and every night before bed I always turn it around so I don't see it staring at me... at least I know the concept is somewhat effective...

#this one is heavily inspired by Kahlo's 'The Wounded Deer'... just with a different meaning.#I love Kahlo's work. I'm latinx im legally required to but like I LOVE Kahlo's work and I would LOVE to see a piece by hers in person #I actually did get to see a Rivera painting in person more recently and I had NOT been expecting it so my jaw kinda dropped when i saw it.#It was one of if not my favorite paintings of his so ofc i freaked out a bit bc thats THE painting!! Still delighted about that.#Just felt like chatting today. This is one of the reasons ive been inactive... personal art kinda took the reigns this summer.#random stuff
