— DAICHI

↘ You looked at Google Maps again on your phone and then entered Karasuno High School, looking around carefully.

↘ You literally never were here, so you felt lost, but you decided to go into the school and ask someone for directions to the gym if it will be necessary.

↘ Thank God, you noticed three first years who were just leaving the big building. You greeted them and asked where you should go to meet the Karasuno volleyball team. You even corrected your hair, smiling sweetly.

↘ Needless to say, one of the boys got a nosebleed when he saw you and the other two blushed, pointing only to the direction of the side exit. After moving away from the three high school teenagers, you only managed to hear the quiet ‘Wasn’t she a student or something?’, but you didn’t have time to react to that apt remark.

↘ You finally got to the large gym, so you decided to go inside. You noticed that the team was in training, so the black-haired girl noticed you as first. She was a bit taller than you, but she also looked super lovely, so you smiled at her and greeted her, asking if you could wait for Daichi. The team manager nodded at you, blushing furiously as she realized you were a bit older than she was. (Kiyoko immediately recognized the school coat of arms on your jacket from the Women’s College she wanted to go too.)

↘ “OOOOH. WELCOME, WELCOME.” A low voice echoed in the gymnasium and you glanced at the boy with a shaved head who was running towards you with another a bit small teen. “ARE YOU A KIYOKO-SAN’S FRIEND?!”

↘ You didn’t know what was going on right now, so you said ‘No’ and immediately started looking for your boyfriend. Thank God, Daichi was already walking towards you, blushing as much as Kiyoko before.

↘ “Y/N? What are you doing here?” He smiled, scratching his neck and you shrugged.

↘ “I wanted to see your training. Surprise? I think.” You laughed softly as you walked over to him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “After your training we can go get some food, my treat, Captain.”

↘ The rest of the team was shocked because a) Daichi had a girlfriend; b) An older girl; c) Super cute and tiny girlfriend who dominated him in two freaking seconds.

↘ Only the third years knew about Suga’s relationship with you, so the rest of the team didn’t know who you are when you approached to them during the Spring High National Tournament, asking they were are Karasuno High School team.

↘ Tanaka and Nishinoya had a nosebleed and fell in love with you at first sight, and the first years didn't know what to say. You literally couldn't get along with them. You were lost and you missed your lovely babyboy.

↘ “Umm, so... I guess I mistook the High Schools, I’m sorry.” You muttered awkwardly and was about to leave when the libero denied it and stopped you.

↘ “You’re not wrong, angel. How can we help you?” You laughed under your breath at his words, nodding.

↘ “So, thanks. I’m looking for Koushi. He’s on this team, right?”

↘ “Are you his little sister? Aww, you can call me Ryuu-senpai. I’ll be glad.” You literally saw little hearts flying above his head.

↘ “No. Not really.” You replied amused and suddenly felt a gentle tapping on your shoulder. You turned, look up and instantaneously smiled when you saw your two years younger boyfriend. You hug him tightly. “Koushi, baby.”

↘ “You didn’t have to come. After all, you have a lot of exams at the university.” He muttered, though his voice was so happy and he was so relieved that you are here with him.

↘ “U-university...” Tanaka began, feeling his cheeks turn redder and redder.

↘ “Hey, guys. She’s my girlfriend. Be nice to her! And show her some respect! She’s in the second year of studies.”

↘ The whole team (except for the whole third year) was impressed.

↘ On the other hand, you hugged the gray-haired boy even closely and informed him that he had to come to your house after the game because you wanted pizza and some kisses.

↘ “... I-I didn’t know that Azumane-san has a girlfriend.” Kageyama said softly and blushed hard, looking at orange-haired friend who looked at you closely.

↘ “She attend to our school? Hmm...” Hinata asked under his breath, but the lack of a Karasuno High School uniform was misleading. “I don’t think so...”

↘ “I didn’t think that senpai liked first years.” Tsukishima laughed as he walked past the two shorter boys with Yamaguchi. “It’s almost illegal, don’t y’all think? I don’t want to believe that any girl has likes someone who looks like a criminal.”

↘ “Hey, kids.” Daichi’s voice made the four juniors turn to him and Sugawara. “Y/N-san is older than all of us and actually is in her first year of college. You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” He smiled heartily as he patted them on the back. “Now go to school and better prepare yourself for a solid warm-up after your lessons thanks to this gossips.”

↘ At the same time, you informed your boyfriend that you would come to his training because your classes at the university that day were supposed to end sooner. (What an awkward situation for firsts years who apologized to you on knees for things who you literally don’t mind...)

Muay Thai: 1.13

“I can’t believe you’ve done this,” said Agatha acidly as Nairi held the door to the pizza place open for her.

“I’m sorry,” said Nairi, no longer feeling particularly apologetic after a week of saying nothing but. “We’ll only be here for what, an hour? And then we can go.”

She didn’t love that she was already on edge. It was hardly the first time in her life that she was deliberately sitting down to spend a couple of hours with an unpleasant man, but it was still frustrating. She liked spending time with Agatha and Linden who were only occasionally frustrating, but they tended to get tense and catty with each other, and Nairi’s teeth were aching at the thought of dealing with that on top of Simon.

Well. They were usually catty, but when not talking about relationships they could be relied on to be friendly-catty rather than terse-catty.

Linden was sitting alone at one of the tall tables near the centre of the restaurant, and she waved at them as they approached, her smile wide. “Hey guys!” she said as Nairi sat down across from her, and if her smile was fake then she at least sounded pleased—or, well, relieved, at any rate.

“No boyfriend yet?” asked Agatha archly, sitting next to Nairi with a disapproving curve to her lips as their eyes met.

“He’s running late,” said Linden, clasping her hands together in front of her and making her bracelets jingle. “Promised he’d treat me to a nice big pie and dessert to make it up to me, though!”

“Nice of him,” said Nairi, snagging a complimentary breadstick, more out of habit than hunger.

“Very,” said Agatha, inspecting a menu without looking up.

Linden’s expression faltered. “Yeah,” she said anyway.

Nairi knocked their ankles together under the table in an attempt to reassure, and Linden flashed her a grateful look, the tension across her shoulders loosening a little. “Things are going well then?” she asked, pouring herself a glass of water and pushing the jug towards Agatha, who ignored her.

“As well as they can be,” said Linden, nodding a little too much, her bracelets jingling again. “I mean, things get bumpy occasionally, but we really haven’t known each other for long in like, the grand scheme of things. We already know we like each other, so we’re just feeling everything else out as we go.”

“Oh goodie,” muttered Agatha, pushing her glasses up her nose again before setting the menu down and joining the conversation. “Nick likes this one, then?”

Linden snorted. “Simon’s not that exceptional,” she said dismissively. “Nick thinks he’s too flaky.”

Agatha glanced at her watch conspicuously. “I wonderwhy.”

Linden gave her a sharp curve of a smile, darkly amused. “Look, that might be a dealbreaker for Nick, but he’s not the one dating him. I can handle a little flakiness, and besides, he’s working on it.”

“Is he working on anything else?”

“Yes,” said Linden, looking Agatha right in the eye. “Nick told me—I promise he won’t call you that ever again, I even slapped him around a little to make it stick.”

“Right,” said Agatha, unimpressed in the face of Linden’s humour. “Because if he does then I’m just going to leave. Why does he even talk like that in the first place?”

