now that i'm thinking about it. like. what is supposed to be the appeal about making ekurei just 2 conventional hot guys doing conventional stuff. idk it just feels so boring to me?

u for the ask game?
U - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms
Fighting my urge to list off obvious responses like the Fukawas/ Reigen/ Spamton etc because like, I post about them all the time; we all know Karl is obsessed with them!! Instead gonna dig my mind for guys I'm not often super vocal about.
Kenny (Telltale's The Walking Dead) - I am the world's biggest Kenny defender. Jane fans hate me. I need a T-shirt that says "Kenny (TWDG) didn't do anything wrong" or however the phrase goes. I am exaggerating for the bit here I do acknowledge his faults HOWEVER I love him in spite of said flaws. He's just a guy who cares deeply for those he considers family and even when it comes out in bad ways I just can't hate him for it. Very uncomfortable with how violent he's written to be in s2 but there's still the Kenny I know and love from s1 down in there so whatever.
Zack Addy (Bones) - He is everything to me I'm gonna be real. I cannot describe to you how much it hurt that he didn't really come back after the Gormogon arc aside from like, some brief appearances as well as his side-arc or whatever in s12. I think the rotating cast of interns after his departure was fun and I really liked some of the guys that showed up from that but if you gave me a button that made Zack stay as a main character for the whole series I'd press it so fucking fast.
Ekubo (Mob Psycho 100) - I FEEL LIKE THIS ONE IS ALMOST AN OBVIOUS CHOICE GIVEN [*gestures at my url] BUT. I don't really post about him solo all that often which is funny given I think a lot abt him outside of Ekurei posting. I care his character growth over the series so much and if I wasn't so Reigen-brained I'd probably be so fucking annoying about him specifically. Fortunately my brother picks up the slack on that front o7 to him but yeah, give it up to Ekubo who would have to be my overall 2nd fav from MP100.
Jack Baker (Resident Evil 7) - I don't have a big spiel for him like I do the others idk my brain just latched onto him one day and I haven't been able to shake it since. I'm too much of a pussy to get myself to play RE7 (despite now owning it lmfao) and yet it's a comfort game of mine. Wild. ANYWAYS JACK BAKER him as an enemy is super fucking cool and he scares the crap out of me BUT I also like his uninfected moments. He's such a sweet father and it makes the tragedy of what happened to his family even more worse. Guys who I wish were my father.
Aoi Asahina (Danganronpa) - AOI MY SWEETHEART!!!! I know I publicly rotate the Naegis or the Fukawas or Kazuichi or etc. a lot but I'm also a big Aoi fan. Her relationship with Sakura makes me ❤💔❤💔❤💔❤ and genuinely I remember feeling so happy that she ended up being one of the survivors from that game. I still have yet to get through the dr3 anime but seeing her in the future arc is always a treat I love getting to see her again. Like Jack I don't have the deepest words for her but she just makes me so happy also like a lot of Danganronpa characters I wish she came from a better source media.
FTR I could give you so many more favs ESPECIALLY from Bones where I love the majority of the cast. But I'm holding back on giving an honorable mentions list since it would kinda defeat the purpose of the prompt AHJSNJKKGDJNNGKJ. Feel free to ask me about my opinions on the Bones cast or like my other favs. But also the Bones cast I am holding my tongue so hard on them.
[Ask game can be found here.] Don't be afraid to send an ask in I love talking about this stuff!

Slice of Folklore: An Asian Historical Folklore AU
by Tamadango
Oh god....Okay so this is an AU based on Chinese Folklore.
Reigen is a Daoshi Priest. This is a real sect of Taoism. But within the context of folklore, these Daoshi are more like Mages. They travel from village to village, doing exorcisms, performing rituals, removing curses, treating illnesses, presiding over ceremonies like funerals and also reanimating the dead so they can be walked to where they need to be buried.
Ekubo is a Jiangshi. More on this later.
