WHAT IS BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM??
Blog#383
Wednesday, March 13th, 2024.
Welcome back,
Earth is the sixth planet from the edge of the solar system, meaning we're none too near this cold and inhospitable frontier. But we've sent out various spacecraft over the years, so do we have any idea what the edge of the solar system looks like?
The answer is yes, but it's a work in progress. One of the latest developments, a 3D map of the solar system's edge that took 13 years to create, revealed a few more secrets about this mysterious boundary, called the outer heliosphere.
Tumblr media
The outer heliosphere marks the region of space where the solar wind, or the stream of charged particles emitted from the sun, is "deflected and draped back" by the interstellar radiation that permeates the empty space beyond the solar system, said Dan Reisenfeld, a space science researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and head of the team that conducted the research on the 3D map. In other words, solar wind and interstellar particles meet and form a boundary at the far reaches of the solar system.
Tumblr media
Earthlings first got a glimpse of the solar system's outer edge in 2012, when Voyager I, a NASA spacecraft that launched in 1977, crossed into interstellar space, according to NASA. Voyager 2 was not far behind, repeating the feat in 2018. Equipped with golden records full of Bach, Louis Armstrong and humpback whale songs, in addition to their scientific instruments, Voyagers 1 and 2 reported a sudden dropoff in solar particles and a substantial increase in galactic radiation when they left the solar system, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology.
Tumblr media
The new 3D map reveals even more about the heliosphere. The inner layer — where the sun and its planets are nestled — is roughly spherical and is thought to extend roughly 90 astronomical units (AU) in all directions. (One AU is the average distance between Earth and the sun, about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers.) The outer layer is much less symmetrical. In one direction — that in which the ever-moving sun plows through the space in front of it, encountering cosmic radiation — the outer heliosphere extends about 110 AU, but in the opposite direction, it's much longer, at least 350 AU, according to Reisenfeld.
Tumblr media
That lack of symmetry comes from the sun's movement through the Milky Way, as it experiences friction with the galactic radiation in front of it and clears out a space in its wake. "There's a lot of plasma [charged particles] in the interstellar medium, and… the inner heliosphere, which is pretty round, is an obstacle in this stream of plasma which is flowing past it," Reisenfeld told Live Science. "It has the same effect as water going around a rock in a stream," with a rush of water crashing into the rock in front and a sheltered calm behind it.
Tumblr media
Measurements for the 3D map were gathered using the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), which was launched in 2008 and is "the size of a bus tire," according to NASA. It's pronounced "like the animal," Reisenfeld said, referring to the ibex mountain goats known for their gravity-defying treks up alpine cliffs. But the animal that IBEX really takes after is the bat.
Tumblr media
Many bats hunt insects, such as mosquitoes, by emitting a pulse of sound and using the time delay of the echo to figure out the distance to their prey. Likewise, IBEX detects solar-wind particles that have bounced back from the edges of the solar system, allowing Reisenfeld and his colleagues to determine the distances involved by measuring how long their round trip took.
Tumblr media
"The sun will send out a pulse … and then we passively wait for a return signal from the outer heliosphere, and we use that time delay to determine where the outer heliosphere must be," Reisenfeld explained.
As the sun circles the outer rim of the Milky Way, the solar wind keeps cosmic radiation at bay, forming a protective bubble. This is good for us, since "that radiation can damage spacecraft and it can be a health hazard for astronauts," Reisenfeld said.

For Rin, Rams, and Fiona:
13 for Appearance
17 for Objects
3 for Food
19 for Weather and Nature
18 for Community and Relationships
13 for Mind, Body, and Soul
4 for Hobbies and Activities
thank you for including rams and rin!! really fun answering asks for them!!
13. What is something your character would refuse to wear?
RAMS - Dark academia. Just looking at it makes him tired. All the plaids and browns and blacks and beiges —it’s just sad. If this makes sense: dark academia comes with a certain personality accessory, you know the insular academic with niche interests in literature etc. The way Rams sees it, if he wears dark academia then he’s gotta adopt the dark academia personality and it’ll drag down his regular personality.
