Sunderland's Royal Jewel Vault (21/∞) ♛
↬ Queen Irene's Illyrian Emerald Parure Tiara
Sometimes, Queen Irene fancies herself a jewel maker. Despite the vast majority of the royal tiaras being inherited from queens long past, three tiaras were commissioned by Irene herself. The oldest being a jaw-dropping emerald tiara, the centrepiece of a magnificent parure. In 1971, Queen Irene was presented with an emerald necklace and a pair of matching earrings, a gift from the Illyrian Royal Family on the occasion of her accession as queen consort. King Edward II of Illyria was a charming ruler, and his family's jewel box was stuffed full of spectacular emerald jewels, reflecting his country's wealth and abundance. The large oval-shaped emeralds caught the Queen's eye, and she decided to expand the demi-parure over the next few years. In 1977, Irene commissioned Garrard to create a tiara to match the parure. The tiara and parure continued to be re-designed and evolved, with more Illyrian emeralds being added to the collection. By 1991, the finished tiara stood at a hefty 9 centimetres tall and was accompanied by a necklace, a pair of earrings, two matching bracelets, and a brooch. Irene since the parure's completion, Irene has worn it somewhat consistently, stating that the tiara makes her feel "as pretty as a peacock" although it often makes her the tallest lady in the room—even taller than her husband. Despite her age, Irene still manages to pull off this tiara with mastery despite having smaller and more comfortable opinions at her disposal. The Illyrian emerald tiara is truly fit for a queen.
Thank you @the-lancasters for gifting Irene such lovely emeralds 💚

You’re really supporting Di Grassi doing a dirty move? He deserves a dsq
Hi there!
I personally don’t think it was a dirty move, first of all.
If the rules really allowed it, then congrats to whoever spot that hole in the regulations at Audi. Admittedly, I have not read through the whole 120-pages-paper by the FIA on what you can and cannot do in Formula E, but as far as I know, you’re not allowed to overtake under SC on the track. But this does not explicitly apply to the pitlane.
(If two drivers come to the box with damage under SC and you’re behind, for example, then you of course don’t have to wait if the one in front of you happens to have a slower stop / takes longer repair. That’s just considered fortune of racing then. So some sort of re-arranging of positions is generally not forbidden in the pits.)
Secondly, you’re also allowed to come to your box (and normally drop massively behind by doing so) whenever you like - except for when the pitlane is closed of course. But this was not the case today, it was on green and allowed to be entered.
So in general, there were no rules broken by Audi by calling Lucas into the pits.
The only problem I saw as well was the (not-)stopping. It might have looked differently on TV, but I’ve just seen the close-up-replay-footage on FE’s Instagram and I agree that he had not fully stopped. The wheels had still been turning. Thus it was not a real pitstop, but rather choosing to drive through the pitlane for no reason (or whatever you might like to call it) - which I agree should not be allowed because you can’t just drive wherever you like during a race and especially not under SC.
But on the other hand, if Lucas had stopped and they would have, I don’t know, just wiped over his visor with a cloth or something, because he’d claimed problems with his vision - then it would have been a legitimate pit stop with a purpose, wouldn’t it?
And as you are not given lost positions back when you drop behind after a stop, I think it’s just the vice-versa-effect that you should be allowed to keep your gains if you (however) make progress then - although I’ve never even thought this to be possible math-wise, to be fair.
Just a really, really weird case today.
Nonetheless, I found the whole thing so refreshingly unexpected and unusual that it just made me laugh - and well, if one of your favourite drivers gains profit from something, especially such a hole in the regulations, I think not many of us will complain, let’s be honest.
But even apart from that, no matter who would have pulled this move off, I would have loved it just for the originality. No one got hurt or was endangered through it and it brought some spice and fun into the race.
I personally would have loved to see Audi take the win with this genius usage of holes in the regulations.
And wether he deserved the DSQ because he did not take his drive-through-penalty while the whole incident was still discussed with the stewards, or wether the standard +30sec added to his time would have been enough, is a whole other question.
...so, wow, that turned out longer than I planned, but since you asked in some kind decent tone and did not decide to insult me over anon (#props), I wanted to answer this properly and explain my point of view.
You of course may still hold a different opinion on the whole story, that is totally fine and I’m not here to try and persuade anyone.
Most likely the regulations will be altered now anyway, so there will be no incidents of this kind anymore in the future - or at least I hope that they’ll use the time until the new season to do some rule-work in general. The amount of penalties and their timing has taken a wrong turn this year imo and such heavy controversy like from Valencia or today does not do the series any good.
Cheers! ️

My Shadowlands Wish List
Tumblr media
Now that we’re getting closer and closer to pre-patch and the inevitable launch of the expansion, I thought I’d rattle off a wish list of things I hope we get to see in Shadowlands, largely from a lore/story perspective. (Or rather, my stupid foot was hurting so badly I couldn’t concentrate on writing my fic properly, so I decided to ramble off some not-so-hot takes, honestly they’re pretty mild in the grand scheme of things). I was in the first alpha wave, so I’ve had a pretty good opportunity to play the game as it is thus far, and I did want to make it clear up front that I’m fully aboard the hype train. Shadowlands is looking like a great expansion for a number of different reasons, and while I do have a few areas of concern, on the whole I am currently feeling very positive. Please also note these are just my random, late-night personal musings - your mileage may vary, and that’s a-okay.  Mild Shadowlands spoilers below the cut.
You Get A Customisation! You Get A Customisation! Everybody Gets A Customisation! This one is pretty much a no-brainer. I don’t necessarily think Blizzard need to have absolutely every possible character customisation ready to go before launch, but I’d like them to continue adding further options over time. I move in a couple of different circles in Warcraft - I’m obviously involved in the writing/lore/character aspect of the game, but I’m also GM of a raiding guild and closely follow the gameplay/competitive side of things too - and customisation is one of those few things that gets everyone excited, regardless of their reason for playing the game. I’m looking forward to seeing a much more vibrant, unique and diverse Azeroth come Shadowlands pre-patch. (Mostly irrelevant side story - when Wrathion returned in the Patch 8.3 cinematics, my Twitter and lore Discords were basically going berserk with excitement, meanwhile there’s a hundred very confused dudes in my raiding guild who don’t read quest text being all, “What the hell is a ‘Wrathion’?”. I live in two different worlds, honestly). Another reason I’m excited about customisation (and I’m probably in a very small minority on this one) is because I actually really dislike allied races, and I think it gives Blizzard an option to add more flavour to character creation in the game without always having to cobble together a new race. I honestly think they should have simply gone for sub-race customisation from the beginning, to avoid having to ass-pull allied races out of nowhere. Using customisation over allied races also makes it far simpler to give something to both factions (e.g. high elves), or to add something for one faction without necessarily having to always add something to the other faction to keep things in balance. Giving an extra hairstyle to humans but not orcs generally isn’t going to cause that much of a fuss, but if one faction were given an allied race and the other wasn’t because there wasn’t a logical racial option, there would be a shitstorm of epic proportions. So you end up in a situation where one faction* gets saddled with a really random, sucky allied race just to be ‘fair’. *The Alliance. It’s the Alliance. Leave Britney Arthas Alone Arthas has never been a personal favourite of mine, but I respect that he has a fantastic story, and that he’s a cornerstone of Warcraft lore. His story is both satisfying and complete, and that’s exactly why they should leave him the hell alone. I don’t mind if he’s visited in flashbacks (like the Bastion cinematic), or if we explore how he affected still living characters (e.g. Jaina, Sylvanas, Bolvar), but I think it would be a mistake to try to make him a central character in the expansion. In contrast, someone like Kael’thas is an excellent choice for an additional arc, because his original story was a bit all over the place and there is still plenty of room for his character development. Arthas doesn’t need it, and I don’t think the minute potential gain is worth the risk of retroactively making the rest of his story worse. On a similar note... Warcraft III Was Released Nearly 20 Years Ago, It’s Time to Move On The Warcraft RTS was a landmark series of games, and was obviously without them we wouldn’t have the World of Warcraft. However, I think the future health of Warcraft’s lore depends on the ability of the writers to grow the story outwards and upwards, not to always default back to the same handful of characters for nostalgia’s sake. While characters like Jaina, and Thrall, and Sylvanas are great, they can’t carry the narrative forever. Shadowlands represents a unique opportunity to build up the next generation of characters and to blow the cosmology of the universe wide open. From what I’ve seen on the alpha/beta, Blizzard are definitely taking a step in this direction, and I’m hoping that’s what we get instead of Patch 9.2 - Oh Look, It’s Thrall Again. On an additionally similar note... Sylvanas Is Crazy, And She Needs To Go Down (I don’t actually think she’s crazy, but one should never miss the opportunity for an Avatar reference). One of my complaints about the recent lore developments in Warcraft its that it’s starting to feel a lot less like the World of Warcraft, and more like the Sylvanas of Warcraft. She’s playing 469D chess; she’s behind everything; she’s the sole driving force of the narrative. I don’t think that works in an MMO that’s meant to tell the story of an entire expanded universe. It makes things feel small. And before I get eaten alive, I want to be clear that I don’t dislike Sylvanas as a character - in fact, I think she’s very compelling and on a night when my foot wasn’t killing me so much I’d be happy to get into an argument as to why she’s actually one of the most consistent and well-written characters in the World of Warcraft. I don’t necessarily think she needs to die, either, but I think it’s time for her narrative to come to a close to make room for other characters in the story, and I don’t think Blizzard are going to get a much better opportunity to give her a satisfying ending than in a death-themed expansion. Justice for Tyrande (Or Vengeance, Whatever Uther Wants to Call It) Tyrande got done dirty in Battle for Azeroth, probably more than any other character. I’m not a massive night elf fangirl by any means, but their entire race was basically used as grist for the mill in Sad Orc Dad’s story, with no next to no narrative follow-up besides a cool cinematic that went absolutely nowhere in game. Outside the game, her character then got subjected to the cacophonous misogynistic crowing of the fanbase that occurs whenever a female character dares to be angry in the World of Warcraft. Much like Jaina, she’s decried for being ‘crazy’ or ‘irrational’ for, you know, being pissed that her people and her homeland were wiped out in an act of wildly disproportional aggression. I don’t know about you guys, but that would tend to make me a wee bit testy, but maybe I’m crazy and irrational too. In any case, I want to see her go off in Shadowlands. Fuck ‘em up, girlfriend. You Get One Villain. If You Drop It, I’m Not Buying You Another One I think most people will agree with me that the two weakest expansions (at least from a narrative perspective) were Warlords of Draenor and Battle for Azeroth. There are a few reasons for this, but for me one of the biggest issues was that they were chop-and-change expansions. Both were advertised and started off with narratives and themes that were wildly different from where they finished up. Warlords was part Iron Horde expansion, part Legion expansion; BFA was part faction war expansion, part Old God expansion... and that’s exactly the problem. Both times, I felt like we got two half-done expansions, instead of one single, cohesive narrative experience.  If you look at expansions like Wrath of the Lich King and Legion, both of which were very well received, a lot of their success hinges on their presentation of a consistent narrative with a clear goal for players within the story. The Lich King, for example, was a consistent and very present villain. He menaced you throughout your entire journey, and so his eventual defeat on top of Icecrown Citadel was meaningful and impactful. Defeating N’Zoth, by contrast, felt pretty hollow, as we hadn’t had enough narrative build up to really care about taking him down. Part of the reason I’m excited for Shadowlands is it looks like we’re getting a nice, focused story development that builds up to a logical and satisfying villain in the Jailer. Why Can’t We Be Friends? Look, I bleed blue. I love the Alliance... but the faction war should not continue to be a driving narrative element in the World of Warcraft. I don’t want the factions to be removed, I think they’re a core part of the Warcraft experience and I’d be pretty sad to have to let them go entirely, but the cycle of hating one another then teaming up in an uneasy alliance in order to defeat a bigger bad, only to go back to being at one another’s throats the next day is... tiresome.
Ideally, the war would have ended after Legion - it was the most logical place to do so, and I think it was a big missed opportunity that they ran with Battle for Azeroth immediately afterwards. Unfortunately, I think this means the Alliance is going to just have to forgive and forget, which doesn’t really make a lot sense at this point given everything that happened in BFA, but for the sake of the overall story, it might be a necessary sacrifice. That said... I Am Once Again Asking for Alliance Narrative Agency I know there are a lot of (valid) complaints to be had about the Horde storyline, but the one thing the Horde has always had over the Alliance is that they actually get to drive the narrative forward. The Alliance are pretty much exclusively reactionary, and in a lot of ways are side characters to the main Horde storyline. I’ve made this argument elsewhere, but it honestly wouldn’t be too hard to remove Anduin’s part in Saurfang’s storyline in Battle for Azeroth and have it turn out more or less exactly the same way... which says a lot about the importance of the Alliance in the overall storyline. In short, the Alliance are secondary players at best, and downright irrelevant at worst. One of my biggest hopes for Shadowlands is that we’ll actually get to see some Alliance narrative agency. To be clear, however, this does not mean a simple rehashing of Horde conflicts with a blue coat of paint. Alliance stories are not Horde stories, and nor should they be. Having an Alliance leader turn into a genocidal despot is not the only way to create conflict or agency in the story - there are plenty of opportunities for character growth, development and conflict on the Alliance side without having to have one of our leaders do a heel turn (e.g. Tyrande as the Night Warrior, Anduin dealing with his experience in the Maw, Jaina confronting the fates of people like Kael’thas and Arthas, Taelia meeting her father, etc.), and I really hope we get to see some of those narrative threads come to fruition. I Want to Mount Everything Add a hundred new mounts. Two hundred. A pot plant with googly eyes, the four hundredth Alliance horse, your mum. I’ll ride anything; I don’t even care. (Please note this is the most important opinion I have).