That idiot villager…. said this route was a safe and easy hike
This is taking way longer than I expected. The other route would have been much faster
As he’s walking through a cave, the path underneath his feet collapses and he falls into a lower level of the cave.
(In chinese folklore, humans live on the surface and monsters/the dead/ spirits reside underground. Caves are sort of a limbo area inhabited by monsters, that average people avoid.
The path collapses underneath his feet, and he falls. -Screaming- Holy shit!
He falls and grunts in pain before looking up.
Directly in front of him, is a Jiangshi.
SAFE MY ASS!!
(Jiangshi are monsters from chinese folklore. They are corpses reanimated by blood spells. Lower level Jiangshi are just straight up zombies. Higher level ones are spirits sealed into dead bodies so they have some kind of will/consciousness like Ekubo here. They are reanimated by Daoshi priests and are obligated to serve them.
By default, Jiangshi are servant monsters, they ALWAYS have a master. Since they are dead/decaying bodies, they feed on the lifeforce of living people, ie blood. They can be powered up with blood, sealed with blood seals, sustained/controlled with blood. etc.
It’s sort of the mix between a zombie_ (undead, with poisonous bite)_, a vampire (needs blood), and a summoned demon (serves a master.) in western fiction.)
Reigen reaches around for his bag as the Jiangshi hops towards him. “Dammit all my tools are in my bag.”
(Tools specifically associated with being a Daoshi priest, like exorcism stuff, ritual daggers…spell tags…etc)
WHOA!
The creature is lunges at him, snapping. -teeth snapping sounds-
Reigen: ....? What an odd blood seal. Is it possible that this Jiangshi is acting under the control of this spell?
I have to remove it somehow!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
bottom panel -murmuring-
Ekubo: Hnnnnnngg
I’m finally free… Thanks to you
(So technically, he serves Reigen now. Jiangshi are servant monsters by their nature.)
Reigen: Ahhh the J…..J…. Jiangshi…. It talks! (Low level Jiangshi can’t talk... only the spirit sealed ones can.)
Ekubo: What kind of terrible outfit is this?
Ekubo: Huh? Don’t put me in the same category as those low class monsters.
Ekubo leans over: ....hmmmm
Sniff Sniff
You’re a Daoshi Priest from the Salt group aren’t you?
Eh?
Ekubo: and you’re a virgin….good! good!
Reigen: What business is that of yours?
Ekubo: Haha…What’s your name?
Reigen: Reigen.... Reigen arataka
(Daoshi Priesthood requires celibacy, virginity, veganism, no alcohol and vow of poverty, along with a lot of other things like prayer, literacy in religious languages, etc.)
My name is Ekubo. I am an high level creature of darkness!
(In Chinese folklore, Humans reside on the surface and monsters, demons, spirits, reside underground, and are collectively referred as such.)
You’re going to help me find the asshole who kept me sealed for the past couple hundred years so I can take my revenge.
Reigen: No, I’ll pass. I need to get to the next town, see ya (he says this very fast while walking away)
Ekubo: What?! Hey Wait! There’s lots of gold and treasure in the crypt below. I was guarding it. It’s yours if you help me out.
Reigen’s ears twitch.
(Daoshi Priests are required to take a vow of poverty so he’s not supposed to be interested in riches or accumulating wealth.
Jiangshi are servant monsters by their nature, and must have a master at all times. Which is why Ekubo tries to convince Reigen to go with him. Because If Reigen just left, he would have no choice but to follow.)
They’re looking at a sarcophagus covered in spell seals in the chamber below.
Reigen: Is that the owner of the crypt buried here? Doesn’t look wealthy to me.
Ekubo: Im sure all the good stuff is in the coffin
(In ancient china, as in most ancient cultures, it’s typical to dress the corpse lavishly and fill the coffin with jewelry, money and valuables, so the dead person can be wealthy in the afterlife)
Reigen: Hey, All these coffins in the back here are empty… that’s really strange
-Click-
Ekubo: No… those aren’t normal coffins… these… they’re sacrifices!
Reigen! It’s dangerous, Get Back!