FIONA - Fiona’s pretty open to everything… just as long as he can put he bought it. No offense to his friends but Gigi is the only person he really trusts to pick out clothes for him. As in, anyone can recommend clothes to him (since that leaves the final choosing up to Fiona)but actually buying and gifting him clothes gets under his skin especially if it’s something he wouldn’t wear.
RIN - Beige khaki shorts and cheetah print/animal print. It makes her look tacky, at least in her opinion. She does not have the charisma or the confidence to pull off those looks at all. Not that she’s interested in it in the first place but it’d be a limitation even if she wanted to.
17. What is most important to your character when shopping?
RAMS - Comfort+Aesthetic, hands down. Co wants to enjoy using whatever co’s buying. Plus, cos room has a very inviting cozy feel so co wouldn’t want to contradict those vibes (assuming whatever co’s buying is for cos room).
RIN - Price/Quality ratio. She’s pretty budget conscious with her money but still wants all the best stuff. Which results in her being a really great shopper, she does her research beforehand so she knows exactly what she’s getting and at what price and if the quality’s alright. She’s the type of person who knows the price of stuff at all the nearby stores off the top of her head.
FIONA - The Vibes. Money isn’t really a problem anymore so everything is on a vibes-with-it-basis. Sure, actual use is important but vibes trump that.
9. Is there a food or drink your character is unwilling to try?
No. For all of ‘em. Anything and everything is worth ONE try minimum.
19. What animal would your character say best represents them?
Will not lie, I haven’t really thought about this. So this is subject to change but for now this is what I think!
RIN: “Something pretty dangerous, but doesn’t just attack without reason. Probably a hippo.” (Accurate)
RAMS: “A ferret? Maybe? Friendly and slippery? I think?” (inaccurate: rams is more like an alpine ibex)
FIONA: “Oh, easy. A swan. Striking, elegant, and looks pretty in most colors.” (accurate enough)
18. What is your character's favorite form of affection?
FIONA - Gifts + Words of Affection
RAMS - Physical touch + Quality Time
RIN - Acts of Service + Quality Time
13. How does your character relax?
RIN - ultimate relaxation technique? Amusement park rides! But that’s not something she can do everyday or easily so… bungee jumping, horror movies, anything that makes her adrenaline spike
FIONA - If he needs to relax right after work then he’s heading to the roller rink! If he’s at home, then toss on a podcast and knit some sweaters!
RAMS - 1) Music + 2) Friends + 3) Quietly Spending Time together = A happy and relaxed Rams. Rams can very much be the ‘cat’ of the group. Literally just lounging around on everyone. It’s great, it’s fun.
4. Is there an activity your character used to enjoy that they now dislike?
RAMS - Academics in general? He used to be super into school, doing assignments, and talking to to teachers/making friends at school. But crashed and burned during high school and he still loves learning just... not school.
RIN -Not really? She didn’t do much as a kid so most of the stuff she did she still enjoys in mostly unchanged form.
FIONA - Speeches… He is a pretty good orator and used to take huge pride in it because it made his parents super happy. They took any chance to have him speak in front of people especially through church service youth days when he’d pastor 😬 Now it’s… a thing he can do.

Minecraft Goats - how to Breed and Tame Them?
Minecraft goats - how to tame and breed
Where to find goats, and what happens if you are on their bad side

There's been a lot of discussion about the "caves' side of the Minecraft 1.17 update however, not much has been said about the 'cliffs' and their latest Minecraft mob - goats. We get it. Cobraplanet.com Axolotls from Minecraft are fantastic underwater companions and could be game-changing. The Minecraft Warden is a frightening new monster that is totally blind, but is a mighty punch. But, wouldn't you instead think of Minecraft's goats?
Yes, goats are present in Minecraft. Finally! There are many types and varieties of goats in real life, such as the ibex who can walk on steep hills and the fainting goat. The Minecraft goats are based on the Rocky Mountain goat (or Oreamnos Americanus) and are well-suited for subalpine and alpine climates. They are not goats. They are more like antelopes square-shaped fakers.
They're still us and behave just like the woolly mountain goats that we are awestruck by. Here is everything you must be aware of about Minecraft goats.
