#but then i decided to let arizona die from natural causes.
Fading to Dust
Send me ‘Fading to Dust’ for my muse’s reaction to watching yours die right in front of them.
When you actually stopped to think about it, life was a funny thing. Most children couldn’t wait to grow up and become independent, but then by the time they became a legal adult, a lot of them wanted nothing more than to be an innocent little kid again. People took so many things for granted that by the time old age sat in and they finally began to look back on their journey, it suddenly felt as if there was still so much left to be done.
Unfortunately, none of those feelings mattered for a certain PEDS surgeon. The once perky blonde was now running on borrowed time, and it didn’t take a doctor to see that it wouldn’t be much longer until her clock finally went silent. That was why she was in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family and a small handful of close friends who had practically become family over the years.
Next to Arizona’s daughter, Sofia, set another blonde haired doctor who was doing just about anything and everything that she possibly could to keep herself from crying. It wasn’t working very well, but maybe everyone else would be too focused on the woman in the bed to bother noticing. About half an hour later once the others had finished saying their final goodbyes and the room was almost completely cleared out, the second generation cardiothoracic surgeon suddenly found herself at a loss for words. She’d made it a point to remind her aunt of so many different good times they’d experienced together over the years, and now she was drawing a complete blank. How typical.
“I umn… I don’t know if you can hear me right now, but I just wanted to say thank you.” Bottom lip already trembling, she swallowed the ever growing lump in her throat before continuing with her little speech. “Thank you for always being there whenever I needed you, even if it wasn’t exactly the most convenient time. It meant more to me than you’ll ever know that I could turn to you with even the darkest of thoughts and you wouldn’t ever judge or look at me any differently. I know your job was to save tiny humans on a daily basis, but you also saved a not so tiny one, too – countless times.”
What Delia would have done without Arizona in her life, she was glad she never had to find out. Well, at least not up until that point anyway. “You helped give me so much confidence, and you made me a better person with some of your wisdom. It’s true, you really did. I think my favorite was when I was about eight years old and we were at the zoo. You let me eat junk food, and you told me that popcorn and ice cream tasted to good for it to kill me.” After a little lighthearted piece of humor to lighten the increasingly depressing atmosphere, she could have sworn she caught a glimpse of the smallest of smiles on the dying woman’s face, even with her eyes closed and body almost completely still.
“I’m sure Sofia’s already taken care of reminding you what an amazing mom you’ve been, so I guess all that’s left to say now is that I love you. I love you so much, and I’ll never forget you. We’re going to continue that legacy you’re leaving behind, and –” Now she was getting too choked up to express much more. “Say hi to my dad for me when you get there, will you? Oh, and Aunt Callie, too. I’m sure she’ll be more than thrilled to finally see you again. Don’t forget to watch out for us when you can, okay? Between the two of us, we’re going to need all the help that we can get.”
With a gentle kiss on the forehead, Delia stood up from her chair next to Arizona’s bed and moved to pull her best friend close. As if on cue, the two girls began repeating a chant of sorts that they’d first heard as tiny humans when they were startled awake by a nightmare. “Bad dreams, bad dreams, go away. Good dreams, good dreams, here to stay.”
Repeat until flatline.

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 17X4
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
This week we finally got the answer to the question that was on everyone’s minds: Who’s on the beach?!?!? And the answer was none other than George O’Malley! I was right! Ha! I love it when that happens. Yes George was on the beach and we got to see him have a lovely heart to heart with Meredith about life and death, how things were for her and the others after he died, and what life is like for her now.
I was surprised that the heart to heart meaningful conversation turned out to be between Meredith and George and not Meredith and Derek, but I feel like that is coming later. I think the meaningful conversation with Derek will happen right at the end of Meredith’s beach adventure just before she recovers and comes back to the land of the living.
I like that they addressed why Derek and George look older than they did the last time we saw them by having George say that maybe they look older to Meredith and by virtue the audience because that’s how she likes to think of and picture them. The sand isn’t real, the water isn’t real, and Meredith’s perceptions of them and their physical appearances aren’t real either.
We see Richard and Bailey join Meredith and George on the beach at the end sequence when the real life Richard and Bailey move closer to Meredith’s bedside and talk to her which establishes that the beach is neither here nor there. It’s not the afterlife, but it is. It’s not heaven or hell, but it can be. It’s all happening in Meredith’s head, but it’s not. It’s a dream, but it’s also reality.
I liked the call backs to how Meredith, Alex, Cristina, and Izzie laughed a George’s funeral at the ridiculousness of it all. We also got some introspection from Meredith when George asks if she still dances it out like she used to and she says no and that she hasn’t really since she lost Cristina. George gently reminds her that Cristina isn’t dead like him.
She’s still very much alive she just lives someplace else and that she shouldn’t give up on something she loves that makes her happy because Cristina lives in Zurich, Switzerland instead of Seattle, U.S.A. But we also get some insight here that to Meredith, Cristina moving an ocean away felt like a death and still does. She hasn’t danced it out like that since she left because she’s mourning that loss and to her not being able to see Cristina whenever she wants to is akin to not being able to see people like Derek, George, and Lexie like she used to because they’re gone.
Alex’s departure is different in that way in that once the pandemic is over and travel has opened back up and she’s done being mad at him she can go see Alex and Izzie and the kids whenever she wants. She doesn’t even have to get on a plane if she doesn’t want to. She can drive or take the train. The same holds true for Callie and Arizona. But the loss of people like Cristina, Derek, George, Mark, and Lexie is different because she can’t. Getting to Cristina means enduring at least two separate several hour flights across an ocean and she hates flying.
Seeing all of those other people is impossible because they’re not alive anymore. And she feels that loss everyday whether she’s able to verbalize it or not. I loved Meredith’s ending line about finding your people and holding them close because those are the ones that get you through the tough times. The fact that she made Richard her POA comes full circle in this episode when we see him trying to comfort her and make a decision at her bedside.
Richard is struggling about whether to enroll Meredith in the trial when he realizes she’s trying to say something. He gets closer and tells her he’s here for her only to realize she’s mumbling in her sleep and talking to George. Because Richard has seen Meredith and the others through it all he knows exactly who George is. He knows what the significance of that is and he realizes that she’s not trying to speak to him or get better. She’s talking to her friend George on the other side. She’s dying and if he doesn't do something soon she’ll join him. This realization causes him to decide to enroll Meredith in the trial.
I like that we also got an update on George’s Mom who we last saw in Season 8 talking to Callie about her marriage to Arizona and the birth of her daughter Sofia. George tells Meredith that grief is different for everyone and that his mother carries hers and that makes him sad and that sometimes he tries to shake it out of her and try to let her know that he’s still there and he’s still him even though she can’t see him anymore.
I loved how Meredith commented that he’s basically haunting her and George replied, “Well sure if you want to call it that.” The gentle teasing nature they had between them as friends was one of the things I loved most about their relationship and it was nice to see that here. I also liked their conversation about choices. Meredith asks if it’s her choice whether she stays or goes, and George says that it depends. Some people get to choose, and some don’t. He would have stayed if he could, but she appears to have a choice. On the one hand she’s worried about the kids and how losing her and becoming orphans will affect them.
On the other hand, she’s tired and has been through a lot and all the people she loves are on that beach. So, it’s a tough call for her to make. When they were sitting there on that beach and George turned to Meredith and said, “If you stay here you might break him,” and they turned to reveal Richard sitting next to her? Ugh that got me! Also watching Meredith shake convulsively from COVID while unconscious and talking to her dead friend was unnerving and a little scary especially since this is a real disease that is hurting real people. My heart breaks for anyone going through this in real life.
I also loved their exchange about the kids. Where he tells them how great they are and she says he never got to meet them and he tells her that he checks in on her and them from time to time. I also love that his comment establishes that all of the other people Meredith has lost are able to check in on her and the kids and that the other people that other characters have lost can do the same. It’s a nice image and something I think all of us in the real world like to imagine and believe when we lose a loved one. That they’re watching over us.
I loved how in Meredith’s Voice Over this episode she says that Medical schools often ask applicants for an essay describing a time they faced adversity and how they overcame it because they want to know how people will cope with the challenges they'll face as a doctor. And that some students worry they have nothing to write about because they haven't faced difficulty. She didn't have that problem. LOL!
Meredith is the main character, the lead star, and the anchor of the series and they introduced this plot in the premiere this season which mostly likely means that she won’t die or be sidelined by this permanently. And since the show is reflecting a real world disease and pandemic that means that if Meredith lives one of the other characters or someone else close to them will be dying from it most likely. Sadly, it looks like that might be Tom after this episode.
Tom’s got some funny dialogue when he tries to interrupt the staff meeting Richard is holding about COVID by tablet and with Helm when she comes by to drop off his COVID test. I liked how Jackson just walked over and knocked over the tablet to shut him up and everyone just laughed and carried on. His scenes with Helm were pretty funny too. The Zombie appearing on screen scared me though!
In the end we see that Teddy finally comes to talk to him and bring him soup after Helm tells her how bad he’s doing and how much he needs a friend as she desperately tries to save Meredith. When Tom didn’t answer the door or make a sound my first thought was that he had collapsed, but no it’s worse than that because as Teddy turns to leave the camera pans over and we see Tom cold and shaking in a blanket on the other side of the door unable to respond.