Reigen: Wait… why are you running?!? Weren’t you looking for this guy so you can take revenge?
Ekubo: Hey I thought he sealed me here to guard the crypt, I didn’t realize I was intended as a snack for later.
Reigen: What?!? Does that mean those coffins are empty because it already ate them? So there’s no actual treasure?
Ekubo: Is THAT what you’re worried about right now? Can you stop being a greedy bastard for a bit so we can get out of here?
(Again, as a priest, he would have taken a vow of poverty and isn’t supposed to be interested in riches.)
Ekubo: Reigen what are you doing? You cant beat him! That monster is powered up from eating countless other creatures of darkness.
Reigen: Yeah that’s exactly why he needs to be stopped
Reigen: Ridding the world of monsters and exorcising evil is my calling!
Reigen: And you, since you haven’t been eaten yet, help me out
Ekubo: Tch! I want to, but this body is way too weak to go up against a monster like that.
Get down!
Ekubo: You don’t look it, but you’re actually pretty powerful. Shame it’s not enough to defeat him. Impressive nonetheless.
Reigen: We don’t have time for small talk! Think of something useful! Get us out of this mess!
Ekubo: Alright alright, calm down. You can leave it to me.
Ekubo: huh! very nice flavor.
The blood from the tongue of a virgin plus my (some kind of power class that is ancient but also protective)
(I really tried to translate this part but I don’t get the exact words he’s saying. The gist is that he gets a powerup by combining their powers. That’s it.)
Ekubo: I should be able to break through the protective barrier that he’s using to shield himself.
**Ekubo: Bring it! I’ll show you my true strength. **
Reigen: Can’t move… Cant feel my body at all….Looks like the poison is taking effect…. Makes sense… the bite of a Jiangshi
(Jiangshi feed on lifeforce/blood, so their bites can drain a person of their lifeforce temporarily.)
Can’t feel my tongue at all. It’s completely numb
Dont lose you bastard
I’m so tired……
Reigen: Ekubo?
Ekubo: Farewell...
Ah!
-tongue hurts -
Thinks: so it wasn’t a dream
**He starts sobbing. **
**Ekubo: You alright? **
Reigen: It’s a talking fart!
Ekubo: Hey! It’s me! Ekubo!
Why are you crying? You miss me?
(More advanced Jiangshi are spirits sealed into dead bodies so they can be freed if their bodies are destroyed )
Reigen: Idiot! I’m trying to get the taste of corpse out of my mouth! You’ve been dead for hundreds of years!
Ekubo: Why are you so angry? Was that your first kiss?
Reigen: Shut up! Don’t you have some underground crypt to return to? What are you loitering out here for?
Ekubo: Just doing my guard duty.
Reigen: Why are you following me?
Ekubo: Why can’t I follow you? I just saved your ass, you could be a little more grateful you know.
(So earlier, Reigen removes the seal that was controlling Ekubo, and he then serves Reigen by default. After his body is destroyed, he’s free to move on. The implication here is that he’s chosen not to, and has decided to follow Reigen around instead.)

UGHHHH. I was not going to translate this. But @gemmawritessometimes prodded me into it. There was so much goddamn folklore shit to explain.
Also this comic has a lot of terms you ONLY see in folklore and rarely anywhere else. Goddammit.
Yeah, anyway, enjoy this comic.

Mob Psycho II Special Event - part 2
I’m going to summarise in point form before I forget them further, and get back to them later.
Special guest, the director Yuzuru Tachikawa was called to the stage.
Afternoon session:
Best 5 most comedic scene
5th) Ero-kubo? Episode 3, was it? The cast was discussing about it but tbh, I didn’t understand.
4th) Not elaborated on and I forgot
3rd) Not elaborated on and I forgot
2nd) Ritsu’s inner monologue when Tsubomi and her friend visited Spirits & Such for love consultation. The disgust on his face when he hissed (in his mind) “Yokei na koto itterun jyanai, Reigen!” was so...good.