Where to find goats in Minecraft
Minecraft goats can be seen on the top of surfaces with light levels of seven or more like cliffs. . It isn't apparent that it matters too much if the cliffs are covered in snow or grass however, they do appear to move around more in the daylight hours.
If you're lucky enough you might also see screaming goats. The only difference between them and regular goats is their bleats so you'll need to pay attention to them.
What are the things that Minecraft goats do?
They are based on the Rocky Mountain goat, an antelope disguised as a goat to keep cool. It's difficult to duplicate their unique ability of being able to balance on steep surfaces and climb up high.
Instead of jumping a block high, Minecraft goats can jump two blocks high. They can cross small gaps easily and look majestic when they do it. When encountered with holes in the ground or blocks of powder snow they can leap up to ten blocks in the air.
They have ten health points (5 full hearts) and can take seven damage (3 and a half hearts).
Generally goats seem quite passive, and as CaptainSparklez found out during the 1.17 beta snapshots, they won't attack you if you strike them first. Instead, they'll randomly decide that you're required to be yelled off a ledge, and then ram into you with all force. Even if they are angry, they are more likely to target your enemies to defend you. If attacked, the goat will run away from its attacker.
How do I obtain the Goat Horn?
The Minecraft 1.17 update introduces a brand new item called the goat Horn. You can collect up to a maximum of two goat horns when the goat rams into blocks however they only drop one at a. The easiest method to obtain a goat horn is to gather several goats in a single area and then have them charge you. Once a charging goat comes into contact with the block their horn will break off.
There will be a sound when you use a goat's Horn. It's like blowing through the Horn to trigger an alarm. This is the exact sound you hear when you go on raids in Minecraft villages. What is this noise doing? There's some speculation that suggests the goat's horn could be used in a future easter egg, but at present the horn is only making the sound of raid.
What do Minecraft Goats eat?
In the real world, goats were one of the first animals domesticated because of their grass-eating habits, milk producing udders and tasty meat. You can feed them with wheat to get them to follow your lead. This will make them fall in a love-struck state and allow you to breed. You can also make milk by placing an empty bucket on them. If the goat is in flames then you can cook raw or cooked mutton on them. But who would do such a terrible thing?
They're not able to ride horses like the Minecraft horses. Due to their nature, they are the most loved pet.
There's a lot to discover about the history of Minecraft and its future through the Caves & Cliffs update. And that's not just about the new mobs. There is something for everyone in Minecraft including copper ore, to the Lush caves. More details will be available when Minecraft 1.18 is released.

You can also make milk by putting an empty bucket on them or kill them to get raw mutton or cooked Mutton if the goat was burning however, who would do such a terrible thing?
They're not able ride horses like the Minecraft horses. Due to their nature, they are the most valuable pet. Multiplayer servers
There's still plenty to learn about what's already in Minecraft through the Caves & Cliffs update and the future updates and we're not only talking about the new mobs. There's something for every Minecraft player, from copper ore to the Lush caves. More information will be available once Minecraft 1.18 is released.

(1/2) Hey socks, I love your occasional biology rants on the Witcher 'verse, so you might be the right person to bounce this thought off of: Having recently finished Wild Hunt the biology nerd in me can’t stop thinking about the sheer amount of wolves in the game.
(2/2) So, what are these wolves eating other than the occasional villager? The answer has to be either mostly cannibalism (not sustainable) or monsters. Which is why I present: The wolves in the Witcher universe have learned to take down less intelligent monsters like drowners, nekkers, ghouls or rotfiends due to a lack of natural prey animals.
!!! fuck yes!
tho first: from your mention of “lack of natural prey animals” i assume this is less about the number of wolves and more about the fact that TW3 leaves out basically all of the large herbivores that would have existed at the time, lmao.