Which means his condition has worsened and he’s in pain, but he can’t communicate that to Teddy because he’s too weak to speak or he can’t make his voice loud enough to be heard over the pouring rain. Man that was some downpour! I wonder if it was fake rain that they created or if it rained that heavily the day they filmed that scene. Good to see Tom finally bought a house though! Seeing as last we saw he was living out of a hotel and then got Teddy a beautiful apartment only to find out at the last minute that she had gotten back together with Owen so he went back to living in a hotel again. Glad to see he got some digs.
I’ll be sad if they write Tom off as a character as I’ve really come to like him and he’s interesting and complex. Plus, I love seeing someone call Owen on his crap with such humour! We also got some good social commentary on how health practitioners often base treatment protocols and assessments on the standards of care and presentation developed for white patients, but that because diseases present differently in people of different races and genders that needs to be accounted for.
Especially because your race, gender, and where you grew up affects your predisposition for certain illnesses and can affect the presentation. Owen failed to catch something serious with his patient when they were initially brought in because he was using the standard developed for white patients which is different from the standard for Asian patients.
One of the new interns who is Asian brings this up to Nico who eventually says something to Owen who brings it up to Bailey who calls him on his privilege and reminds him that he needs to not only check himself, but because he is white and is the head of Trauma for the hospital it is his responsibility to update and improve protocols to make sure that every patient is getting the best care possible.
As Bailey says true equality means taking into account that we are all different. And when it comes to medicine conditions present themselves in different ways based on race and other factors. Giving everyone the exact same care based on a standard of care developed by and for white people is not equality because it means that people of colour like his patient receive a lower standard of care which can lead to unnecessary suffering and death.
True equality means providing equitable care that takes into account who a patient is physically when treating them. As Bailey says equitable care is not the same as equal care. One takes into account the reality and ensures true equal treatment while the other gives the appearance of equality while disadvantaging anyone who’s not a white straight cisgender man. While I like that they addressed that Nico was a complete jerk to everyone this episode.
He acted like the whole thing was no big deal when the intern brought it up and brushed off her comments about Anti-Asian racism from earlier in the episode that we’re totally valid. The intern was looking for some solidarity and for someone above her to back her up on some real issues. Instead Nico blew her off and talked down to her only to bring the issue up himself to Owen in the exact way he told her not to. Nico’s a good surgeon and he was right to say something, but he is a horrible human being, teacher, and boyfriend.
He continues to treat Levi horribly for no reason and as Jo says Levi deserves better. I liked Jo and Levi’s interactions this episode. They were funny and I love them! Also did anyone else think it was weird that Jo and Levi were having a conversation about how horrible Nico is as a person and how horribly he treats Levi when Nico was literally a metre or two in front of them and could hear everything they were saying? Nico’s an ass and apparently, he doesn't care that he’s an ass and that everyone thinks that of him.
I’m actually liking the whole Jo and Jackson friends with benefits situation. So far, its made for some good comic relief! I like too that we finally saw Jackson admit that he’s jumped from one relationship to another way too fast for his whole run on the show and that he needs to take some time and get some therapy and figure out what he wants. I love that Jo was immediately on the same page and laughed at the idea of them having a relationship right now. She needs a sex buddy, not a partner. He’s got work to do on himself and as she says she feels broken and is still trying to heal from the trauma she has experienced.
I also liked the scenes with Amelia and Link. I like that Amelia was able to express herself and her frustrations and that Link made the decision to support her. My best friend that I watch with made comment that she felt like under the same circumstances Owen would have just stormed back into the house whereas Link angrily moved some toys aside so that he could sit next to Amelia while she felt all her feelings and talked about them because that’s what she needed to do.
I also liked that when Amelia tried to push Link to talk later on he opened up about his process and was straight with her. Talking about all of her feelings out loud and in the open because if she bottles them up, she’ll wind up relapsing is her thing. Link’s thing is to focus on the positive and play his guitar. As Link says he’s happy to support her on her thing, but if she wants their relationship to work she has to support him on his thing. And she does.
My favourite line this episode? “What are you playing?” “It’s a song called ‘If The Virus Doesn’t End Us, Then Climate Change Probably Will.’” Too funny! And accurate! We also learn that Amelia loves to garden and is apparently quite good at it and they appear to have a herb and vegetable garden at Meredith’s house. We get some awkward dinner interaction courtesy of Maggie and Winston’s relationship this episode when he invites her to a virtual Birthday dinner for his beloved Grandmother which is then crashed by his estranged father.
His Grandmother invited him and within five seconds of being on the call he insults Winston and says that the idea that his son who is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Tufts is a genius is laughable because apparently he failed sixth grade. This man is an asshole and I can see why Winston hates him. That being said Winston exiting the call and leaving Maggie hanging there with his Grandmother, father, and some other relatives that she’s never met was not okay.
It was extremely rude. He should have told Maggie he had to go before signing off or said that they should both leave the call. Maggie is a class act for staying on that call and asking his upset Grandmother if there was cake. Side note: I did love Maggie and Winston’s conversation about what pencil nerds they both are! This is a match made in heaven so whatever issues they do have they’ll work through them because this is clearly meant to be.
My only real complaint about this episode was the absence of one Cormac Hayes. As my best friend said after we finished watching, “Did you notice who wasn’t in this episode? McWidow. Where the hell was McWidow?” I concur with this sentiment 100%. Hayes makes everything better and I’m sad when he’s not there. I get that Meredith was on the beach with George this episode and that was the focus on her storyline, but it would have been nice to see Hayes stand outside her window or sit next to her or talk to Jo about her condition.
That’s the other thing. Season 16 established that Jo and Hayes are friends and that she’s rooting for him and Meredith to be together and live happily ever after. So I’m surprised that they haven’t had a scene yet this season. We’ve seen Jo interact with Link who she’s close friends with and Levi who’s her roommate, but not Hayes. I’m hoping we’ll get that next episode. So far the majority of Hayes’ scenes have been with Meredith, followed by Jo, followed by Bailey.
If Hayes can’t interact with Meredith like he normally would because she’s unconscious I want to see him interact with Jo, Bailey, Maggie, and Richard more. The fact that we’re seeing intimate scenes with Jo and Jackson gives me hope that we’ll get to see those kinds of scenes for Meredith and Hayes. Although it’s entirely possible that those scenes were filmed last season before the pandemic hit so maybe not.
I also like that we got some important timeline information this episode. Jo mentions murder hornets (remember those?) which puts this episode at the beginning of May. She also says that her and Alex divorced the same year they got married which means that Seasons 14 and 15 span the same year. Which makes sense given the other information that we have and means that the relationship we saw in Season 15 only lasted a matter of months.
Which is good news in the sense that nobody really liked any of the ships from that season apart from Tom and Teddy and Amelia and Link and this establishes that all of those relationships were short lived and occurred over a matter of months, not a full year or more. Based on what I caught of next week’s promo it looks like Meredith’s condition is improving (!) while Tom’s condition is deteriorating, and Bailey’s Mom is in bad shape and is being admitted! COVID is no joke! Buckle up everyone!
Until next time!

College Athlete To College Millionaire Athlete
By Nibras Islam, Binghamton University Class of 2022
September 12, 2021
The commissioner of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) earns between $4-5 million, while the commissioners of the top conferences make about $2-3 million. Some college athletic directors make over $1 million annually, while Division I football program coaches can make as much as $11 million, with their assistants earning about $2.5 million annually. Division I programs also earn more revenue from regular-season games due to the viewers attracted. Some television contracts, such as March Madness, are worth as much as $1.1 billion. The NCAA players, the stars and lifeblood of the industry, earn nothing. In fact, they are prohibited from profiting off their hard work and talents.
The issue of athletes finally being allowed to profit off their name, image, and likeness comes after a long and heated battle that the NCAA had long tried to avoid. Under the clause that college athletes were to be preserved as “amateurs” and NCAA did not intend to compensate as such. Athletes would be subjected to high penalties for accepting any form of gifts or presents, and these punishments ranged anywhere from fines and indefinite suspensions, to losing eligibility altogether. The NCAA president Mark Emmert has long upheld that there should not be blurred lines between professional and collegiate sports, and that college sports would die if athletes were paid. They argue that compensation would draw away from the competitive nature, and the high ratings from consumers reflect a genuine love of collegiate sports games, not originating from financial motives. While this new era of name, image, and likeness certainly has yet to fully unfurl, it certainly comes as a welcome to many.
The case comes subsequent to another NCAA court defeat in June, NCAA vs. Alston which concerns the jurisdiction of the NCAA in restricting and limiting education-related benefits granted to student-athletes. The case was against the NCAA standing rule that capped the amount of scholarship funding schools could offer to student athletes. The former group of athletes that sued had done so on the grounds that the limitation violated antitrust laws designed to promote competition. The 9-0 decision was rendered by the Supreme court in favor of the group, with Justice Neil Gorsuch delivering the majority opinion stating:
"To the extent the NCAA means to propose a sort of judicially ordained immunity from the terms of the Sherman Act for its restraints of trade- that we should overlook its restrictions because they happen to fall at the intersection of higher education, sports, and money- we cannot agree."