After they showed the scene (only the top 2 got the scene shown. The rest were just presented), Irino started elaborating that Ritsu thinks about Mob a lot, to protect him and care for him, etc
1st) Reigen’s ‘Self-Defense Rush’. Enuff said.
This ‘Best 5′ was hardest to remember. Seriously, there were so many funny moments in MP100; too many to count. And they didn’t really go thru in details.
Best 5 most action-packed scene
5th) Mob (possessed by Ekubo) vs Shibata
4th) Mob vs Boss
3rd) Mob (possessed by Ekubo) vs Minori (possessed by Mogami)
The cast were showing some shock that Mob vs Boss was only 4th in the ranking, and Ekubo joked that he was doing all the hard work for 3rd and 5th. During possessions, Otsuka was saying he wanted to imitate Mob’s gentle and calm tone, but the Director said it didn’t work and that it was best to keep to Ekubo’s character.
2nd) Mob vs Mogami
After the scene was shown on screen, the cast were all in awe and saying that the animation was simply ‘sugoi’ (as per Irino) and it’s cinema/big-picture level quality.
The cast were also saying that Mob fights a lot.
1st) Teruki, Ritsu, former members of Claw vs Shimazaki. Need I say more? The way the camera changed angles, the action-packed sequence, Teruki’s chilling face shot (that’s why in Part 1 I said I wished he was there so he could comment on it!)
Special mention on 8th rank, Mob vs Serizawa because they wanted Hoshino to be able to comment on it. Hoshino was saying that there were moments in the fight where he was just more concerned about causing Mob pain. It was not as intense as other fights because the purpose was different, and friendship bud from there (I might be making this up because seriously, didn’t understand some of the Japanese).
Evening session:
Best 5 Weird Face 変顔
5th) Ekubo’s paper thin face that was picked up by Reigen, I think. Otsuka was saying Ekubo’s face is weird in the first place, and others chipped in that this was particularly weirder. Someone (forgot who) mentioned that Ekubo made a creepy tissue paper.
4th) Mob’s face when he was knocked down by Dash Baba in episode 2, I think? Can’t remember.
3rd) Ritsu’s serious and dark face (forgot which episode?). Irino started speaking a lot about Nii-san again and he joked that 80% of his dialogue was Nii-san. The host remarked that it was Irino’s skill that brought many different tones and feelings to the same ‘Nii-san’ word.
2nd) Reigen’s face when he received the ‘present’ attachment email from his mom, being an advertisement about job vacancies.
(Personal opinion: looking back, it was a very well executed scene. The camera angles focus on everything else other than Reigen’s face - the mouse, the computer screen, the back of the computer, etc - until the attachment was opened, and BAM, Reigen’s speechless face. On a white background. Pencil sketched.)
The Director was saying the animator might have been drawing using left hand. But the Director kept changing his story haha. First he said the animator/drawer was very good. Then someone said, was the picture lifted from manga? Then the drawer was ONE-sensei?
1st) Reigen’s face when he accidentally crossed path with Mob & friends (Tome and... the chestnut haired guy with short thick brows) after the fall out in episode 8. Again with the perfect timing and blank expression.
Someone asked, did the drawer use crayon? The Director said, no they used left hand haha. At first, Sakurai said, this is a realistic expression. If something shocking happens to you in real life, you’d probably have this expression too. But then after that he said, no, it’s like the face of a cat who’s taking a crap. And then the cast keep bringing up this joke haha...
Best 5 Moving scene (YESSH I knew since the afternoon session they will bring this up)
5th) I forgot...
4th) Ritsu’s “I want to protect the right to enjoy my life to the fullest!” in episode 11. Irino had remembered this since the afternoon session but could not remember the exact line and nobody else could either. The host had to prompt him for the lines and then Irino was really attached to the “and then BAM! Collision with a truck!” and the cast kept mentioning it over and over. Irino joked that although the scene was supposed to be moving, after this day the audience will all remember it as a joke instead.