Linden wrinkled her nose. “It’s his masters, I swear, he spends his entire time with his nose up the ass of these old school poets, and then he like, forgets that language has changed in the last eighty years? It’s really annoying, he literally called me the ‘whore of Babylon’ the other day and then got offended when I told him to fuck off because I ‘didn’t get the compliment’.”

Nairi snorted.

“Oh! Such a catch! I suddenly understand why you’re so determined to make this relationship work,” drawled Agatha.

“It’s a better basis for a relationship than some I could name,” said Linden snidely, narrowing her eyes across the table.

Damn, Agatha’s last boyfriend must have been a real piece of work. “There’s always going to be worse relationships out there,” said Nairi diplomatically. “And I mean, people are even meeting and dating on the internet these days, everything starts somewhere.”

“Exactly,” said Linden, relaxing a little with a grin. “That’s a bad basis, we all know the internet’s for porn and arguing with strangers.”

“And LOLcats, don’t forget those,” said Agatha, nodding at her.

“How could I?” said Linden, her grin widening.

Nairi was saved from having to ask what the fuck a ‘LOLcat’ was by Simon’s arrival. “Hello ladies,” he said breezily, draping his coat over the back of the free chair with a waft of eau-de-cigarette over the table. He leaned in and kissed Linden’s cheek from behind before sitting. “Hello babe, sorry I’m late, transport was a bit of an issue.”

“You’re fine,” said Linden, smiling indulgently at him as he sat. “Just gave us time to work up an appetite.”

Thankfully, the process of deciding on pizzas and drinks, and then the conveying all of that information to the waitress meant that Nairi didn’t have to speak directly to Simon. It also meant that he didn’t try to speak with Agatha, who was coolly ignoring him from across the table with a total lack of eye contact that veered dangerously close to the border between ‘civility’ and ‘rudeness’.

Once the food actually arrived however, she was out of luck.

Pretty much every pizza on the menu that wasn’t explicitly vegetarian had some kind of bacon or ham or pork-based sausage in its toppings, so there wasn’t any quibbling or half-and-halfing on the one Nairi was sharing with Agatha. Simon, however, had ordered without asking Linden, which she’d ignored, much the same way she’d ignored Agatha’s quiet snort at him doing so. Nairi was about ninety percent certain Linden didn’t even like green peppers.

“So,” said Simon brightly, gesturing across the table with his wine glass. “How have you two been this week? Anything exciting?”

Agatha took an enormous bite of pizza and chewed loudly, glancing at Nairi. Nairi sighed internally and lowered her own slice to answer him. “Not terribly exciting. Work, mostly.”

“That’s right,” he said, chewing obnoxiously and giving Nairi a chance to start eating. Next to him, Linden was carefully tugging peppers off the surface of her pizza. “Lindy said you did some kind of fighting thing, right? MMA? Kickboxing? Sweaty punch ups in sports bras?”

“…I teach judo,” said Nairi eventually. “Early days at my dojo, I don’t have a lot of students yet, I’m afraid. Uh, Agatha’s working on a paper at the moment though, that’s a bit more interesting.”

“Really? What’s it about?” asked Simon, turning both his attention and his chewing maw towards Agatha.

“Diatomic elements,” said Agatha shortly. “It’s just about nucleics, I’m not reinventing the wheel or anything.”

Simon stared at her blankly. “Oh, of course. Uh, I’m afraid I’m not familiar, is your field—?”

“Chemistry,” supplied Agatha, turning her attention back to her dinner. “My PhD was on inorganic, but I’m still in the process of post-doc applications so I’m mostly twiddling my thumbs and writing contributions in the meanwhile.”

“Right,” said Simon, his face showing a total lack of comprehension. “Academia’s a lot like that, terribly stiff in the paperwork and appropriateness departments. The right body of work and all that—I know exactly how it feels, I was going to do my thesis on the erotic underpinnings of Virginia Woolf’s work and the reflection of her relationship with her husband, but my advisor was really very pushy about playing it safe and sticking to Eliot’s body of work in the immediate post-war era.”

“Oh yes, much safer,” said Agatha with no inflection in her tone.

Simon laughed loudly, leaning back in his chair and taking another long drink of his wine. “You know, Lindy said you had a sense of humour, and I must confess I didn’t quite believe her at first! Mistakes all around.”

He punctuated this with a conspiratorial wink across the table at her, though Nairi didn’t quite understand what was so funny about it. At a glance, neither did Agatha or Linden. Linden actually looked… embarrassed? It was only for a second, the expression gone almost as soon as Nairi noticed it, Linden covering the bottom half of her face with her glass as she took a sip.

“So how long have you two lovebirds been dating anyway?” Simon continued, not even glancing at Linden next to him with her small pile of peppers or his ignored slice of pizza on the plate in front of him.

“A few months,” said Nairi, her own dinner looking more unappetising by the second. “Since September, I think?”

“That’s about right,” said Agatha, the lines around the corners of her eyes easing as she glanced at Nairi. “Five or six months now.”

“Charming,” said Simon, polishing off his wine, smile bright and enthusiastic as he gestured. “You know I’ve always greatly enjoyed the figure of the lesbian, in real life as well as literature. Excising the men from the bed and the home—it’s always so representative of the purest form of womanhood, really illuminates the truth of femininity. And the politics of it! The ultimate commitment to the feminist ideal, the usurpation of the patriarchy from its most foundational stronghold in the home at the head of the family. Really brilliant stuff!”

Agatha’s eyebrows were somewhere around her hairline.

Linden laughed awkwardly, nudging Simon as she leaned in a little over her plate. “Well, I mean, it’s always gonna be a bit different from books, hun. People are people, real life is always more, uh—”

“Oh yes, yes, of course,” said Simon dismissively, nodding at her. “And writers have a tendency to exaggerate and eroticise that type of relationship as well.”

“And what exactly do you mean by that kind of relationship?” asked Agatha, tone sharp.

Nairi tensed as Simon opened his mouth and started bloviating again. Linden swallowed whatever she was going to say, giving up and quietly eating instead, leaning on one elbow.

Simon’s phone buzzed loudly, and he took a second to check it while Agatha sucked down on the straw in her water glass through her furious, pinched expression.

“Oh, I’m so sorry ladies,” he said, standing up as he punched a few buttons on his phone. “I have to run. I have thoroughlyenjoyed this discussion though, especially with you Miss Davids, we’ll have to do this again sometime—”

“Doctor,” corrected Agatha.

“Oh, that’s right, very good, attagirl!” said Simon breezily as he tugged his coat on, and a muscle in Agatha’s jaw visibly twitched.

“Oh, Si, really?” said Linden, frowning at him anxiously as he kissed her cheek. “But we were gonna go get ice cream af—”

“Really?” said Simon, with a piss-poor attempt at a surprised look. “I didn’t think so, babe, I had plans. There’s no need to end the night just because I’m leaving though! You should all have some fun, I’ll see you later, and I promise I’ll catch the next cheque!”

He was already walking away as he spoke, hand raised in farewell even as Linden opened her mouth in dismay. “Wait, Si, I can’t—and he’s out. Great.” She slumped in her seat as the door swung shut across the room and gave them a glum sort of smile. “Sorry guys, I kind of thought that would go better.”

“Really?” said Agatha under her breath, covering it with the movement of setting her glass down.

Nairi ignored it. “I mean, it’s not exactly your fault—” Agatha snorted “—do you want me to grab you a pizza you actually like?”

