Confession, not an imagine:

I had so many undiagnosed autoimmune issues that when I was a child- I straight up did the symptom math wrong and thought I was a vampire. Like, oh. Unusually ashy and pale for my skin tone? Check. Allergic to silver, garlic, and sunlight? Check. Extreme light sensitivity in general? Check. Got sick the one time I went into a church? Check (it was the incense). Iron deficiency that makes me crave blood? Check. Plus some funny non-disorder coincidences like having sharp canines and a good sense of night vision.

Now, I’m just imagining how funny it would be in a fictional setting. If I were talking with a vampire, and the entire time I think they coincidentally have the same laundry list of immune issues and the entire time they think I’m a fellow vampire.

there’s something so special about seeing yourself in a character- i truly resonate so deeply with ellie for so many reasons and i thought i would just talk about that for a bit because i think it’s really cool 🫶

-her relationship with joel mirrors that of me and my dad, the first time he called ellie “babygirl” i cried because that’s what my dad used to call me. my dad had pretty bad anger issues that passed onto me, and he was so hard on me my whole childhood. but the only thing he hated more than me messing up, was someone else hurting me. he always got himself into bad situations to protect me, and would do anything to protect me. he would lie like crazy to keep me in the dark and away from the atrocities of the world, just like joel did.

-her relationship with dina struck me too, the way she loved her so deeply. ellie goes all in when it comes to emotions ive noticed, much like i do. she would do anything to protect dina, including leaving her. the scene where dina tells ellie shes pregnant hit me so hard, because she cares so much about dina and yet she gets angry and hostile because she’s so upset.

-this is a bit of a jump- but the way she wanted her immunity to mean something. i have a lot of times in my life where i will go through hell to get something, and if it doesn’t end up working out i feel useless. i always have to be the bigger person and help others; much like how ellie wanted to make a cure, even if it would kill her

Hi!

Due to personal reasons I wasn’t able to watch the 60th DW anniversary episodes when they aired. But now I’m caught up on everything and I have some thoughts and questions(?) about the Doctor and Donna’s famous platonic relationship.

And I think I need a bit of clarification first. Everyone likes to talk about their friendship, their platonic relationship, about them being platonic soulmates… And yes that is true, especially after the 60th anniversary. However I always assumed, when they met the second time (s4e1), Donna tried to find the Doctor, not just because she wanted to go on an adventure, but also because she was somewhat attracted to him as well.???

But I guess I read her character and the situation in e1 of s4 completely wrong, because I used to think her saying that he is an alien streak of nothing and she would never consider him in a romantic manner, especially in the moment immediately after him stating he just wants a friend, was more a way to protect herself and her feelings than anything else.

Don’t get me wrong I love their friendship and I’m glad she didn’t pine for him like some other companions did. But saying it was platonic from the very start for both of them always seemed wrong to me.?🤔

As I mentioned I just finished watching the anniversary episodes and although I loooved them, a part of me is a tiny bit annoyed that the fandom (not the DW fandom overall, but the Donna x Doctor fans) readily embraced the “they are just friends” scenario. I mean in truth there is nothing to complain about really, we got a happy ending and I never expected them to become canon in the first place. (The Doctor rarely has real romantic relationships in canon anyway, except when he does...🙄) But even people who shipped them before, are now just basking in this platonic setting they presented us, and push the Donna x Doctor idea away. At least it seems like this to me.

And I know their relationship is super special nonetheless. They are soulmates! But I guess I wanted more for Donna... She always seemed like a very passionate person. Someone who deserved something special in every area of her life. Someone who would have or would want to have passion, something special and meaningful when it comes to their love life as well. And her relationship with Shaun just doesn’t look like it is something like this. But of course we only witnessed a small part of their life and they are already married for 15 years. Plus relationships don’t have to be loud, dramatic and flashy to be happy and fulfilled. But the words Donna used to talk about Shaun and their marriage are somewhat telling in my opinion. Moreover I would dare to argue that it is very obvious that he loves her a lot more than she loves him…

I just know if they had set up the relationship between the Doctor and Donna differently from the very beginning, gave it more room for interpretation, this whole arc, where they are separated for over a decade and then found each other again could have been a great love story. I mean it is, a great love story, but you know what I’m getting at.

In the end it is probably the best to remind myself that DW isn’t about sappy love stories anyway...🤷‍♀️

Sorry you didn’t get to watch the 60th specials until recently, as there’s always a buzz to watching stuff sort of along with other people.