Justice Brett Kavanagh also delivered a concurring opinion, stating impactful words such as “The NCAA is not above the law,” and that the decision "marks an important and overdue course correction" and poses "serious questions" about the NCAA's existing compensation rule. He further tore into the corporation by delivering what would seem to indicate that the Supreme Court would align with those arguing in favor of compensation with athletes. He states:
“But the student athletes who generate the revenues, many of whom are African American and from lower-income backgrounds, end up with little or nothing. Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate. And under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different."
The result of the decision meant that schools would now be allowed to entice student-athletes to their schools with incentives that they could not have before, such as scholarships, internships, foreign study programs, computers, and other benefits. By the time of the decision, about twelve states had already passed legislation that student athletes should be allowed to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness to enact shortly, and congress was on the verge of deliberating on the matter as well. While the issue of education related benefits was separate from the issue of compensation of the athletes, the 9-0 defeat in the Supreme Court and imminent further pending legal battles surely seemed to be a proactive measure and had some part in the NCAA deciding to allow for athletes to be compensated.
Nonetheless, the reversal rendered on behalf of the NCAA board of governors is relatively new, and cause for conflicting discourse over what is deemed permitted in this uncharted territory of college sports. There are existing laws in different states, but they generally seem to vary, such as the “Fair Pay to Play” Act in California, or the Student-Athlete Equity act in North Carolina. The general guidelines seem to dissuade getting sponsored by bar-like settings that promote gambling, tobacco, alcohol, adult entertainment, or anything that would be deemed questionable by a school’s morals and desire for association. University of Louisville banned its athletes from signing with Barstool Sports, which reportedly already has 150, 000 athletes signed. Other guidelines include not being directly compensated for athletic performance and understanding of the athlete to be fully aware of what is expected in return for compensation, which could be grounds for trouble. Some school officials even fear for the athlete’s personal safety, such as Professor and CEO of the Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University-Tempe, Kenneth L. Shropshire, who states that students should investigate their university athletics department resources, seeking active conversations with their university compliance officer, state guidelines, and even attorneys, accountants, and personal advisers. At Nebraska, the school has taken steps as far as launching an educational support program to combat the pitfalls of navigating the athlete marketplace. Due to the predatory nature of agencies and companies trying to exploit many athletes in the professional world, many are fearful that susceptible and unwary college students may also fall victim.
The name, image, and likeness era already has had profound effects, and not just for athlete’s personal banking accounts. For eons, the NCAA has held a monopoly in college sports, and even the universities had the leverage of advertising and marketing, attracting future talent in perpetuity. With these reversals, the power balance shifts and athletes can utilize their hard work that has led them to that point, as well as gain something monetarily to show for their grueling student-athlete schedules. They would be able to monetize their social media posts, engage in sponsorship ads, and profit from merchandise, memorabilia, and autographs. Even lesser talented athletes may be able to leverage their social media presence to attract further recognition from big brands that recognize the value and importance of personal branding. By utilizing their social media platforms to attract engagement, they possess marketability and net worth value, always a crucial factor when trying to make one’s institution more lucrative. UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi, who went viral for one of her floor routines, could have had a small fortune. Athletes such as Zion Williamson, with his viral high school and college basketball mixtapes, could have developed their brand much earlier than they had already set out to do in their assured claim to fame. One’s personal brand and likeness is arguably the most priceless item one possesses. That is the utmost essence of our personal intellectual property; the fiber of who we individually are as a human-being.
It is crucial that we help protect athletes, given how much they sacrifice their bodies for entertainment and monetary value as with any other nationally broadcasted sports, let alone home to two of the top money-making series in college football and basketball. Given how many athletes pursue athletics to combat socioeconomic difficulties, it is absurd to think that a multi-billion-dollar industry, $8.8 billion in television deals generating in over $1.1 billion in revenue to be exact, somehow has the audacity to ensure regulations that its athletes are prohibited from something as simple as obtaining a new laptop to engage in their educational curriculum, resources which they may have not had previously. Over 19 states have enacted or are in the process of passing in the coming years, laws regarding NIL. Furthermore, there is a pending lawsuit of NCAA vs. House, in which U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken denied the NCAA and its Power 5 Conferences motion to dismiss the suit regarding four players who had been denied pay for appearing in television broadcasts. These may be the first in a string of many defeats for the National Collegiate Athletic Association and exposing the corporations’ violations of antitrust principles and regulations.
This new era also stems into further issues, such as the gender wage imbalance in sports or international student-athlete eligibility, or whether high school NIL eligibility will become a subsequent prominent issue, such as in the case of Texas high school senior Quinn Ewers forgoing his senior year of high school due to Texas’s high school NIL ban. Not to mention, the ever-changing progression of intellectual property technology and regulation that comes with it, such as whether athletes will be able to utilize their school’s intellectual property unequivocally in their financial ventures, or regarding cryptocurrency and whether athletes will be able to profit off non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Nonetheless, the era of name image and likeness is revolutionary in a plethora of remarkable ways, and unprecedented in the existence of collegiate sports.

Your own personal policy, such as condo, liability, and homeowners are the same ones that your renter insurance policy will cover, but sometimes your renter insurance will have separate coverage that protects the pet. For example, let’s say you have a dog and damage the kitchen. This could lead to lawsuit. If you don’t have dog liability insurance or don’t have your pet’s insurance, you’re in a tough spot unless you have special insurance.

An employee benefit of a policy, including life or injury coverage, is its guarantee to avoid deductibles. When you buy a policy with this rider, your insurer will pay the full dollar amount from your deductible against your health plan’s dollar limit. Some insurers may also cover up to 100% of your health plan’s costs – that’s 20% or 50%. And some will pay less than 100%, depending on your insurer. In other words, you pay lower premiums on your health plan for the same amount of coverage you’d pay without the rider.
This option ensures you and your child will receive full benefit amounts when you have two lives.
It also promises one person, usually you or your child, with full coverage. One policy could double the number of years in which it.

The radio played quietly. Owen listened intently. The enormity of the situation slowly becoming apparent.
The unofficial narrative was that martial law was to be initiated. Controlled explosions were being carried out in regions majorly infected. That if it was possible to get away from cities, you should. That people should prepare for a long period of unrest, because the infrastructure of society had broken down. Lawlessness was becoming necessary to life. Permanent power outages were to be expected as major area were demolished.
The disease itself was believed to have been an altered Rabies virus. It was unknown if nature or nurture had caused its mutation. The alterations had ensured its resistance to any medical intervention.
The infection was now less acutely fast acting and more persistent, meaning those who contracted it did not die immediately. The metabolism, instead of being destroyed by infection, was maintained, so the virus would keep on reproducing.
The persistence of the infection meant the psychosis was amplified, the aggression. The incubation time of the disease had been shortened, to next to no time, so once transmitted, symptoms became apparent almost immediately, initially; fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, and then confusion, anxiety, muscle convulsions, foaming of the mouth, and hallucinations.
An element of the infection that was new to scientific knowledge was the innate desire to spread the infection. They were calling it The Zombie Virus.
Owen swallowed hard, looking out of the window, the road disappearing behind them. Megan slept beside the window. He watched her, breathing shallow. He still couldn’t believe she was with him, that she was alive.
Amelia tilted sideways as the van jolted. Owen leant towards her slightly, not really able to reach her. She was asleep, finally, he’d watched her fight it for some time. He was relieved to see her drift off.
“Richard…” Owen spoke quietly, knowing Richard was not sleeping, as he appeared to be, but simply resting his eyes. He opened them at the sound of his name. Owen rest his hand against Amelia’s knee, hoping to keep her from tipping any further with Ellis against her front.
“Could we swap seats? So that I can keep Amelia steady with Ellis?” he said, only briefly looking from Amelia to Richard. They went over another bump and Amelia shifted some more. Richard gave an imperceivable nod and popped his seat belt. He stood and moved to the side that Amelia leaned, supporting her as Owen lunged to sit on her other side.
Owen wrapped his arm gently around her shoulders and rocked her towards him, she stirred but let him mold her against his side. In her sleep she found comfort in the warmth of his body, in his smell.
Owen smiled at her sigh of contentment, almost forgetting their sad circumstances. It had been so long since he’d been so close to her.
They were getting better, chipping away the wall that stood between them.
The van stopped slowly and the engine turned off. Silence padded to room, filling their ears like cotton wool, the numbness of it roused Amelia. She stayed still, her body feeling like dead weight in the arms of her husband.
She nuzzled her cheek against his chest and inhaled, trying to think of nothing but the feeling of him. She felt him press a warm kiss at her hairline and she pouted, her eyes burning with tears.
Arizona and Alex ambled from the front, their feet making hollow thuds against the floor. Amelia straightened slightly, deciding to remain beneath the arch of Owen’s arm.
She looked down at Ellis. The child had her arms tucked under Amelia’s lab coat, a beam of light rest across her face, illuminating her eyelashes, that twitched as she dreamed. Her hair was in disarray, locks wrapped around her face and tucking under her chin. Owen’s hand came across and gently brushed it clear of her face, around her ear. He ran the pad of his thumb over her rosy cheek before resting his hand on the child’s back, overlapping Amelia’s fingers. Arizona rummaged through a cabinet, pulling out a blanket. She shook it out and lay it over Amelia and Ellis. Alex Stretched and groaned beside them. “We need a plan…” He sighed, hands resting on his hips.
“We tried to get to some of our homes but most of roads are blocked” Arizona spoke into the darkness.
