Test-proctoring software worsens systemic bias

On the one hand, high-stakes testing is pedagogically bankrupt, but on the other hand, it sure produces numbers that universities can focus on increasing, and then trumpet when those numbers are higher than they used to be. I guess that's important?
The problems with high-stakes testing were magnified by lockdown, with universities demanding that students infect their computers - often shared with family members - with spyware that claimed to perform "invigilation" (anti-cheating surveillance).

Having decided that invigilation software was easier than finding a way to evaluate students without useless high-stakes tests, universites began a campaign of cruel bullying to crush student opposition.
At Wilfrid Laurier in Ontario, computer science students were required to purchase webcams that were not available to sale, on pain of flunking.

And when students around the world complained about the problems with invigilation tools, the CEOs of these massively profitable ed-tech profiteers did what any responsible exec would do: they doxxed their underaged critics.

Writing in MIT Tech Review, Shea Swauger describes the disproportionate impact that invigilation software has on marginalized students, especially Black and trans students and students who are parenting young kids from home.

For starters, the facial recognition software has the well-understood algorithmic racial bias thanks to deficits in training data.
That means that when Black students sit their exams, the tools demand that they increase the lighting to aid in facial verification, and often reject them outright, so they can't sit the exam at all.
Similar problems occur for trans students who are transitioning, whose faces are no longer recognizable by the facial recognition system.
Meanwhile, the systems' unblinking eyes are incapable of distinguishing between students who are cheating by having a confederate in the room and students with young kids being interrupted as they sit their exams.
Likewise, they can't tell the difference between someone who gets up to cheat and someone who gets up because they have a medical condition that requires them to take frequent toilet breaks.
Creepily, the tools require students to pan the camera around their living spaces for "room checks," and then let their profs download and view these images of intimate living quarters, including any family members who have nowhere else to go.
These are important considerations, and there's an equally important principle lurking behind the surface, which is that the problem isn't merely that the algorithm is racist or that the tool discriminates against marginalized students.
The fact that facial recognition struggles with Black faces is the result of a training data deficit, which can be easily fixed, by feeding the algorithm LOTS of Black faces to chew through.
That's what Chinese quasi-state surveillance companies did, using Zimbabwe's driver's license database to perfect its ability to recognize Black faces.

That means that China - and repressive regimes elsewhere that buy Chinese surveillance tools - can spy on Black people really accurately.
This is not an improvement.
And as to high-stakes testing: it's a fool's errand, completely uncoupled from real-world knowledge work AND any pretense of rigorous pedagogical assessment.
Even if we found a way to do high-stakes testing without victimizing Black, trans, poor, and parenting students, it would still be garbage.

Rant
I refuse to play or pay for the sims anymore. I’ve been a die hard sim fan since sims 2. I loved the game so much and it was a really big part of my childhood. But I can not allow EA to pull the scams that they are pulling right now with the sims 4.
I took the time to go and add up all the packs, expansion packs, game packs and stuff packs and if you buy everything (like i used to do when i supported the game) you pay right now $786.16 Canadian before tax. If you add taxes it comes out to $888.36... That is insane especially when you look at these numbers so if you go by what google says EA has sold over 10 million copies of the sims 4 alone is 39.50 lets assume they were all sold at base price no sales since im not including the packs as i dont think there is a way to see how many people have gotten each pack. So EA has made around 395,000,000 off the sims 4 and i want you to ask yourselves do you feel like with how much they have made off this game that they are giving us content that reflects that profit in any way? I mean we get buggy packs that have issues and bugs galore, we get thrown together houses that some times dont come with things like toilets or just dont work because they have never been play tested. Almost 90% of what the community has asked for has not been done or when it does get done it split into so many packs to make more money. we have to rely on CC to have sims look how we want because when we do get cosmetic items in game cc will look better 90% of the time. Then they come out and say they are making a sims 5 when sims 4 has been out for 6 years and still is missing 90% of the shit that was in the sims 3. EA has lost me as a customer and it sucks because i do really love the sims and it does hold a really special place in my heart .

