The software I use at work is Not Working and I have an hour to kill before I can go home so here’s some HCs about assorted characters’ living situations bc I wanted to make notes for myself for fic purposes:
Phoenix: Used to live in a regular apartment, but moved into the apartment above Wright and Co Law offices with Trucy after his disbarment. Edgeworth paid off the building’s mortgage after Turnabout Goodbyes so Phoenix doesn’t have to worry about rent
Edgeworth: Owns a penthouse in LA. He rents hotel penthouse suites while in Europe but doesn’t have a permanent one anywhere other than LA because he thinks it’s a hassle. There’s a locked room in the LA penthouse filled with Steel Samurai merch
Gumshoe: Rents the shittiest basement studio you have ever seen. Does not own a bed. Genuinely questionable if the building is up to code (it’s prolly not)
Maya: Lived in Kurain Village until Mia’s death, then moved into the apartment above the office. After BttT she moves back to Kurain
Pearl: Lived in Kurain until her mother’s incarceration, then moved in with Maya in the upstairs apartment, then back to Kurain with Maya after BttT
Mia: Lived in Kurain Village until she founded Fey and Co law offices with Diego, at which point they moved into the apartment upstairs together until her death
Diego: Lived in a regular LA apartment until he founded Fey and Co with Mia. They moved into the upstairs apartment together until his coma. When he wakes from the coma he spends about half a year recovering in the hospital, then throughout AA3 just loiters around the courthouse because he refuses to speak to Phoenix. After BttT he goes to prison and moves in with Maya and Pearl in Kurain Village after his release
Franziska: Technically lives in the von Karma estate with her mother and sister, but is so busy traveling that she mostly stays in hotels. She used to spend holidays there, but Edgeworth has taken to inviting her to stay with him because she's not very close with the rest of her family, so now her room is mostly just storage.
Ema: Her and Lana lived in their parents’ house together until Lana’s imprisonment, during which Ema moves to Europe with an exchange family. When Ema returns from Europe, she moves back into the house with Lana joining her when she’s released
Apollo: He lived on the road with Thalassa and Jove until the latter’s death, then with Dhurke in the countryside, then in an American orphanage until he was 18, at which point I imagine he crashes on Clay’s couch for most of law school because he is technically an orphaned illegal immigrant with absolutely no money or credit. The internship with Kristoph and his job with the WAA gets him enough money to actually rent a place, but his lack of documentation and student loans mean he’s in the cheapest possible apartment. He keeps it extremely neat but there's only so much one can do. He and gumshoe can commiserate about it.
Trucy: Lived mostly on the road / in the tourbus + hotels with her dad and the troupe until she was adopted by Phoenix, at which point she moved into the apartment above the WAA
Klavier: Lived in his parents’ mansion with Kristoph until going to Themis. When he moved back he had enough money from gigging / his band to buy a fancy ass house and still lives there. It’s a little lonely by himself but when he let Daryan throw parties there it was POPPIN
Kristoph: Lived in his parents’ mansion his entire life. He got ownership of it when they died and raised Klavier in it, and continued to live there until he got arrested. Now he’s cushy in solitary cell 13
Athena: Lived in the space center then was shipped off to European relatives when her mom died. When she moved back to the states she got a decent apartment bc her WAA income was supplemented by those rich as hell European relatives
Simon: Lived in a small apartment with his sister growing up, which he continued to live in after she moved to the Space Center. It was sold when he was incarcerated. After his release he moved in with Athena briefly (no one thought it was a good idea for him to live alone) then to a small but nice apartment, which Edgeworth paid for until he could get back on his feet financially

Finding Resolve
We’ve all done it. We are all part of this new phenomenon, something that barely existed before this century, and only truly gained momentum in the last decade. The worst part is, most of us have forgotten exactly how much we are involved with it, because it is hard to remember what and how much these phenomena cost.
I am talking about the subscription economy, that magical place where software and streaming services are the product, and our monthly bill is usually on autopay. It ranges from SOAS (Software As A Service) providers like Adobe and Microsoft, to all the music, movies, and more that we stream into our homes, cars, and mobile devices.