Sharing some bug Pokémon studies I did for fun a while back; I plan to do more once the university year comes to an end and I have some free time to focus on stuff without having other obligations to worry over, for now though I do want to talk about what’s been done so far for fun!
For starters it’s worth noting that for all the studies thus far I mainly stuck to referencing the Gen 2 designs, mainly for the simplicity in colour and liking the chunky sprites, if I was struggling to understand certain parts I would find other references so I wasn’t completely lost. The most it really changed for Parasect is the simplified palette and the different pattern on the mushroom while Pinsir and Scyther just have chunkier proportions and sliiiightly different shapes (though that’s mainly Pinsir).
In each study I wanted to get three different poses for the sake of forcing myself to do certain angles; one portrait angle so I can force some practice for that perspective (save for Scyther) and for the sake of learning the Pokémon’s proportions; one angled view for fun; and one action pose that’s also just to have some fun, I might try to focus on these in future because it’s super interesting to think about how each Pokémon acts either through attack, emoting or doing normal activities like eating.
One last note before talking about each individual Pokémon, it’ll be a lot of gushing so if you’d like to skip them, feel free, it’s not that important.
-
As I get into talking about Parasect I want to say right off the bat I find the idea for them fascinating, especially for an earlier generation where things were understandably simple in concept. Having a bug Pokémon with the focus being put on the fungus taking over as host is excellently done, from Paras’s developing spores (which are depressingly given to them from birth) to Parasect’s lifeless eyes signalling the loss of control for the insect underneath to the massive fungus above it. It’s a sad sight to see honestly but there’s a morbid interest in thinking about how the fungus would try to manipulate the host into preforming attacks, the main idea for attacks like “poison powder” being represented through making Parasect put it’s weight on one side and making the resulting shudders to regain balance spread spores around.
For Pinsir, I struggled to match the chunkiness of the design, especially around the body which ended up looking slimmer and less of a uniformed shape which was partly due to my focus on following earlier sprites where it looks segmented at times (in hindsight it was probably just a by-product of working with small sprite sizes). Still enjoyed the process of drawing them regardless, tried to make them look more determined instead of just super angry like the action pose.
SO ANYWAY SCYTHER, one of my all time favourites both with bug Pokémon and just Pokémon in general, there’s something very slick about the design and not really knowing about mantises as a kid made the blade arms seem that much cooler (not that knowing about mantises makes them less cool somehow). I kind of ditched the portrait view in favour of just having fun drawing some cool poses while still getting some practice in for other art fundamentals like foreshortening, feels weird to pair it with the action pose being a more cute depiction but I was curious how they’d go about eating simple foods like that. I also feel it’s worth noting that this one took me the longest, mainly due to learning how to draw the scythe arms properly and the getting the wings to look correct, still was super fun to do~.
Anyway, hope you like the drawings and maybe enjoyed hearing my thoughts on them!

Thanks for your tag @teotangerine! Glad to hear from you again :)
1. How has your day been?
It's alright thus far! I had a video conference this morning with my French class, but other than that, not much else. However, it'll get a little busier later because of work, but before I go, I have some cleaning planned to do!
2. What was the last thing that made you smile?
A YouTube video! Nothing too special, just a little sweet comedy animation lolol
3. What is keeping you entertained these days?
My massive brain rots for all my ships and favourite characters, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, memes, work and talking with my grandma, music, online chatting with my friends, and drawing!
4. If you are in some kind of quarantine/self-isolation: is there anything you'd like to achieve at this time?
Yeah! I would like to get better at drawing, since I now have enough spare time to properly practice, and become better at playing guitar (I've started picking up playing it shortly after quarantine started lol), learn for school (I'm still writing exams rip), and clean a lot more/sort stuff out, and expand my interests a little more!
5. Post a selfie! OR post an image that best depicts you!! (Whatever you feel best with)
I'm looking like a mess right now, so picture it is! Hahaha