Fucking nobody cares about Planet Zoo, but I want notes for myself for how I beat the last two Career levels (in case I want to go back and beat them on Hard Mode for the achievement trophy or something).
The Last Leg.
This one wasn’t particularly difficult, it just took forever and I kind of screwed it up. Some things I wish I had known from the beginning:
1. Space isn’t that much of an issue, don’t freak out too much.
2. That African habitat is going to be fucking awful. Dedicated keeper, dedicated keeper hut, make it as big as possible from the get-go.
3. Grassland species stress effing sucks. Don’t do an overhead walkway (bonus for Africa: eventually, giraffe), put in limited ground-level viewpoints, research one-way glass.
4. Vet research vet research vet research. As soon as you can financially, stick in an army of research centres and high-level vets.
5. Crowd control was a real issue. Plan ahead. Wide paths, put the guests above (for everything except the two grassland habitats) and staff below.
6. That 5-star animal thing effing sucked. Check periodically before gold level just in case (and then send to the trade centre immediately so they don’t die!), then just be prepared to wait it out. I have no insight into what makes a 5-star animal, other than that they tended to be elderly ones that I got earlier in the game (except for that gemsbok, wth). I got some 4-star exhibit species, but no 5, but then again I only had a fully-researched exhibit species for like 6 months out of 12 years, so.
7. Invest in good quality animals early on. Yes, yes, I know, things are expensive blah blah. My springboks kept dying on me (and the market in finicky, you can go years without seeing certain animals for sale), and you really do have to plan ahead for that 5-star thing, given that it seems to be tied at least in part to the length of time the animal’s spent in the zoo.
Bailing Out.
Uggggggggggggh. This level is lucky that it’s so pretty, because otherwise it sucked. IT SUCKED SO MUCH.
1. SELL EVERYTHING. The time I finally won, I sold all exhibits, all sellable shops except for the western cluster, all ATMs, all education facilities, all bits of track, and most of the staff facilities (except the staff rooms). I sold most of the power facilities, though it turns out that untreated water and broken-down toilets make guests sad, so sadly you’re going to need to replace most of them essentially immediately, though do move them around, because their starting placement is very weird.
2. Guests don’t buy hats until the very end. I don’t know why. I should have just shut that shop.
3. Optimise your keepers’ experience. Start with one corner of the zoo and slowly work your way out, putting keeper huts everywhere as needed.
4. Fucking check fence height, self, wth.
5. START SLOW. Start so slow. I literally just had peacocks (with hopes of the vet researching quickly, snicker) until the timber wolves appeared, and then I just had timber wolves and peacocks, for I think the first 5 years. Yes, you’ll have a lot of money. Don’t spend it. You’ll need it. Because of this horrendous layout, it will be a very long time before you make profit, and you want to avoid taking that loan.
6. The order I did things was peacocks, then wolves, then the giant herbivore habitat, and then I used conservation credits to buy the things that I eventually knew would be coming into the SE corner (red panda, Chinese pangolin, Himalayan bear). I know everyone says not to do this, but I needed the income and zoo reputation while still keeping my guests contained, and I knew that if I bought them with CC I could always just swap them out when the time came. The Siberian tiger and Nile monitor came WAY later, because nobody wants to deal with that NE corner.
7. Don’t be afraid to build new habitats. Yes, yes, I know, I know, everyone says not to, but too bad. The terrain here SUCKS, but I put a walk-in tortoise habitat way to the south (putting them with the pangolins probably technically works, but keeping them separate seemed better), the panda where the guide says to put the bear (below the Bengal tiger), and the bear where the guide says to put a second red panda (which I don’t get -- the red panda habitat is plenty big enough for a breeding pair plus a baby?). There’s a bunch of park space to the north where new habitats could totally go, but I used those for creative placement of utilities (floating in the air and elaborately decorated), and I was too lazy to move things around.
8. If you move too many things around, your keepers will do that instead of feeding your animals. Whoops. Sorry, Nile monitors.
9. Nobody used my transit ride until I figured out that it needs to be efficient (delete all pieces of track, then do your best slash use autocomplete). Also, one of my stations kept breaking down no matter how many mechanics I sent, so I eventually deleted it, and that seemed to work.
10. I had to spend a lot of time zooming my caretakers around to clean up litter. This zoo is just too big. Probably work zones would have helped, but eh.
11. Schedule mechanic visits to habitats and utilities as often as you can (once every 1-3 months if the game will let you). Everything breaking down was so super annoying!
12. On one of my failed attempts I tried making liberal use of exhibits, which was a wonderful CC generator, but didn’t bring in the cash I needed. And on the run that finally got me gold, I forgot to add them until a point where I was rolling in CC and money and literally my only problem was managing staff, and exhibits wouldn’t have helped with that. I now have gold in the entirety of career mode (although only on Medium thus far), and I still don’t know how to use exhibits effectively. Other than Titan Beetle mild amusement.
13. Security cameras everywhere. My guest happiness was always so low compared with other zoos, and I have no idea why, but pickpockets seemed to be part of it? (On the other hand, besides a handful of vandalised signs over a decade, I had very little problem with crime in the Goodwin Memorial Park zoo. I don’t get it.)
14. People say not to promote your staff. I don’t get that one. Promote your staff? Maybe not too much at the beginning, other than the vets and maybe your mechanics, but occasionally I would go through and promote everyone with a ‘high’ workload.