And it is eating us alive.How many subscriptions do you have? Let’s start with your vehicle. Do you have satellite radio? That’s one. Do you subscribe to cloud-based software? That can be one or more. What about streaming tunes like Spotify or Apple Music? There you guy. The list is getting longer.
And then there are all the streaming TV choices, which runs from services like YouTube TV to Netflix, Paramount+, Apple TV+, Peacock, Max, Hulu, Disney…I could go on. You may have cut the cable at home, but you tethered yourself in other ways to the extent that the net effect is little different.

Then there’s the gaming community, if that’s your thing. More dinero. Maybe you fell for the premium version of an app, like Accuweather. If you’re a regular Amazon shopper, you no doubt have Prime, which costs $139 a year, plus the vitamins and supplements I receive every month from them. Like listening to books? There’s Audible. Old newspapers? There’s Newspapers.com, one of my favorite sites to do research. Cloud storage? Good Lord, I have several, for my thousands of photos and documents.
So successful has the subscription model been that paywalls have appeared everywhere online, like the New York Times, Washington Post, and Atlantic Monthly, each of whom have amazing content, a feast for my eyes and brain. Alas, I have drawn the line, because I sense it has long spun out control. And if CNN goes ahead and paywalls its app and site, I guess I won’t be reading them anymore.
Because I, like many people, have subscription fatigue. I simply cannot begin to consume all of this media. Sadly, I cannot remember all of the services to which I subscribe, and if you aren’t there yet, I bet you will be soon enough. The only way to know for sure is to carefully track your credit card statements to look for monthly billing.
That, of course, is the problem, because we willingly provided our billing data so that we do not have to do this every month. As long as that credit card is valid, those providers will keep hitting your card every month. It is only when your card is about to expire that you get a notification. And if you were not careful and instead provided a bank routing and account number, they can keep sticking their hand into your pocket as long as you have that account.
Ironically, there are new subscription management software sites and apps that supposedly make it easy to track and opt-out of all the things, but they are subscription services themselves. That’s like replacing one drug with another. You’re still on the hook.
It all starts so easily, because many of the subscription services are technically just micro payments, only $5 or $10. We see that as pocket change. Other services offer annual payment options, which provide a slight discount for paying in full in advance. But many of the once-cheap micro payments have started to get expensive, like Netflix and Spotify (I am speaking from experience). They are no longer minor indulgences.
Were these tangible products we had to buy in a store, I bet we would all be a lot more careful. The friction of having to be somewhere to even just tap your credit card would probably be enough to cause us to think. But it is simply too easy in the digital world to keep subscribing, because once we get in that loop, there is never any friction.
We are all going to have to muster a lot more resolve to win this fight, as well as start keeping meticulous records. Otherwise, these things develop lives of their own, lives that will continue hitting credit cards even after our own lives are over. I’m pretty sure none of us will be consuming anything at that point, and there’s no use paying for it.
We don’t have to wait for New Years Day to make this resolution.

A few more for Labor Day:
“If you aren’t fully prepared for work when you clock in, you’ll be disciplined/fired” you need to be dressed before you walk in, and that can include work gear that can be worn as regular clothing such as steel-toe boots (usually you need to be at least partially compensated for buying these) or a work uniform that can be worn in public. However, donning PPE, logging into a computer, retrieving tools, undergoing a security search, and other things that are required specifically for you to be able to work are covered under the umbrella of “donning and doffing period” and must be paid.
“We offered you the chance to take a break, so we get to deduct it from your pay even if you didn’t take it.” If you were working as an hourly employee, you must be paid for the time. Unless they actively tried to stop you from working and you overcame their efforts (please don’t do this), they must pay you for all time you worked even if you had the option not to. Also, if you “took a break” but were carrying out work duties during that time (i.e. eating lunch in front of the computer while attending a meeting, getting a coffee while reviewing email, etc) you weren't actually on break and you need to be paid for that time. And any break in which you did not have at least a twenty-minute period in which you did no work must be paid.