Everyone sat in silence, trying to piece together their thoughts.
“We need to get food… and we’ll need water” Megan’s voice pulled everyone’s focus quickly. Her face was dark as she sat with her back to the window, only a halo of red hair was lit by the the street.
“That’s right…” Richard spoke softly.
“People are looting” Alex’s voice shuddered as he leant heavily against the side of the van.
“There’s some places further out of the city that we would have less trouble at” Arizona said, her profile alight as she looked to Alex.
“Where are we going to go?.. Where are we actually going?” Amelia tried to keep her voice as close to a whisper as possible, not wanting to wake Ellis. Nobody spoke at first.
“There’s… There’s a couple of Villa’s I know of out of the city… Cath…” Richard stuttered, thinking of his wife, who had flown out of the country a few days previous. He was carried back to the frantic phone call he’d had with her early that morning, ending abruptly when the line went dead.
“Catherine owns them, We would… go for weekends” He took in a breath, rolling his shoulders back. “I believe one of them has an independent water supply.” He looked between everyone's glinting eyes.
“Okay…” Alex nodded, making out the contours of everyone's faces. “Is that settled? We go there?”
“Sure” Arizona said.
“Yes” Owen spoke and Amelia nodded, looking back down at Ellis, taking in her features again; the only face illuminated. Owen found his eyes drawn there too. The image was so ethereally delicate.
The silence was disturbed by a shuffling outside. Something banged against the side of the van. “Alex are the doors locked?” Arizona whispered.
“I… I think…”
“Alex!” Owen barked under his breath. Alex span and lunged into the front. A figure moved haphazardly against the back doors, the silhouette of a man. His neck went limp and his head thumped against the glass and rest there. The was a clunk and the doors all locked. “My bad…” Alex chuckled from the front.
The handle of the door rattled as the man struggled in his grip. He let out a gurgling, guttural groan and threw his body at the door. The group recoiled, gasping.
“Can we just go…” Amelia breathed. Megan had pressed herself against the wall, eyes wide and unwavering from the figure at the door. “Ye...Yeah” Arizona stuttered, “Alex… hit the gas” she said, turning but keeping her eyes on the door. Ellis hiccuped in her sleep and Amelia soothed her, rubbing circles against her back.
Megan watched as they pulled away from the man. He fell to his knees as they went. The ground around him sparkled, its gravel lit by the lamps, he was a shadow against it. The lamps flickered, and he was absorbed by the blackness of the night, invisible for a moment.
“THIS IS IT OKAY!?” Alex yelled. Ellis, who now sat between Arizona’s legs on the gurney, whined.
“Guys” Arizona said, quieting them. She looked distractedly out the window, across a park where people were rolling in and out of a store in small groups.
Ellis swung Arizona’s keys against her thigh, her key ring glowed in three colours through Ellis’s chubby fingers. “You’re saying this is our best option?” Owen stood by the door, hands on his hips. “Yes” Alex said. Amelia stood before him and paused for a moment before sparking into action, she turned pulling boxes from the cabinets.
“First we need to change into our normal clothes…. We’ll attract too much attention in scrubs” she said, yanking gloves and masks from the boxes. “Take these off before we get back in” she handed everyone some. She reached Owen finding him temporarily stunned by her energy.
“Owen” she chided, nudging her hand against his stomach prompting him to take the items. “We’ll…” She paused sighing and looking out the window at the chaos. “We should go round the back and see if there’s a way into their storage” everyone but Owen was nodding, he was simply watching Amelia. “Get canned goods, rice, pasta… stuff that doesn’t age” She met everyone’s eyes.
“Richard, will you stay here with Ellis and Megan?” Owen said, finally finding his voice. He was immediately met by Megan’s defence; “O I don’t need babysitting.”
Owen closed his eyes before continuing “We need enough people here to protect the van” Owen said, only partly lying. She took it though, sitting back down. Richard pursed his lips, nodding slightly to Owen before sitting beside Ellis.
“Just there…” Amelia said, zipping up her jacket. Alex pulled in behind the store into a small parking lot, they drove slowly, each of them scanning out of the windows for people, for any movement. Against the wall, opposite them, a small round light flickered off more than on, the sky was pitch black.
Amelia rose up off of her chair slightly, looking down at the ground before them, she gasped, screaming “Stop. STOP” and Alex jarred the brakes. “There’s bodies” Amelia’ voice shook, eyes open wide.
The pair of them looked around the lot. It was so dark. “Flash the headlights” Amelia peered into the shadows intently. With a ‘click’ the lights came on. “Wait” she said, “The door is there” she said, pointing. Alex turned off the lights again.
“Owen” she called back and he appeared through opening. “We need to get that door open” she said. Alex flashed the lights again. Owen saw the bodies, two of them, their mangled limbs strung about, light hair sopping with blood. He pulled his eyes away, looking to the door, with its padlock. Alex turned off the lights.
Owen nodded, “We’ll need a something like a crowbar” he said, brows furrowing. He locked eyes with Amelia. ‘God she’s so beautiful’ he thought. She smiled softly up at him, “Arizona, will you look for something like a crowbar back there…” she said, turning in her chair and taking Owen’s hand to get up.
“When we get in there you and Alex stay together…” Amelia said to Arizona, who was now rummaging through the low cabinets. The clang of metal could be heard as she found medical tools, “Could be use these?” she said, holding up a large pair of pliers.
Owen looked at the tool skeptically. He pursed his lips, “Probably” he said as Arizona passed them to him.
“Try to find things Ellis will need” Richard said, patting Ellis’ back with his large hand. She had curled up against him, asleep again. Everyone nodded, Amelia pressed the back of her index finger to Ellis’ cheek, think of how it was the trauma making her so tired.
The temperature outside had dropped since they’d last been exposed to it. As they passed the bodies, Amelia caught sight of their wounds, and of the foam saliva stringing from their mouths onto the floor. Owen looked only briefly, guiding Amelia with hand on her back.
They sprinted quietly to the door. With a quick and loud clank the lock was broken and they entered, pulling it closed behind them.
Owen stopped them just inside, and stood completely still, barely breathing. The faint sound of raised voiced could be heard from the main store, but the stock room was deathly silent, comfortingly so.
“Okay” he turned on a torch, the others’ clicked on in sequence and the stock room was illuminated. “Shit…”Alex said with a grin. There were wide, plastic wrapped shipping boxes everywhere, filled with stock. The group scanned the space, then glanced at one another, with eyebrows raised, their lips pursed into tight grins.
They heaved produce into the Ambulance in pairs, filling the space as much as possible. They held each other's gazes in passing, even becoming somewhat jovial at their findings. Owen carried a crate of canned peach, atop a crate of beans. “Melia…” he said, and indicated his bounty, she grinned,
“Aww Owen you’re stealing peaches for me” she chuckled, reaching up to kiss him.
“Amelia…” Arizona called to her from down an aisle, just standing with a large crate of tampons. Amelia smiled at her, both of them chuckling “Thank god” Amelia muttered to her as she passed.
Twenty minutes later they were on their way out of town, the ambulance packed to the point where almost all of the floor was filled, feet propped up on top of the crates. Half of the space towards the driving area was filled, blocking the access to the front. “This will last…” Arizona said, with lopsided smile, running her eyes over it all. Amelia nodded.
“Maybe not that though” Amelia said, tapping the crate full of tampons with her foot. She locked eyes with Megan, who smiled.
“We’ll figure it out” Arizona said, arranging the blanket that covered Ellis so that it was up to her chin. Rattling cans overlapped the sound of the radio as they crawled across the city.
The voice of the radio host was sad and tired, he’d repeat the same information every so often, with new pieces of useless information. He’d play old anthems, nostalgically introducing them in a mellow tone. Silence follow each song, as though he fell into deep reflection each time a tune played.
Amelia suddenly heard Owen’s voice, boom, in the front. He screamed for the van to stop, and it did sharply, all the crates jarred. Amelia’s head started to thump with worry when she heard his door open and close and then... silence.

Basking in Firelight-Jamilton Sequel-Part Fifteen
Masterpost
Part Fifteen: We’re All Mad Here
Warnings below
—-
New recruits for the rebellion flooded into the ranks practically overnight. Apparently, Jefferson and Hamilton had quite the impact. They were rather proud of their work. But now they were no longer free to run off and do whatever they wanted, they had new recruits to train. They were split up by state and sent to their respective leader. Jefferson got the most because their stunt had been pulled in Virginia, so naturally, most of them came from there. He certainly had his work cut out for him.
There were extremely few from the western states for two reasons, one, they were so far away from the real conflict, and two, not that long ago, the nation split in two, much like the first civil war, but instead of north and south, it was east and west. The western states were their own nation now. The Eastern states liked to pretend it was still all one big nation, but it wasn’t. There was the Western States of America and the Eastern States of America. They weren’t very united anymore. So Jefferson was thankful for the few volunteers that did show up from places like Texas and Arizona or Idaho or anywhere over there.
But it was also hard to find a place to assign them, there wasn’t person leading that state. They usually just got assigned to whoever got the least amount of new recruits.
Jefferson watched as his regiment took apart their guns and put them back together again. Every single screw came out before it went back together. That was the rule. Soldiers had to know their weaponry inside and out, that way if it jammed or broke on the battlefield, the soldier could deal with it accordingly. That or just snatch up a new weapon off a fallen body.