3rd) Reigen’s “Seichou shita na, omae” in the teleconference
Everyone was commenting that it’s a good expression on Reigen (unlike the ‘cat taking a crap thing they were harping on under ‘Best 5 weird faces’)
The Director said that Reigen’s facial expression was actually not lifted from manga. After discussion with ONE-sensei, they decided the anime version was better able to convey what ONE-sensei wanted. In the dialogue, actually there is a sense of loneliness from Reigen, that he was being left behind.
2nd) Mob picking up Emi’s writing which was torn up by her friends. “I’ve decided to treat my feelings preciously,” Mob said and teared up. Emi then proceeded to help him pick up the pieces too. When the wind blew them away, Mob used his powers to put the pieces together, the scene ending with “I’m a psychic.”
Secchan admitted to being nervous it wouldn’t turn up well, and was pressured because it’s the first episode of S2.
1st) Do I even need to say? Of course it’s when Reigen and Mob met at the bridge after the teleconference!
Reigen: “Why are you here?”
Mob: “Nanto naku”
Reigen: “Do you know... my true self? From the mass media...”
Mob: “I’ve known from the start.”
“My master is... a good man.”
The cast had a lot of comments on this. Sakurai was saying it was difficult. He and Secchan did the recording when the visuals weren’t ready so they were just trying their best to convey the emotions, and when it all came together, they were all awed. The timing with Sajou no Hana’s song, Grey, was spot on.
The Director also mentioned he debated with himself about ending the episode after “...a good man.” But it gave too much of a sense of finality and he wanted to show that life still moved on. So the dialogue on “getting ramen” was added.

Better than when you found it -Part 2-
Part 1 Here
-The Second Day: Saturday-
Ekubo: Yawwwwn~~What are we doing today?
Reigen brushing teeth: There’s a DVD rental kiosk around the corner. Wanna check it out?
Mob: Yes I’m here
Reigen: Wait, Mob what? (btw you have foam on your face.)
Mob: Weren’t you asking me where I was?
Reigen: No?
Serizawa pops out: Did someone say movie?!
Mob thinks: I keep hearing someone calling my name.
One unspecified adult: What movies are we getting?
Another unspecified adult: Lets go take a look at what they have.
--20 Minutes Later--
Unspecified Adult: Alright! What do we have?
(It’s not specified who is speaking here, but based on the speech form it’s either Reigen or Ekubo, not Serizawa)
Ekubo reads: The Hunger Games?
Someone else: We’ll that’s....
Mob: I’ve heard of it before.
Ekubo: Yeah?
Mob: Master told me about it. -He holds up a clothes hanger-
Mob puts the clothes hanger on his head: Yeah! Hunger Games!
Ekubo: Um....
Reigen: NO NO, That’s not it.
(Can someone explain this reference to me? I’ve never seen the Hunger games. I have no idea what this is about.)
Somebody: Whatever. Lets try it.
There is a loud scream from the TV. Serizawa is startled into dropping his tea tray. Ekubo covers Mob’s eyes.
Reigen is pissed: WHO PICKED THIS VIOLENT FILM?! Take care of Mob!
Mob peeling Ekubo’s hands off his face: Um... I’m fine with it. I just.....I just feel like something is wrong.
(He’s actually referring to the presence of the spirit in the apartment. He’s been talking about it since the first panel. The adults are having too much fun they forgot.)
Reigen: You.....You’re not likeing this violence are you?
hmmmmmm
Reigen: Okay Mob! Listen up! I’m gonna teach you the right way to approach media like movies and TV.
You gotta put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist.
(I LOVE THE WAY THIS PANEL IS DRAWN. The framing of the panel is encouraging and mentorly, like a coach telling his player to go out there and do his best, ........except it’s Reigen...teaching Mob to watch movies.... He’s 14, I’m sure he’s seen movies before.)
Reigen puts his hand on Mob’s shoulder: You think you can do it?
Mob: um....
Reigen: Try it out! I guarantee you’ll get a different experience out of it.