Linden gestured at Simon’s largely untouched pizza with an eyeroll. “No, I’ll live. Already gonna have to pay for this one.”

“I’ve got it,” said Nairi, tugging her wallet out. “May as well just pay for everything while I’m up. Do you want something a bit cheesier?”

Linden looked at her for a moment, expression unreadable, and then something in her relaxed and her mouth twitched into a wry smile. “Yeah. Thanks.”

Agatha turned her head as Nairi left the table, saying something she couldn’t quite hear. Her tone sounded dry rather than snappish, so Nairi didn’t think too hard about it. She got them another round of drinks while she was sorting out the extra pizza as well—it would probably go a ways to easing Agatha’s temper and cheering Linden up.

From the looks of things when she returned to the table though, they’d managed to have an argument in the few minutes she’d been gone.

“Better food and new drinks on the way,” she said, sliding into her seat and pretending she couldn’t see the angry twist in Linden’s lips, or the clenched tension in Agatha’s hands.

“Awesome,” said Linden, flashing her a sunny, fake smile as Agatha scoffed. “You know, I was just saying to Aggy that since this turned out to be such a bust that maybe we should try having a girl’s night instead, you know? Just us, maybe with Flo too.”

“Oh yeah,” said Nairi mildly, gently pressing the back of her hand against Agatha’s on the tabletop. “What did you have in mind?”

To All The Wizards: The Date

January trudged on with freezing wind and icy rain. Professor Flitwick led the Charms Club in special measures to strengthen the heating charms placed around the castle. Students spent most of their time huddled around fires with their friends, avoiding going outdoors when at all possible.

It was just as well. The start of the new term had brought heaps of new work that most students, besides Hermione, had not been expecting. Harry had additionally been tasked by Dumbledore with retrieving a memory from Professor Slughorn. Hermione knew the assignment must be incredibly important for Dumbledore to personally task him with it. However, instead of heeding her advice on how to carefully retrieve it, he had approached Professor Slughorn after a particularly irksome lesson that left Slughorn lauding his potion making skills, per Ron’s advice, and asked him directly. Unsurprisingly, this didn’t work, and Professor Slughorn had shut him out since.

That Potions class in particular was also why she wasn’t speaking to Harry. They had been instructed to devise and brew an antidote for a poison they selected at random. This was an assignment that would require a working understanding and application of the theory, something the Prince could not do for Harry. However, despite her hard work, he had still managed to cheat his way through the lesson.

She had been certain the milky white poison she selected was Bane of Beasts. Specialis Revelio had confirmed that its ingredients included baneberry, death caps, and lacewing flies. This was her moment, she knew it.

A feeling of guilt had crept over her, as she stirred the contents of her cauldron, glancing at Dean who had been hunched over his cauldron, muscles taut in deep concentration, sweat dripping off his brow. She wished she could sit next to him so that she could help. That she could tell, Dean was over-stirring his antidote when it needed to sit and simmer. Glancing at Harry, meanwhile, proved that he was stumped, staring frustratingly at the Prince’s book.

Quickly, she’d shoved a few last ingredients into her bottle as Professor Slughorn walked around. It wasn’t complete, but it was no doubt closer than anyone else’s in the classroom. She felt smug as Professor Slughorn came around to their table. Bane of Beasts was a poison more commonly used in North America because of its use of baneberries. Unless someone had read the entirety of Advanced Potion-Making, they wouldn’t have read the last section regarding foreign poisons and their antidotes.

All of her hope soon dissipated, however, as Professor Slughorn stood over Harry, marveling at the shriveled bezoar that sat on the table in front of him. He had been so taken with Harry’s nerve that he hadn’t even looked at her antidote, and even though — like the rest of the class — she hadn’t finished, her attempt hadn’t even been marked.

She had stormed out of the classroom, livid. It took Dean’s best cautious attempts at soothing her and assuring her that everyone knew Harry was a fraud to convince her not to break down Professor Slughorn’s office door and force him to mark her antidote.

Instead, she redirected her energy into being angry with Harry. As far as she was concerned, if he’d rather rely on the Prince than put an honest effort into anything then maybe the blasted book could help him get Slughorn’s memory and find out about Horcruxes for him.

Of course, she was still concerned. She just refused to tell him anything about it. The library had still proved unfruitful in her many attempts at locating any literature on “Horcruxes.” All the while, the news in the Daily Prophet was constantly reminding her of the urgency of the tasks at hand. Some days the weight of it was too much and she couldn’t finish reading the paper. If disappearances and burning fields were what they were printing, what were the things they were hiding?

One Tuesday in late January, Dean and Hermione were looking over the Prophet together, as they had taken to doing over breakfast.

“Any news?” Seamus asked, peeking his head over the top of the paper.

Hermione set the paper down and with a sigh said, “‘Farmhouse and nearby farmland set ablaze south of Dungannon, suspected work of Death Eaters’.”

“What in Merlin’s name are they burnin’ out there for?” Seamus asked incredulously.

Dean and Hermione exchanged looks. The Death Eaters had been getting bolder since the holiday break. They were committing blatant acts of terror, but thus far had kept it out of urban areas, not daring to assert themselves that boldly against the Ministry. People were frightened. But apparently, there were those who still weren’t frightened enough, who thought things weren’t serious until the terror was brought to their back doors.

“What in Merlin’s name are they doing any of this for, mate?” Dean said a bit harshly. He stabbed at the eggs on his plate, gripping Hermione’s hand tightly with his other hand.

Seamus, tactfully realizing when more thoughts from him weren’t welcome, bowed out of the conversation.

Even with Harry off, busy courting both Draco Malfoy and The Prince, Hermione found herself easing into her new routine. Without Harry and Ron around, she generally found herself lonely. Especially last term, she had spent a lot of her time missing Ron, but she wasn’t now.

On the one hand, this might be because she found that she was, despite herself, less angry with him. There were times his blue eyes would find hers across the classroom, and she could still faintly feel her heart race. And though his treatment of her hadn’t much improved, she felt more accepting and less angry at the situation they were in.

Meanwhile, she was spending more and more time with Dean. It was beginning to feel like they were becoming friends in their own right. There was their public persona, which was still garnering quite a bit of attention. Since she had sat in his lap, Dean had taken it as some sort of challenge. Who could outdo the other as the superior significant other? Hermione’s favorite play was to sit on the floor against his legs while he sat in an armchair in the common room as she looked over his essay or homework. Dean would sometimes play with her hair, or braid it like he would for his sisters as he looked over her shoulder at her corrections, his breath tickling the back of her neck. This seemed to irritate both Weasleys to no end, to the point that they would disappear from the common room altogether.

Generally, Dean won in the sentimentality aspect, with all of the sketches he was still providing. He had treated her to a few more of his more detailed pieces. She now had a sketch of Seamus cheering from the Gryffindor Quidditch stands, one of Luna sitting on the ground, legs crossed, Quibbler in her lap, and one of Neville bent over some succulents in the greenhouse. He drew whatever inspired him or whatever he thought she’d like to see that day.

None of this, however, was what Hermione liked best. Her favorite moments were when they were by themselves, with no Weasleys, no Seamus, and no other prying eyes around. This is when they could laugh and joke about their predicament or at the antics of the wizards around them that seemed bizarre to them as Muggle-borns.