Day 16
Mon 20th Jan 2020 (thats the date 20.01.20 weird init)
Woke up at 6am to hear a mosquito buzzing around my ear and flipped the light on like a ninja. The little punk was squished within 5 mins.
Now that’s the kind of adventures I’m after. Not a LIVE volcano.
Breakfast wasn’t quite ready as we were early, so we wolfed down some bananas and weird tasting coffee that was accidentally mixed with African milky tea and we found bodas to the Grande Barrie (Rwanda/Congo border). That was after was tried to ACCIDENTALLY leave the hotel without paying for one of the nights.
The border building was modern with ok toilets (but of course I dropped the WHOLE toilet roll on the wet floor fml)) and we headed to the tourist office who helped fast track us through. We were sat there looking at each other like WHAT ARE WE DOING. Going into the Democratic Republic of CONGO, climbing an active volcano and sleeping on the crater edge and paying for the experience? THIS IS CRAZY. But I suppose that’s the fun of it?
AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT??
A safari type vehicle was waiting for us and we were driven through Goma to the start of the trek, stopping off the wash our hands at an Ebola check point. The seats were raised so it felt like we were sort of paraded through the town - the locals enjoyed the spectacle.
We pulled into the trek start point (I can confirm that the toilet there is not one I recommend really having to try and aim while you pee) and still saw no signs of other muzungus who might be joining us. We really hoped for a decent group but its such a roulette. Could be some right bores in there you never know.
A vehicle pulled up and a French brother and sister - Fleur & Simon - got out, with Fleur’s Belgium husband Toma & Argentinian Martin. Fleur worked for Unicef and Toma was a photographer and they met in Haiti but currently lived in Congo’s capital Kishasa (!). Simon was visiting her from Paris and worked in a bookshop and ran his own magazine. Martin worked in Nairobi for the Argentinian embassy.
Basically we had a great group, really interesting, good fun and chilled out at the same time. PHEW.
The trek was pretty hard but we had a lot of stops and the guides were so good, constantly reiterating that there was no rush and we could stop whenever we wanted for as long as we wanted.
Which was great for ME in particular...
See, when we sat down for lunch at our 3rd stop, I was fine but I was also STARVING. So I wolfed down my sandwich and fruit juice with more enthusiasm than a kid at a Pizza Hut buffet.
Then the section to climb straight after lunch was SO steep, such hard work, that I suddenly felt kinda sick. I had to take a few mini breaks and Phil poured water on my face rather dramatically, then I yawned a few times and in his panic mode he was like WHY ARE YOU YAWNING SO MUCH and I was like Cos I want to yawn mate. The chef Jean-Louie was so nice, reassuring us that there was no stress and we could take breaks as much as we needed. Ok sure by ‘we’ I mean ‘I’.
I managed to make it to the next proper break point ok but was craaaaving one of our juices. Then I was fiiiiine, I immediately felt better with 5 minutes rest and one of the bargain basement 10% juices they’d provided. Panic over (right Phil?).
One of the guides pointed to the top of the mountain and you could faintly see some shapes along the edge, which were apparently the huts we’d be sleeping in. Honestly they were SO FAR AWAY. I could not compute that we would be able to climb there in just a few hours. It seemed like a ridiculous idea.
But before we knew it, the cabins were in sight and we did the final 30 minutes of climbing watching them get closer and closer.
We finally reached the crater edge and apprehensively went towards it to look over...
I mean, it was absolutely BONKERS. A GIANT crater expanse lay before us, with a glowing lava lake bubbling away to the left and a whole other mini volcano on the right properly going off.
Never seen anything like it.
And hope it don’t ever again.
LOL joking (not joking) but seriously it was insane. So incredible and mesmerising.
We all sat and looked at it for a while, and then Phil remembered - he’d got himself a special little tshirt made hadn’t he.
After becoming obsessed with the idea that we needed to ‘drink an umbongo in the Congo’ he’d tried to find one in loads of supermarkets before we left. At one point he even went out at midnight to visit a 24 hour Asda ffs. With no luck, he’d managed to get a T-shirt made on the DAY that we left the UK - just in time. So wearing his UmBongo T-shirt, we did a little video to share with his triumph of been there, wore the T-shirt.
While we all sat looking at the volcano, I thought I’d I ask the security guard Jonas who was sat with us the question on everybody’s lips:
‘Jonas, can I ask, what time will dinner be?’
I’d assumed that he would know the answer but Jonas then went to ask the chef.
Phil was like ‘Oh Jess that’s so embarrassing, you should not have asked that’ but then everyone piped up like We are SO glad you asked that, we’re starving too.
So HA to Phil, they were buzzin - then Jonas said 6:30pm, which was 2 hours away.
No one was buzzin then.
But suddenly the chef pops out of his kitchen and says, word for word:
‘Jessica’...(yes he said my name only)...’would you like some coffee or tea?’
I looked around at the group, who were all wondering where their invite was, then back at the chef and said
‘Yes...yes I would. Thank you’
Clearly my tactic of pretending to feel ill earlier was REALLY paying off.
Obviously once I was in the kitchen with my milky sugary coffee, I asked if there was enough for the others and thankfully there was or I could have been swiftly isolated by my fellow trekkers, no one needs that when there’s a lava lake nearby - and then everyone had a hot drink in my warm kitchen (yes Mine).
We started talking about food and I asked about people’s favourite cuisine . Weirdly the two French people said they didn’t like cheese, so I was like ‘I love cheese!’ Cos I’m a normal person. Then the chef turned his head and said:
‘Jessica, would you like some cheese? I have some cheese’
LOLLLLLL
I said ‘Jean Louie, that would be lovely thank you’ and he cut me a massive slice of cheese which OF COURSE I shared with everyone (only after I felt all their eyes on me like daggers, but actually 2 people obviously didn’t want any cos they don’t like cheese, which was an absolute result).
Jean-Louie’s kitchen was a basic arrangement of a simple coal fire and a big wooden box of stuff. He managed to prepare a carrot soup to start, plus rice, vegetation’s and chicken for 7 people. We had requested the Vegetarian food, but this message had not been passed on so there was a piece of chicken for both Phil and I.
Look, I’m really trying not to eat meat, and I’m actually doing very well and hardly ever eat it. But when you’ve trekked up a volcano and you’re starving and someone says ‘No there’s definitely enough, please eat this delicious tasty chicken I’ve cooked especially for you’, well, it would have been rude not to wouldn’t it. And also, I really wanted to eat it.
It was so nice all of us squeezed into this little kitchen cabin, cheers-ing with our carrot soups in mugs, eating as all the light disappeared and you could no longer see what was on your plate. If you’ve even done anything like that, trekking in mountains, camping - you’ll know the vibe I’m talking about. Super snug and satisfying. Was great.
Headed back out to check out the volcano and yep, it was still there. So we all looked at it a bit more while the lava bubbled and cracked and the light show continued.
Despite the hot lava (did I mention there was a lava lake??) it was pretty cold so I called it a day and went back to climb into the warm fleece lining and lovely sleeping bag. Phil didn’t head to bed for another hour as was utterly fascinated by the volcano, which of course I do understand, but I was a bit like Well its not going anywhere and I have like starred at it for 2 hours now and my legs are cold so...ya know.
And just before bed, I thought of the BEST idea ever - wait for this. So, the actual toilet option was a 5 minute walk DOWN the volcano then obviously UP again to return. Nah bruv.
I found an empty water bottle and sent Phil to Jean-Louis to get the bottle cut about 15 cm from the top. And thus I had created the perfect camping toilet. Genius, absolute game changer.
*Also - found out the Fleur has so far contracted Malaria no less than SEVEN TIMES. Wow. But she’d totally fine even after that, good to know I thought!

from 95 all the way to 100? 💕🌸
95. Share your favourite quote.
A few faves from the inspo board in my bedroom:
“I didn’t learn to be quiet when I had an opinion. The reason they knew who I was is because I told them.” -- Ursula Burns
“Always take massive, imperfect action towards your goals because the time might never be ‘just right’.” -- Derric Yuh Ndim
“If you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re probably on the menu.” -- Elizabeth Warren
“Believe that there are no limitations, no barriers to your success -- you will be empowered and you will achieve.” -- Ursula Burns
“What, like it’s hard?” -- Elle Woods
“I Dissent”
“Nada é absoluto. Tudo muda, tudo se move, tudo gira, tudo voa e desaparece.” -- Frida Kahlo
96. What is the meaning of life?
I don’t think there’s only one meaning, but for me, right now in this period of my life, it’s to enjoy the everyday and help others enjoy theirs as much as you can.
97. Do you like horror movies?
Not at all.
98. Have you ever made your mum cry? What happened?
Thinking about it now, I don’t think I’ve ever seen my mom cry at all.
(That probably has something to do with why I’m embarrassed about how much I cry -- and probably why I can’t deal with my emotions properly, and thus start crying).
99. Do you feel lucky or special in a way?
I definitely feel lucky in that I’m super privileged. I grew up in an upper class family, in a wealthy neighborhood, received an amazing education, never had to worry about when my next meal would be, and my parents are still together (so far). I’m a white woman who doesn’t have to fear the police or worry about whether a hair stylist will know how to handle my hair or not. I’m so privileged in so many ways.
Special, though? I guess. I’m unique in that I’m my own person. I’m not like anyone else (because we all have different experiences and personalities and qualities), and I don’t try to be.
100. Can you keep a secret?
It’s one of my best qualities! Lol, no but really -- tell me something confidential and I’ll take it to my grave.
Thank you so much for the asks, lovely! They were really fun.

I have now seen Solo and I thought that I should probably give my view on here because as a lover of the Star Wars universe, a keen collector of Star Wars Lego and an adult woman child, it might have some relevance to my few readers.
Firstly did I enjoy it? Yes, I enjoyed the movie on the whole. Am I in a rush to see it again as I did with the Last Jedi or even Rogue One? Not particularly.
Here is why... SPOILER ALERT!
I had my reservations about this movie, Han Solo is a fairly well explored character from the original trilogy, we know that he is a bit of a scoundrel and has a past as a smuggler, so there was not a lot to tell here really. We also know that the film had its problems during production. The first directors were sacked for not following the vision that Lucasfilm had for the movie. The guy who took over was Ron Howard and he has some pedigree with movie making, with some family favourites to his name. The lead actor was rumoured to have needed acting coaching throughout production and to be honest I did find his performance a little naive at times. However, this is the Han Solo origin story, so maybe I was actually picking up on him finding his feet as a character?
Before I went into the movie, I was really looking forwards to the bit of a romp set in the Star Wars universe, I avoided the trailers, I stayed away from most of the hype and I feel that because of this I had a far better experience. To my mind, some bits of the movie were really very good, however some parts of it left me feeling a bit cold and as I sat there in the dark, I did wonder why I was feeling those feelings.
What did I like? Quite a lot of it really...
I liked the explanation for how Han got his name, I also loved the recruitment officer who signed him up for imperial service. This was one of the better scenes at the beginning of the movie.
The meeting of Han and Chewie was brilliant, my heart was breaking for Chewie when we see him for the first time. He is such a noble being, a true gentle warrior, so seeing him and Han create an alliance that goes on to become a great friendship was lovely, then seeing them shower together was hilarious and to be honest, this was essential to the story. It was a throw away joke, but it needed to be seen. I have for years wondered how Chewie kept his fur nice and here we see it, he is a walking advert for posh hydrating shampoo!
I really liked how Chewie and Han made their alliance with Becket’s crew through Han’s determination to escape from the Empire. I liked Becket too and enjoyed the character right up until the end.
Donald Glover as Lando was good casting, he is all charm, wit and deceit. Discovering that his ship was impounded was also a lot of fun, but the reason for it being so was not really hinted at. If he was such a successful gambler, even with his cheating, why was it there? His droid L3 was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed the fact that she demands respect and campaigns for droid civil rights. The later discussion about how she thinks that Lando is in love with her had a sad element for me, when Qi’ra asks how it would work? For those of us in the LGBT world, this is a question that is asked all too often. Frankly, if Lando loved his droid, then good, she was entirely lovable. The subtle hints that Lando and her did have a more physical relationship was rather sweet.
Breaking out of the mine was awesome, Chewie finding his family was captivating and seeing the love between them was powerful. As Chewie explained to one of them that he had to leave with Han, the two Wookies embraced and the love was desperate. It had never occurred to me how much Chewie had sacrificed to spend his days with his best friend. This moment was for me one of the most powerful moments in the whole film and yet it was one of those blink and you miss it moments. There is a lot of heart in this movie.
The reveal at the end of the movie as to who Qi’ra is working with actually gave me tingles. At first I thought that it as Palpatine, but when the face came into view and yes, it was him... I could have jumped from my seat. The familiar face of Ray Park as Maul was truly welcome and ties into his exploits in the Clone Wars saga and later Rebels.
Speaking of evil, the Imperial destroyer appearing in the maelstrom was wonderful as was the filthy mud covered uniforms of the troopers. In fact, the imperial army looked better here than they have in any of the other movies, including my favourite Rogue One! They performed brilliantly as an oppressive regime with some officers being easily bribed, while other actually believed that they were bringing peace and prosperity to the universe. I refer you back to the recruitment officer, a role that was maybe a brief moment of excellence in an otherwise bleak army life.
So with all of that positive stuff, was there anything that I did not enjoy? Yes, unfortunately and all of it was irritating little bits that felt unfinished or down right silly. My first point comes right at the beginning of the movie. The ground effect is what allows Earth based craft to hover at great speed and fly across the planet. This works on land and water, hence why vehicles like Ekranoplans work so well. So why are Star Wars speeders restricted to using road ways when they could happily fly across the water too? This is very silly and needs an explanation.
During the train heist, Val (played by Thandie Newton) effectively killed herself, which was a waste of her otherwise great character. Was there really any need to kill her, particularly in that foolish suicidal way? A better story for her could have been worked out and ensured that she faced her mortality with a degree of dignity rather than giving up her life just to steal some posh jet fuel!
Likewise, the destruction of the under used L3 and then to see her mind transferred into the Falcon, felt like some rather crude gap filling. OK, this leads on to a later aspect of the franchise when C3PO exclaims during episode five that the ship has a rather peculiar dialect. But the execution of it just felt hashed and unnecessary. It also devalued her once again, thus proving her point that electronic sentience is treated as property, just like the organic slaves that we are actually supposed to feel empathy for while they are freed, unlike the mechanical beings. The message here was too messed up to work properly.
The lack of explanation of Qi’ra’s back story was for a purpose, but it was left unanswered even at the end. Have they left it open for more story telling or to encourage fans to check out the Clone Wars? The problem with that is by Dave Felony’s own description, the Clone Wars was itself unfinished. If Qi’ra does appear in the Clone Wars, was seeing her here a massive spoiler? Sadly I have only the first original Clone Wars and a couple of the rebooted first season, so I cannot tell for sure.
There was a lot to like about this movie, but there is also something to criticise. Did I enjoy it? Yes, I did and rather a lot. However, there were parts to this film that felt like they dragged or they lacked the needed power to push the story forwards. Will I buy the Blu-ray when it comes out? Yes of course. Will I watch it again at the cinema? Not sure, but if the chance arises, then probably. After all, this is not a bad movie and it is certainly not terrible, but as with all Star Wars movies, there are some aspects that could have been made better to make it a superb ADULT level film... Bugger, this is a kids movie isn’t it? That explains it. They created this charming, happy little film to be suitable for younger viewers too. To this end, it shows a little and it is vital to remember this when watching these movies. They are family fun, with a little bit of tragedy. Rogue One was special, being a tragedy from the outset, this one has differs by having a lot to make it lighter in its tone even during the bleak or sad parts.
If you have not yet seen the film, then you were a bit silly reading this first, unless you are not really that bothered by the movie. In truth though, you should probably go and see it, it is worth the time and the money and I wish Lucasfilm and Disney the best of luck with the movie and I hope that they continue to produce high quality Star Wars movies. For all of those who wish to direct their hatred towards Kathleen Kennedy for making these movies, I think that you should probably take a long hard look at yourselves and maybe even think about what it is you really want from the franchise. Bare in mind though that I am one of those rare types who will actually admit to enjoying Episode One (although Jar Jar is a bit of a cunt, being a hidden Sith!).

