Asking for help is really really hard. Not just actually asking, knowing what you can ask for help for, imagining what would actually be helpful in an overwhelming world.
It is important to practice.
Even if you have the money to hire movers it might be a good idea to ask friends to help, for at least part of the move. It is good practice for asking other things, in a context that is well defined and that has good helping conventions around it. Helping builds relationships, it builds communities of mutual care. It signals that friends can ask for something similar when they need it. It signals that they can ask for help moving, and maybe they don't have the money to hire movers.

Master the Logistics and Etiquette of Moving Out
On a recent episode of the award-winning highly acclaimed scandalous homoerotic merely adequate “moms love it!” Bitches Get Riches podcast, we discussed how to get your first apartment.
It’s an exciting time! You’re moving into your very own place, getting one of your very first Adulthood Merit Badges!
But what do you do when your time in that first apartment comes to an end? In short, how do you handle moving out?
As tempting as it might be to toss the keys over your shoulder and just walk the fuck away, there is definitely an etiquette for moving out.

"For good" meaning that you had a reasonable expectation that you wouldn't be moving back in with your parents later. For example:
If you moved to college but still returned to your parents' home in between terms, that would NOT count as "for good."
If you moved out expecting it to be "for good" but later had to move back in due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. you lost your job or your housing), count the FIRST time you originally moved out "for good."

i'm a big fan of tv shows where they do an episode from the POV of a side character and they're living in a completely different genre than the main character

#this is why I burn down the house when I move
devastating that you can live somewhere and then move away and someone else moves in and they live there and you don’t live there anymore but you lived there once

yeah well i'm GONNA TRY
i helped @roman-sunshine move (a little, like, literally one carload) while i was mid moving myself.
as in, literally, while i was making 15 minute drives carting boxes between my new house and my old house i agreed to drive 20 minutes to their old house then 30 minutes to their new house and then 30 minutes back to my old house.
by all accounts, i should have hated it! like, it was the SAME JOB, only with longer drives, while I had shit that I needed to get out of my own house! like, obviously it would be worse, right? it wasn't!
and i'm setting aside the warm fuzzy feeling here: from having people help me with my own move i knew EXACTLY how much my friend appreciated my helping them.
no, what made it better was my COMPLETE AND UTTER EMOTIONAL DISCONNECTION FROM THE "stuff"
My boxes of stuff? I moved six months ago and I have a box that as far as I can tell is nothing but coathangers (I haven't unpacked it yet). why do I have a box of coathangers? I hate that i have so many and i hate that i had to spend my time and money (boxes aren't free!) to transport it. so there's just a quiet pool of resentment about the quanity of your stuff, whether you really should have bought it in the first place, etc etc etc.
whereas @roman-sunshine's stuff? well, THEY need a broken stool!!!! they have a life to live and a broken stool is important. an impossibly large bag of plastic bags? well, my friend is a busy person who needs bags for all their many errands!!! all of their stuff was IMPORTANT, if i didn't understand what it was for it was because i didn't KNOW their life, but it was my friend's stuff so OF COURSE it had to be important.
so yeah, i think that's it. you hate your stuff because for most people there's a little voice in your head telling you that you are bad and should hate yourself. you love your friend's stuff because you love your friend.
cleaning up your own living space: sucks ass
cleaning up a friend or romantic partner's living space: deeply satisfying and even a little entertaining
scientists can't explain this

If you want to add context, reblog with where you've mostly lived and/or why you've had to move in the past.

slow down for your disabled friends. thats like a bare minimum kindness that we shouldnt have to ask for. i love that youre so quirky and walking fast is a cool personality trait to you and all that but i bet you can count your physically disabled friends on less than one hand