Mob is watching intently while all three adults look bored. The room is filled with fighting sounds.
Mob: That looks like it hurts.
Reigen looks over at Mob and fails to notice the rustling behind him.
Reigen’s Phone Rings: Crap I forgot
Mob: Is it a client?
Reigen: Yeah
Reigen: I’m just going to go on my own, it’ll be quick.
Ekubo: Are you gonna be okay on your own?
Reigen: Yeah it’s fine, It’s just an in-office consultation. I’ll be back at around noon.
Mob: Okay, see you later
Reigen: yep
Ekubo: So.... what are we gonna do?
Serizawa: Ummmmm
(I like how Ekubo hangs out on top of Mobs head, the way he does all the time as a spirit.)
Serizawa gets an idea looking at the microwave: How about we cook while waiting for Reigen to return?
Mob: That’s a good idea, he’d be hungry when he comes back
Mob thinks: I don’t know how to cook though.
Ekubo rolls up sleeves: Lets do it! It’s not like we’re busy. I’ll show you my signature dish!
Serizawa: Ekubo-kun...
Ekubo: Alright lets divide up the work.
Mob: Okay
Serizawa: ah! Yes!
They start cooking. Mob cuts himself chopping vegetables.
Serizawa: Ah! You’re bleeding!
Mob: Ow ow...
Ekubo: You cut yourself AGAIN?!
They’re almost done.
Mob: Im hungry
Ekubo making fried rice. Should we make something more than just this?
Serizawa: Ah, we can add a salad!
It’s 12:42
Reigen Returns: Ugh this place is so far from the office. I’m starving.
He’s jiggling the key in the lock: lock is acting up again.
Huh?
(This is a callback to the beginning when he was working the lock, he told everyone to do things in pairs to avoid being possessed. He forgot and went off on his own.)
Reigen gets possessed
The door clatters and he enters the apartment.
Mob: ah! Master! Welcome back!
Mob: Master?
Reigen: What have you guys busied yourself with?
Ekubo: Um.... what?
Serizawa: We made lunch
Mob: eh? ehhh?
Reigen:THIS is what you’ve decided to whittle away the last few hours on?
(This is so hard to translate, but it’s what I love about translating. His word choice here is saying that 1. they acted without permission. 2. they did something that wasted time, and resources and was ultimately unnecessary. 3. they’re screwing around like children.)
Reigen: No one asked you to do this. Why you did is beyond me.
Others: ?!
Reigen: I put a lot of effort into planning what foods to bring and what the meal plans were going to be.
(Reigen doesn’t normally have light colored eyes. That’s a nice touch.)
Ekubo is looking at Mob
Mob: I....Im sorry
Ekubo remembers how eager mob wanted to cook for Reigen, how he cut him self trying.
Serizawa: Mr. Reigen, this is very unlike you. Is something wrong?
Ekubo to Reigen: I don’t like your tone.
Serizawa: Ekubo-kun!*
Ekubo: Look, I’m not sure what’s gotten into you but.......
Reigen: Hmm?
(*This wasn’t made all that clear in the manga, but Serizawa is ALWAYS very deferential around Reigen. He’s never direct with him, meekly suggests things rather than outright stating them. He doesn’t treat their relationship as that of equals, he’s the subordinate and he expresses this in the language he uses and the tone he takes.
As opposed to Ekubo who is direct and not afraid to confront Reigen. Ekubo’s pronouns, word choice and tone expresses the belief that he is an equal if not better than the people around him.
Which is why Serizawa is shocked that Ekubo is so direct. Like, How could he just outright say “I dont like your tone” TO Reigen?)
Reigen: got something to say?
Ekubo: ....how dare you? What gives you the right?
Serizawa: ....?
Reigen: What gives YOU the right? It’s not YOUR body. It’s not like I asked you to possess this man. You did that yourself.
Serizawa notices that there’s something on Reigen: Ekubo-kun w...wait!
Ekubo: Bastard, if you don’t stop running your mouth....