four web optimization Methods for Programmatic Websites

four web optimization Methods for Programmatic Websites
Tumblr media
Planning and executing web optimization methods for websites with a whole lot of hundreds of thousands of pages isn’t any straightforward activity, however there are methods to make it easier.
Programmatic pages are pages which have been generated robotically on a really massive scale. web optimization methods for these pages are used to goal a number of key phrase variations by creating touchdown pages at that scale robotically.
You’ll usually discover these pages in main verticals like e-commerce, actual property, journey, and informational websites. These verticals are counting on programmatic pages to construct their web optimization technique, they usually have a devoted web page for every product and class. This arrange can result in a whole lot of hundreds of thousands of pages — they’re environment friendly, purposeful, and user-friendly, nonetheless, they do include some web optimization challenges.
In my expertise, the great web optimization technique coated on this submit works finest when tailor-made to suit a big web site with programmatic pages. Many methods that usually work for websites with only some hundred pages will not essentially get the identical outcomes on bigger websites. Small websites depend on guide and meticulous content material creation, in comparison with programmatic pages, that are the principle traffic-driving pages of the positioning.
So, let’s get all the way down to enterprise! I’ll discover the 4 main web optimization challenges you will encounter when coping with programmatic pages, and unpack learn how to overcome them.
1. Key phrase analysis and key phrase modifiers
Well-planned keyword research is without doubt one of the largest challenges when working on a programmatic scale. When engaged on a large set of pages and key phrases, it’s necessary to decide on and discover the suitable key phrases to focus on throughout all pages.
In an effort to operate each effectively and successfully, it’s advisable that you just divide web site pages into a number of templates earlier than digging into the analysis itself. Some examples of those templates might embody:
Classes
Sub-categories
Product pages
Static pages
Blogs
Informational pages
Data base/studying
Upon getting all of the web page templates in place, it is time to construct key phrase buckets and key phrase modifiers.
Key phrase modifiers are further key phrases that, when you mix them along with your head phrases and core key phrases, assist with lengthy tail technique. For instance, modifiers for the pinnacle time period “amazon stock” may be something associated to market share, statistics, insights, and so on.
Programmatic pages usually maintain the vast majority of the positioning’s pages. (Take Trulia, for instance, which has over 30 million listed pages — the vast majority of that are programmatic.) Because of this, these pages are often crucial on a bigger web site, each when it comes to quantity and search alternative. Thus, you will need to guarantee using the suitable key phrase modifiers throughout every web page template’s content material.
In fact, you may’t go over each single web page and manually modify the web optimization tags. Think about an internet site like Pinterest making an attempt to do this — they’d by no means end! . On a web site with 30-100 million pages, it’s unattainable to optimize every certainly one of them individually. That is why it’s essential to make the modifications throughout a set of pages and classes — it’s essential to provide you with the suitable key phrase modifiers to implement throughout your varied web page templates so you may effectively deal with the duty in bulk.
The primary distinction right here, in comparison with typical key phrase analysis, is the deal with key phrase modifiers. It’s a must to discover related key phrases that may be repeatedly carried out throughout all related pages.
Let’s check out this use case on a inventory funding web site:
Tumblr media
The instance above reveals an internet site that’s focusing on customers/traders with informational intent, and that depends on programmatic pages for the web optimization technique. I discovered the key phrase modifier by conducting key phrase analysis and competitor analysis.
I researched a number of related, main web sites utilizing Moz’s Key phrase Explorer and SimilarWeb’s Search Site visitors function, and famous the preferred key phrase teams. After I’d amassed the key phrase teams, I discovered the search quantity of every key phrase to find out which of them can be the preferred and related to focus on
Upon getting the key phrase modifiers, you will need to implement them throughout the title tags, descriptions, headline tags, and content material on the web page template(s) the modifiers are for. Even while you multiply this technique by hundreds of thousands of pages, having the suitable key phrase modifier makes updating your programmatic pages a a lot simpler course of and far more environment friendly.
When you have a template of pages ordered by a particular subject, you can replace and make modifications throughout all of the pages with that subject, for instance, a inventory info web site with a selected kind of inventory web page, or a class with shares primarily based on a worth/trade. One replace will have an effect on all of the pages in the identical class, so in the event you replace the web optimization title tag of the template of a inventory web page, then all pages in the identical class will probably be up to date as properly.
Within the instance above, the intent of the key phrases is informational. Key phrase intent focuses on learn how to match search intents to key phrase modifiers. We’re focusing on searchers who wish to collect sure insights. They need extra info relating to shares or firms, market caps, professional evaluations, market developments, and so on. On this case, it is advisable so as to add further key phrases that can embody questions similar to “how?”, “what?”, and “which?”.
As one other instance, transactional key phrases — that are a greater match for e-commerce and B2C web sites — are extremely efficient for addressing searches with buy intent. These phrases can embody “buy”, “get”, “purchase”, and “shop”.
2. Inner linking
Smart internal linking plans are very important for big websites. They’ve the power to considerably improve the variety of listed pages, then move hyperlink fairness between pages. If you work on huge websites, certainly one of your foremost priorities needs to be to verify Google will uncover and index your web site’s pages.
So, how do you have to go about constructing these inner linking options?
When wanting on the large image, the objective is that Web page A will hyperlink to Web page B and Web page C, whereas Web page B will hyperlink to Web page D and Web page E, and so on. Ideally, every web page will get a minimum of one hyperlink from a distinct listed web page on the positioning. For programmatic websites, the problem right here is the truth that new pages emerge each day. Along with the prevailing pages, it’s crucial to calculate and venture with the intention to jumpstart inner linking for the brand new pages. This helps these pages get found rapidly and listed within the correct trend.
Associated pages and “people also viewed”
One technique that makes hyperlink constructing simpler is including a “related pages” part to the positioning. It provides worth for the consumer and the crawlers, and likewise hyperlinks to related pages primarily based on affinity.
Tumblr media
You possibly can hyperlink to comparable content material primarily based on class, product kind, content material, or simply about every other descriptive aspect. Comparable content material needs to be sorted in numeric order or alphabetical order.
HTML sitemap
Sure, even massive web sites are utilizing HTML sitemaps to assist crawlers discover new pages. They’re extraordinarily efficient when engaged on massive scale websites with hundreds of thousands of pages.
Tumblr media
Let’s check out this instance from the Trulia HTML sitemap (shown above): Trulia constructed their HTML sitemap primarily based on alphabetical order, and in a manner that ensures all pages have hyperlinks. This fashion, there will not be any orphan pages, which helps their objective of supplying hyperlink juice to all pages that they want to index.
Normally, many e-commerce and actual property web sites are sequencing their sitemaps by alphabetical/categorical order to ensure that no web page will probably be alone.
three. Crawl finances and deindexing guidelines
Crawl finances is an important problem that enormous web sites want to contemplate. When you’ve gotten tens of hundreds of thousands of programmatic pages, it’s essential to make certain Google persistently finds and indexes your most dear pages. The worth of your pages needs to be primarily based on content material, income, enterprise worth, and consumer satisfaction.
First, select which pages shouldn’t be listed:
Use your favourite evaluation instrument to find which pages have the bottom engagement metrics (excessive bounce charges, low averages of time on web site, no web page views, and so on.).
Use the search console to find which pages have excessive impressions and low CTRs.
Mix these pages into one checklist.
Check to see if they have any incoming links.
Analyze the attribution of these pages to income and enterprise leads.
Upon getting all the related information and also you select the pages that needs to be faraway from index, add no-index tag to all of them and exclude them from sitemap XML.
I work for SimilarWeb, an internet site with over 100 million pages, and I ran a no-index test on over 20 million pages primarily based on the guidelines above. I needed to see the influence of eradicating a excessive quantity pages from our natural channel.
The outcomes had been unimaginable.
Though we misplaced over half one million visits over the course of a month, the general engagement metrics on programmatic pages improved dramatically.
Tumblr media