“If you quit, your final two weeks will be retroactively made minimum wage”. This one’s been cropping up a lot recently; while employers can usually change your wage going forward if said wage isn’t governed by contract, reducing an employee’s pay for hours already worked is always illegal in the US. Before you let your boss know you’re quitting, quietly grab copies of your hours worked and pay rate; if they decide to pull this stunt, contact the department of labor for your state and report wage theft.
“The law says we only need to give you minimum wage/15 minutes’ break every eight hours/etc, if I hear you complain about missing pay/talking to each other about working conditions/talking to regulators I’ll do that” Reducing an employee’s compensation or worsening their working conditions in retaliation for a complaint about wage theft or working conditions is illegal, even if the compensation or working condition is by itself legal.
“The employee handbook is what sets your wages, so if you say something in the handbook is illegal then I only need to pay you minimum wage for the hours you’ve worked.” This is another one I’ve been seeing crop up recently, and it’s complete nonsense. You can’t retroactively reduce an employee’s pay even if the document that originally set that pay is invalidated due to illegal provisions; the only thing that an employer can do is give notice to the employee that future wages will be reduced.
“You think the law will protect you? I’ve got enough money for an army of lawyers, and you’re broke; you’ll never win against me!” Labor attorneys usually work on commission, meaning rather than charging you an up-front fee or billing you for their services, they take a portion of the settlement that they get you or are paid by the opposing side as a condition of a judgment. Your boss’ deep pockets makes them a more attractive target for labor attorneys, especially since it’s likely that they’ll be able to find other mistreated employees to join the suit and turn it into a class action. On the other hand, corporate counsel bills by the hour and is very expensive, so your boss won’t save any money by dragging out the proceedings.
“It doesn’t matter what actually happened, I control the records and I can make them say whatever I want!” Your boss has far less control of internal records than they think; most businesses today use a third-party service like Workday to track employee records, and those services use change-tracking storage that makes it impossible to doctor those records without being flagrantly obvious about it. Even employers who don’t use that software still use email and office applications to manage their business, and unless they own every single piece of silicon in those systems it’s going to be impossible to effectively doctor those records without leaving a trail. And, even if your boss uses nothing but paper records that they’re able to change at will, they still can’t stop witnesses from testifying, or prevent you from using your own records (such as cell location records, email, pay stubs, social media posts about work, etc) against them.
And, a special one that you can witness happening right here on the Tumblr Dot Com:
“I’m an employee like you, and it’s hopeless -- they have too much power, and they’ll win every time, so don’t get your hopes up.” I see this one cropping up a lot on pro-labor online groups; they claim to be another abused worker, complain about how terrible everything is, but they’ll constantly try to steer people away from using the legal protections available by cynically commenting about how impossible it is to get legal representation, or how the burden of proof will be on you, or that the company’s money means they’re untouchable. Often times they’ll add how their spouse/parent/friend/etc went through Exactly This Situation and was thoroughly humbled after seeking legal help. Yeah, the US labor protections are crap compared to other countries, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist or don’t work. Someone who tries to convince you that everything is hopeless and there’s nothing to be done about it isn’t your friend or your ally, they’re a company man doing the company’s bidding.
An incomplete list of things that employers commonly threaten that are 100% illegal in the United States
"We'll fire you if you tell others how much you're making" The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 specifically protects employees who discuss their own wages with each other (you can't reveal someone else's wages if you were given that information in the course of work, but you can always discuss your own or any that were revealed to you outside of work duties)
"If we can't fire you for [discussing wages/seeking reasonable accommodation/filing a discrimination complaint/etc], we'll just fire you for something else the next day." This is called pretextual termination, and it offers your employer almost no protection; if you are terminated shortly after taking a protected action such as wage discussion, complaints to regulatory agencies, or seeking a reasonable accommodation, you can force the burden onto your employer to prove that the termination wasn't retaliatory.