They had passed an enjoyable afternoon in just this manner, the Friday before their first Apparition Lesson. They were situated at a table in the library near the windows — Dean sat across from Hermione, who was surrounded with books on the theory and principles of Apparition. Outside was a muddle of grey and white. More freezing rain fell from grey clouds, creating slush with the grey week-old snow banks on the grounds below.

Hermione was engrossed in Flying Feats in Artful Apparition. It was a nice change of pace from all of the other literature on the subject, full of horror stories of hideous splinches and people who had Apparated and never arrived at their destination. Dean had spent most of the day teasing her for being over-worried. Once she had threatened to take House points for being disruptive in the library, he finally agreed to leave her be and work on some new sketches with the new charmed pencil set she had bought him.

As she read, she came across the story of a man who was recorded to have successfully Apparated the furthest distance in history (1,707 km). Particularly intrigued by this, she pulled out the quill she had tucked behind her ear and began scribbling on her parchment, making notes for later research.

Dean chuckled. Hermione looked up to see him smiling slightly, watching her. When her gaze met his, he didn’t look away. He leaned forward, hands clasped in front of him, propped on his elbows. His shirt sleeves were rolled up again, no smudges of ink on his forearms this time.

A smirk played on his lips before he finally said, “You’re cute.”

Hermione’s stomach did a somersault as if she were riding the back of a Thestral that had dropped into a sudden dive. She furrowed her brow, confused. Turning in her seat to look around, she found the library was mostly empty. There were no Weasleys around, or anyone else for that matter, only Madam Pince with a large stack of books in her boney arms, three more stacks floating behind her. She turned back to him. Was he joking?

“W-what?”

He leaned back in his chair, seemingly satisfied with her reaction. “You heard me, Granger.” He opened his sketchbook back to the page he had been working on, unbothered, as if he always complimented her in this way.

Her nose wrinkled, as she realized what was going on. A blush was threatening to bloom on her cheeks, and she felt uncomfortable. “Don’t flirt.”

“Oh, is that in the contract as well, then?” he said, not looking up from his sketch. There was laughter in his voice. He was laughing at her. Of course he was. They were friends and he was clearly teasing her.

Indignantly, she pressed on. “This isn’t some teen drama TV show. We don’t flirt.”

He pretended to be focused on his sketching.

“Besides,” she said with a sigh, “I’m not Ginny. Conserve your energy.”

She had meant it as a joke, but he looked up from his sketch then, his warm eyes searching hers. The distinct feeling of having said something she shouldn’t have came over her. Things were going well with their plan, she thought. Perhaps he and Ginny had had an argument. Should she not have brought her up?

After a moment he seemed to come out of whatever thoughts he was having and instead said, “Have you thought about what you might want to do next week for the Hogsmeade trip? Madam Pudifoot’s is a treat this time of year.” Another joke.

The school had been buzzing about the upcoming Hogsmeade trip for weeks. It was a Hogsmeade trip on Valentine’s Day weekend. Hermione had never cared for the day. Shops were overcrowded, sweets and pastries were overpriced. She had fully intended to spend the day curled up in the good chair by the fireplace, reading up on any material their Apparition Instructor recommended.

“I don’t think I want to go,” she said, no longer looking at him, trying to ignore her irritation from the previous conversation.

They could hear Madam Pince shuffling amongst the stacks a few rows over. Dean leaned in close and said in an insistent whisper, “It’s in the contract that we would go to Hogsmeade together.”

“Yes, but it’s going to be madness if we try to go next weekend. Everyone is planning on going that day!” Hermione said desperately. She couldn’t think of anything she’d least like doing on Valentine’s Day weekend than going to that tea shop.

“You’re my girlfriend. What will it look like if I don’t do anything for you on Valentine’s Day?” Before she could open her mouth to respond that she, in fact, wasn’t his girlfriend, he added in exasperation, “I know you aren’t my actual girlfriend. Look, don’t let Ginny’s attitude fool you. She may look like she doesn’t care about that stuff, but if she knows I’ve taken you out for the day it will drive her crazy.”

The eye roll came of its own accord. She sympathized with his plight, she did. But she felt unwilling to give up a perfect and quiet day of studying to the grimy hands of the Valentine’s Day crowd. “I’m not trying to drive her crazy. I just want to help you, help make her aware of her own feelings, if they’re there.”

“Trust me, if they are there, you going with me will absolutely stir them up a bit. Besides, don’t you want Ron to see you having a perfectly good and unbothered Valentine’s Day weekend?”

Of course, when he put it like that, she couldn’t say no. It would look bad if they didn’t go. She didn’t want Ron to even think she was moping around, because of him or any boy. Besides, if they didn’t honor the contract, what was the point of any of this?

So a week later, she found herself walking hand in hand with Dean, down to Hogsmeade the Saturday after Valentine’s Day.

The actual day-of had already proven to be a trial for all who had to bear witness to the antics of Lavender and Won-Won. She had made Ron a huge and rather loud singing card that stood as tall as she did. When opened, little cherubs flew out and threw glitter and confetti at the recipient. This of course was fine, because Lavender had bought them matching pink jumpers with hearts on them, in which she insisted he change into, once he was covered in glitter from the attack. She then spent the rest of the day following and cooing after Ron, who bore it fairly well, looking more like he was serving a detention with Filch.

The morning of the Hogsmeade trip, however, they had left Ron and Lavender arguing in the common room. Giving into her more selfish thoughts, Hermione enjoyed having the consolation of knowing they may not join the festivities at all, while she would be seen out having a great time with her boyfriend, Dean.

A cold breeze whipped past them as they walked onto the Hogwarts grounds. Shivering, Hermione moved closer to Dean. Although the weather was still cold, there was no longer any snow on the ground. Taking advantage of any respite from the winter weather, most students had shed their winter cloaks for their lighter every day cloaks, paired with festive pink and red scarves and hats. Hermione wished she hadn’t been so hasty, and had opted for her coat rather than her lighter pink jacket.

Casually, Dean pulled her closer, throwing his arm around her as they walked. They stumbled a bit and he laughed.

“Couldn't conjure a couple of blue flames in a jar could you?”

“Ah, but if we carried those around how could we hold hands and signal to everyone that we are, in fact, dating?” Hermione said knowingly.

He squeezed her tighter, chuckling. “Too right you are. In favor of the mission, I suppose we'll have to make do.”

Looking at Dean, in his leather bomber jacket, eyes alight with excitement, it occurred to Hermione that maybe this might actually be fun. She'd spent so much time dreading the crowds and simpering couples, she hadn't stopped to consider that it would essentially just be a day spent hanging out with Dean, when away from prying eyes.

Dean looked away from her and grimaced. Following his line of sight she saw Peter Davis, a 7th year Ravenclaw, and his girlfriend Sabrina Stevens, a 7th year Hufflepuff, cooing at each other. Hermione wondered if a love potion had been employed by either of them.

Clearing his throat, Dean said, “I suppose we should count ourselves lucky we found each other to be in a fake-relationship with. Anyone else might have expected that.” He indicated towards Davis and Stevens, who were now somehow tangled up with each other while still walking.

“We are lucky I suppose. That looks awful.” They laughed together as they strolled through the grounds entrance flanked by two winged boar statues. After a moment of thought, Hermione added, “It almost could have been Ernie Macmillan for me. What a nightmare.”

“Ernie? Why Ernie?”

“He was one of the ones who received my, erm, notes. He was decidedly not happy about it.”