By eradicating irrelevant pages, I made extra room for related and worthwhile pages to be found by the Google bot.
Rand Fishkin additionally has a extremely complete guidelines, which reveals you learn how to determine if a page is low quality according to Google. One other nice instance is Britney Muller’s experiment, the place she deindexed 75% of Moz’s pages with nice outcomes.
four. web optimization cut up testing
Take a look at every little thing! The benefit when engaged on a big scale web optimization marketing campaign is that you’ve got entry to large information and may put it to use to your web optimization efforts. In contrast to common A/B testing, which checks human conduct, A/B cut up testing is solely for crawlers.
The cut up testing course of is often primarily based on the identical or comparable templates of pages. Cut up the web page into two or three teams — one group acts as a management, whereas the opposite teams are enabled. Take a look at the next standards:
Including structured information
Altering the key phrase modifier of web optimization tags (title tag, description, H tags, and so on.)
Picture ALT tags
Content material size
Web page efficiency
Inner linking
By way of measuring the efficiency, I like to recommend utilizing one experiment at a time. As an illustration, you may regulate web optimization tags first, after which proceed testing different verticals after you’ve constructed some confidence.
Diving right into a cut up testing instance, let’s have a look at Etsy. Etsy needed to check which title tag would rank increased and drive higher CTR, and usually enhance the natural visitors to the pages that had been examined. Within the picture under, we will see how they carried out the cut up check between management pages with default title tags towards check pages with completely different tag variations in this article.
Pinterest’s dashboard additionally reveals how their progress workforce depends on cut up testing experiments for his or her web optimization technique. Pinterest’s objective was to construct an experimentation instrument that may assist them measure the influence of web optimization modifications to their rankings and natural visitors.
Now it’s your flip
Since programmatic pages are completely different from most others, it’s crucial that you just construct and optimize these pages in the suitable manner. This requires a number of changes out of your regular web optimization technique, together with the applying of latest and proprietary methods. The advantage of utilizing the method outlined above is the incremental scale with which you’ll be able to contribute to what you are promoting.
Programmatic web page searches are supposed to suit the search question, whether or not it’s by product search, deal with, or info. For this reason it’s essential to verify the content material is as distinctive as doable, and that the consumer can have the perfect reply for every question.
When you grasp the 4 ways above, you’ll be capable of implement them into your web optimization technique and start seeing higher outcomes to your programmatic pages.

Author’s note: This post was written in the summer of 2017. It’s taken me nearly three years to grow the courage to post it publicly.  Time heals all wounds!  I hope you enjoy.
Tumblr media
Waving goodbye to Amsterdam, our home for 3 years.
Did you know – moving a family of four and two pets to a foreign country is hard. In fact, it’s a giant logistical nightmare. I did. I learned that lesson, I learned it so hard 3 years ago moving to the Netherlands and muddling through immigration paperwork and not having a bank account because we don’t have a BSN yet (it’s like a social security number) and we can’t paid and we can’t get a BSNt….and so on and on and on. It’s a doom loop. It’s a doom loop in Dutch. But moving abroad has become like childbirth to me, after a couple of years I forget the pain and do it again. And there’s a lot of crying.  And nobody sleeps.
But this time it would be in English, and therefore much easier, right?  We’re only moving about an hour’s flight away, how bad can it be? Besides, we’re seasoned expats, wiser and more experienced now. Step 1 – book flights. Several times a day flights buzz between Holland and Scotland. They’re cheap and plentiful. No problem! Wait, what?  We can’t fly the dog on EasyJet or any of the quick jumpers into the UK. Hmmmm. Look, a fairy! I mean, look – a ferry! They have a kennel. Perfect for a multi-species move. Yes yes yes! Let’s move by ferry. How cool and adventurous. It’d be uber Zipp-like to move to a foreign country by ferry. We shall invade Scotland by sea! Neat-o.
Tumblr media
Our previous experience with boats in Amsterdam gave us undue confidence. What could possibly go wrong?
So, we just book the tickets, 2 cabins for us + my mom (who so graciously/foolishly agreed to come visit/help us not commit acts of homicide while we pack and move). Check. Next we book the dog into the pet hotel. Check. Great. Now just notify them we are bringing Kitty as a carry-on (like we did on the plane when we moved to A’dam). Wait, huh? Why is it not allowing us to add the cat. Try it again. What if we depart from Rotterdam? Ugh. Call them. Sprek je Engels? Huh? We can’t have the cat on board without a car? But we don’t want to keep the car. We want to sell it so we can buy a UK car with a right-side-of-the-car-steering-wheel when we get there. It’s going to be difficult enough unlearning how to drive American-like in the UK. Oh, shut the front door! Are we really going to keep an ailing French mini-van with a passenger-side window that won’t roll down and a steering wheel on the wrong side of the car for a 5lb cat? Yes. Yes, that is exactly what we are going to do. Because life. Because family expatting is a series of maddening choices and ridiculous adaptations. It’s a relentless state of absurdity. Because that’s how Zipps do. No creature left behind. Check.
Ok, transport of humans and pets secured. Now what about our stuff? Step 2 – pack up and go. This time around, in the most adulting moment of my life thus far, we hired actual professional movers to pack up our shit. Why not? My employer is paying relocation expenses. Well done, Dr. Fancy Pants. I thought we were well organised. We laughed at how much we’d accumulated in 3 years. Wasn’t it just yesterday we packed ALL of our belongings into 9 Army duffle bags and boarded the plane to Amsterdam? Yeah, we moved our entire family across the Atlantic packed into 9 bags. Nothing more. And one half of those bags was my Ph.D. fieldwork papers. (Fun tip – we precisely weighed each bag by using the scale at the vet’s office where we went approximately 743 times trying to get the appropriate Pet Passport for the dog). Now, the movers handed me the inventory list – 100 boxes. 100 boxes? WTH? No matter, it was all out of sight, out of mind for now. See you on the flipside, boxes of crap. We’re down to the bare minimum. T-minus 9 days to departure. Just a few more issues to tidy up, then it’s time to kick back, relax and enjoy our final week in the lovely city of Amsterdam (stay tuned for a post, eventually to be written, on my deep, warm and conflicted feelings about life in the ‘dam and saying goodbye to my favourite city in the world).
So, we calmly went about packing up our Dutch lives. Er, rather, we scrambled every last minute, failing to find more than a few fleeting moments of peace in our last days there. We sold stuff on a thousand different marketplaces. We patched holes and fretted over which dishes were ours and which came with the apartment, etc. because our skeevy landlord will try to cheat us (separating expats from their security deposits is a hobby of Dutch landlords). I remember the feeling 3 years ago, whilst scrambling to pack up our American lives. Just get to the airport. Once we get checked in at the airport, we can relax. Breath. Panic. Breath. Repeat.
Tumblr media
Delierious with joy over are good choices, smart planning and simple lifestyle. Also pictured: cat that almost ruined everything, twice.
We tried, desperately, to capture the final bike rides and boat rides on camera. Fleeting moments of exquisite presence. We tried to celebrate, laugh, hug, cry and properly say goodbye to our family of expats. We tried to make space for our girls to spend those final, fleeting days with their buddies. Good god, we have been through some shit with these people over the past 3 years. Expat friendships, for big and little ones, are bonded in a crucible. Never forget this place. This stuff has been magical. Breath. Have presence. Enjoy? Pack, organise, DO SOMETHING. Did you cancel the internet service? Pay the parking ticket? How do we forward the mail? Notify the Belastingdienst? Sprek je Engels?
And that’s when we noticed the cat was missing. Yes, the cat. The cat that caused us to keep the car. The car that caused us to pay a shit ton more for the ferry. The ferry that will take us to Scotland. The Scotland that will distill the whisky. The whisky that will taste so good when we drink it.  But I digress . . . the next few hours were a furious chaos of packing and loading and searching for the fecking cat. The children are weeping for the cat. My mom is organizing a search party while I cooly ignore this tangent of madness, because I am confident the cat is simply hiding. “The cat is missing, mom. Start acting like it!” my sweet youngest daughter screams at me and slams the door. I ignore her and discreetly throw out bags of forgotten little toy scraps that no one will remember so long as they aren’t seen during the throwing out process. Hours later, the cat is found hiding under a bed. I smugly chastise my panicked family. They fail to thank me for my calm resolve.
In spite all of our diligent #adulting, expensive movers and good intentions, here we are, literally running from the apartment with armloads of shit dumped out from random drawers whilst the landlord arrived from the other side of the building for our final check out.
It was like a scene from a Benny Hill movie, I’m sure. Cut to scene – exterior of building, black and white at 1.5 speed: Zipp parents frantically scrambling and stumbling out the front door, arms laden with useless plastic items, while the Landlord calmly strolls in the back door, clipboard and magnifying glass in hand. Cut to shot of kids, pets and granny in the car screaming, crying and flailing wildly.  Cut to Aaron opening driver door, pointing forward confidently and saying: Onward march – take to the seas! (in the captions). Can you hear the music?
People overuse the term, “stuffed in like a can of sardines.”  This is not one of those times.  We stuffed said crap into every nook and cranny of our van. So, there we were; 4 Zipps, my mom, our old dog with bad gas and a cat.  Everyone but the driver had items crammed under and around her feet as well as on her lap/between her body and the door or other passenger. I am not exaggerating. It felt difficult to breath in there. When we finally pulled up to the ferry door, I yelled at my children – “act natural, pretend like you have plenty of room! And for God’s sake, don’t mention the head lice!” I thought we might be over the weight limit or something. I knew we were technically one centimeter over the height limit, although I was sure the massive weight load was compressing us down at least that much.
We love our pets, Nana is losing her mind!
Jonah (the dog) smells funny
Pipsqueak the Mighty
Maybe if the kids just smile at the check in guy they’ll let us go without any questions. I really don’t know, the whole thing was so sketchy because we weren’t sure if our car was too tall with the roof carrier on top and we were still recovering from some confusion regarding the pets on board (Fun Fact – Our 70lb geriatric labrador was perched up on a stack of luggage in the back of the van so high he could not get out on his own accord. So while we were waiting in line for the ferry (for hours) I had to unload and load him in “gently” whilst containing the stack of threatening-to-spill-out luggage with one knee. It was a long line. He had to get checked in too. My “gentle” level decreased with each outing). For once the gods smiled upon us and no one asked questions. We rolled in and were literally the last car on our platform. After a brief game of where-the-hell-is-the-cat-that-required-us-to-bring-a-wrong-side-of-the-road-driving-car-to-the-UK?, we deboarded the van and checked into our cabins.
My mom has never in 12 years of grandmothering ever chosen to not spend more time with her grandkids. But that night, with her head bent in (what I think was a bit of shame or guilt) she asked if she could have the key to a cabin and stay alone. Without her grandbabies. Yes mom, save yourself.  We broke the Na-na. My mom has never before or since rejected a moment’s time with her dear little grandchildren. I rejected the urge to jump overboard.
Tumblr media
Ferry of Doom or Ferry of Freedom?
But we made it. We were on the ferry. Breathe. Deep sigh of relief. Enjoy the ride. It was fun and adventurous to travel by ferry. I highly recommend it. 15+ hours later, with minimal sleep and a deep sense of relief mixed with sadness, we calmly exited the ferry. Just a wee three hour drive to our new home.  Left, left, left. Remember to drive on the left, honey. We inched forward in an endless procession of vehicles exiting the ferry.  Last in, last out.
That’s when Aaron turned to me, panicked face – “oh shit, we’re out of gas!”  In the mayhem getting to the ferry, we forgot to fill up. OMG. We cannot run out of gas on a ferry or in the border patrol line.  No exaggeration at all, we were on E. It gets worse.  When we finally got off the ferry, there was a line of cars snaking its way to the border gate. We would never make it. This was a trail of tears, eeking forward a car’s length every 5 minutes. It was a minimum hour wait and we had a maximum 15 minutes of fuel.
One last time, I un-gently unpacked the dog from the back of the van to walk him.  A border agent passed and I tearfully pleaded our case.  “Well, we don’t need a broken down vehicle holding up this line.” He was so kind, really un-Dutch in his kindness and willingness to help. Within minutes, we were ushered around the line to front.  We pulled up to the border entrance window. Wait, oops. The driver is on the wrong side. Ha ha ha! I was in the passenger seat. Let me just roll down the window to hand you the passports…oh, yeah. The window-roller-downer is broken. Ha ha ha. Aaron, if you just pull up a tad, I can open the door. Oops, sorry everyone in line behind us! Here ya go, border patrol lady.  I stepped out and handed the agent our clutch of passports. “Your Visas haven’t yet been processed, so you’ll need to re-enter another time.”  Wait, what now?  We can’t come in?  We chatted. We worked it out. Kindness and understanding from her and her colleagues that I cannot understate. Sorted, as the Scottish say.  She let us through, although I’m not sure we entered 100% legally.
Bumbling and fumbling, we crossed the finish line to begin again.  Stay left, keep the rubber side down and journey onward. Love, trust and (Gaelic) pixiedust.