He also had to test their skills, see who had a natural knack for what and who could barely be called a soldier. Sadly, most of them had absolutely no idea how to properly handle a gun. Jefferson had to go through all the safety procedures of when handling weaponry before they could so much as look at a target.
When they finally weren’t waving their guns around and trying to accidentally kill each other, Jefferson let them take a shot at their aim.
They all sucked.
Well, not all of them. There were a few that could actually hit the target, but there was one that grouped their shots tightly right in the fatal areas. “What’s your name?” Jefferson asked. He had gone over the list of names of new recruits last night, memorizing each new addition, but he didn’t have faces to put them to yet.
“Margarita, but everyone calls me Peggy.”
“Peggy? You wouldn’t happen to be a Schuyler, now would you?”
“Proudly, my brothers serve under General Hamilton. I feel bad for him, their all a terrible shot.”
“You know who’s a terrible shot? Aaron Burr, couldn’t hit a thing at that rally, so he just started chucking grenades.”
Peggy laughed.
“So how did a New York woman like yourself end up in my Virginians?”
“Oh, I’m not really part of your men, sir, I just saw how terrible they were doing when I was walking by and decided to show them how it’s done.”
Jefferson burst into laughter, “Thank you for that, darling, but I think you should get back to your own regiment.”
Peggy looked over his shoulder, “I don’t think there’s any need, my General is headed this way,” she said pointing.
Jefferson turned around to find Hamilton approaching, assessing Jefferson’s new recruits. “Wow, they’re just as bad as mine,” he snickered.
“Damn, I thought I had finally gotten rid of that mouth of yours,” Jefferson sighed.
“I’m not so easy to get rid of. I came over to propose a skirmish in a couple days, give the men a taste of action. With all the other Generals too, of course.”
“You hear that people!” Jefferson shouted to his soldiers, “Skirmish in a couple days so you better be able to hit something soon or you’re dead!”
“That’s one way to inspire,” Hamilton commented.
“I like to think it’s my ability as a leader paired with my southern charm.”
“I think it’s the motivation to be dismissed as soon as possible so they don’t have to look at your ugly face anymore.”
“At least they can see my face over the crowd, shorty.”
“Asshole.”
“Bastard.”
“Skirmish, two days, be ready,” Hamilton said, walking away.
***
They never got to that skirmish.
A day later, the new recruits were finally able to hit something. Kinda. Jefferson went to sleep that night thinking they had made some good progress. He woke up a couple hours later to screams and shouts.
He launched from his bed, threw on his reinforced outfit, grabbed his cane and ran out the door. He didn’t have to worry about grabbing any weaponry, his clothes were already well stocked. What greeted him outside was a scene from a nightmare.
Hamilton emerged from his tent in a very similar manner. There were people running about or lying unmoving on the ground, scattered gunfire came from all directions, and explosions went off every now and then. Chaos.
“What’s going on here?” Hamilton asked, snatching a person from the crowd.
“Governmental forces showed up in the middle of the night,” he explained before running off again.
Shit. Hamilton ran for General Washington’s tent. There were several generals already there, including Greene, but Jefferson was nowhere to be seen.
“Hamilton,” Washington called before he could go searching for Jefferson, “Glad you made it. We need everyone we can get.”
“What’s the situation, sir?” Hamilton asked.
“Enemy forces surrounded the camp in the night. Currently, we’re trapped. Our only option is to try a force our way out.”
“Sir, the casualties-” Greene started.
“If you can think of another way, I’d be delighted to hear it,” Washington interrupted.
“I think I might have a way,” Hamilton said slowly, “A small team could slip out and break the enemy lines from behind. There’d need to be a distraction on the inside so the team on the outside could act with more freedom, but it could be down.”
“How many?” Washington asked.
“Seven or so. I have specific people in mind.”
“List them.”
“Myself, Jefferson, Aaron Burr, James Madison, John Laurens, the Marquis de Lafayette, and Hercules Mulligan,” Hamilton listed off.
“Two generals involve in this?” Greene asked, “We can’t risk that.”
“It’s risk two generals or the entire army,” Hamilton retorted. “Sir, it has to be these people, I’ve worked with most of them before to steal that tank in a very similar manner.”
Washington studied him for a moment, he opened his mouth to answer right as Jefferson burst through the tent, “Sir! The regiments are forming up, they need their generals for orders,” he informed.
“Jefferson, there’s been a slight change of plans. Greene will take control of your and Hamilton’s forces. You two have a mission. Hamilton will fill you in.” Washington turned to Hamilton, “Take whatever people you need and make sure you come back. I need you alive.”
“Yes, sir.” Hamilton hurried from the tent, Jefferson following behind.
“Let me guess, we’re modifying Plan Steal a Tank and turning it into Plan Rescue the Rebel Army by Some Insane and Utterly Impossible Miracle,” Jefferson said as they walked through the chaos.
“Pretty much,” Hamilton replied. “We need to find Mulligan, Lafayette, Burr, Madison, and Laurens.”
“And Peggy,” Jefferson added.
“Peggy?”
“Margarita Schuyler, AKA Peggy.”
“Yeah, I know who she is, how do you know her?”
“She showed up and put all my new recruits to shame.”
“Yeah, she does that, okay, Peggy too.”
Jefferson and Hamilton agreed on a place to meet up and marched off to find the others. Jefferson found Peggy sharp shooting soldiers hidden in the trees with her single pistol. Lafayette was found rallying soldier to fight and shouting orders in the absence of his General. Jefferson had a harder time with Madison, but eventually, he found him balanced precariously in a tree, sniper in hand, picking off enemy soldiers.
Hamilton found Laurens first, carrying injured and dead soldiers to the makeshift hospital. Burr was standing out the top of the tank, throwing grenades left and right. The tank’s cannon fired and Mulligan shouted in triumph. Apparently, he was inside and running a tank by himself. Impressive. They made it to the rendezvous before Jefferson because he had to stop and grab his special stash of highly explosive or destructive things.
Jefferson’s group of four finally arrive, arms full of stuff. “I still don’t know where you get all this stuff,” Mulligan said, shaking his head.
“I know people,” Jefferson smirked.
Hamilton then proceeded to give a run down of the plan.
“That’s suicide,” Burr stated.
“Utterly psychotic,” Madison agreed.
“You guys are crazy,” Lafayette added.
“Deranged,” Mulligan said.
“Psychotic,” Peggy agreed.
“Your minds are derailed,” Laurens said.
“Naturally, I’m all for it,” Lafayette said.
“Yep,” Laurens chimed in.
“Of course,” Mulligan responded
“As if there’s another option,” Burr said.
“We’re all going to die anyway, why not?” Madison replied.
“Sounds like fun,” Peggy grinned.
“Great,” Hamilton grinned, “Let’s get going.

Dennis Reynolds (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia): ENTJ
Dominant Extroverted Thinking [Te]: Dennis enjoys being in charge and likes being in positions of power and authority. He’s a planner, and spends a lot of his time coming up with and implementing the gang’s various schemes. He is very blunt and other people’s emotions are of no concern to him. Dennis is a huge control freak and has no problem organizing other people to accomplish his goals (Te-Ni). He’s known to snap when other people are being illogical, such as when the gang attempts to make plans that he knows will never actually work. Dennis is the one who works hardest to keep the gang on task and gets extremely frustrated when they lose focus, particularly when they’re discussing ludicrous ideas that can never actually come to fruition.
Auxiliary Introverted Intuition [Ni]: Dennis loves speaking in metaphor, particularly if insulting or threatening another person. When he has a goal, he knows what he needs to do to achieve it. He knows exactly how he wants his plans to unfold, and expects every step to go exactly the way he envisioned it. When something causes his plans to go awry, he becomes frustrated, angry, and usually throws a fit. Since Dennis is a sociopath and a narcissist, he uses his intuition to manipulate people or to achieve his own selfish ends, particularly in his carefully crafted plans to get girls to sleep with him. Everything Dennis does is strategic, deliberate, and has been very thoroughly plotted. Everything he does is a step in an overall plan (Te-Ni). The D.E.N.N.I.S. system is one of the most blatant examples of Dennis utilizing his Te and Ni. He also thinks ahead enough to believe that a woman won’t refuse sex with him on a boat in the middle of the water “because of the implication.”
Tertiary Extroverted Sensing [Se]: Material possessions are important to Dennis. In many instances, he uses them as a way to present himself as a superior to others. Though he likes to have things well planned out before taking action, he does a good job of adapting to unexpected events in the moment. Dennis takes a lot of pride in the way he looks. He is a tremendously sexual being and enjoys doing things to make himself appear more attractive. He often feels threatened when other people attack his physical appearance. Dennis wants the best of everything and refuses to settle for less.
Inferior Introverted Feeling [Fi]: Not only does Dennis dislike feelings, he claims he doesn’t even have them. He does not like to deal with anyone’s emotions and mentally checks out when they come into play. Morality is not a very big concern for Dennis. He is rarely shown to value any of his personal relationships, and prioritizes plots to advance his own agenda above all else. Often, Dennis will refuse to accept his own flaws or shortcomings. When Dennis is motivated to help another person, it is purely because of how their mental state will impact him, not out of actual concern for the person and their wellbeing. Dennis decides to create an online dating profile for Charlie when the gang finds out the waitress is getting married because he doesn’t want to have to deal with how Charlie will react. When the gang “breaks Dee”, he helps because her depression is “bringing him down.” In rare instances, he does seem to genuinely care about his friends, though these moments are few and far between.
