I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't think Hua Cheng would ever forgive Mu Qing. Maybe Feng Xin, who left because Xie Lian asked him to (his crime was just loyalty of the wrong sort), but not Mu Qing, not after the mountain scene.

I like shipping the Xianle Quartet together, but I think the relationship between Hua Cheng and Mu Qing would always be tense. Hua Cheng would play nice, but only because Xie Lian asked.

That greatsword post going around is making me think about Yue Qingyuan and his only slightly cursed Xuan Su and while I really like the big thick fantasy blade of the Seven Seas illustration, if we want to picture an oversized sword (which might just fully be fanon tbh, I recall it being referred to as 'longsword' in the English edition, same as all the other cultivator weapons), then a zhanmadao would probably be more realistic. It's an anti-cavalry sword, and something that's good against horses in the hands of mortals would definitely be effective against monsters in the hands of a cultivator.

It would still put him in the cool kids club because Mu Qing canonically uses one. It can be (a little awkwardly) carried on the hip, which is mentioned as something YQY does at one point. It can be drawn in a relatively speedy manner if you just throw the scabbard away and fetch it after you are done fighting (RIP YQY). When it's sheathed it would still be the equivalent of a long and pretty heavy staff - a blunt weapon with a good reach can get a lot of work done!

Plus while I was reading around I did see a theory that some zhanmadao got really beefy and heavy because they were primarily developed during a period when all the warring armies liked to put heavy armor on their troops, so a longer + heavier weapon was better when you were trying to beat the shit out of someone, in case you couldn't get through the armor.

He would probably need a second sword though, for the times when he's actually required to cut something. Maybe even just a sad little dagger, so Xuan Su doesn't get jealous or something.

Something kinda funny about Pinterest girlies is that the vast majority of them are vaguely anti-Chinese but have stumbled across MXTX novels as the exception, so anytime they see a Weibo artist drawing of a character wearing anything vaguely ancient Chinese, they go “I think this is Wei Wuxian.”

This piece is by an artist called 陆山河 on Weibo. They’re known for drawing OC historical drawings, so this character wouldn’t be Wei Wuxian nor even from a novel at all. Here are the comments:

HUH? Since when does Wei Wuxian wear green??? Yeah he’s Asian with long hair and surrounded by Lotuses, but that’s like insanely common for traditional/historical style pieces, as lotuses are considered symbols of Chinese culture (fun fact: Tsinghua University, the university that is a homophone for Shang Qinghua, has a lotus garden called Shui Mu Qing Hua garden, which was known to have inspired the poet Zhu Ziqing).

They have like no clue that there are other famous danmei characters or authors, and they don’t realize that Chinese weibo artists have developed their own techniques into a distinctive art style you can pretty consistently recognize like Anime and Manhwa artists have, nor that Weibo is closed off from the world outside of China so it’s hard to research the artist using google.

The result is that when someone inevitably asks “character?“ or “artist?” They say “Wei Wuxian” and then some random anime artist who is totally wrong, and that I can TELL is wrong because the Weibo handle is in the corner 😭😭.

This was by @种花法则 on Weibo. If you zoom in on the right, you’ll see that that’s a match for the little white handle in the corner. Their twitter is @7DJzdye5FZ2W3A3. The character is Shen Zechuan from Qiang Jin Jiu. This was a sketch of this fully painted piece that they made, which you can find proof of from this artist spotlight from them. First off, Panonono had a more anime/jelly art style look to their drawings at the time that person posted their comment. Second, the BiliBili artist mentioned did the Weibo equivalent of a retweet of 种花法则’s work, and 嗒喵帝’s art style doesn’t otherwise match the 种花法则’s style either. Their handle is clearly different from the one in the sketch.

But that sign can’t stop them because they can’t read Chinese lol. (Neither can I, at least not very advanced characters, but I can use Google Translate. )

I’ll probably expand on why this happens and how I avoid making this mistake later, but OH these comments have been pissing me off for a while now.

长篇大章 还望海涵 qi ye anon reporting back to say i finished tgcf's main chapters and am now speeding right into my nth danmei-induced meltdown in this year of hua cheng 2021. or maybe that should be year of ruoye idk (RUOYE MY BELOVED). anyway:

a) possibly sideways-lodged into my brain by your mu qing post but i am now staring at the ceiling at 1am thinking about the (anti?)parallels between how hua cheng as san lang and lin shu as mei changsu present themselves on extreme opposite ends of the likeability scale upon reuniting with their respective Person Who Constitutes >99% Of The Reason They Came Back From The Dead For. except that hualian is helped along by xie lian consistently rolling nat 20s on perception when it comes to hua cheng, while jingyan… well. to be fair this is mostly changsu's fault actually;

b) on that note the thought of hua cheng as mei changsu is equal parts intriguing and absolutely horrifying;

c) this is 100% 扯不上关系 territory but jing beiyuan @ helian yi 7.0 is arguably an eldritch triangle third point on the aforementioned likeability scale, in that he does his level best to be a non-entity until the plot calls;

and finally to go off on another tangent entirely, d) the fact that mu qing is the only one aside from qi rong shown calling xie lian by name by the end of it (at least that i recall) is giving me Some Kind of feelings. not sure what they are but they're definitely there

Chu Wanning being demisexual is the hill I will die upon. After they begin dating, the author describes the way Mo Ran “unlocked” Chu Wanning’s otherwise nonexistent sexual desire. 

He seemed to believe sex, when exposed to it, is dirty and is overall not interested in it unless it’s related to the main character, Mo Ran (“an absolute unit”). 

I wouldn’t say he’s aromantic or aro-spec bc it was more that he was in love with Mo Ran for years (though he definitely still could be), but he’s definitely ace-spec. If he wasn’t, he’d probably be attracted to SOMEONE, but he’s explicitly not even sexually attracted to Mo Ran (who he has a crush on) until much, much later (like, after getting together later), from what I remember.

And in comparison, Mo Ran… experiences a lot of sexual and romantic attraction to different people but doesn’t seem to show/experience it as much after he falls in love with Chu Wanning. It’s clear that he had it for other people, but he’s now devoted to Chu Wanning; even if he was attracted to someone else, I doubt it would be mentioned. Chu Wanning, however, definitely has not experienced sexual attraction to anyone other than Mo Ran, and that was only AFTER they started dating. From what I read (the story’s over 300 chapters).