Reigen smiles: Hmmm? Are you not an evil spirit? You REALLY think you live a normal human life again?
(I love that panel with Reigen’s silent open-mouthed smile, he knows he’s won. He’s gonna pull the trigger now.)
Ekubo: ..... I see
Mob: Eku~
Ekubo: I understand now. -He walks out and closes the door being him-
Mob stands at the door: Ekubo?
Serizawa: Ekubo-kun
(AAAHHH I LOVE HOW YOU DON’T SEE EKUBO’S EXPRESSION IN THE FIRST PANEL THERE)
Reigen: Enough.... he’s so much trouble.
Mob is still at the door:..... Ekubo
Mob: When we were cooking, he said....
Ekubo: He’s considerate in a way.... For an evil spirit like me, he treats me no different than anyone else around him.... that’s something.
Mob: Eventhough Ekubo is an evil spirit, and a dangerously powerful one at that,... he’s an uncharacteristically a good person.
Mob opens the door and runs outside after him.
TO BE CONTINUED
I like this part SO GODDAMN MUCH. Reigen is really good at reading people and knowing what to say. He can use his words to get people to feel how he wants them to, and the idea of him getting possessed and unleashing his ability on other people to destroy them is so goddamn cool.
You’ve heard of Empaths. They are people that easily understand the emotions of others. But in psychology, there’s a lesser known personality type called a “Dark Empath” that can understand peoples feelings well but is also a sociopath that has no problems hurting other people.
Dark Empaths use their understanding of other people to hurt, defraud and other take advantage of others. These are people that convince others to commit suicide or charm people out of their life savings etc.
I wish there was more Dark Empath! Reigen fics.
This is something I’ve not seen in Fanfiction, in fact, this comic is the only place I’ve seen it. It’s such an interesting concept. Like, if there were fics that cast him as a villan, then it’s perfectly in-character and logical for him to be a Dark Empath.

Reigen gets a Smart Phone
Reigen thinks: When did they all switch to smart phones?
So does that mean I’m the only one still using a flip phone?
No... No that cant be, the main purpose of a cell phone is to communicate. In that respect, it does great. More functions are not necessarily useful. Most of it is just entertainment and pointless frills.
The battery drains faster, the screen is a lot easier to break and they’re more expensive.
Haaaaa!! Check it out Losers! Six super rares! Told you I’d get ‘em!
Serizawa: WHOAA!! Ekubo Senpai, you’re amazing! That’s so much grinding, I’m not even close.....
Mob: My mom won’t let me to play on the phone at night, so I never get the chance to grind.
Ekubo: HAHAHAHA That kind of skill is difference between you ordinary people and gods like me! um... not including shigeo’s ???% form that is....
Reigen: Um.... Guys?
Reigen: Aren’t you guys spending too much time playing phone games at work?
Serizawa: Ah! I... I’m sorry.
Mob: But isn’t this our lunch break?
Ekubo: HAHAHAHAHA What, you guys can’t tell? Reigen’s just jealous cuz he doesn't have a smart phone.
Reigen backpedaling: I’m just curious is all. Why did you guys all decide to switch to smart phones all of a sudden?
Serizawa: The GPS app is really helpful, now that I’m no longer at home all the time. The other apps are really useful for work and school.
Mob: My mom got it for me after I did well on midterms.
Ekubo: How should I know. It came with the body.
Some time later, Reigen is outside the phone store looking at the ads.
The phones are free. The plans range from 90 to 100 dollars monthly.
Reigen: It’s almost a hundred dollars a month! Several times more expensive than my flip phone.
This is a money sink that’s not going to contribute meaningfully to my life.
Ugh.. when I really think about it, I don’t need a phone with so many functions. The phone I’ve got now is by no means old, and I’m pretty used to it.
Reigen: I can’t get carried away by vanity. I don’t blindly mirror the choices of others, that’s not who I am and how I want to live.
Little girl: Mom, that basic guy has one of those basic phones.
Mom: Shh! Not out loud!
------
Cashier: Thank you for the purchase!