The Story Behind My Book The GreatDrams of Scotland
With The GreatDrams of Scotland, my inaugural book, having finally been released, I have collated a bunch of answers that I have been asked about the journey to getting published, the pride of having written something that hopefully thousands of whisky lovers and learners the world over will enjoy and what’s next. I felt it only fitting that as well as these answers being published into magazines, newspapers and websites all over the place, that you, my faithful and loyal GreatDrams readers should get to read a bit more about the journey too.

How long have you been interested in whisky?
Since I was about 19, my father had just passed away and I knew he enjoyed the stuff so I set about discovering what I could about the drink and trying to find what flavour profile worked for me; he was very much a Bell’s, Johnnie Walker Black and Teacher’s drinker; I wanted to see what else was out there… but even now I still come back to a couple of his favourites from time to time.
What is it about Scotch in particular that appeals to you?
The people, the diversity of flavour and the legend around the drink; what other drink has so much storytelling and chat around it? I think you’d find it pretty hard to match whisky’s prowess in myth, legend and passion. The people are extraordinary; I used to work with design agencies on FMCG brands in the homeware, personal care and soft drinks categories… all owned by mega brands, and even the brands in whisky owned by the ‘big guys’ are still operated, produced, marketed and sold with a passion that smashes other categories out of the park.
Are you a fan of whisky books?
Love them, I have tonnes of them at home - from the hardcore technical side of things to the beautiful photography books and the light reading ones. There is something special about them that capture a moment, a way of thinking and a selection of the best products at that specific time.
How did you want your book to differ from others?
I just want it to be enjoyed; it is not a tome to mark the nth degree of detail, neither is it so light-hearted it is flippant, it is something very personal to me as it collates my tales of enjoyment through understanding whisky and making pilgrimages to the various distilleries, and the brands that have made this spirit so great and so loved the world over.
Can you remember where you were /what you were doing at the moment you decided you wanted to write a book?
I’ve wanted to do it for ages, was actually the 18th September 2014, I sat on the black Chesterfield in my old office and sketched out the look and feel I wanted for the book on Post-Its, then the rough chapter outline and what I wanted to achieve with it… then I mapped it out, but it was about a year later that I started writing properly, and was in the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in London with some hearty single cask whiskies to kick start the creativity.
Are people as important as the liquid when it comes to whisky?
Massively; more in some cases as it is their passion that enables you to feel a dram, feel the sense of place, the provenance, the work, the longevity behind the process that you cannot just get from the liquid, the packaging or the website.
Is the published book the same as you originally to set out to write, or did you change your mind along the way?
Pretty much, although I originally had lofty thoughts and desires to cover all the distilleries in Scotland, then realised pretty sharpish that that was going to be way too much to keep the momentum, energy and attention of both myself and the reader going, so I selected a few brands and distilleries that meant a lot to me.  And this way I might do a second edition with all new distilleries and brands… you never know.
Would you ever want to make whisky yourself?
I have considered it several times, I own a few casks now and yeah am tempted to make the stuff, but the investment is incredible, and would mean not being able to do that I do now so I would prefer to JV or bottle some whiskies independently… watch this space…
How did you choose which brands to feature?
They have all either touched me through their storytelling, their people or I have had a genuine moment with them that has left a mark and reminded me why I love what I do and why I love this great drink.
How long from start to finish did it take to write and publish the book?
Hmmm, from first word to being in print it was about two years… the writing side was around six months of that though! Working with the publisher, RedDoor, and designing the book took much longer than anticipated, but for the right reasons. I’m incredibly proud of this piece of work and hope others enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it.
What feedback did you receive from other whisky professionals and influencers while writing the book?
Mostly that it was a great thing to do and that it sounded like a great concept … which was nice, and kept me going!
How would you describe the written style of the book?
The stories are my experiences with, and interpretations of the brands’ hard work in creating amazing drinks for people the world over to enjoy so telling the stories honestly, hopefully interestingly and with some level of authority is what I was aiming for.
Are visuals a crucial aspect for your readers?
Definitely, they create that sense of place that I cannot do unless in front of people actually reading the book to them, each should tell a tale in its own right and aid understanding.
What was your travel schedule like?
Mental, in a word. In 2015 I visited 33 distilleries, 2016 I saw 28 I think, and thus far in 2017 (at time of writing, September) I’m up to 24 for the year, despite a two-month ‘grounding’ around my son’s due date and the weeks after Archie’s arrival, this year I have spent an average of two days per week travelling to distilleries and meetings for both writing missions and to see my consulting clients… busy times, and I would not have it any other way. I’m actually typing this at 30-thousand feet on my way to Toronto for the launch of the new Glenfiddich Experimental Batch #3, all about using otherwise ‘dead time’ to be productive… on this flight alone I have this to write / compile, two other articles to draft and fifteen YouTube videos, and to build propositions for two new NPD launches going into production in 2018 / 2019… it is NEVER dull at GreatDrams.
How challenging is it to write a book?
It had its moments; I find writing very therapeutic, but I have to be in the right headspace, and not have deadlines or the consulting side of the business on my mind… Per above, I actually wrote most of the book on trains and in the air (on planes) as they are the only real places I have no distractions from the vibrant world of the GreatDrams social media channels.
What is the most fun part of writing a book?
Speaking to the people behind some of my favourite whiskies, and visiting the places they are made too… that and hitting word count targets! When the word count, proofed, fact check spreadsheet showed all green cells indicating they were done and sorted, that was a nice feeling… then came editing, design, bottle shots, cover design and of course the nervous, yet super-exciting moment when I green-lit the printing process. Yikes.
Are all the whiskies in your book on your blog?
Nope, and that’s the beauty of it, it is a hybrid; many of the brands are covered on the site, but quite a few are ones I’ve not had the chance to spend time with before so this gave me the chance to get intimate with them in a different context.
Why did you want to go offline to write a book when your blog is such a successful award-winner?
To appeal to a different audience, to also be able to say ‘I did that’, and also to have created something physical from scratch, a real product, something I’ve wanted to do for years. Articles, PDFs and digital files only give you so much satisfaction after a while…
What is your next project going to look like and will there be another whisky book?
Yep! About 65% of the next book is written… and various other things I cannot talk about, but all very exciting (but I would say that, I try not to work on boring things). Oh and I have a limited edition whisky out too:

Top 6 Gun Cleaning Solvent & Lube Oil Review
There have been a lot of questions sent to utilize regarding that which we believe the best gun cleaning solvents are. In this review, we will have a look at the most well-known options employed by the professionals. The huge majority of gun cleaning kits do not contain a gun cleaning solvent, and that means you'll need to purchase this separately.
A fast clean with a bore snake is only going to require a dab of CLP to clean your firearm. But doing a complete clean will require various cleaners and oils and we are going to insure the ideal gun cleaner lubricants and guards and you'll learn why they are the best.
If you are using a bore snake kit you'll discover that it comes with these two cleaning solvents. If you are not using a bore snake and purchase a gun cleaning kit you're going to have to buy both of these solvents separately.
No. 9 Hoppes Gun Cleaner  Best Bore Cleaner
Why is Hoppe's called the best bore cleaner?
Many people like to use this along with a CLP to clean their firearms. A lot of individuals only use this solvent, rather than utilizing a CLP and find it works just too.
Tumblr media
We have used several unique CLPs over the last few years and by far, Hoppe's is the top bore cleaner which has been the best for over 100 years.
One of my favorite things about this particular bore cleaner is your smell. It is probably one of my favourite smelling oils of all the cleaning products on this listing.
The most important use for the Hoppe's bore cleaner would be to utilize with a boresnake. Boresnakes are not contained in gun cleaning kits but they're essential for cleaning your gun fast.
This can be called a quick clean and just takes about a minute.
Break-Free - Best Gun Cleaner Spray
Over time we have tested just about every CLP looking for the best gun cleaner spray and many people swear by the Break Free CLP and state that it is the best gun cleaning aerosol spray that they have ever used.
It has been a VERY popular selection for years and there have been nothing but positive reviews. In fact, it's the most popular CLP utilized from the US Army to clean most of rifles, pistols, and even tanks!
Break free comes from either aerosol spray cans or spray bottles. Many people prefer the aerosol spay with the small straw on the end, to target person stains.
This CLP has a very large weather tolerance and works in all states, which is why it has become so common.
This solvent cleans like nothing I have ever used and smells great. What used to take 10 minutes with different solvents, takes roughly half the time for this CLP.
It works perfectly with bore snakes on brushes for a whole clean. If your guns are notorious for attracting dust, such as mine are all, these this solvent is a wonder worker. It somehow stops dust and in precisely the exact same time cleans and lubes all in 1 pass.
Characteristics
No harsh smelling chemicals which won't damage the blueing and end of your well-loved firearms. Non-Hazardous, non-toxic and biodegradable, which means you can feel good that cleaning your firearms isn't damaging our environment. Normal CLPs oil can attract dust and sand. Bearing this in mind we went to work on the most effective CLP to arrive at the marketplace that significantly reduces adhesion of debris into a firearms surface. Our CLP provides working components of this firearm enhanced heat dissipation leading to cooler weapon functioning temperatures.
Ballistol Aerosol -- Best Gun Cleaner Spray
Both are alike and have been utilized by many for decades. The Ballistol multipurpose gun gun cleaner was initially developed for the German Army over 100 years back by German scientists, Ballistol could possibly be the very best gun cleaning solvent ever designed.
Many individuals not only use this for their firearms but for protecting and cleaning their boots, knives, cases, packs, clothing, engines, wheels, etc.. It is designed to be non-toxic and has a great earthy odor that is very enjoyable.
A fantastic friend of mine uses this and he says it's the best gun cleaner spray that you can locate.
Many people who I have seen in videos also say this and the key recipe appears to only be used by Ballistol, initially employed by the German scientists.
Characteristics
Biodegradable; won't harm the environment 6 oz.
Slip2000 Gun Cleaner and Lubricant
When searching for the finest gun lubricant and cleaner discovered many that did not fulfill the expectations of the gun owners. What exactly are they saying you may be thinking?
The excellent thing about the Slip2000 is that it's rated for extreme weather conditions, which makes it the best alternative if you're likely to be in very cold or hot climates. Additional CLPs do not work too in extreme cold and the aerosol canisters might not function properly. When the weather is too cold the solvent will turn into goo and become almost impossible to clean.
We always try to ask other shooters what cleaning kits and lubricants they like the most. We were amazed to discover that a good deal of them are turning to this specific lubricant and only this lubricant.
We have seen many youtube videos regarding gun cleaning kits, cleaning guides and CLP guides along with also the one lubricant that keeps popping up from a number of the highest gun educators is one.
Features
This lube remains wet five times more than any other classic lubricant. Reduces friction and wear.
shield against corrosion and won't attract dust, dirt or sand and operates in all types of surroundings.
Will not burn off like a petroleum products and will be safe to use on wood, metal, plastic components.
Does not permit aluminum, carbon, lead and plastic to adhere and will reduce cleanup time by 50 percent.
Non-Toxic and Non-hazardous. Developed along with your health, safety and the environment in mind
Lucas Gun Oil -- Odorless CLP
Lucas gun oil is the favorite option for many hunters as it is odorless. This oil has been created to preventing and over-heating in large high-caliber rifles and machine guns. All it takes is a couple of drops onto the bolt of your pistol or gun and you're good to go. Like most CLPs you don't require a lot and just one little bottle can last quite a long time.
A very inexpensive alternative for any gun operator, be sure to be aware that this isn't a CLP and should just be used for lubricating your firearms after you're done together with your CLP to clean. It serves as a lubricant and shield, thus a popular solution is to utilize the Hoppe's for cleansing along with the Lucas Oil for the second portion of your own cleaning.
Excellent for long term storage Use on fishing reels Excellent home oil
M-Pro7 Best Gun Cleaning Oil
We've gotten a great deal of questions regarding which oil is the finest gun cleaning oil out there. A lot of men and women love M-Pro products and utilize this solvent together with the M-Pro bore snake. I have been using their oil and the protector for a few years and they are one of my favorite. It serves as a lubricant and protector, so you will need a separate cleaner.
A few men and women who I've spoken to who've tried this didn't like the bottle it comes in.
Maybe they need to have tightened it better but that isn't really a danger I wish to take. Aside from the quality of the plastic bottle this is some wonderful LP.
M-Pro7 070-1453 4oz 7 lpx gun oil Product: jar Manufactured by M-Pro7
Cleaner -- Lubricant -- Protectant
Hoppe's No. 9 -- Greatest Gun Cleaner Lubricant
This can be Amazons #1 Pick for your finest gun cleaner lubricant, so we must include it to the list. A very popular option, in a totally equipped jar with tight child proof lid. One of the most common CLP combos is the and the Hoppe's No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner and also the Cotton Swabs with Wooden Handles (Bundle of 100).
Why is this one so common? Hoppe's has existed for a very long period and have developed a massive assortment of different gun cleaning solvents which you can find on their website. They are a trusted brand and their products are really some of the best, particularly their bore cleaning and lubricating oils.
Many lubricants are non-synthetic making them a bit different from this . A lot of men and women swear by this artificial compound that has been a popular Hoppe's merchandise for more than a century. They've been testing and improving the compound for a very long time and it really is one of the best lubricants and protectants.
A complex oil especially designed for the modern firearm Provides a barrier against moisture and rust Also works good on fishing lines and other mechanics Superior lubrication and protection to all areas of your firearm decreasing the wear and tear caused by friction Manufactured in the USA
Tetra -- Best Gun Grease
When preserving your firearm after cleansing you want to utilize the finest gun grease to preserve it for quite a while. When you buy a new firearm often times you will discover it has a light coat of grease on each the metallic components.
This helps to stop corrosion that can build up while on the shelf in the shop. If the gun is in the first box you are able to assume it's been greased from the manufacturer. Most gun stores will reduce the gun before purchasing it.
The point I'm trying to create here is that grease is intended to safeguard your gun for long-term storage. The Tetra dirt is colorless and is intended to rub on your gun until you store it away. It's a powerful odor however the small will fade in approximately 24 hours.
This grease is largely intended to be rubbed onto firearms that will be stored for long intervals. The reason why oils are not recommended is that over time oil will begin to evaporate or harden which will end up damaging your firearm over time.
With grease, you won't have this problem and it can stay perfectly oiled for many years. However, once you wait to use the gun it's suggested to take out the dirt and give it a fantastic wash with a CLP.
Pro-Shot -- Best Needle Oiler CLP
Lots of people like to incorporate a needle oiler within their own gun cleaning kit. This is the best needle oiler we can find and it was a tough choice between this and hoppe's. But we are getting tired of putting all hoppe's goods on our listing, so we thought we'd check the competition.
For the most part, people can not tell the difference between the hoppe's, aside from the price difference. This one is less costly and has a great red liquid and better needle.
Not only does this shield but it also cleans and lubes the parts of your gun that you simply touch with this needle. This is created for hard to reach spots and many people like the plan of the needle and bottle and buy it just for this and then replace it with the CLP of their choice.
Great for those otherwise unreachable areas with traditional application methods Anti-wear additives, Anti-Oxidants Offers superior smooth functionality and Protection on all moving metal parts All Professional Shot products made in USA from USA parts
Things to Consider: After using a gun cleaning solvent
As soon as it's not so tough to pick out a good cleaning solvent, there are so many to choose from that it can be confusing. We hope that our Top 10 List answers the majority of the usual questions however we wanted to give a couple other tips and suggestions when it comes to choosing the best gun cleaning solvent.
Secure your Firearm While cleaning your firearm, you should use a fantastic gun vise to secure it. While it's not completely necessary, it is going to help prevent you from scratching the interior of the barrel and damaging other components of your guns. Do not make the mistake of employing a conventional seat vise, as this may EASILY damage your guns.
Anything to cover the expensive surfaces is always a fantastic idea. It's easy to make DIY gun mat for a couple bucks and can end up saving you a time and money when that bottle of CLP tips over and spills everywhere.
Do not let it simmer! Always check to be certain the cap is on additional tight. A lot of individuals frequently complain to me about their CLP leaking all over their equipment and it can ruin it because it's hard to get out. This can simply be avoided by tightening the lid making certain the jar is not upside down when you pack it away.
OR
Utilize some plastic bottles that do not leak and tag them. I love to do this because you can store several smaller cleaning detergent bottles in one storage container.
If you're planning to take your solvents with you when you begin shooting, you should always keep them at a good gun cleaning box. This can be something as simple as a handle box or your gutter cleaning kit bag. Many solvents are known to leak, which explains why it's very important to keep them separate from your every-day gear.
How's the Weather?
One of the greatest things to consider with CLPs is your climate. Should you take along an aerosol spray to the freezing cold, then you might find yourself with a couple of freezing issues.
The kind of CLP you use must be suited to the climate you are going to be shooting in. Most all solvents listed on this page operate in intense weather requirements but not all of them are designed for it, so make sure you double-check.
Kinds of Firearms Various solvents are created for different guns. If you are cleaning a classic black powder pistol worth $5,000 then you might choose to pay extra careful attention to your solvents.
The majority of these solvents are designed for average modern firearms. But they'll work for elderly guns and you should not have a lot to be worried about.
Why Gun Cleaning Solvents Are Important You wish to protect your gun against the components and make certain it will fire if you want it to.
Here is the intention of a gun cleaning solvent. Some solvents are much better than others and some are designed to perform specific things.
We try to provide a little bit about each different solvent, so that you are able to make an informed decision. While we've are personal favorite solvents, we do not want this to reflect your decision-making procedure because there are so many out there that I have never had a chance to try all of them.
Maintaining your firearm clean using a fantastic cleaning solvent (CLP) is probably the best thing you can do. As well as taking the time to use a proper gun cleaning kit to wash it on a regular basis.
You need to stop moisture buildup and condensation. If your rifle is moist and you let it sit on a shelf or in a secure for a few days, you'll discover it can quickly rust. Any water left on your gun is a really bad idea and may quickly ruin it.
Our Verdict: What's the Best Gun Cleaning Solvent? We took a vote last month at a gun club that I belong to and here is the outcome.
While it ought to be used in conjunction with other solvents because it is not technically a CLP -- It's the best bore cleaner. However, it is only a Cleaner rather than a Lubricator or Protector. I have known a few people who use it like a CLP and their guns are only fine but I love to use the aerosol sprays.
1 small can of the stuff can last you about 2 decades and it's among the best aerosol CLP sprays on the market, hands down.
Conclusion Choosing the finest gun cleaning solvent is quite important if you want your firearms to perform at peak performance. Do not just go with the major name brand products and hope for the best since there are new products coming out all the time which are using new technology.
We heard there is no all in a single best gun cleaning solvent and also you might need to use several solvents to keep your firearms clean based upon what you ne