Oh, God, it’s the 10 questions meme again!
@eulaliasims tagged me. It’s her fault! :) This is the one where you answer the 10 questions from the person who tagged you, then you make a list of 10 questions for 10 people you tag to answer. (Mine are silly, as usual, and not Sims-related because I’m that way. :) )

If you like to decorate in the Sims, what’s your favorite type of room to do? If you don’t, how do you handle decorating instead? Bare minimum? Downloading furnished lots?
I actually don't really like decorating, at least not the inside of houses. Build, yes; decorate, no. I do like decorating exteriors, though. So, for me, I usually do not much above the bare minimum for interiors, and I pretty much do the same things all the time so that A) I don't have to think about it much and B) I can keep down the CC level somewhat. I certainly can't be bothered with clutter and all that. That said, I do like to do kitchens and somewhat decadent master bathrooms, probably because those are my favorite real-life rooms, too.
Do you like to listen to anything like music or podcasts when you play?
Not while I play, no. I like to hear the sound effects like ringing phones and the sounds of Sims getting hearts and the sounds of Sims getting busted for cheating and the sounds of stuff breaking. But if I'm building or creating stuff, I'll usually have a TV show or movie playing in another window or on the second monitor I have. That's one of the good things about having a large monitor. But sometimes if I don't feel like having a show playing in the background, I'll put on Spotify and listen to whatever sort of music I'm in the mood for.
What made you choose your first expansion pack for the game (or games, if you play more than one iteration of the Sims)?
I suppose technically the first EP I got was Nightlife because when I started playing -- which was in January of 2008, I think, because I know it was a little before Freetime was released because I remember seeing the signs for Freetime in Walmart -- I downloaded Deluxe from EA before the whole "Origin" thing existed. Deluxe was the base game plus Nightlife, so Nightlife was my first expansion. I don't think that really counts, though, because I didn't pick it and probably wouldn't have picked it if I'd had a choice because it's one of my least-favorite EPs. It was just all that was available for download at the time. So the first "real" EP I got in the sense that I chose it was Seasons. It was on sale for $10 at Walmart when I was there like a week after I got the game, so I bought it. So, "it was available and on sale" was the main reason I got it," but I probably would've picked it anyway for the gardening.
What’s your favorite kind of weather?
Cool/cold but sunny and crisp weather. I can't wait to go home to Colorado in November. :D
What’s the first ever music album you remember buying?
The Moody Blues's Days of Future Passed. I got it a couple years after it was released; I think I was 5, so it would’ve been in 1969. I more or less immediately started picking out “Tuesday Afternoon” on the piano once I could listen to it whenever I wanted. It's still in my Top 5 favorite albums. I love prog/psychedelic rock, specifically, and concept albums in general.
Do you prefer default townies, custom townies, or no townies at all? (Or maybe default and custom?)
Either default or none at all. I go back and forth. When I get tired of the defaults, the empty Pleasantview template goes in. I've never felt a need to mess around with custom townies. At most, if I want townies and I don't have the default ones, I let the game generate a batch of townies. I don't bother with making them myself. But then, I don't generally make Sims, period, so...
Why is your favorite book your favorite?
Because it's historical fiction (my favorite genre) with minimal anachronism and not romanced-up. Believe me, that kind of thing is hard to find, especially the not-romanced-up part. I mean, if I want to read about people having sex, I'll read some (good) erotica. I don't want to read "romance" books. :P
What’s the latest song/jingle to get stuck in your head?
The Ride of the Valkyries. I started humming it the other day when I was cooking, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. And I hate Wagner with the fiery fire of ten thousand burning suns, so I have NO idea why I started humming that damn thing. Make it stop!
What object (CC or not) do you use the most in your game?
Buggybooz's kitchens, I think. They're simple, and I have lots of recolors for them.