IRL, most countries in Europe have at least two to three native deer species (roe, fallow, and red). other big herbivores native to Europe and staple in the gray wolf diet are moose, caribou, and European bison. recently-extinct/extirpated herbivores that would have been extant in the middle ages include the aurochs, tarpan, saiga antelope, and sometimes pyrenean ibex*. also wild boar, which are omnivores but very edible. hare, rabbit, and European beaver are also fair prey for a wolf. wolves are opportunists with diverse diets, and Europe’s faunal assemblage supports that!
meanwhile, in-game, you’ve got feral goats in Skellige, wild boar in HoS, one species of rabbit, and... one species of deer. and there aren’t even that many of the deer.
obviously modeling a functioning ecosystem is low on the list of priorities for a game dev, but from an ecological perspective this is INSANE. the Continent having only one cervid species, let alone only one large herbivore period, is absurd. the rule of thumb is each time you step up a trophic level in a food web, biomass decreases by a factor of ten—very simplistically, if you have 100 plants, you can have 10 deer and 1 wolf. there is no sustainable ecological scenario where eating monsters could compensate for the complete absence of a dozen or more species of herbivorous megafauna, especially when many of those monsters are on the same trophic level as wolves, and especially if we are also trying to explain a disproportionately large wolf population**.
thus i have to assume that the biggest part of the answer to “what are the wolves eating” is: there is no lack of natural prey items, the usual historical assemblage of big European herbivores are present and in abundance! you just don’t see them in the same way you don’t see Geralt traveling the full distance between Redania and Skellige. the single deer species we see is metaphorical for everything else that should also be hanging around. the alternative is total ecosystem collapse.
THAT SAID, wolves are absolutely also eating monsters!! wolves are opportunists, and if the Continent gives them the opportunity to eat monsters...well! nekkers i think might be a toss-up: i can totally picture wolves digging them out of places, but i can also picture a big enough nekker horde overwhelming a wolf pack, so that one’s probably situational. but ghouls and drowners absolutely oh my god. (sirens harassing coastal wolves for their kills like corvids??) particularly, wolf kill sites attract lots of smaller carnivores and scavengers like coyotes and foxes—and when wolves return to kill sites, they’ll kill smaller carnivores they find there (and sometimes eat them). wolves partially controlling necrophage populations by hunting them when they’re drawn to kill sites! (on the flip side, wolves are heavily risk-averse and will usually abandon kills to bears rather than defend; wolves on the Continent may be feeding on monsters but they’re probably also feeding monsters by having to abandon kills to big monsters like draconids. kleptoparasitic draconids!!!) (on the flip flip side, both wolves and bears will go after babies of the other species, and while a grown griffin could easily dominate a wolf kill site, little griffins (grifflets? grifflings? chicks?) probably have to be real careful about all the large predators stalking around the Continent.)
i am 98% sure anything that eats a rotfiend dies though.
* speaking of Iberian/Pyrenean ibexes—it’s off-topic because usually most wolf populations can’t get to them for the altitude, but Europe’s mountains are home to alpine ibex, Iberian ibex, and chamois, and there is no way that a) there aren’t similar populations in the witcherverse and b) mountain-dwelling draconids and harpies are not eating them!
** modern perspectives on how many wolves a healthy ecosystem can/should support are significantly skewed, and afaik we don’t have good numbers for what European wolf populations were like in the middle ages (historical ecology is very difficult and gets more difficult the further back you go). i found one source suggesting France alone had about 10,000 to 15,000 wolves before the 19th century—after about 400 years of state-sponsored efforts to hunt them all down. that’s a lot of wolves! the scale of TW3’s geography is fucky because it’s a video game, but i’m not necessarily convinced that the Continent’s wolf population is super inflated—at least, assuming that the large herbivores they should be eating do in fact exist. probably isn’t a hill i would die on one way or the other, just a thought worth considering!