"Disparaging the company on social media is grounds for termination" Your right to discuss workplace conditions, compensation, and collective action carries over to online spaces, even public ones. If your employer says you aren't allowed to disparage the company online or discuss it at all, their social media policy is illegal. However, they can forbid releasing information that they're obligated to keep confidential such as personnel records, business plans, and customer information, so exercise care.
"If you unionize, we'll just shut this branch down and lay everyone off" Threatening to take action against a group that unionizes is illegal, full stop. If a company were to actually shut down a branch for unionizing, they would be fined very heavily by the NLRB and be opening themselves up to a class-action lawsuit by the former employees.
"We can have any rule we want, it's only illegal if we actually enforce it" Any workplace policy or rule that has a "chilling effect" on employees' willingness to exercise their rights is illegal, even if the employer never follows through on any of their threats.
"If you [protected action], we'll make sure you never work in this industry/city/etc again." Blacklisting of any kind is illegal in half the states in the US, and deliberately sabotaging someone's job search in retaliation for a protected action is illegal everywhere in the US.
"Step out of line and you can kiss your retirement fund/last paycheck goodbye." Your employer can never refuse to give you your paycheck, even if you've been fired. Nor can they keep money that you invested in a retirement savings account, and they can only claw back the money they invested in the retirement account under very specific circumstances.
"We'll deny that you ever worked here" not actually possible unless they haven't been paying their share of employment taxes or forwarding your withheld tax to the government (in which case they're guilty of far more serious crimes, and you might stand to gain something by turning them in to the IRS.) The records of your employment exist in state and federal tax data, and short of a heist that would put Oceans 11 to shame, there's nothing they can do about that.

Massive data leak: Ukrainian IDs, other documents exposed by years of cyber negligence

Shoddy cyber security at Ukrainian vehicle inspections has exposed hundreds of thousands of personal documents for the past four years.
Largely scans of passports, taxpayer identification numbers, driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, the documents span a broad stretch of Ukrainian geography and demography. Mostly, they identify people who were buying or selling used cars internationally.
Up until April 1, the documents were available, unprotected and unencrypted, on a server of one of the largest cloud storage providers in the world that, though tough to get to for regular users, is easy enough to find for bad actors.
“If it hasn’t already been accessed, it’s just a matter of time before it is and can be abused to ruin a lot of people,” says cybersecurity and access management specialist Jake Dixon, who spotted the documents. “And I know that there are teams of people in Russian intelligence and Russian cyber commands that are looking for stuff like this.”
The earliest documents date to the start of 2021. Dixon found them and informed Ukrainian authorities back in April 2022, but said it went nowhere. Only now, three years later, once contacted by the Kyiv Independent, authorities appear to have started securing them.
The documents in question currently number 992,978. They all seem to come from vehicle inspection sites, which check and certify used foreign cars sold into Ukraine. Ukrainians buy upwards of 300,000 such vehicles per year, per Interior Ministry data. Documents gathered for those vehicle inspections form the core of the database.
Many of the documents are relatively harmless, like photos of cars and receipts for transactions, or certifications themselves. But the database includes core identifying documents like passports and taxpayer cards (similar to a U.S. Social Security Card) for likely tens, and possibly hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, as well as foreign entities who sold cars into Ukraine. Unprotected, it was a ripe target for identity theft. There is no way of knowing the extent to which it has been accessed or what data has been taken from it.
As of publication, the most recent batch was uploaded on March 11. The earliest documents date back to the beginning of 2021. On April 1, 2025, what seems to be all of them were taken private.
Cyberwartime measures
The data leak comes as Ukraine has been — in theory — on high alert about cyber security for over three years.
Formerly public data for many Ukrainian services have gone dark since Russia’s full-scale invasion. This is in large part out of concerns that Russian intelligence or hackers will use information from sources like property registries to locate, blackmail and extort Ukrainians.
At the same time, personal data of thousands of Ukrainians have been endangered through what appears to be sloppy security at vehicle inspections centers. The centers are private businesses certified by the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories that provide inspections of the condition of a car — a government requirement when a car is brought into Ukraine from abroad.