What India (and the World) Can Learn from Sustainable Tourism in Kerala.

These days, lying under the warm sun, soaking up spring in my hometown Dehradun (luckily I’m in lockdown here!), I’ve been thinking a lot about Kerala. Just a few weeks ago, I was lost in the bountiful south’s magical beauty. Cycling along bright yellow marigold fields. Hiking amid the mist-engulfed Western Ghats. Devouring organic, sumptuous, vegan Kerala meals off banana leaves. And devouring stories of kindness, humility, entrepreneurship and humanity from the many souls I met along the way.

Being in an unprecedented lockdown has led to many of us discussing the future of travel. We have no idea when the on-going crisis will be behind us. Or what the world – and travelling in it – will look like thereafter.
But one thing is for sure.
Responsible travel will become more important than ever. After all, nature might have wrecked havoc on us to remind us of the havoc we’ve been wrecking on her.

When Kerala Tourism reached out to me with their latest campaign on the ‘humanscape’ of Kerala, it immediately reminded me of something I’ve been meaning to write. Responsible tourism lessons for India and other developing countries, from my travels across ‘god’s own country’:
Create linkages between vocational skills training and responsible tourism
A micro-entrepreneur who grew her family business through sustainable tourism in Kerala.
It’s no surprise that Kerala was India’s first state to launch a “Responsible Tourism Mission” in pursuit of a single-minded goal: “Making better places for people to visit and better places for people (locals) to live in.”
Tourism projects often tend to focus only on the former. To create more infrastructure for tourists, for instance. This mindless focus has led to roads being built through pristine forests and hill stations being overwhelmed with ugly, concrete construction. Officials often feel obliged to pander to tourist demands, no matter how they destroy the local ecology or culture. In the dry mountain desert of Ladakh for instance, that has led to the phasing out of centuries-old dry composting toilets in favor of flush toilets. Across India, that means tourism often hampers local life instead of enhancing it.
This winter, while travelling across Kerala, I understood what the latter part of that statement meant. I ended up meeting several micro entrepreneurs and women’s self-help groups who were trained by Kerala’s RT Mission to develop their vocational skills (one of the mission’s many initiatives). These range from making poppadums and crafting recycled candles to sewing cloth bags to replace plastic bags. Vocational training is offered by many Indian states, but often fails due to the lack of job opportunities. Kerala’s success came from integrating these skills with tourism. By connecting entrepreneurs with hotels, resorts and homestays, market linkages were created to sustain livelihoods.
Many entrepreneurs I met have managed to grow their business and improve their standard of living. Responsible tourism accommodations now have a steady supply of locally sourced, environmentally conscious products. Together creating a better place to visit and a better place to live!