-Later at Reigen’s apartment-
So this is the cutting edge of communications technology...
It feels like opening a treasure chest. - as he opens the box -
WOOOOOW!!
Ah! so this is the user manual. I see... I see.
What was the game they were playing?
Found it! Ooooooo! My avatar looks so cool.
Hahaha found Ekubo! What a fitting avatar for an evil spirit!
Ah! Mob’s avatar is adorable. Aww he’s going to sleep now.
-The next morning-
Ugghghhhh can’t keep grinding....
You can’t get past any of the bosses without seriously strong upgrades.
-Gets up stiffly-
Okay time to spin for the powerup bonus.
-He taps to draw a new powerup.-
.....................
NO RARES, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
-throws phone- -nervously catches it again-
No gems left, no gold left.... is making an in game purchase the only way to get more draws?
No wait Arataka, it’s just an app game... be reasonable!
Calm down... think about this...
-LIMITED TIME ONLY! 100% CHANCE OF RARE ITEM-
Reigen taps “buy” and there is a cash register sound effect.
As the scene zooms out, the sound effect rings several more times. (ie, he makes a bunch more in-app purchases)
Mob: Master’s been working really hard recently. He didn’t even take a lunch break today.
Serizawa: Did something happen?
GODDAMMMMIT I maxed out my funds on in-app purchases. Have to take on more jobs to make up for it.
--For the first time in his life, Reigen Arataka realized the terrifying allure of escapism.--
I’m switching back to my flip phone.

This is one of my absolute favorite comics. It’s got everything I love about ALL of the characters.
- The spirits and such team just hanging out around the office, not doing any work, just casually sharing something they all enjoy.
- Ekubo having to be THE BEST... Canonically he refers to himself as Ore-sama or “本大人” which is more accurately translated as “Your Majesty, I....” He is clearly better than everyone else and he needs to show it at even trivial things like a phone game.
-Ekubo possessing his host to play for hours and hours just so he can one up his FRIENDS (two of the most powerful psychics in the world)...and justify them as “followers” with “much to learn”.
- Mob is the most powerful esper in the world and can flatten cities effortlessly, The three adults treat him as an equal, and Serizawa even treats him as a superior. Yet he’s still a kid that needs boundaries. His MOM bought him the phone as a reward for good grades and takes it away at night.
- Serizawa stopped being a shut in and his GPS app is allowing him the independence to be out and about for the first time in his life. His smartphone gives him the agency to start living on his own terms, just as Reigen’s flip phone allows him to stay focused on what’s important to him.
- Reigen for all his sweaty conman disasterness is a dilligent, organized, autodidact, that started his own successful business at 25. He doesn’t play games, he’s constantly working on his business, and he understands and is proud of how offbeat and uncommon that is....but he’s not beyond moments of insecurity driven impulsiveness. It’s incredibly consistantly depicted, him being a spoilsport about the game, buying the phone, but also throwing it when he doesn’t get the in game item he wants.
- Reigen isn’t someone that does a half assed job. He gives 110% even on jobs he’s not being paid....so it makes perfect sense that he can’t seem to stop himself from becoming overly dedicated to a phone game.
-But lastly, some culture/language meta. The characters and series is japanese, the artist that drew this comic is chinese, and it’s being translated into english by an american.
The little girl at the phone store says “Mom, that basic guy has one of those basic phones.” what she really says, is “Mom look that guy has a flip phone, it’s so provincial/rural.”
China has this interesting divide between the urban and rural population. Where people living in cities view people out in the countryside as dumb rednecks that are decades behind in education, technology, social norms...etc. This is not true, but saying that someone is from the countryside is a massive insult. No one wants to be seen that way.
English lacks this divide between urban vs rural, and the only word that fits even a little is “basic.”
So even if this is a fanart for a japanese series, the context of that line can really only be understood in chinese, and there’s no word that really comes close to that idea in english. From a translation standpoint I find that really interesting, when media hops countries it loses, but also gains things.
God I love this comic so much