Dean gaped at her, dropping his arm from her shoulders. “You considered Ernie as a potential boyfriend? You know he’s gay, right?”

“You don’t know that he’s gay.” Dean gave her a doubtful look. “And yes. He has the second best marks in most classes.”

“But he’s a pompous idiot!” Hermione shrugged sheepishly at him. “I mean, I suppose that’s a hex dodged, but your choice in men Hermione, I just don’t know.”

Instead of explaining that she too had come to that conclusion in her notes, she stopped, placing her hands on her hips. “What’s wrong with my choice in men?” Sure, not all of the boys who she had taken an interest in were winners, but she was young. Mistakes happen when you’re still learning.

“Well Ernie we’ve covered. Viktor was apparently about as bright as a mountain troll. Ron, no explanation needed there.”

With each name he ticked off on his finger, she let out another cry of indignation. At the end of his list she reached to whack him on the head, which he easily dodged. “Viktor is very kind! And I wrote a ‘note’ to both Harry and you, didn’t I? My taste in men can’t be that bad.”

He rolled his eyes and began walking, leaving her to catch up with him. “Sure. You included Harry in your notes specifically to rule him out. That leaves you one out of four. Odds say you have bad — taste —” Each of these last words resulted in a poke in Hermione’s side.

“Five,” she said, correcting him.

“Five? Five what?”

She stared at the village looming ahead, refusing to look at him. “Five notes.”

“You wrote notes about five boys? Who else, then?” Dean looked agitated. He looked at her insistently, demanding to know who else might have received the honor of getting an accidental letter from herself. It was actually quite funny.

“Oliver Wood.” As soon as she said it, her smug demeanor was replaced with a searing blush. She had never told anyone that she had ever had a crush on Oliver Wood. It had been short lived, from first year until third — a school girl crush.

“Wood?!” If Ernie had surprised him, Oliver Wood had left him gobsmacked. Seeing that she didn’t intend to convey anymore than that, he pressed on. “Why Wood? What did he say? Did he owl you?”

“No, of course not,” she said waving him away. “I imagine he’s busy with traveling for matches and training. He probably missed the owl altogether.” That’s what she had assumed, what she had hoped. Her letters to Viktor often got missed when he was traveling internationally. Besides, he would likely barely remember her if he had received her letter. How odd it would seem to get a letter from a girl from your school days gushing about her old crush on you. She shook her head, No, he couldn’t have received it.

“Do you just think Quidditch players make good potential suitors or something?”

“Suitors?” She raised an eyebrow and snorted. “No, I had a small crush on him in like first year. It wasn’t cause he was handsome, although he was. He was just so driven, and kind, and watching him on a broom—”

“Earth to Hermione.” Dean snapped in front of her face. She had trailed off, stopping in the middle of the road, while she stared out in the distance, eyes full of memory and imagination. “So you do have a thing for Quidditch players. Alright, alright! No need to hit me. I, too, have dated a Quidditch player, I get it.”

He was smirking at her. How insufferable. She narrowed her eyes at him. “If you tell anyone Dean, I swear I will hex you.”

He raised his hands in surrender. “No worries, Granger. Shall we add it to the contract?” His eyes were shining down at her, as they always did when he was feeling playful.

Without a word of response, she continued walking. Couples moved around them quickly, eager to secure a table at Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop. The faint smell of sweets and freshly baked bread rose to meet them. It was so inviting, Hermione couldn’t help but smile at the thought of sitting with a plate of biscuits and a warm cup of tea, away from the cold wind.

“Shall we head to Madam Pudifoot’s first?” She blinked in surprise at his ability to read her thoughts before wrinkling her nose in her tell-tale sign of disgust. “I’m joking Granger. Where would you like to go?”

Now that they were in the village, she realized they had made no solid plans, other than agreeing that the goal was to get out of the castle and be seen having a good time.

Hermione tilted her head up. Grey clouds loomed threateningly in the sky, warning of rain to come later that evening. As a precaution, she ruled out any outdoor activities.

“Maybe we could just go to the Three Broomsticks? I imagine anywhere else is going to be too busy today,” she suggested.

“OK, sure. Maybe first we can head to Tomes and Scrolls and look around?” Dean added.

Hermione looked at him with surprise. “You want to spend the day walking around a bookshop?”

“With you? Absolutely.”

She snorted. He really was so effortlessly charming. Most of the time, she got the sense he wasn’t even aware he was doing it. She wondered if this was the side of him that Ginny had seen that made her fall for him.

Spending the day in the bookshop seemed more preferable to anything else that Hogsmeade had to offer. Plus, she had only visited the shop a few times, because most of the time Harry and Ron didn’t want to go. They thought it was boring. Dean had never been and was excited to go.

A bell tinkled overhead as they pushed the door open to the admittedly rather dingy looking storefront. Tomes and Scrolls was a much smaller and more cramped store than Flourish and Blotts and a lot less clean. Shelves lined the walkways, packed tight with dusty old books. Some shelves featured strange foreign objects in addition to the books.

“What a creepy place to bring your boyfriend,” Dean said under his breath, chuckling.

That gained him a swift elbow to the side as a distant voice was heard from the back, welcoming them.

Though the books themselves weren’t pretty — most were worn, torn, stained, or some combination of the three — the bookshelves in Tomes and Scrolls were full of unique and interesting books and other objects. They specialized in the oddities and the rare. This seemed to genuinely interest Dean as he perused the cases with her, rather than standing back, like Harry and Ron might have done.

They spent a couple of hours laughing their way through the shelves, sliding past one another through the tight rows as they reached for a book or an object. There was a collection of magical taxidermy, which held their attention for a while. It wasn’t unlike Muggle taxidermy, except for the fact that when you touched a piece it became animated momentarily, almost indistinguishable from the living creature.

Hermione gave a great shout when she reached out to touch the silver fur of a life-size Hidebehind, deadly and dangerous when alive, only for it to suddenly reach out and snarl at her. She jumped back into Dean, who quickly moved her behind him. Clutching each other, they devolved into laughter when they realized it was merely enchanted, similar to an animatronic at a Muggle theme park.

At another point, Dean handed her a long rectangular book. When Hermione opened it she squealed, pushing it back in his grasp and pushing him away. He was bent over with laughter. The book had been sitting nondescript on the shelf of art books he had been perusing. Inside however, were a bunch of sketches of creepy crawly bugs. Being that this was a magical art book, the pictures of the bugs moved around the page, as if they were actually there ready to jump at her.

Deciding it was time to bring their visit to an end, they exited the shop with tears of mirth streaming down their faces. Both of them left empty handed, wanting to leave before they disturbed the shop owner any more with their giggles and shouts.

Silence settled between them as they walked down the sidewalk, taking a moment to catch their breath. Hermione wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and looked around. The atmosphere around Hogsmeade was very strange. It was almost eerie.

Posters of wanted wizards and decrees of warning appeared in shop windows and notice boards just as in Diagon Alley. Here, more shops had been shuttered, windows boarded up, appearing to have been recently vacated. Amongst the crowds, she spotted Aurors, posted in their Ministry attire, badges pinned to their chests, on official duty.

In stark contrast to the atmosphere, students milled about, seemingly oblivious to signs of dangerous times around them, too young to have eyes for anything else this day besides love and candy. Hermione shivered.

“It’s a bit eerie, isn’t it?”