Support dying art forms by creating value for the time and knowledge of local artisans
Nangiar Koothu – an awe-inspiring storytelling artform in Thrissur.
Many of us would love to support traditional arts, music, dance, crafts, storytelling rituals and other creative expressions that date back several centuries. But for a long time, I struggled with the how. As much as I value the effort and intricacy behind many dying crafts across the country, I simply don’t have the space in my bags (and the money in my wallet) to invest in them. And even if I did, the minimalist in me would probably cringe. Besides, many ornamental crafts are only relevant to a specific lifestyle – performing artists, ritualistic storytellers and the like.
And yet, I still want to experience and value their efforts. I want to fill myself with awe as I watch a bell jar artist at work or comprehend why a jaali artist continues to use rudimentary tools instead of giving in to modern temptations.
While travelling along the River Nila with the Kerala-based travel organisation, The Blue Yonder, I had a moment of clarity. We spent time with several artisans who are single-handedly keeping their craft alive. We learnt about their lives, asked them burning questions and documented some of their work. It was unlikely that we’d buy Kathakali ornaments or metal (bell jar) mirrors though!
But unlike most responsible travel companies I’ve travelled with, The Blue Yonder compensates artisans for the time and knowledge they share with travellers. A novel concept for artisans who rely on the sale of tangible creations, but perhaps the only way to leverage tourism to save many of India’s dying arts!

Leverage environmentally-conscious luxury travel for employment opportunities

Environmentalists and conscious travellers often argue that high-end, large-scale tourism is detrimental to the environment and the local way of life. I used to feel the same way. But I’ve come around to the fact that hotels and lodges create significantly more job opportunities than homestays or guesthouses, with the potential to impact many – for better or for worse.
This winter in Kerala, one family-run business settled my internal conflicts. CGH Earth currently operates several accommodations across Kerala (and Tamil Nadu), employing 1500 people directly and many more indirectly. Their signature property – Spice Village in Thekkady – is a single-use plastic free zone, runs 70% on solar energy, has kept the tribal art of elephant grass thatching alive (so no air conditioning is offered / needed, even on hot days), has its own water bottling plant to collect rainwater and recycles paper waste for registration sheets at its own handmade paper making unit, among many other environmental initiatives.
To me, Spice Village is setting the benchmark for luxury travel. One that offers unique experiences, creates large-scale employment, preserves the indigenous culture and is largely positive for the environment.

Tap indigenous wisdom for wildlife conservation
Sustainable tourism in Kerala: Rafting on Periyar River on handcrafted bamboo rafts.
Travelling through the tribal belts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh left me quite disenchanted with the concept of development. In our “modern” scheme of things, the indigenous people of India are considered “backward”. Despite their connection with the earth, their invaluable knowledge of nature and their largely sustainable way of life. Instead of tapping upon their vast reserves of wisdom, they’ve been sidelined into the fringes of society. Relocated from their forest homes, and encouraged to change their diet, clothing, traditions, customs and rituals to fit in with the rest of the country.
In Central Kerala, in Thekkady’s Periyar Tiger Reserve though, I was inspired to learn about a visionary forest department initiative. The Mannan tribe lived in this forest for centuries, sharing their space with tigers, leopards and other wild creatures. They cultivated small patches of remote forest land, fished occasionally and largely lived off forest produce. When relocated to the buffer zone, with little to no livelihoods, many resorted to poaching. A community tourism initiative set out to create alternate sources of income. They were born in these forests, so basic tourism training readied them to be guides, bamboo rafting crew and anti-poaching squad.
Leveraging indigenous knowledge has aided wildlife protection, created sustainable livelihoods and offered travellers an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the forest through guided walks and treks. An idea that can and should be replicated in the rest of India’s tribal areas.

Encourage tourism as a means to support sustainable development in rural villages, not an end in itself

The current pandemic has put a lot in perspective. In the responsible travel space, one important learning is that tourism – with all its ups and downs – can no longer be relied upon as a rural community’s only source of income.
This made me reminisce about my first trip to North Kerala and the conversations I had with the founders of Kabani and URAVU, Kerala-based social enterprise and NGO respectively. In the picturesque village of Thrikkaipetta aka Bamboo Village (named after its bamboo artisans), they’ve developed a community tourism program with a difference.
The goal is first, to supplement farming and craft incomes, through minimal investment in tourism development. That means the experience is raw and genuine – living with local families in their homes, sharing meals and conversations, hiking, getting involved in farming if you’re so inclined.
The second goal is to ensure that the entire community, even those not directly involved in tourism, reaps the benefits. While 25% of the tourism revenue is used for administrative costs, the remaining 75% is channeled in two ways. Towards direct tourism providers – homestays, guides etc, and towards a sustainable development fund for the entire village.
The assessment of what rural dwellers need is often done in air-conditioned offices with gross misassumptions. So the third goal is then, to let the community decide how to use the village development fund. This could include vocational skills development, waste management, renewable energy initiatives and organic farming – and ultimately contributes to the empowerment and sustainable development of the entire village.