Note:: Obviously, the characters on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are completely unhealthy. Dennis, in particular, is a sociopath, a narcissist, and seems to have serious rage issues. This, ladies and gentleman, is an ENTJ gone very, very wrong. Though, Dennis is one of my favorite characters on television, so I’m not sure what that says about me.

Quotes:
Dennis Reynolds: Mm. I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me! A starter car? This car is a finisher car! A transporter of gods! The golden god! I am untethered, and my rage knows no bounds!
Dennis: Okay, Dee, this is truly pathetic, and you are really bringing us down, so we’re gonna help you out. We realize we may be in some ways responsible for the state you’re in.
Dennis: You know what I just realized? I don’t care about anything she’s saying. Not a bit. What I do care about is the fact that… Charlie might go postal if he finds out about this and kill all of us.
Dennis: Think about it. She’s out in the middle of nowhere with some dude she barely knows. She looks around her, what does she see? Nothing but open ocean. “Oh, there’s nowhere for me to run, what am I gonna do, say no?”
Mac: Okay…that seems really dark though.
Dennis: No, no, it’s not dark. You’re misunderstanding me, bro.
Mac: I think I am.
Dennis: Yeah, you are. ‘Cause if the girl said no, then the answer obviously is no. The thing is that she’s not gonna say no, she’d never say no…because of the implication.
Mac: Now, you said that word “implication” a couple of times. What implication?
Dennis: The implication that things might go wrong for her if she refuses to sleep with me. Now, not that things are gonna go wrong for her, but she’s thinking that they will.
Dennis: If you do not get my sister her stories and a new room as soon as possible, then I will come down on this hospital like the hammer of Thor. The thunder of my vengeance will echo through these corridors like the gust of a thousand winds.
Dennis Reynolds: You’re gonna wanna nurture that dependence that she’s feeling on you now, guys. Have her car towed, or you could slash her tires. Either way, make her depend on you for rides. Or you can use my personal go-to, which is to create a fictional angry neighbor who’s threatening her and tell her you’ll take care of ’em. Hit up a payphone so that she can’t trace the calls back to you, give her a call and say something along the lines of, “I’m watching you, you bitch. You’re gonna die tonight!”
Dee Reynolds: Oh for Christ’s sake, you’re a complete sociopath!
Dennis Reynolds: Don’t interrupt.
Dennis Reynolds: And then naturally, we bang. And this is the best bang of all because it’s very emotional for her. You see, she thinks she’s broken through my tough exterior and coerced affection from a man who was afraid to love. And then I slink out into the night, never to talk to her again.
Dennis Reynolds: Aw, merge, merge! You had your… Come on, you got, you have to seize the goddamn gap! People are so goddamn inefficient! Oh, goddammit! I don’t care if you’re old, seize the gap! You old fat bitch! You fat bitch!
Dee Reynolds: What’s going on with Mac and Charlie?
Dennis Reynolds: It’s… I can’t get them to stay focused. They keep escalating the conversation into evil curses and opening leather shops in Arizona.
Dee Reynolds: A leather shop, in Arizona?
Dennis Reynolds: Yeah.
Dee Reynolds: They’d be out of business in a weeks time.
Dennis Reynolds: That’s exactly what I said.
Dennis Reynolds:Dee, you escalating shit is exactly what I’m talking about. We immediately escalate everything to a ten. It’s ridiculous. Somebody comes in with a preposterous plan or idea. Then all of a sudden everyone’s on the gas, and nobody’s on the breaks. Nobody’s thinking, we’re just talking over each other with one idiotic idea after another. Until finally, we find ourselves in a situation where we’ve broken into somebody’s house, and the homeowner is home.
Dennis Reynolds:Dee, you gangling uncoordinated bitch. I am not getting hogtied over your lack of grace.
Dennis Reynolds:[inner monologue] I’m gonna make Mac look so bad. My form is perfect, I’m like Jerry Rice. Feel that stride, so fluid and fast. I’ve got the stride of a gazelle. A beautiful, beautiful gazelle person. My body is achieving a perfect symmetry right now. It’s that long, lean muscle I’ve worked so hard to achieve. Hm, I should’ve popped my shirt off. Goddammit, really should’ve popped that shirt off. I wonder if any women are watching from the sidelines…
[gets hit with football and is knocked unconscious]
Dennis Reynolds:She doesn’t need you here. You need to thrust her into a hostile environment so that she needs you to protect her.
Frank Reynolds: I should dump her under the bridge!
Dennis Reynolds: All right, listen, this is Family Fight. This is a nationally televised program. This is a very big deal for us, okay? We’re talking… What are you doing? Are you stealing an ashtray right now?
Mac: Yeah.
Dennis Reynolds: Why? We have ashtrays, and you don’t even smoke.
Dennis Reynolds: I want to talk about faith. It’s not about whether something is true, or-or-or based in fact or reality or the laws of physics or nature or even basic common sense. It’s about whether or not we’re dumb enough to believe in it that matters. Oh, folks, who the hell am I to say that there is no God? Who am I? Or to say that anybody’s belief in the church doesn’t make their life better? Maybe it does. Or that this man, Dr. Jinx – who am I to say that he can’t cure diseases with his sorcery? I don’t know. I say maybe he can. And I believe that maybe he can. [chuckles] Ladies and gentlemen, if we believe… if we just believe… then we can do anything!
[audience cheers]
Dennis Reynolds: Oh, yeah, ladies and gentlemen. I feel it now! Do you feel it? Do you feel the spirit? Do you feel the invisible things around you that don’t really exist? Oh, it doesn’t matter!
Dennis Reynolds:But I will say this – the church’s scam? It’s a pretty good one. It’s effective. Look at all the money these people are giving to the church. So I say we use that model to raise money for your mom at Paddy’s. Guys. Let’s throw a beef and beer.
Dennis Reynolds: Mac, these gentlemen are courting me for my business savvy. How’s it gonna reflect on me if I promote my bodyguard to VP after a two-minute conversation at a ball game?
Mac: It’s not gonna reflect on you at all because you’re not Brian LeFeve.
Dennis Reynolds: …I’m not what?
Mac: Dude, clearly you were floundering.
Dennis Reynolds: Mac, I was gathering information so that I can more fully become this man. Look, look, this is about much more than just business. This is about the thrill of wearing another man’s skin. Feeling his innermost wants and desires and being in control of his every single move. That’s how you get off. Now don’t you guys want to get off with me?
Dennis Reynolds:[getting Mac to switch seats] You’re gonna switch places with Becky, right, because while I don’t particularly find you conventionally attractive, I do find you oddly sexy.
Becky: Huh, excuse me?
Dennis Reynolds: That was a compliment.
Dennis Reynolds:Dennis Reynolds: Hey, whoa, whoa, I’m sorry. Since when did you become the brains?
Mac: Uh… I’m sorry. I’ve always been the brains.
Dennis Reynolds: What? What are you talking about? I thought I was the brains. What the hell am I?
Mac: You’re the looks.
Dennis Reynolds: Well, yeah, of course I’m the looks, but I always thought of myself as the brains and the looks.
Dennis Reynolds:All right, buddy, now explain to me how exactly we are going to calculate the totals.
Charlie Kelly: Oh, it’s easy, dude. You pour gas into the car using one of these funnels, right? And I count how much gas is going into the car.
Dennis Reynolds: All right, let me- let me just stop you right there. How exactly are you planning on counting a liquid?
Charlie Kelly: Uhh, I know how to count, dude. I’m not…
Dennis Reynolds: Okay, you do it. You do it, Mac, because I can’t speak to him. I don’t understand him.
Dennis Reynolds:[interrupting her] You know what Dee, I don’t want to hear about your dream, okay? I hate listening to people’s dreams. It’s like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I’m not in any of them, and nobody’s having sex, I just… don’t care.
Dennis Reynolds:As I tried to explain before, you cannot get honey from a hornet’s nest.
Charlie Kelly: I just don’t think there’s any science to support that, buddy.
Dennis Reynolds: There’s some very basic science out there supporting that.
Dennis Reynolds: And although I seem relaxed, I’m actually incredibly tense at all times.
Dennis Reynolds:I’m a five star man! I’m a five star man! I’m a five star man!
Dennis Reynolds:My nose was chiseled by the gods themselves, Frank. My body was sculpted to the proportions of Michelangelo’s David. You, on the other hand – well, you’re a pit of despair. Frank, you disgust me. You disgust everyone. And you will never, ever be on that billboard.
Dennis Reynolds:This is crazy. I’m having feelings again. Like some kind of 14 year-old kid. You remember feelings, right?
Mac: Yeah… I have feelings every single day of my life.
Dennis: Do you?
Mac: Are you saying you don’t have feelings?

Why Minimum Wage Should Be Increased
What[RE1] exactly the minimum wage should be in America [RE2] has been a very controversial topic lately. Many are concerned that it is no longer possible to live off minimum wage, and it therefore must be increased due to inflation. While others who oppose a raise in minimum wage are concerned that raising the minimum wage will cause employers to lay people off. No matter what is decided some good and some bad will come out of the verdict. I believe that more good will come out of raising the minimum wage, as opposed to letting it continue to sit at $7.25 an hour.