The Kravinoffs
Konrad Kravinoff (Russian/German)
⁃ The oldest sibling, 34
⁃ Wears Alpine Ibex hide
⁃ The biggest asshole ever. He’s just such a dick and everyone hates him. Doesn’t help that he has the meanest resting bitch face ever
⁃ He’s very tough, but reckless and doesn’t look before he leaps, despite their dad specifically training them to do so
⁃ Very intimidating, I suggest not messing with him cause he once ripped out someone spine
⁃ He loves his siblings but he pretends like he doesn’t like them
Khulan Kravinoff (Russian/Mongolian)
⁃ 32
⁃ Wears Snow Leopard fur
⁃ Her mother was a Mongolian soldier, very big and tough. Seigi actually loved her mother, but she loved fighting for her country more and died doing it, so he took Khulan to his home and raised her
⁃ She’s just done with her siblings shit, they’re all feral and annoying as far as she’s concerned (minus Klara)
⁃ She’s more of an older sibling than Konrad is, maturity wise
Kaito Kravinoff (Russian/Japanese)
⁃ 30
⁃ Wears Sika Deer hide
⁃ This man is so happy and physically affectionate, his siblings all tease him and call him a bitch cause he acts like a literal dog. Like, not quite like Akira or Akami, he just has the personality of a dog
⁃ But he’s like a lazy and prissy dog. He doesn’t like to run (he gets out of breath going up the stairs at the palace), and he doesn’t getting dirty. He refuses to help clean the animals after they kill them cause the blood is gross
Kimora Kravinoff (Russian/Japanese)
⁃ 30
⁃ Wears Red Fox fur
⁃ Like the fox, she’s sneaky and clever. She likes to quietly approach someone and wait for them to turn around and freak out cause WHERE DID SHE COME FROM
⁃ She likes stealing things from your pockets and watching you look for them
⁃ She’s also quite the prankster, everyone’s always yelling at her to grow up and stop acting like a child, but nahhhh
Kabaka Kravinoff (Russian/African)
⁃ 28
⁃ Wears Hyena hide
⁃ Like the Hyena, he has a crazy laugh and always has a crazy look in his eyes
⁃ People always asks him if he’s on crack cause he talks to himself a lot. He’s just weird and extremely feral, will bite you if given the chance for absolutely no reason other than he felt like it
⁃ Kaito and Kimora call him ‘Baka’ and snicker everytime
Kija Kravinoff (Russian/Korean)
⁃ 22
⁃ Wears Amir Leopard fur
⁃ Dude thinks he’s a K-Pop star. He’s not.
⁃ He is a good singer, but he’s just so ridiculously dramatic and annoying, he really doesn’t have many girls fawning over him, but his ego is so big he doesn’t notice
⁃ Extremely flirty and calls their dad a man-whore. Only gets away with it cause Seigi’s just like ‘right back at ya bud’
⁃ He doesn’t know when to shut his mouth, he just keeps talking until he says the wrong thing and gets punched
Killian Kravinoff (Russian/Irish)
⁃ 18
⁃ Wears Red Deer hide
⁃ Very rowdy and obnoxious, nobody knows how he can successfully kill or steal anything cause he’s so fucking loud
⁃ Doesn’t help that he’s clumsy too, he’ll be sneaking in somewhere with his siblings and he’ll knock something over and it’ll be astronomically loud
⁃ Meme King, he’s viral on Tik Tok cause he posts fights within his siblings
⁃ Seigi also loved his mother, but she died of cancer when Killian was 2
Klara Kravinoff (Russian)
⁃ The youngest sibling, 16
⁃ Wears Siberian Tiger fur
⁃ The sweetest and calmest of her siblings, she’s an actual silent and strategic hunter. But she’s super nice, nobody can hate her
⁃ She also does ballet with Nina, they know each other from their classes together, then they found out they’re both from villain families and became good friends
⁃ Her mom was also a Viking, so they get along over that

Some of the wildlife I've designed for my Nyerla headworld so far! Here's some short info on all of them!
Jackalope: Basically hare-deer. Males have antlers, females have tusks. There's a domesticated variant of them, which often looks vastly different from their hare-like wild variants.
Nyerla ibex: Basically an Alpine ibex with fangs. Fang are used for self-defense and fighting other males; they're still herbivorous. Nyerla goats are the domesticated variant of these ibexes.
Mountain lion: Pseudo-feline predators that live in the high mountainous areas. One of the main predators of Nyerla ibexes. They have an armadillo-like structure on their back that makes them look like a pile of rocks if they're rolled up.
Shield cat: A smaller cousin of the mountain lion. They live in semi-arid climates and hunt smaller animals.