Lower carbon emissions through local plant-based cuisine

I guess I can wax lyrical about inspiring initiatives that promote sustainable tourism in Kerala. But like the rest of India and the world, much of Kerala too can learn from Kerala itself.
A conversation still jarringly missing in the sustainable tourism space is the conversation about food. Tourism currently accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. I haven’t yet come across a study that estimates the carbon footprint of food in tourism. But this is what we know: Animal agriculture – raising livestock for meat and dairy – accounts for 14.5% of global emissions, a whopping 7 times more than flying! This doesn’t include emissions from fisheries, which is now estimated to be higher than previously believed. So my guess is that animal-based food contributes significantly to the carbon emissions of the tourism industry.
Besides, to travel responsibly means factoring in the ethical aspect of using animals for food, clothes, zoos, riding and in the case of Kerala, elephants used for temple festivals. Perhaps their responsible tourism mission needs to have a third goal: to create better places for all living beings that share this planet with us.
Which brings me to a small ray of hope in Kerala – a vegan homestay in the hills of Thekkady! Indhrivanam (a combination of two Malayalam words to imply “a feeling of forest”) is the home of Sarah and Morten. Built painstakingly with local materials, featuring dry composting toilets and rainwater harvesting. But what really sets it apart from other sustainable tourism projects in Kerala is the focus on locally-sourced plant-based cuisine. The food offered here – curries, millets, cashew cheese, lemon cake, kombucha and other mouth-watering delights – is entirely plant-based with substantially lower carbon emissions. And no animals are harmed in the process.

3 big tax breaks for Americans who go into home debt
Americans have again dived into the deep end of the personal debt pool
"Americans have now borrowed more money than they had at the height of the credit bubble in 2008, just as the global financial system began to collapse," write Michael Corkery and Stacy Cowley in today's New York Times' DealB%k column.
The $12.73 trillion in debt reported in the first quarter of 2017 is comprised mainly of housing-related borrowing. But there is a bit of good news here.

While mortgage debt represents 68 percent of households' total debt, that's down from 73 percent during the same period nine years ago. In fact, housing's share of personal debt has fallen back to 2003 levels. (The household debt figures are not adjusted for inflation, notes the newspaper.)
Even more comforting, the broader economic picture looks far less precarious than it did in late 2008, according to Corkery and Cowley. "The amount of monthly income that Americans must spend paying off their debt is smaller, and employment is flush."
Possible tax changes for home tax breaks: Will U.S. debt continue along this path, particularly when it comes to loans for residential real estate?
Maybe not if tax reform under the Trump Administration makes major changes to how the Internal Revenue Code treats residences. The outline released April 26, however, is woefully short on details.
As for housing, it is mentioned in just one bullet point:
Protect the home ownership and charitable gift tax deductions.
It's unclear whether that means all current residential tax breaks, or just the biggie, deductible interest on most home loans.
That uncertainty is frustrating some lawmakers on Capitol Hill who must flesh out any tax cuts or code overhaul. "To date, they have not given us very much — one page — I've had drugstore receipts that were longer," said Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, the Senate Finance Committee's ranking Democrat. "The clock is really ticking down, and they need to get us some specifics soon."
Existing home debt tax breaks: Homeowners, current and prospective, also would like to know what, if any tax breaks they will get along with their residences.
As for the debt portion or the home owning equation, here's a look at the three big home-related tax breaks that a residential property owner homeowner can claim.
1. Mortgage interest  The loan you get to buy, build or improve your main home is known in tax speak as acquisition debt. And for homeowners, especially in the early years of owning the residence, the biggest tax break comes from the interest paid on this acquisition debt.
All of that mortgage interest is deductible as an itemized expense as long as the loan is not more than $1 million. If you can get a lender to help you move into that multimillion-dollar mortgaged mansion, the Internal Revenue Service will limit your deductible interest.
What if you happen to also own a vacation home? Interest for a loan to buy a second home also counts as acquisition debt and therefor is fully deductible, too, as long as the total mortgages on all your properties don't exceed the $1 million limit.
Also note that your second home — or your first one, for that matter — doesn't have to be the traditional structure in a fenced yard to qualify for the mortgage interest deduction.
A home, for tax purposes, that house or a condominium, a cooperative apartment, a mobile home, a boat, a recreational vehicle or any similar property that has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities.
2. Refinanced home debt  Although home interest is deductible, no one likes to pay a higher interest rate than they have to. If you refinance your home loan at a lower rate the new mortgage's balance also is treated as acquisition debt up to the balance of the old mortgage.
3. Home equity loan or HELOC interest  If you use your residential property to obtain extra cash, interest on that added home-related debt also offers in many cases another tax break.
The interest on a home equity loan, whether taken out separately or as part of a refi, or a HELOC, aka home equity line of credit, is deductible as long as the added debt is $100,000 or less.
Be careful, though. Your interest deduction here could be limited if the combined balances of the debt you go into to buy the home (known as acquisition debt) and the home equity debt happen to be more than your home's fair market value at the time you take out the home equity loan/line of credit.