She looked up at Dean. His face was serious, his jaw set. This was a look she’d seen from time to time while they read the news together and that one time when he had driven her back to the train station.

Nodding, she looked back to the people walking around them, at the couples laughing as they walked, exchanging kisses as they went. Others didn’t notice the poster with the photograph of a dark haired man who seemed to snarl at them as they passed.

Dean laced his fingers through hers, tugging at her arm to make her face him. She jumped at the contact, not having noticed that she had stopped to stare at the poster and the snarling face of the angry man.

“You alright?”

Shaking the dark thoughts from her head, she smiled. “Yeah, let’s get out of the street.”

The Three Broomsticks, they were relieved to find, wasn’t as crowded as they had expected. Ginny passed with her friends as they entered. She gave them a curt nod, appearing to Hermione unfazed. She supposed not each of their schemes was going to result in drastic reactions in both Weasleys each time.

They found a secluded table in the not often sought after second level, which was quiet with plenty of seating, albeit a little drafty. Dean bought them both butterbeers. Hermione sipped hers, letting the sweet warmth of the beverage overtake her as she looked out over the lower level of the pub.

“You sure you’re alright?” Dean asked after a moment. He looked sincerely concerned. His eyes were almost in a squint, trying to ascertain any distress in her face.

“Yes,” she said with a sigh, taking another drink of butterbeer. “It’s just a little unsettling to see Hogsmeade this way. Even more unsettling how unbothered some wizards are about it. Things are getting worse and—“ she trailed off not knowing what else to say.

He sighed, leaning back and rubbing his face with his hands in frustration. “I know. I don’t know what I’m going to do. It seems like people with wizarding families and wizarding parents aren’t worried at all.”

“Some of them are worried.” She thought of the Order, of Lupin going undercover in werewolf dens, and of Dumbledore training Harry. Then she remembered their inability to find time to help protect her family. “They mean well, they’re just a bit nearsighted.”

After a moment of silence, both of them mulling over their own grim thoughts and drinking occasionally from their mugs, Dean finally asked, “Do you know what you’re going to do, if things turn?”

His darkened expression told her this was something that had been bothering him for some time now. Below, raucous laughter rose up, a group of villagers had begun singing “She’ll be Striking Down the Mountain,” which she recognized to be a Holyhead Harpies chant about Gwenog Jones that Ginny would often sing around the Burrow.

“Yes.” Her voice came out squeakier than she intended. She cleared her throat. “Yes, of course.”

She hoped she didn’t sound as scared as she felt. What could she do to prepare for the worst? Instinctively, she knew running away with her parents was not an option. She knew she would be with Harry until the end. That was a foregone conclusion. It was what would become of her family that worried her the most.

“You’ll be with Harry, then?” His voice was gruff, but his face was kind, unjudging.

She nodded as she tipped the remaining contents of her mug back.

“I’m thinking of sending my family into hiding. My mom still has relatives in America.” He then added more forcefully, “I just don’t know when. Or how. I keep reading the news, waiting for the sign. The news is always bad, but never any worse than it was before.”

“I think we’ll have to start making preparations soon.” Another shiver passed over her as she considered the weight of the words and what they meant for her. “The sign you’re looking for will come suddenly and there won’t be time to prepare. It will be too late when it does come.”

She reached out across the table, covering his hand with hers, trying to be of some comfort. There was a closeness between them in that moment that she had never felt even with Harry and Ron. Like her, he was a Muggle-born. He too felt the gravity of what decision lay before her because a very similar decision lay before him. All of the signs and ill tidings were direct threats to their humanity and their families.

It was his turn to drain his drink. What a pair they must seem. Two teenagers, throwing back drinks in a pub, looking morose on what was supposed to be a romantic date. She laughed suddenly.

“What?” he asked, foam covering the top of his lip.

“I was just thinking we must look like a sorry excuse for a Valentine’s date,” she said, giggling as she moved to wipe the foam from his lip.

He jumped a bit, surprised by her touch. She grinned sheepishly, dropping her hand. A moment passed before he too laughed.

“Two more butterbeers, I think, and some chips,” she then said, trying to lighten the mood.

“Here, here!” he said, raising his empty glass.

She lifted her glass to meet his before standing to place another order. As she passed she placed her hand on his head, letting her thumb briefly rub back and forth. Having a friend like Dean made her feel less alone, which was kind of nice on Valentine’s Day weekend.

“She’ll be sending back the Chasers from where they come!” There were shouts of enthusiasm as the crowd below bellowed the final lines of the chant.

She dropped her hand from his head and smiled down at him. His expression was indiscernible as he looked up at her.

“I’ll be back,” she said before descending the stairs into the festivities.

Evidence-based Nutrition Information: Dr Michael Greger

I highly recommend Dr Michael Greger’s website http://www.nutritionfacts.org for evidence-based information on nutritional topics.

Dr. Michael Greger

There is a lot of nutritional information out there on the web and in books, and much of it is very scientific sounding. But as I’ve explained previously, for it to be really scientific, there has to be evidence to back it up. That’s why recently the term “evidence-based” has started being used. The best source I’ve found for evidence-based nutritional information is Dr. Michael Greger’s website www.nutritionfacts.org. He and his team of nonprofit helpers comb thousands of articles each year in the scientific literature for information related to nutrition. In his blog and in videos on the website, Dr. Greger never makes any claims without scientific evidence to back them up. One of his favorite sayings about nutritional claims or hypotheses is “you never know, until you put it to the test”.

I first learned about Dr. Greger and his website from reading his excellent book How Not to Die which is where I first found out about the whole food plant based diet. Some may claim that Dr. Greger is biased towards whole food plant based nutrition, but that is because he believes that way of eating is simply supported the best by the evidence. He is also pretty pragmatic in his definition of “whole foods”, leaning more towards “minimally processed”. He considers frozen fruits and vegetables to be perfectly healthy, for example. I find his videos and blog posts entertaining, and explained well in layman’s terms.

The keto diet is highly popular nowadays, to the point where grocery stores put “keto friendly” labels on foods, and even tout it as a healthy eating choice. The main reason keto is popular appears to be that it can deliver rapid weight loss. It is claimed it also leads to rapid fat loss.

While proponents of the keto diet cite evidence that it appears to be healthy in the short term, Dr Greger’s videos show that there are deleterious long term consequences of being on keto, like cardiovascular issues, bone loss, muscle loss, inflammatory effects, and various consequences of nutrient deficiencies. He also shows that keto is effective for treating type II diabetes, but only if you stay on it long term. It addresses the main symptom of diabetes, chronically high blood sugar, by keeping your blood sugar low since the carb level in your diet is so low. But it actually makes the cause of type II diabetes, insulin resistance (which is equivalent to carbohydrate intolerance) worse. So if you are diabetic and on the keto diet, and ever go off it by starting to eat more carbs, your symptoms will come roaring back.

Most interesting to me was the video Keto Diet Theory Put to the Test. This examines the claim that keto will deliver more rapid body fat loss.This was categorically proven false, in what I believe is a landmark scientific study [1]. Patients in a metabolic ward study, the most accurate kind because you control there food intake and can accurately measure body fat loss, were put on a control diet for one month followed by the keto diet. The control diet was moderate carb (50% carb, 15%protein, 35% fat). The keto diet was 5% carb, 15% protein, and 80% fat. Calories on the two diets were the same, as was protein intake. When they switched from the control diet to keto, their rate of fat loss was cut approximately in half. And they lost more muscle mass. This underlies one of the most important claims about the keto diet, that it turns you into “a fat burning machine”. You may become good at burning all the fat in your diet, but you actually burn less of your body fat.