Ah, the ‘platonic relationship’ that many non-shippers refer to; which is their right to do so, but you won’t find me thinking that way. Donna was not immune to the Doctor’s looks, she just chose to ignore the issue. After all, why did she react with a knee-jerk panic when he mentioned wanting a mate? It certainly hit a nerve, caused by past experience, or secretly liking the look of him. “They fell for each other” David Tennant said about the Doctor and Donna at the end of The Runaway Bride so it is perfectly valid to assume she wasn’t just seeking a quick trip in the TARDIS when she sought him out. I mean, a whole year? For someone you aren’t attracted to? That’s a long time to look for someone you’re just after a job/experience from.

She called him a long streak of nothing to stop him thinking she fancied him, because she didn’t want to embarrass herself by being rejected. She wanted a meaningful relationship, not a quick bunk up.

During the 50th anniversary celebrations, they interviewed some of the past Doctors about how they felt about the romantic angle that occurs in nu!Who. Apart from the general disgust romance was included, Peter Davison said an interesting thing. He felt certain that, if Donna had been given another series with the Doctor, they’d have ended up in a physical non-platonic relationship (shall we say). But DT did state once that the Doctor is asexual, so take from that what you will.

The biggest obstacle for TenxDonna shippers where the Fourteenth Doctor is concerned is Shaun Temple. Do you condone  adultery and ship them, kick Shaun out of the way somehow, or leave them as platonic best friends? It’s a conundrum, but most of the shippers I know have decided the marriage between Donna and Shaun had ended long ago and they are hanging on to their tepid relationship by the skin of their teeth, just because of Rose Temple. In RL this would be true; so I’m perfectly happy to go along with it.

I completely agree with you: Shaun loves Donna a lot more than she loves him. You don’t describe your husband as merely ‘nice’; and she only said “I love you” to his face to get him to take Rose to safety. As Wilf said in the café, she was making do, and her chat with Sylvia about missing someone underlines that fact.

RTD wrote The Runaway Bride as a romcom gone wrong. There are even aspects of that in Partners In Crime. The companion in S4 was supposed to be the love of the Doctor’s lives; and when CT was cast that plan was ditched and Rose Tyler was promoted into that spot, for a while. Hmm. Makes you think, eh? Because all that has been sort of reversed thanks to the 60th anniversary specials. Their reunion could have been a great love story, but under the supervision of RTD it was never going to be that, let’s be honest here. He has always had an ulterior agenda to shoehorn Rose into everything, and he managed it through the metacrisis resolution.

Just remind yourself, love, that although Doctor Who has never been about sappy love stories (can’t upset the watching sexist dads, can we), the fanfiction has ALWAYS been dominated by sappy love stories; and long may it continue to do so! 😉☺️

"hey baby!" you chirped. soobin walked over to where you were sat in the living room and took the spot next to you. "hey sunshine!" soobin responded with his bright smile, his voice light and cheery as he wrapped his arm around you and placed a kiss to the top of your scalp.

"how was work today?" you ask.

"eh, same as usual." he responded before unfolding his arm from around you and began to rest his head on your lap, his usual ritual when he's especially tired. "i'm just glad to be home with you." he breaths out.

after a while soobin rubs his head against your stomach and you giggle at the feeling. soobin turns his head and looks at you expectantly and raises his eyebrow.

you cock your head to the side curiously and run your hand through his hair experimentally, "whats wrong soobie?" you mumbled. instead of a verbal response soobin keened into your touch which you took as a signal to keep going.

OUUGHH.. THANK YOU.... maybe i could share the outline for SOME of their fic. since it wont be until like next year that its readable because i have two issues. 1. ooo what if i did it THIS way instead.. and 2. i must finish it before i share any of it

fic takes place 3 years after the events of the game !!!!!!

afhiri is not officially moved in with gale but spends all their fucking time at the tower anyway when at waterdeep. moved in without making it official essentially because the officially pushes afhiri away

the start has afhiri returning from an adventure to find gale isn't home, so they spend their time busking on waterdeeps streets and sleeping in alleyways (refused a key to the tower when offered) until gale returns..... when gale returns afhiri takes notices and charges him at full force. he lets afhiri know he found something and wants to show her it. they return to the tower and he closes everything up and reveals an artefact to her from deep within a lost crypt

a large part of their relationship is afhiri's fascination and interest in his magic and his research - not because she loves power but because she thinks its cool and pretty. so gale seeks to constantly find new ways to impress her - even though a simple fucking fireball can still do that - he needs to outdo himself and convinces himself it's for them