Wyvern: Basically the Nyerla equivalent of birds. If there's a bird species on our planet, in Nyerla it's bound to have a wyvern species that corresponds to it. Wyverns come in many different shapes and sizes, some of which have been (semi-)domesticated.
Wyrm: Think snakes but with fluffy backsides. They're not venomous, but their saliva contains a ton of bacteries that will lead to infections in most cases if left untreated.
Padamalon: It's a deer-wallaby. Males sprout antlers, females have pouches to carry their young in. Fur coat and markings are that of fallow deer. The name is literally a pun on pademelon (a type of wallaby) and Dama dama, the scientific name for fallow deer.
Hogena: You do NOT want to fuck with these dudes. Giant hyena-boars that are very easily provoked and one of the deadliest creatures one can encounter in Nyerla.
I may do a post like this for the domesticated creatures once I've gathered enough!

Come Snow, Come Sunshine
Day 2 of 31 Days of Ineffables challenge by @drawlight: Snow. Late, but I think I can be forgiven since I finally finished a Certain Fic today.
Tumblr media
The world, despite all expectations, continued on. The seas remained saltwater and not technically bloody, despite the deaths of coal reefs. The stars remained in the sky, when the smog and light pollution allowed them to be visible. In England, late summer became crisp autumn and an angel and a demon started to wear thicker coats and scarves and meet for cups of tea in museums, concerts and dinners and late night drinks, and nothing changed.
Well, not nothing, Aziraphale thought. There was no subterfuge, no elaborate excuses for meeting up. If they went to feed the ducks, they did so because they bloody well felt like feeding ducks. More and more when he turned to meet Crowley's gaze it was full of unabashed affection, and the demon didn't look away when he noticed Aziraphale looking back.
But when they walked, Crowley thrust his hands into his pockets and Aziraphale clasped his in front of him or behind him, and neither of them reached for the other's hand. Aziraphale had always secretly thought they had done that to avoid the temptation of reaching out, but perhaps the temptation was always only on his side. When they said goodnight, it was with friendly smiles, and then they turned away, untouching.
Aziraphale had spent at least four hundred years thinking that it was fear of the consequences that stopped Crowley pushing him against the nearest hard surface to ravish him. Over the last four weeks he was beginning to think what was stopping Crowley doing so was the lack of any pronounced desire to ravish him in the first place.
It was maddening.
"So, good night then," Crowley said, leaning back and swaying on the heels of his feet at the door to the book shop. "I expect you have work to get on with."
"Always." Aziraphale hesitated. "What are your plans?"
"Going to get my head down for a bit. It's exhausting, all this not doing work."
"Well, you should know, you slothful thing," Aziraphale said indulgently, hoping Crowley could hear the silent pleas of Kiss me good night, come here, embrace me, hold me close. He could do it himself, he supposed, but every time he tried to imagine it, the kiss was awkward, clumsy, awful. He wasn't the tempter. He shouldn't have to make the first move when there was an actual demon there, for Heaven's sake.
Unless the demon didn't want to in the first place.
Crowley started to turn away, and Aziraphale felt he had to say something, anything, to break this stalemate and stop them going on exactly the same for another two hundred years.
"Let's go to Australia."

or keep reading
Crowley spun back, raised eyebrows visible over his glasses. "What? Why?"
"I thought a change would be nice," Aziraphale said weakly.
"Well, yeah, if you want to. Sure. But why Australia? You hate Australia. I've never been able to get you to go there before."
Aziraphale wasn't sure why. He had just said the first place that came to the top of his head. "Well, winter is coming, and you know how grumpy it makes you." It was only the beginning of autumn, really, but that hardly mattered. "I just thought the Southern Hemisphere might suit you better. And they have the oldest extant vineyards in the world, you know. We could do a vineyard tour. Cuddle a koala." Actually, that was a lovely idea. Aziraphale hugged himself, thinking of it. They looked so damn fluffy.
"Sure, yeah, if that's what you want, angel," Crowley said amenably. "I'll arrange it." He hesitated, his breath making visible puffs of condensation in the air. It was hard to tell with his dark glasses on, but he seemed to be staring at where Aziraphale's arms were wrapped around his overcoated middle "Why do you hate Australia, anyway?"