At[RE3] [RE4] one point in time the supreme court ruled minimum wage to be unconstitutional due to the fact it would, “restricting the workers right to set the price for his own labor”. It was not until the Great Depression in 1938, that the federal minimum wage was put into action by president Franklin Roosevelt. Beginning at a meager 25 cents an hour the minimum wage has increased 22 times[RE5] . An increase in the minimum wage requires a vote in congress on whether or not [RE6] the increase should be made and what the new minimum wage should be. While it sounds like a fairly easy process it is actually very complicated and can take months to complete.
Perhaps[RE7] the biggest pro to raising the minimum wage would be finally catching up to inflation. Inflation is the general increase in price of the cost of living. While inflation is constant and increases at different rates over the years, it can be a sure thing to continually drive prices up. It is for this reason that the minimum wage has been changed 22 times since it was created in 1938. However, in the last couple decades it has only been changed three[RE8] times. It is calculated that if the minimum wage were to increase along with inflation at a continuous rate the minimum wage today would be $10.10. It is difficult to understand how the minimum wage has not increased from 7[RE9] .25 an hour over the last eight years. With proven statistical analysis, analysts have been able to track what the minimum wage would equate to with today’s inflation levels. It is shocking to find that throughout the last sixty years the minimum wage with today’s inflation rates averaged about eight dollars an hour and reached as high as ten dollars an hour for a portion of that time. [RE10]
Another[RE11] reason to raise the minimum wage is the decrease turnover rate it will create. This occurs when the employs are more comfortable and satisfied with their jobs making them less likely to quit their job. The reason a lower turnover rate is good for the economy is because there are less expenses for the employers. The employers save money because they aren’t having to pay for expenses related to training and hiring new people. This also helps cover the difference in hourly pay the employer is now paying their employee. To further explain, one of the most common points the opposing side makes is the fact that the employer is paying the employee more money for the same job. Thus, other workers may get fired or cuts[RE12] in[RE13] other parts of the business will need to be made to compensate. The factor of decreased turnover rate undermines all of this and resets the costs to what they would originally be. In addition to the offset in money a lot of time is saved. The time it takes searching through candidates, reading applications, conducting interviews, and training new workers all takes up a lot of time and money. All of these [RE14] are not something business owners or managers enjoy doing and tend to avoid for good reason.
Lastly[RE15] , many states have their own minimum wage laws in addition to the national wage. At the beginning of this year nineteen states started the year with an increase in their minimum wage. Five states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine and Washington) increased their rates through ballot initiatives previously approved by voters. Seven states (Alaska, Florida, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio and South Dakota) automatically increased their rates based on the cost of living. Seven states (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and Vermont) increased their minimum wage because of legislation passed in prior sessions. I bet you didn’t know about all these states with their own wage laws. According to NCSL.com, Arizona, Colorado, and Maine will incrementally increase their minimum wages to $12 an hour by 2020. Washington's will be increased incrementally to $13.50 an hour by 2020.
If other states can successfully execute these wage laws what is stopping the rest of the nation from doing the same? If individual states are increasing their minimum wage by calculating inflation annually why isn’t the rest of the nation doing it? It’s time for congress to catch up with the states. The unresponsiveness that has come to the minimum wage is far too much. Individual states are acting and it has worked so far, but we need unity.

Comp. 1
Take a Position[RE1]
Our society has been built on the consent of the governed. A clear understanding between the public and its government that in exchange for the surrender of a portion of their freedom, they will receive protection from the government. With this contract, there is also an additional pledge that the public is to follow these laws, and if the laws are broken, accept the punishment that fits the crime. This arrangement has been forged in our nation, and has been followed for the entirety of our government. Its legitimacy has been proven time and time again, so why is it, that now the theory of punishment fitting the crime is being questioned? Why is it now that the validity of the death penalty is being brought to debate?
(Indent here) Justice, by definition, is just behavior or treatment. This definition is carried over to the “golden rule” of treating others as you would want to be treated, that we are taught as children. This belief is what our nation was built on, and when our founding fathers were creating the laws that we abide by today, they also had to compile the punishments associated with said laws. It is not so farfetched to believe that without the chance to avoid punishment, there would be no incentive to NOT break the law. Based on human nature, the threat of death is the most prominent and effective threat that can be made against our race.
Deterrence and retribution may be the two greatest accomplishments that continuing the death penalty may achieve. “Studies of the death penalty have reached various conclusions about its effectiveness in deterring crime. Indeed, other recent investigations, using a variety of samples and statistical methods, consistently demonstrate a strong link between executions and reduced murder rates... In short, capital punishment does, in fact, save lives." (Muhlhausen, David). When taking the safety of the public into account, it is hard to fathom why anyone would question a route of strengthening the security of cities where crime has been prominent.
(Indent here)To help further explain the importance of keeping the death penalty, I researched the testimonials of victims whose offenders are on now on death row, as well as the families of the victims. So many of them were filled with sadness, pain, rage and vengefulness. For this community of survivors, the death penalty offers a justice and sense of closure that fills a void in them that the offender personally dug into them. “Since that moment I feel like there's a bit of closure for me. I'm never going to have to see him again.” (Davis, Adrianne Haslet).
The sentencing of the criminals who commit the type of crimes that measure up to earning a spot-on death row may not bring back those victimized or right the wrong doings that have been done to them, but it may begin the healing stages. There is an added sense of assurance that the victims and families gain when knowing that there is no possible way for them to cause them harm again.
Throughout the history of modern executions, there has been a constant push back against the practice of the death penalty in regard to the inhumanity of the process. Those who have this opinion typically argue that it would be better to make these criminals live out their days in a small cell confined to a prison until they die. Counter arguments have been made by some of the most respected psychiatrists in their field; “You say we shouldn't murder these people, but they've murdered. We don't play God, but they play God. How do you use that argument for these people when this is what they've done?” (Schechter, David)
(This is as far as I have gotten so far)

This source was a perspective that I never have been so affected by. Listening to a woman describe her feelings towards the Boston Bomber after her and her husband were permanently disfigured because of this man was a chilling realization that no one can truly understand until you are a victim and you experience this whirlwind of emotions. It helped me to see what benefits the execution of these perpetrators can provide.

In this comparison study, researchers collected the crime rates in the states who enforce the death penalty. What they found was that in the years following a death penalty sentence being carried out, the number of that crime being committed following the execution dramatically dropped.
Schechter, David. “Do We Need the Death Penalty?” KPNX, 3 Mar. 2017, www.12news.com/news/nation-now/do-we-need-the-death-penalty/419619989.
As a psychiatrist, I think him holding this mind set is a strong indicator in the healing process that the death penalty can offer. I believe that this comparison discredits the arguments of those who wish to abolish the death penalty.

I don’t care who you are or where you live, bugging out is one of the most complex scenarios for any prepper.
The huge number of factors that you have to consider, prepare for and execute in an effective bug out make bugging out a logistical and organizational nightmare.
More, these factors tend to change as times goes by, due to social and political issues that impact the natural resources and landscape in different areas of our country.
Nevertheless, anyone who knows survival and preparedness will tell you that you need a good bug out plan in place, even if your Plan A is to bug in, sheltering in place in your home.
The first and possibly biggest problem that has to be considered is where to bug out to. You really can’t do any of the other parts of your plan, until you decide where you’re going. Nor can you build a shelter, stockpile supplies or even make an accurate list of what equipment you’ll need, without having that one detail figured out.
Finding a good bug out location isn’t easy. A lot depends on the type of disaster you’re going to have to face. Another huge factor is where you live. Your bug out location needs to be far enough away from your home, so as to not get caught in the same disaster your home is caught in, while being close enough that you actually have a chance of getting there.
This is easier in some parts of the country, than it is in others. Generally speaking, it’s going to be easier to find a bug out location and develop a bug out plan, if you live in one of the less populated states.
The closer you are to the big cities, especially in the high population areas of the country, the harder you will find it to build yourself a bug out plan, with a survival shelter that is isolated enough to protect you from any marauders sweeping the countryside, looking for food and anything else they can get.
Those marauders are the biggest reason to have a bug out plan, with an isolated survival shelter. You can survive many things by sheltering in place, but when it comes down to it, the worst thing you could possibly face is a concerted attack on your home. That is the biggest trigger for bugging out.

Requirements for a Bug Out Shelter
Regardless of what you’re bugging out from or where you’re bugging out to, there are some requirements that any bug out shelter needs. While there may be many different ways of meeting these requirements, finding the ideal location will be narrowed down by your personal situation. Where you live and how well you can get out of Dodge will be the biggest considerations.
Distance
As I’ve just mentioned, you want to be far enough away from home, that whatever disaster causes you to bug out, won’t hit your survival retreat. At the same time, you don’t want your retreat to be so far away, that you can’t get there. A retreat that’s 500 miles away from your home might be great, if you can get there. But if you can’t, all it’s going to do is give you reason to bemoan your choice.
You’ll want to be able to get there on one tank of gas. But you’ve got to consider that in any bug out situation, you’re likely to have traffic problems to contend with. So, you won’t get as far as you normally would on a tank of gas. Therefore, you should keep extra gas on hand, ready to take with you when you bug out.