IRS Publication 936 has details on home mortgages, including a nifty flow chart to help you determine whether all or just some of those interest payments are deductible.
Schedule A and its instructions also have more on claiming your home's interest payments, as well as the other big home-related expense: property taxes.
Home sweet home for most, not all: The hubby and I have owned five primary residences, the latest one being the casa we call home here in Austin, Texas. We've also refinanced three times over the years.
So as you might surmise, we're a big fan of not only owning our own place, but all the tax breaks they have provided over the years.
But homeownership is not for everyone. And even if you do find that buying a house is the best move, be sure you don't overextend yourself.
Home loans typically are considered good debt as compared to revolving debt such as owed on a credit card. But borrowing more than you can afford, whether it's to buy a house or a totally new wardrobe, can be dangerous.
So do your budgetary and home buying homework.
Don't just buy for potential tax breaks. They might not always be there!
And when you do get the keys to your new place, enjoy! It's not an investment. It's where you and your family will live and make some great memories.

This week, sees me turn the corner into a new decade.  On Friday, I’m going to be 30.
I’ve gone on a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions over this birthday. I think most people do the same when they reach a new decade. So I figured, rather than do a philosophical reflection that’s all deep and meaningful, I’d just shamelessly confess all the dumb shit I’ve done over the last 29 years 11 months and 28 days.
MISTAKE ONE
When playing football indoors, don’t kick the door frame instead of the football cause you’re guna break a toe.
MISTAKE TWO
After an intensive night of drinking Sambuca shots, don’t assume that you’re safe to drive even at midday. You’re not safe. Especially not over road humps. Those humps make you projectile onto your windscreen. Five humps, five projectiles.
MISTAKE THREE
Don’t mistake mouldy cheddar cheese for stilton. Definitely not the same thing.
MISTAKE FOUR
When riding a rev and go scramble motorbike for the first time, it’s vital to know the difference between ‘accelerator’ and using the break. Especially if you’re about to ride past a big ass mound of mud. Using the accelerator will cause you to ride over the mound and do some aerial acrobatics you really weren’t expecting.
MISTAKE FIVE
Don’t step backwards in a tree house unless you’ve checked the trap door is shut. Stepping back without checking leads you to fall out, scrapping several layers of skin off your ribs, and a rather peculiar monkey impression half hanging to the trap door and half hanging on to a branch.
MISTAKE SIX
When taking friends in your first car (a mini) remember it’s not a Range Rover, but a tiny car. Seven people do not fit into a mini. Seven people should also not be driven over speed bumps while in a mini. The resultant sparks from the rear of the car is your exhaust hanging off.
MISTAKE SEVEN
Learn the roads routes around your home. Because after 10 years of living in one area getting lost on a journey you’ve taken 3498589344528943789 times is frankly embarrassing.
MISTAKE EIGHT
If you’re allergic to milk, make sure you triple check the Starbucks barista is putting coconut milk in your coffee. Otherwise, ensure private toilets are in close proximity.
MISTAKE NINE
Yes, yes those really are my legs!
When dressing up for Halloween as a zombie, try not t0 forget you’re actually human.
N.B. Jumping in driver side window of a moving car is dangerous.
MISTAKE TEN
When approaching the deadline for your university dissertation, ensure you haven’t partied all year and have actually done some work. Because turning up on Monday morning for your final tutor session, after having pulled an all-nighter and sheepishly handing over your dissertation will get you the following response: “I suggest you go get a coffee because you’re not handing this shit in.”
It will also result in a university sweepstake being set up with bets placed on how long you can stay awake and not leave the library for. To this day, I still hold the record for 52 hours straight. Got a First though! Muhahaha.
MISTAKE ELEVEN