The cloud storage provider in question is regarded as a highly secure system for data management. However, that is not the case when the data collected is not protected by basic security like a password. For obvious security reasons, the Kyiv Independent is not including links to the cloud server containing the documents in question.
However, it’s relatively easy for individuals with fairly cheap specialty software to navigate it and find the documents. Dixon himself located the bucket using software that scans for sensitive data left vulnerable, software that he says certainly exists in Russia and elsewhere.
Scanning for unsecured personal documents has been “a risk since people started moving to the cloud. It’s something that threat actors actively watch,” says Dixon. “I would be surprised if it hasn’t been discovered by someone else in the frame of time since I discovered it. And they’re still uploading files to this container.”
The way the data in question is arranged makes it more complicated to use en masse, or search through for names of specific people listed. It is, however, easy to go through and find individual identifying information for random individuals.
“I think there was a drive for digitization and this (system) just got pushed because someone needed access to this data quickly, and then some connection got opened, some configuration got changed. It’s just been sitting there ever since, collecting,” Dixon described the exposed batch of documents.
Who’s responsible?
Dixon warned Ukrainian cyber authority the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine, or CERT-UA, of the exposure back in 2022, per emails reviewed by the Kyiv Independent. After responding to Dixon asking for more information, CERT-UA went quiet for, apparently, three years.
Anton Kobyliansky, a representative for the State Special Communications Service which oversees CERT-UA, told the Kyiv Independent that the responsibility for both was “cyber incidents,” which did not include this leaked data. Kobyliansky said this data was likely the responsibility of the Ministry of Digital Transformation and declined to comment.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation is the agency that launched Diia, a mobile application that digitizes government services and documents. Announced in 2019, Diia launched in early 2020 with passports and driver’s licenses the first documents to be digitized. Viktoriia Savchenko, a representative for the Ministry of Digital Transformation, similarly denied her agency’s responsibility for the data involved.
The documents come from a number of privately-owned Ukrainian vehicle inspection centers, almost all relating to government-mandated certificates for the import of used vehicles. A number of phone numbers for service centers listed including Center Auto and AutoTechnoServis were dead.
A staffer for Euro-Center, one of the inspection centers that appear most frequently in the leak, did not return a request for comment when reached. The contact number for another servicer, VK-Auto, hung up on the Kyiv Independent, when asked about the data leak.
The government authority licensing the vehicle inspections stations is the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories, previously called the Ministry of Infrastructure. When reached, Ruslan Kyrychenko, head of the Technical Regulation Department of the Road Transport and Safety Department within the ministry, said: “We note that the vehicle inspection centers do not report to the Ministry of Development.”
Currently, Ukrainian government data is heavily centralized. A hack that came to light in December took the bulk of Ukraine’s federal government registries offline for weeks, stalling services ranging from incorporation to vehicle sales to marriage registration.
Responsibility for that government data is, however, thoroughly dispersed.
The Kyiv Independent contacted the relevant authorities on March 26 — including the above, representatives for Ukraine’s State Security Service and the Ministry of Justice.
All denied ownership of the data. Yet, after repeated follow-up, the data on the server began to go private on April 1, 2025 — just shy of three years after Dixon, an Irish national living in Estonia, first reported the problem to Ukrainian authorities. As of publication, none of the officials contacted would acknowledge involvement in taking the data offline, but someone was clearly responding to inquiries.
“Sloppy,” says fellow cybersecurity specialist and sometimes hacker on behalf of Ukraine Karla Wagner, upon reviewing the open data. “There’s a high probability that someone set this up in a hurry, perhaps even deployed a demo, with data replication turned on by default, and they didn’t take the time to secure it.”
It is not complicated to make one of these databases private, or guard it with a password.
“These days, whenever you go into that configuration, it comes up with a big warning saying, ‘do not leave this as public’ because of how many times this has occurred for people,” says Dixon.
“It shouldn’t be open like this, especially in a time of war.”