"Too many snakes. I can't abide snakes."
"Well, that's just cruel." Crowley's smile was warmer than the Australian sun must be, now, and Aziraphale could feel the unshuttered love beaming from it. Still Crowley didn't step closer.
"Too many deserts," Aziraphale said at last. "And they have a lot of floods."
"I'll take you somewhere with no deserts or floods," Crowley promised, voice thick, and surely now...
Crowley turned away. "I'll call you when I've made the arrangements."
Aziraphale stood, looking after him, and perhaps it was blasphemous to breathe a prayer to the Almighty over this. Still. She had seemed to save them both from the wrath of Heaven and Hell. Please, Father, if it is Your will, let Australia work, he asked her quietly. Crowley was a creature of Love once.
Let us feel safe to love each other.
"I have to admit this was not what I expected of Australia in the spring," Aziraphale said, looking at the expanses of pure white snow.
Crowley, standing on the balcony of the chalet, laughed gleefully, as if the entire place was his invention. "Spring snow is the best. Corn snow, they call it, and it's so thick and soft. And the sunshine, Aziraphale. Snow and sunshine. Isn't it a glorious planet, this Earth of ours?"
Crowley had actually shed his jacket, and was standing with bare, strong arms under the golden sunlight, the blue cloudless sky lighting up his hair with red fire, as he stood black as coal against all the white snow, his yellow eyes gleaming, a slender dark thing with glowing hair. He was so unselfconsciously beautiful he took Aziraphale's breath away.
"Lovely," the angel said warmly, meaning the sunshine, the snow, the survival of the world, everything. Crowley most of all. Aziraphale moved to stand closer to him, looking down from the balcony.
One of the reasons the sky was such a perfect deep blue was that the alpine village was situated on the top of the mountain, rather than below the ski runs. When Aziraphale looked down, he could see wisps of clouds down below them. He shuffled a little closer, wishing Crowley would put an arm around him. Maybe he should move first. He felt frozen, despite the warmth.
"Do you miss it?" Crowley asked quietly.
Aziraphale didn't pretend not to know what he meant. "Not really. I never fit in there. And you are right, the music from the celestial choirs is incredibly dull."
Crowley chuckled, and moved even closer. His bare arm almost brushed Aziraphale's jacket arm. "Hell is, well, hell, but I like this world. The worst thing about Heaven was missing you while we were in different choirs."
Maybe the air was colder than Aziraphale had thought, because it was hurting his lungs. "I wasn't even created before the Holy War."
"I missed you anyway," Crowley said. It was a stupid thing to say really, it didn't actually make any sense. Warmth was shooting through Aziraphale anyway, scalding his skin red. Maybe it worked, he thought, light-headed. Maybe getting away from familiar places and familiar patterns let them change them, let Crowley say things he would never say back in London.
Maybe, if Crowley could be brave, so could Aziraphale. He bit his lip, wondering what would happen if he turned and kissed those long, thin lips. Long and thin and beautiful, like everything about the demon.
"Come inside and look around properly," Crowley said, and dragged him off by the arm.
This was new, too. No actual skin contact, but it was still touching, and Crowley didn't release his arm as he showed him the living areas, the kitchen--"Not that we'll need it, angel, there are plenty of restaurants"--the five bedrooms (a little disappointing, Aziraphale thought, having images of one small room and shared sleeping space and what was he even thinking, he didn't sleep), the eight-person jet spa, the double sided fireplace, all with as much pride as if the demon had created them personally.
He's trying so hard, Aziraphale realised. He's wrapped this chalet up like a box of chocolates. He is so desperate for me to like it all.
"I love it," he said sincerely, even though it was all too bright and white and uncluttered for his tastes. At least the fireplace was enticing. Aziraphale imagined snuggling up under a rug with Crowley, and shivered. There was a day bed perfect for Crowley to sprawl over, and two dining rooms in case they chose to use in-house dining rather than the restaurants.
"There's plenty up here in the village, and another alpine village just fifteen minutes down the mountain by snow-taxi," Crowley said. "The restaurants perhaps aren't up to your standard, but a change is as good as a holiday, right? And the glühwein, the glühwein is great." There was an anxious pucker between his black brows, and Aziraphale wanted to reach out and smooth it with his fingertips.