Check the consistency of the beach on your honeymoon before visiting. Should you inherit your mother’s shellfish allergy, and you’re on a nice beach chock full of crustaceans, you’re going to end up looking like a puffa fish on steroids. No holiday snaps for you, Mrs. Black.
MISTAKE TWELVE
When inviting your new colleagues out on a ‘let’s get to know you night.’ They don’t need to get to know you’re flesh. So don’t flash your naked ass cheeks at them. Monday is awkward.
MISTAKE THIRTEEN
Walk around with an extremely sore toe all day. When your wife suggests you pull the toe because it might be dislocated, don’t then pull the toe. ‘Re-locating’ you’re own toe is fucking painful.
MISTAKE FIFTEEN
If you have olive skin and dark brown hair. Bleaching it really isn’t sensible, cool or stylish. You’ll look like Spongebob Square Pants.
MISTAKE SIXTEEN 
Going out in see-through lacey tank tops – not cool. Ever. (and no, I am not sharing the photographic evidence of this one) Pervs.
MISTAKE SEVENTEEN – this one is for Geoff’s benefit.
God no!
WTFFFFFF ARE THOSE BROWS?
Eyebrows – it’s better for everyone if you just go to a professional to get them shaped.
MISTAKE EIGHTEEN
Don’t go on holiday to Italy with one of your besties, and have too many oranges juices:
You sleep on kitchen tiles…. and throw up in the middle of an Italian food shop. Apparently Italian’s don’t like lettuce with their vomit.
MISTAKE NINETEEN
Overachieve on your mid-life crisis, and have your existential at 25. The result is YEARS of pain, sacrifice and nights burrowed away behind a screen. Okay, I lied. Writing is awesome. This one wasn’t a mistake.
MISTAKE TWENTY
Don’t come out of the closet at 16, only to dive back in at eighteen and have to come out all over again at twenty-one. It’s just inefficient.
MISTAKE TWENTY-TWO
While in labour, remember that the gas and air is not for sale. So don’t repeatedly ask to buy it, or threaten to steal it while the midwife isn’t looking.
MISTAKE TWENTY-THREE  
Don’t smash your BRAND new glasses on your car door. It’s expensive.
MISTAKE TWENTY-FOUR
Smash a glass, drop the base on your toe and then wonder around the kitchen waving your toe (which is now pissing blood) everywhere. Applying pressure is much more useful.
MISTAKE TWENTY-FIVE
When getting off a plane after extreme turbulence due to severe wind. Take the wind direction into account when strategically aiming your vomit. Otherwise, you puke up the back of people’s trousers.
MISTAKE TWENTY-SIX AND TWENTY-SEVEN
While sober, don’t assume people are drunk, grip railings and dance like a lunatic – people think you’re on drugs instead of water.
Don’t willingly enter a mosh pit – ribs usually get broken.
TWENTY-EIGHT
When taking the best man to a wedding abroad. Ensure you’ve checked the tickets for the airport information. Turning up to the wrong airport and you’re screwed.
TWENTY-NINE
When sleeping outside under the stars. Remember that if you sleep on a hill, you’re liable to roll…into the river at the bottom of the hill.
MISTAKE THIRTY
When pulling dumb faces, ensure that no sly fuckers have cameras.