Piracy Thread – Necessity of Strong Anti Piracy Laws
Piracy is bad, all of us recognize that. Downloading pirated software from the Internet, is just like stealing something from a shop. We know that also. Stores suffer anti piracy protection great loses because of theft, so as applications creators. The main distinction is, the initial ones, don’t try to minimize their loses, at the expense of the customers. It’s been quite some time since software companies began to implement in their applications, anti-piracy mechanisms. It is clear as everyone would want to protect their work, from being stolen, altered or used without permission. The question is, just how far can you go with it?
It started with easy serial numbers or scanning in a given world from paper manual shipped with the program. Somewhat time-consuming, but it worked. So long as you’d the installation disk and manual, an individual could easily install, re-install the program a dozen times a day, without having to explain the reason why. But since the online popularity grew, it started new possibilities of applications protection — activation services. The mechanism is pretty easy: purchase applications, enter unique product key, validate it via Web and you’re ready to go. Simple? Not really…
Few people understand, that most firms established a limitation of possible activations per serial number. Why? In theory, because each permit is valid only for X number of computers. So to ensure, that we don’t share ours with all our Facebook stop acta friends, a limit is present. The catch is, if we choose to format our hard disk and do an original system installation, all software that require reactivation, will treat like a new one, and so the counter will go 1 up. Now imagine what could happen, in case your hard disk breaks down.
You send it to a service. It’s returned, you re-install all, but after a month the problem returns. Again and again. When finally the faulty component becomes replaced correctly, another effort of reactivating your favourite software gets rejected. Why? Because limitation of possible activations was reached.
What can you do? Call support centre and ask to enable one, to activate your applications. Almost always the answer is positive, but… I have the software, so why so I want to request consent to use it? I understand my peace is legal, I have my invoice, cd, manual, sequential number.
I don’t need to validate the applications further. I only want to use my software. Some might say, that such scenarios are rare and it is likely true. Still this case, makes one wonder, if the anti-piracy forces are going in right direction. If it persists, we might be facing a serious problem: the number of viruses, malicious applications increases nearly exponentially, making the demand for frequent software updates very urgent.
Frequent updating makes the OS run slower, as a single version installed over old, doesn’t always run as easy as a fresh install. That is why we replicate our driveway C and then set up everything from scratch… and activate our applications successfully. This time. The next time, we may begin to consider, that it is far better to use free alternatives instead. They may not be as powerful as their industrial counterparts, but at least they don’t care why we install or re-install them.
To put it simple: they don’t ask so many questions and that is something the majority of us want — solitude. Privacy restricted by the anti-piracy campaigns. Time will tell if such practices, will have any impact on piracy levels worldwide. For now, it made our lives a bit harder, than previously.
Computer piracy is far different than sea piracy. Instead Of plundering and assaulting the industrial ships in the center of the sea, computer pirates usually steal intellectual property and then, eventually, give it away for public use. This can potentially destroy the individual or organization and there are a range of examples to back up that.
Piracy is rampant in gaming industry
Computer game companies are among the mostly diminished sectors by pirates. With the assistance of skilled developers, pirates crack the code of this sport that stores information about individual copies. To put it differently, you do not need to visit the shop to buy a game – you can simply download it for free from a pirate server.
Pirate applications has its own flaws. Several online programs are practically not crack-able, as your ID is verified on a business server, and pirates have no access on the market. Standalone cracked software is using a changed code and is vulnerable to malfunction and can really damage your computer, let alone not run properly. Official licensed software ensures that it can get the work done and is bug free – something pirates provide no complete guarantee. They simply don’t care, since, after all, if you enjoy the software, you will probably purchase it yourself.
Necessity and Kinds of software piracy protection
To fight with this situation software companies have established software piracy protection software. The software piracy protection comes in many forms according to the functions. Some DVDs are made so that the game only runs if your certified DVD is existing on your CD-ROM drive. Other require a serial number together with security software on the actual DVD you purchased.
Pirates are usually very great programmers who look ahead to be hired in big companies and thus increase their popularity and earnings. Others do it for pleasure and anticipate no sensible gain from it. They’re driven by the only sense of evil doing.
There are lots of infamous classes of crackers-pirates who decode almost every game that comes out and significantly decrease real incomes of the companies-producers and developers. The multimillion sector of entertainment is continuing to suffer from significant losses due to piracy and this is soon going to change as new anti piracy legislation are becoming executed.
In this highly technological age, practically every element of major company is paperless. Although this evolution has greatly simplified the process of doing business, it has also left industries vulnerable to IC piracy strikes. In fact, intellectual https://onsist.com theft costs American businesses billions of dollars in losses each and every year. One solution that technology teams must consider is using OTP (one-time-programmable) memory to their microchip devices instead. Here are some reasons why.
–Although the technology isn’t brand new (it was first developed in 1969), it’s surely dependable; and its capabilities have certainly been refined and improved through the years. It’s virtually problem-free.
–It is comparatively inexpensive. It is not unusual for organizations to spend into the thousands and thousands of dollars for other anti-piracy options, but OTP memory is simple to install and use at a mere fraction of the price.
–The random number system used by OTP memory allows the user to create an identification number from a massive pool of chances. It is just about impossible for pirates to discover a particular number whenever there are literally billions of possible combinations.
–A system using OTP may be adjusted to suit any specific taste or program. For example, it may be set to allow certain identification numbers to be recovered only by authorized personnel.
–It is a system that is remarkably simple, yet powerfully effective.
In these tough economic times, companies will need to find anti-piracy techniques that really work and which are also cheap: OTP memory might be the IC protection solution you have been looking for.
Every writer will be very happy to get anti piracy software which can ably protect PDF files, swf flash content and html content. Fortunately, DRM – digital rights management programs are available to deal with these requirements and also to provide the necessary controls to satisfactorily implement data loss protection (DLP). These programs permit the author to register a client Onsist Social Profile working with a licensing platform, pick the right customer accessibility degree, create customized messages to inform unauthorized customers that they don’t have permission to start secure documents and also to provide them information about where to source for the permission, and also to set expiry dates and exhibit a web page which affirms the expiry of the protected document.
Using DRM document control software the document writer can execute a watermark capability where the user’s name and/or business name, and specifics of date/time of use are displayed on each of the printouts. Further on antipiracy observation, we could also have PDF software which has the capacity to demonstrate document and user statics, auditing and reporting.
Throughout the watermarking capability DRM will help to identify the location where the leak happened. Additionally, it reports when the document was utilized and equips the author with record control abilities to close off document access if misuse is detected. This is a useful anti piracy measure that prevents people from replicating or even altering your job as this normally contributes to the misinterpretation of their planned message. Data loss prevention can be also implemented by requiring users to view the document with a proprietary application quite different from the one that made it. This way, only authorized users can view the document and document processing tools could be disabled.
Data reduction prevention is all about forestalling the leaking out of a document/s beyond the control of the business that possesses it. In nature this anti piracy procedure is all about identifying, monitoring and protecting, and this is accomplished by protecting a record’s context and content via a filtering and centralized management program. This document control method helps efforts to automate the recognition of cases once the content contravenes set DRM principles, and also prevents files from being emailed or copied to convey a flash disc.
A company will always find itself being required to share its own confidential information with offshore staff and even attorneys all of whom are external to the organization’s firewalls and this also makes anti piracy solutions all the more critical. As such, in an effort to stem piracy, data reduction protection techniques have to be able to secure protected documents as soon as they are in the control of external but authorized parties. Encryption has always been the answer to record
Control but it only goes up to stopping unauthorized persons from accessing the protected information. However, it does not control what the authorized user can perform with the record once it’s decrypted. Nonetheless, we could always combine encryption with DRM controls so as to restrict the ability of those users to share or pass onto the restricted information.
Attack Profiles
Successful attacks on boats, where strength protection is minimum, follow common vulnerabilities, which are manipulated by pirates. These are as follows:
Low speed – (under 16 knots)
Low freeboard – (distance from the waterline to Onsist the freeboard deck of a fully loaded boat)
Inadequate planning and execution of processes
Alert of crew on board is Low or there is no visual evidence of self-protection measures
Where There’s a slow reaction get more about us on wikipedia by the boat and crew
Normally the pirates will utilize a couple of small ships capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots, these are available Onsist crafts usually called “skiffs” plus they generally approach the planned goal from the port quarter or stern.
The use of a mother ship is employed as a portable logistics base that carries the equipment and personnel how to monitor marketing plan to allow attacks to occur farther out to sea, a few attacks have occurred at 600 NM off the coastline.
The vast majority of strikes will occur at first and last light, so at these times additional vigilance is required.
Ahead of the Transit
Prior to a transit, These bodies should be educated and include;
The Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa (MSCHOA), That’s the preparation and coordination authority for EU Forces from the Gulf of Aden and the area off the Coast of Somalia and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), that is in Dubai and is the first point of contact for vessels in the Area. The day-to-day interface with Masters and the army is the UKMTO.
Before transiting high-risk locations, the operator and Master must execute their own risk assessments to evaluate the probability of an attack by pirates. The outcome of the risk assessment should identify steps to be taken to prevent the vessel being taken by pirates.
Company Crisis Management Procedures and measures to meet with the threat within the area the vessel is transiting, should be addressed.
In order to best prepare a vessel, the next training and planning should be considered as a minimum, to control risks from attack:
Register the boat with the authorities, UKMTO and MSCHOA
Review the boats safety Program
Carry out team anti-piracy and safety awareness training
Appoint security consultants for your own transit, who have global marine safety experience
Make Sure You have a good and effective anti-piracy contingency plan
Defensive look at here now Measures
The boat should review its security measures implementing monitoring and controlling the marketing plan and processes and consider:
Ensuring that the vessels routines are corrected in advance to ensure that the crew are well rested until they enter the high risk area
Observing radio silence or enabling minimum use of radio equipment
Identify a safe room
Securing access to this bridge, engine room and crew cottages
Provision of night vision device(s) here are the findings to get watch employees
Throughout the Transit
Masters should utilize the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC). This is advocated by the Nazi police, westbound Onsist vessels utilize the northern portion of the corridor and the eastbound vessels use the southern portion of the IRTC.
Vessels should stay within the IRTC constantly and make sure that it keeps up with its group transit. The boat must comply with international rules on light.
MSCHOA will counsel on the group transport timings which leave at different times and are identified by the speed of the brand protection solutions vessel, therefore if a vessel has a maximum speed of 16 knots it ought to consider joining a 14 knot group transit.
If you have employed a security firm, they’re there for advice and guidance and should also set up the processes and steps for every vessel as appropriate. But, vessels should still make sure that they have added crew as lookouts at vulnerable parts of the boat particularly on the rear port quarter.
It is paramount that a vessel protects the team from danger; this means that only essential crew work ought to be run on the deck whilst at the high-risk areas.