Just recently Oroville, in Northern California was evacuated due to the risk of the dam’s emergency spillway failing. Since most of the people weren’t preppers, the bug out went just like everyone has said they will, with long lines of traffic creeping along the highway, gas stations out of gas, and people abandoning their cars when their tanks ran dry. You’ve got to make sure you’re not one of those people.
Defensibility
If you’re bugging out because of the aforementioned marauders, you need to take into consideration that you might have to defend your survival retreat. The more difficult the retreat is to access, with the more obstacles in any invader’s way, the better.
At the same time, you’ll need good defensive positions for your family or survival team, with good routes of escape, should that become necessary. While you probably won’t want to abandon your survival retreat unless absolutely necessary, it’s better to do that when needed, than it is to die defending it.
Concealability
An important factor in defending your retreat is keeping people from finding it. A log cabin sitting on the open prairie isn’t very well hidden; but one in the woods can be. Does the location you’re looking at give you the ability to hide your retreat, so that people aren’t likely to find it?
You need to look at this from both short and long distance. Some locations may be hard to see up close, but highly visible from the opposite mountainside. Others will be invisible from a distance, but once you get close, they are obvious. Proper planning and a good location will help you with this.
Of course, a lot has to do with how you build your shelter. If you’re going to build a big fancy log cabin on the side of a lake, with its own dock and an entire wall of glass, you’re going to have trouble hiding it. Going underground helps, as an underground shelter or bunker is harder to see. Even building an underground home, cut into the hillside, makes it hard for others to find you.
Resources
This is probably the single, most important item on the list. If you’re bugging out from home, then there’s a good chance that you’re going to need to be away for a while, maybe even permanently. No matter how much you stockpile, eventually you’ll need to live off the land. Does the location give you that possibility.
More than anything, this means having access to a good water source, fuel for the fire and game that you can hunt. But the soil matters too, as you’ll probably end up planting a garden to augment your food. Building materials may be important as well, especially if you can’t build your long-term shelter ahead of time.
Population
By definition, a survival shelter just about has to be in a low population area. That’s necessary for concealability, defensibility and resources. The more isolated the location, the better.
So a good way to start your search is to look at maps and define low population areas that are reasonably close to your home. Go and visit those areas, to see how well they meet the other needs for survival. When you find those that do, you can start looking for property that might be available.
Nuclear Risk
While the Cold War is long gone, with the thousands of nuclear-tipped missiles that the United States and Soviet Union had ready to launch, the nuclear threat has not gone away. Actually, it’s increased in recent times, with unstable nations joining the club of the nuclear capable. The risk of a nuclear strike, especially by EMP, is higher than it has been in decades, and it looks like it’s going to continue going up.
But a country doesn’t even need to own nuclear weapons in order to create a nuclear strike, all they need are good hackers. Every nuclear power plant in the world is controlled by computers, and most of those are tied into the internet in some way. Regardless of how good the security is, someone can hack it.
Our nuclear power plants have already been “tickled” by hackers, searching out their defenses. There have even been cases where one power plant or another was taken over and controlled remotely. This is extremely dangerous, as all it would take to create a nuclear disaster is for someone who hacked in to bypass the safeguards and let the reactor go wild.
Then there’s the risk of reactors being damaged by natural disasters. We’ve all head of Japan’s Fukushima reactor and how it’s spilling tons of contaminated waste into the Pacific Ocean per day. That sort of thing can happen anywhere, especially with aged reactors, which we’ve got our share of.
Affordability
Finally, you’ve got to look at what your budget will allow you to do. It won’t do you the least bit of good to buy a piece of property to use as a survival shelter, and then lose it, because you can’t make the payments. Don’t assume that whatever disaster you face that causes you to bug out will also make it possible for you to stop making payments. Some disasters might cause that, but others won’t.
Perhaps the worst thing that could happen to any prepper is to have their home or survival shelter foreclosed upon. Yet, if you do something that’s beyond your budget, that’s a very real possibility.
On to the Best Areas
The criteria I just listed actually narrow down the possible places where you or I can have a survival retreat considerably. There are large parts of the country which are just not going to work. While they might be good in one regard, they would be totally ineffective in others.
Take the Southwest, for example. There are many places in West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada which are isolated and defendable, with very little nuclear risk. But those areas don’t have much water either. Unless you can find a place in the Southwest and can put in a solar powered well, your chances of effectively creating a survival retreat are minimal.
Other parts of the country just have too much population. Much of the Northeast and the West Coast fall into this category, although there are some areas that are more isolated. Even the most populated states have places you can hide, you just need to find them.
1. The Rocky Mountains
Whenever I think of bugging out or even owning a cabin in the woods, I think of the Rocky Mountains.
The fact that I grew up at the foot of the Rockies, in Colorado, may have something to do with that.
There’s a rugged romanticism associated with the Rockies, which were the home of Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and many other mountain men, long before ranchers and miners moved in and took over.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Colorado Rockies through the years.
Today, much of the property is owned by somebody or other and what isn’t privately owned is owned by the government.
Nevertheless, there are many places where you can go and not see another person for miles around. Game is plentiful, there’s water in abundance and plenty of wood for building and a fire.
For that matter, many of the mountain communities would make good places to bug out to, especially if you owned a “cabin” or vacation home in one of them. If you could spend enough time there to become a familiar face, then when the time came to bug out, the community would accept you readily.
The nuclear threat in the mountains would be negligent, although Denver has been a big target for years. But then, if you were going to hide out in the mountains, it probably wouldn’t be near Denver anyway.
The only problem with the Rockies is price. Land in the mountains is expensive. But there’s always the possibility of using public land, bugging out to a state park or national forest. While you couldn’t build a cabin there ahead of time, you could probably cache some supplies by burying them.
2. The Appalachian Mountains
Not as isolated as the Rockies, the Appalachian Mountains are an excellent place to bug out to, especially in West Virginia, Kentucky and the western part of Tennessee.
Many of the people who live in those mountains are survivalist types anyway, who hunt, fish and keep their long guns in the back window of their pickup trucks.
There are actually areas in the Appalachians which are being developed as survival communities.
By developed, I mean that someone has broken up a large tract of land into ten acre lots and is selling it to people who want to build a survival retreat.
Since the area would be populated by like-minded people, there’s a good chance that they would band together to help each other out.
Resources shouldn’t be a problem, with these mountainous areas being just about as good as the Rockies.
Being closer to populated areas will also make it easier to buy the supplies and materials that you need for establishing your survival retreat.
For those who live in the eastern part of the United States, going into the Appalachians is the easiest way to get to an isolated area.
There aren’t too many other areas east of the Mississippi which will offer you as much privacy in a wooded mountain area.
3. The Northwest
When I’m saying the Northwest, I’m not talking about the Pacific Northwest. While Washington and Oregon are beautiful states, they’re also blue states.
That means that you’re more likely to run into government interference and restrictive gun laws. Rather, I’m referring to the states of Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and the Dakotas. These are some of the least populated parts of our country, making them ideal places to survive any social unrest.
There are very few nuclear sites in these states, although there were a fair number of nuclear silos dug into the countryside during the Cold War. Some of those are available and are being converted to survival bunkers. While you might not want to build million dollar survival condos for the wealthy, a silo or control bunker still makes a great survival retreat.
The low population of these states means that you’re unlikely to have problems with marauders or other two-legged vermin. Hunting and fishing are common, with game being plentiful. Actually, this area is one of the few places in the country where I’d say that living off the land is a very real possibility.
4. The Gulf Coast
The Gulf Coast states, especially Louisiana and Mississippi are another part of the county where the gun culture is strong, with many people who hunt and fish on a regular basis.
If nothing else, you could always hunt alligator to eat. They’re a bit hard to skin, but the meat is good, especially when cooked Cajun style.
Getting close to the Gulf Coast has other advantages in the food department as well. Much of the world feeds itself from the world’s oceans.
That’s another important source of food to consider as part of your survival plans.
Adding a boat to your gear could make it very easy for you to survive.
For that matter, why not bug out onto a boat and live in the Gulf?
While salt water is not drinkable, it can be made drinkable by distillation.
All you’d need to do is build a still or even a solar still. Distilled water is the purest water you can find.
So, you could get both your food and your water from the Gulf.
5. Parts of Texas
While Texas poses its own challenges for survival, the fierce independence of Texans make it an attractive state to bug out to. There’s lots of open country available and the state is known for not putting up with any nonsense from troublemakers.
Remember the attempted Muslim attack on the Mohammed art show in Garland, Texas, shortly after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in France? Those attackers didn’t get more than a few feet from their car, before they were cut down. Had the people in France been Texans, things would have gone differently.
The big problem with Texas is water. Unless you happen to be fortunate enough to buy property with water on it, you’d better plan on putting in a well, and it might have to be a rather deep one at that. But if you can get a well in, the land is good for survival, with a lot of game. You could live for years on the feral hogs in some parts of the state. They breed so quickly that ranchers can’t keep their numbers down.
The other problem is building material. You’re probably not going to find enough tall trees to build a log cabin. That’s why our ancestors built with adobe in the Old West times. But don’t worry, homes made of adobe can last for over 100 years, much longer than the typical log cabin.
From building a shelter to orientation, there are so many survival skills you can learn from our ancestors who wandered the American lands hundreds of years ago.