upon fucking with the artefact, gale is possessed by Something that was trapped within it. and afhiri doesn't realise. cue chapters of afhiri not understanding why gale is different, gale internal monologues and intellectual (and sometimes not) debates with whatever is possessing him, and this being pretending to be with gale to essentially fuck with and control afhiri

i never explored The Horrors with afhiri - they're essentially immune to everything that happens in the game. not even what happens with gale traumatises afhiri in any way because afhiri didn't like him like that during that time. just thought it sucked bro. also maybe wanted to stab mystra because she's a cop

afhiri isn't even the one that saves gale from the possession - tara is, who recogonises it's not him immediately and saves the day. and afhiri still doesn't realise. when gale is happy to be free again and reaches for afhiri, they retreat away.

unfortunately during the Hurt ArcTM, afhiri is killed. dw the clown is rezzed but. it is hard on afhiri (this is where we get the only candor scene in the fic <3)

so the next part of the fic after The Horrors is an exercise in learning to trust again. helping afhiri understand what happened and being gentle with them. we had the hurt here comes the comfort

it is only after this happens that afhiri wants to get serious with gale. this is when AFHIRI proposes to gale. knowing how immensely important this moment is, gale agrees to everything she says. afhiri wants to be married. just be married. no wedding day, no being engaged. lets just be married now. he agrees, he deals with all the paper work the next day. they're married now :) . you have to know i cried when writing this scene :D

however during the Comfort ArcTM gale is unfortunately struck with some hubris. as he is wont to do. the realisation of how fragile their lives are. how afhiri is going to out live him. how easy it is for him to hurt her, what if this happened again? he can't have that, he can't have any of this. afhiri can't die, and he can't die and leave afhiri alone. obviously they need to fix that.

during this part of the fic gale convinces afhiri to seek immortality with him - and through his pursuit of immortality and has more hubris caused thoughts where he once again thinks of divinity, thinks of ascension. if they're gods, they can't ever be harmed. that's the only way to make sure they'll be together for eternity

1. how long have i known about them

I'd heard vaguelly about him on DW retrospectives but then I watched season 7 and thought 'he seems nice'. With each subsequent season, I adored him even more. Apparently I wasn't the only one; several hundred women in a factory up north wrote into the BBC demanding Benton be in more stories XD

10. my favorite moment with them in canon

It's a toss-up between Benton managing to stop Yates during the latter's brief indoctrination-into-eco-fascism, and Three telling Benton he makes one of the best coffees in the universe (I'm a sucker for the other characters being sweet to Benton, which is also why I love when Jo Grant refers to him as 'the lovely Sergeant Benton' in a letter she sends to UNIT after she leaves). But basically any moment where Benton is on-screen is my favourite moment. He's such a sweet bean.

14. what i liked about the way canon portrayed them

I love how it was originally a bit-part but the cast and crew liked John Levene so much he got to do more and more over time. I especially like how he goes from getting the short straw from Yates constantly (never quite forgave Yates for stealing Benton's sandwiches that time by pulling rank) to getting the last laugh. Not to mention how it's a canon fact that basically everyone likes him and knows him to be a fundamentally good person; the Doctor is suspicious of everyone during that dinosaur serial except Benton, because they knew Benton would never betray them. Even the Master respects how earnest and resourceful Benton is.

Also, love the little insights into his personal life, like how he takes his little sister to ballroom dancing lessons. If we're talking the novels, he also seems immune (like Dan Lewis) to attempts at mind control; the himbo power is strong in Benton!

15. what i dont like about the way canon portrayed them

I don't like how he ends his last appearance unconscious on the floor and the Fourth Doctor doesn't even bother to make sure he's okay. Bit of an unfair ending, in my opinion (one of the early reasons I had for not liking Four as much as I like Three and Five).

Also, don't like how the Brigadier clearly doesn't pay Benton enough; he has to deal with a lot of nonsense that is clearly well above his pay grade (not to mention the Brigadier being a jerk to him on several occasions).

Personally, I like the idea of Benton being involved in 'Mawdryn Undead'. Mainly because it would be nice for him to get a proper send-off, but also because (as neither of them were in the army anymore) he would have been able to tell the Brigadier to stop being a jerk. Bonus points if he also defends Tegan and Nyssa when the Brigadier was being a chauvinist to them (I know Tegan and Nyssa would have gotten along well with Benton, because that man CHUGS the respect women juice).