Being in ketosis does suppress hunger, which is why people can lose significant amounts of weight on the diet. But the keto diet is known to have poor long term adherence. This sets it up to be a likely candidate for yo-yo dieting: you lose weight and aren’t hungry while you’re on it, but have trouble staying on it. When you fall off it and start eating more carbs, it has actually made your carb intolerance worse, as we saw above, and you are likely to overeat and gain the weight back. It is possible to lose weight on keto, then slowly and carefully reintroduce carbs, emphasizing good carbs and minimizing bad carbs. But that is not what most people do. When you are on any kind of restricted diet there is a strong psychological tendency to make a beeline back to your old favorites you’ve been denying yourself, which for most people includes bad carbs.

Avoiding processed foods and sticking to high fiber whole foods also reduces hunger. In my opinion that is a healthier and more sustainable approach to weight loss.

Stonewall (Katlaska, Biadore): Chapter 1- Landfill

Author’s Note: So, as someone very involved in LGBT rights stuff in the UK, I’ve wanted to write something around this for a while, so I did. Set in 1968 onwards, this fic follows the lives of a collection of LGBT people living in New York in the lead up to the Stonewall Riots, finding love and finding themselves (I like cheesy stuff.) There will be twists… So I can’t give away all of the characters’ gender identities yet but it centres around Brian/Katya, Justin/Alaska, Danny/Adore, Roy/Bianca, Aaron/Sharon, Brian/Trixie and possibly others… Oh and Cory because why not? Not all are here from the beginning.

Brian always aimed to stay unnoticed when he was in school. Keep his head down, only speak when spoken to, hand in good enough grades to get by not not good enough to draw attention to himself. Unless he was in competitions of course, it’s hard for no one to spot you when you’re walking towards them on your hands and knees, belly to the ceiling, back in a sharp arch. But that was necessity, gymnastics was the only thing he’d decided he couldn’t just give up out of fear. It was the height of the Cold War, and being an oddly flexible, skinny Russian boy had already put him at risk of harm. All that changed on the morning of October 28th 1968, when some force from above compelled him to step out of the shadows. The day started like any other Monday, showering, pulling on a shirt, tie and blazer, glancing in at his passed out father and then heading off to school. He walked, for several reasons. The first was that he liked to keep fit, the second was that on a sunny day, the New York streets could almost pass as beautiful (if you ignored the half dead junkies seeping between the cracks) and the third was that the school bus was the exact sort of place one could find themselves getting noticed in the kind of way that Brian completely did not want to get noticed.

His first and second classes of the day had gone as smoothly as he could have hoped, the hitch coming at class number three- History of Comedy (Literature) with Mr Haylock. He always enjoyed the lesson, it was one of the few he shared with his friend, Daniel Noriega. Danny, unfortunately, was not quite as good at keeping his head down as Brian was, his feminine voice and wavy hair never ceasing to get him in trouble. It also didn’t help his case that he seemed completely and utterly devoted to his Literature lessons, though of course Brian knew that this wasn’t the case. The two boys had been friends since they were 11, when Brian’s family both moved to the city. Danny’s mother, Bonnie, ran a daycare centre, and often would end up taking the leftover children home when nobody came for them at the end of the day, until somebody managed to get in touch with their parents. Since his father fulfilled the stereotype of Russians loving Vodka, Brian spent more than a few nights sharing a room with Bonnie’s son. When they were 15, they had found themselves in the same literature class, ran by the very same Roy Haylock that Brian found himself say in front of that Monday morning, and Danny was instantly transfixed. After a few months of Danny’s blushing and not meeting their new teacher’s eyes, Brian finally managed to get the truth out of him.

“Wait a second… Noriega… Are you telling me that you’re, you know… Gay?” Danny looked away from him, clearly afraid his friend was going to reveal his secret. In 1965, it was still considered mental illness to be homosexual, and the treatments were less than pleasant. In fact to be with another man was still considered criminal, and at this point both boys were still very afraid of the law. Not to mention the way he would be treated by the people around him. There was a reason the gay community in New York was so closely knit, and that was that they had all been rejected by everybody else. What Danny didn’t know was that very soon, he would find himself a part of that community, fighting for liberation with Brian right beside him. But that’s a story for another time. To 15 year old Danny’s surprise, Brian’s face broke into a grin.

“I knew it! I knew it!! Me too!!! Oh god don’t tell my father.” The two of them sat together all of that night, hugging, crying, and talking about how good Roy Haylock’s arse looked in tailored pants. That was when they became inseparable, and when Danny became the first person to ever hear the truth about Brian’s childhood in Russia.

Back to that Monday morning in 1968, where the two teenagers sat absorbed in the lessons of one Roy Haylock, both for very different reasons. Brian tried to contain his smile, looking at the boy next to him, who gazed forlornly at the older man’s brown eyes from where they sat. Mr Haylock turned to write something on the blackboard and Brian whispered to his friend “Noriega you’re hopeless.” Danny didn’t manage to contain his laughter and their teacher span around.

“Something funny Noriega?” Brian struggled not to smile at the blush creeping up Danny’s neck.

“No Sir, nothing. I was just… Thinking about… Comedy, Sir, because this is a class on Comedy… And comedy is, y know… Funny?” He hadn’t meant it to come off as talking back, but he had an unfortunate habit of keeping his foot in his mouth, and the poor excuse landed him a detention at lunch. Brian sagged at the thought of eating alone, but then remembered that there was a school baseball game on that lunch and he decided just to loose himself in the crowd. As he turned to leave at the end of the class, Danny whispered in his ear “Alone time with the love of my life… Maybe you’ll get lucky today as well? Find someone to get you over that Aaron dude? I know, I know, you guys are friends now and it’s all fine, but you need to get out there!!”

Brian only rolled his eyes and walked away, but something told him that he might just be right. While he went to go and find himself a place amongst the benches, Danny walked up to the front of the class and leant against the front desk.

“You know, Noriega, you could at least try not to stare?” Roy let out a laugh at Danny’s blush, watching the younger boy loose his confidence, knowing he’d been caught.

“Oh relax, I don’t mind, it’s quite flattering, I was almost afraid I was growing too old for my students to be hitting on me, though I must admit it was usually the girls.” Taking a seat, he patted the place across from him. The younger man sat, looking like he was half tempted to bolt. His face gave away nothing, but inside his mind was racing. How long had Roy known? For the two years he’d been studying with him? Would he tell? Was he interested in Danny or did he think the boy was nothing more than a joke? He decided his best bet was to avoid finding the answers to these questions, and to avoid giving his teacher any more ammunition with which to tease him.

“Do we need to have this conversation, Sir?” His hands clutched at each other in his lap.

“No, we don’t, but can we at least be honest with each other? You should call me Roy. Since you’ve spent the last two years ignoring my lessons in favour of my behind, I feel calling me Sir is rather thankless, unless you’re into that, since you haven’t yet learnt anything about Literary History and as such I can’t really consider myself your teacher. So, Danny, may I call you Danny? We need to talk about what you’re going to do after next year. As far as I’m aware, you’re one of the few students who hasn’t yet presented any sort of a plan, and that worries me. I mean some have rather dubious goals, such as professional gymnastics, but at least it’s a starting point. Do you have any ideas?” The younger boy looked at him with a rather guarded expression, confused as to what his teacher’s angle was. He didn’t seem to want to expose him, ridicule or punish him, but he wasn’t necessarily flirting either. For a man in his thirties in their social climate, his approach to the subject was astoundingly frank.