"It's all wonderful. Thank you, Crowley." Perhaps more had changed than he thought. He could thank Crowley now, and get a brilliant grin instead of defensiveness.
"Let's go to lunch," Crowley said, blushing under the grin.
Aziraphale made him put his jacket back on first. It wasn't remotely cold, despite all the gleaming snow, but it wasn't as warm as all that, and he didn't want his snake sluggish and sleepy. Yet.
Crowley chattered cheerfully about where to go for lunch as they headed out. "And then you can ski."
"I am not skiing. I intend to sit with a good book and watch you make a fool of yourself." Aziraphale resisted the urge to take great handfuls of the snow and push it into his mouth. While he was unlikely to be ill, snow never tasted as sugary fresh as it looked.
"I will be fabulous at skiing. I was back in the old days in the Altai Mountains, hunting ibex. There's a pretty good likeness of me on a cave painting."
"I doubt that. My dear, I've seen you walk."
"Exactly! I'm naturally swishy," Crowley said, moving ahead and demonstrating, his hips indeed swishing gracefully from side to side in the most fascinating manner. "Skiing comes naturally to someone as graceful--"
Crowley's ridiculous snakeskin feet slid out from under him, his arms grasped in vain at the air, and he tumbled backwards into a snowdrift.
"Crowley." Aziraphale was laughing too hard to be properly concerned, but he did bend over him. "Oh, you adorable idiot."
"I'm--what?" Crowley's had lost his glasses in the tumble. His eyes were wide and startled, the yellow expanded to hide the whites.
Oh, no. If anything would hurt Crowley's pride more than being called nice, it had to be being called adorable. "I'm sorry." He started to draw back. "You should get up, your trousers are hardly waterproof."
Crowley reached up, and clasped the side of his head in bare hands, preventing the retreat. "You have snow on your eyelashes, angel. I must have splattered you."
"Really?" Aziraphale whispered, held by the gentle hands on his face as if they were the hands of Atlas himself.
"It suits you. It's... adorable. Just like you. My angel."
Aziraphale lowered his face instinctively, and Crowley tilted his back, and their mouths met and caught together. The kiss was chaste, just a long gentle pressure of mouths, but Aziraphale knew, deep in his soul, that the world was now divided into before and after the kiss. He sighed against it, and felt a surprisingly delicate tongue in response, dancing across his just for a moment.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted to tell you that and kiss you," Crowley said, when their mouths had parted.
"I think I do," Aziraphale said softly, and Crowley pulled him in tight, wrapped his arms around him as if he would never let him go. And it was bliss.
"You're going to get soaked by the snow," Aziraphale said at last.
"Don't care," Crowley muttered.
"I care. Let's get you home, out of those clothes and warmed in front of the fire."
Crowley shivered, but it seemed to be from happiness. "Kiss me again, first? Kiss me and kiss me and kiss me."
"Back at the chalet," Aziraphale said firmly. "And then--I'll kiss you forever, if you like."
"Oh, I like," Crowley said fervently. "Oh, don't you just love--snow?"
"I do," whispered Aziraphale, kissing his cheek. "I truly, truly do."

Hey! Just wanted to say I love your characterization and the way you write, they are always so... Fulfilling and wonderful. If you've ever read His Dark Materials/The Golden Compass, what Daemons do you think the Naruto peers would have? Have a good day!
Thank you! And I have read His Dark Materials, and also gotten this question re: Konoha 12/their sensei/the jinchuuriki before, so I hope you don’t mind me reusing the same answer.
Since a lot of the Konoha shinobi have animal motifs, it feels a bit like cheating to use those, but they do fit the character the way they’re supposed to, so.
Kakashi: wolf-dogSakura: barn owlSasuke: black catNaruto: Corsac foxKurenai: lyrebirdHinata: pygmy marmoset Shino: carpenter beeKiba: red setter (if we’re not counting Akamaru)
Asuma: sun bearChoji: giant armadilloShikamaru: stagIno: golden pheasant