“Um… Well… I sing. I’m not planning on going to college, I’m not really good enough at math to excel, and manual labour doesn’t really suit me, more because I’m not exactly accepted in the work place than not being capable of the work itself, but I sing pretty well. I think I’m just gonna try and do that in bars, Sir. Roy. Sorry. And sorry about… That… I’m not very good at being discreet I guess.” He smiled carefully, looking up at Roy through lashes that the older man noticed upon looking were thick and coated in mascara. Roy smiled for a moment, before his eyes turned sad. He held out his hands to the younger boy, an offer for him to take him. For a moment they were left empty, but slowly Danny found himself placing one of his small hands within Roy’s two. The two men’s eyes met, and Roy made sure they locked this time. His brows were furrowed with concern.

“I worry about you Danny, I don’t mind in the least that you’re a flirt and that you wear Mascara outside of the clubs, but there are a lot of men who would, you were lucky with me. You’re vulnerable, living the life that you… That we lead. We’re vulnerable. When your very existence is considered wrong, you need to learn how to tread carefully, and dare I say it, be subtle. Either that or you need to learn where you are and aren’t safe. I don’t want to see you hurt, kid. You may be annoying as hell but you have a good heart.” The boy’s eyes blew wide as he listened to his teacher’s words, unable of stopping himself from leaning forwards.

“You’re gay?” Roy smiled and rolled his eyes.

“Clearly it’s not going to be easy to get the message through to you, if that’s all you got out of my deeply moving soliloquy. For starters, keep your voice down!! I could loose my job!” Danny drew back his hands and blushed a little. It made Roy’s heart beat a little faster, realising that he’d been disappointed to see the boy’s smile drop.

“Sorry, Sir.”

“It’s okay, kid. I know you don’t mean any harm, you’re young, you haven’t seen what the world can do to people like us yet, and I’d really rather you didn’t. Now I want you to know that I’m here if you need my advice on anything, this is my house address and phone number. Please don’t just come over for a booty call, this is for emergencies only. You seem like the sort who might just get himself into trouble every now and again. Now off you go, you’d better find Mr McCook, he looked more than a little lost when he went to eat without you.” Danny stood, he knees brushing against the other man’s as he did so, and looked down at the address and phone number in his hand. Looking more serious and contemplative than he ever had before, he turned and walked away. Just before he left, he looked back and said quietly

“Thank you, Roy.”

While all of this had been happening, Brian had been having a confrontation of his own. He’d been walking over to get a seat when he saw one of the team members, Cory, and a bunch of his friends, picking on a tall, skinny boy with a skin tight shirt, blazer and bag on the floor. One of the boy’s pushed him down, and he heard Cory use the word “fag.” On some ridiculous impulse, he ran and stepped between them. The only though running through his head was ‘Brian, what the hell are you doing?’ Before he rattled off the first comeback he could think of, hoping the confidence of his voice would mask the fluttering of his breath and shaking of his hands.

“Hey Cory, how’s your dad? We didn’t have much opportunity to catch up last time I saw him due to the fact he had my dick in his mouth.” Cory turned as red as a beet, his friends loosing it at the look on his face before they were all called away by the coach. Brian turned to help the boy up, surprised to see that he looked angry.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

“Look, I’m sorry if I made you look weak or something but those guys shouldn’t be speaking to you like that, I had to say something. I’ll just leave it next time.” He turned to leave, but was stopped by a bony hand closing around his wrist.

“No, that’s not what I meant. It’s… Complicated… Can I talk to you somewhere private?” Brian’s first instinct was to draw away has arm, but looking up at the other boy he found himself hesitantly agreeing.

“Okay, fine. I’ve already screwed up my reputation of not existing for you, so why not? I’m Brian by the way, Brian McCook.” They started walking together, Brian allowing his companion to take the lead, and the older boy laughed quietly at the comment.

“Oh I know who you are, Brian, but… McCook? Seriously? What with your Russian Gymnast status I was expecting something harder to pronounce for a last name!” He was shocked. Not a single person other than Danny and one or two of their teachers had ever noticed him enough to connect his talent to his first name, nor to wonder what his last name was.

“Well… I changed my name when I was 11, my last name used to be Zamolodchikova. In case that makes you feel any better! Also how did you know who I was?” By this point they had found themselves sitting comfortably in an abandoned classroom, side by side on a rather small desk.

“Zamo- what now? What was your first name?” Brian’s smile faltered on his face.

“Oh we don’t talk about that. I’m Brian now, that’s all that matters. What about you? Am I allowed to know the name of the man who has dragged me away from a lunch with my adoring fans?”

“Justin Honard, pleasure to make your acquaintance.” Brian blanched hearing the name and almost forgot to shake the hand that had been held out to him.

“Wait, Justin as in Cory’s older brother? Man I’ve really put my foot in it haven’t I?” The other boy, Justin, let out a quiet laugh at Brian’s embarrassment and nudged him slightly until he began to smile again.

“It’s alright, you didn’t know. But yeah, complicated as I said. Cory wants a scholarship, he needs to stay on good terms with his teammates. He knows for sure I’m gay, and doesn’t care in the slightest, but if the rest of the team knew that he’d be in deep shit. So every now and again he joins in. I can see it bothers him, and he always spends ages at home trying to make it up to me, but there isn’t much else he can do.” Unconsciously, Brian’s hand snaked around Justin’s waist in a vain attempt to offer comfort.

“So… I have to ask, what the hell motivated you to step in there? None of us have ever had the slightest inclination you might be… You know… So why would you imply that you are when you’re not? And you don’t even know me!” Justin’s drawl had begun to make itself more and more known through the conversation as he started to relax, and the two found themselves smiling at each other’s odd habits.

“Well, for starters, I am. Totally. Full homo. So is my best friend Danny, but I suspect the whole city knows that.” He laughed at Justin’s surprised expression.

“But I don’t know what hit me really, I’ve never spoken at all to anyone here but Danny other than in answer to a question, so that was quite unexpected for me. I really do try not to get noticed. I don’t know, I guess it was just something about you. I never thought anyone as gangly as you could look graceful slumped in the dirt…” Their conversation went on for the rest of the hour’s lunch, and a little longer. During this time they learnt that both had briefly dated Aaron Coady and had kept him as a friend, and agreed that the three of them, plus Danny, really needed to hang out, maybe that night. Justin suggested a bar he knew, and Brian agreed, nodding excitedly.

“Why don’t we make it a date, plus two friends to make sure we don’t do anything… Regrettable?” Justin added, his cool exterior betrayed by the fact that he was very gently biting his lip, not that Brian had the slightest problem with the gesture.

“Sounds good, pick me up at 9?” With absolutely no warning, Justin leant forward and gave him the gentlest of kisses, pulling back to see a shocked and flustered Brian, cheeks turning pink. He grinned at the response and began to walk towards the door.

“Oh and Brian? As for how I know who you are, however could I forget a man with your show stopping flexibility? I try to keep track of these things.”

Yep. Danny was definitely right, this meeting was fate.
