byers hate/lack of media literacy/homophobia within the stranger things fandom:

this is such a braindead take like tell me you can’t understand media literacy without telling me you can can’t understand media literacy

1. the blatant homophobia- do they even know who the target audience of stranger things is for? like if you have such a big issue with gay characters then stranger things isn’t the show for you

2. calling will and johnathan stale and boring/not understanding will being gay IS a big part of the story- this is actually so insane it’s like these people watch the show with their eyes closed. when johnathan found out about the demagorgan in season 1 he immediately tried to find it to kill it with nancy they came up with a whole plan to capture it at only 16/17 years old. as for will i’m genuinely so mad cause there’s no way. without will there wouldn’t be a stranger things, will MAKES the show in season 1 he went missing and everything revolved around finding him, in season 2 the mind flyer was in him and most of the plot yet again was revolves around him, now in season 3 he did have less of a story which i dislike BUT it did show how he was STILL connected to the mind flayer and could warn everyone when he was near the season also showed how wills childhood was took away from him and how he wanted nothing more but than to have it back also it showed will and mikes friendship changing in season 4 it showed will growing up and realizing he can’t change that he’s gay and he has to learn to except it (which is definitely why the commenter is mad cause they don’t like gay characters obviously), it showed how good a a brother johnathan is the will and how their bond also strengthened, and when they went back to hawkins it tells us that will is STILL connected to vecna which will obviously play a big part in season 5. and i know i said i wasn’t gonna go too much into byler but if we’re being serious byler is literally such a big part in the show in season 1 they wouldn’t have found el if mike didn’t want to go look for will, in season 2 mike stayed by wills side and showed them growing closer, in season 3 we saw a change in mike and wills friendship it seemed like mike was pushing will away for some reason after being best friends since they were 5 then he randomly brought up will not liking girls why would he ever have that thought?? in season 4 we watch mike come to california acting weird and very distant with will to the point where he just started ignoring him for the most part hmm i wonder why??? also he brought up AGAIN about him and will only being friends when will never said otherwise and after that we just see them getting closer and closer while mileven crumbled.

3. saying all will wants to do is play dnd- oh i wonder why.. maybe because at the young age of 12 he had his whole life change in only one night and was trapped in another dimension for a week WHILE BEING HUNTED,HUNGRY,COLD,AND TIRED. in season 2 he was only 13 but was still traumatized about what happened to him on top of still being connected to the upside down and literally living inbetween worlds while also having to deal with bullying then gets possessed and in season 3 he’s 14 the summer finally came and it seems like everything is back to normal so will just wants his childhood back and to play the game he loves with his friends and you’re really gonna get mad over it??

4. johnathan is annoying but shipping stancy- that’s more of an opinion but it’s still not true and simply weird cause johnathan might be annoying to you but he still loves nancy and treats her right unlike steve did (not hating on steve just being realistic) in season 1 steve was just trash and let his friends call nancy a derogatory word in season 2 steve didn’t care that nancy’s best friend had died and wasn’t there for her the way she needed and in season 4 steve was being weird to nancy even tho she had a boyfriend telling her he wants to have 6 kids with her??? like come on now

5.hopes will comes out and everyone forgets about it cause it’s not relevant- this is actually the most insane thing i talked about this in number 2 but i’m gonna talk about how many stranger things fans are homophobic like how the hell- stranger things was created for the freaks/geeks/and oppressed they already have 2 confirmed gay characters and even more queer-coded characters. there’s so many relationships in the show but you’re mad about a boy being gay when it hasn’t even been verbally said in the show while all the other characters in straight relationships are shown all the time when it’s “not relevant” also i noticed how they didn’t say anything about ronin being a lesbian even tho she’s the only one that has come out.. so the person is probably another weirdo who fetishizes lesbians while hating gay men.

can’t wait for them to watch season 5 where most of the season will and mike are together and start dating and hopefully jancy fully comes back together and is endgame

also why do these people act like characters have to be doing something every second for them to be good characters? just because these ppl can’t use context clues and aren’t understanding doesn’t mean certain characters are “stale”

Im not following them anymore because from what I’ve seen , they are in the wrong. I might dislike Henry but that doesn’t mean that searching for reasons for his actions is wrong. Is that even what they said ? Im literally so confused but also kind of sad … why can’t we live in peace on the byler tag hahaha 🥲. ( also is she for real calling gay Mike truthers bi phobic ? Sure! Basically, it started with Dani making a bunch of posts/answering a bunch of anon asks about how much she hates Henry and hates the theories around him/thinks theyre dumb or whatever.

But what the actual issue was/what bothered me more than any of the Henry hate (since I’ve come to expect that atp) was Dani making comments about personality disorders and “people who just want to kill” in a way that was weird and vague and not medically or scientifically accurate and came across as pretty ableist and rude & making comparisons to real-life mentally ill people using that same sort of language/lack of actual medical info & continuing to perpetuate stigma & inaccuracies about personality disorders instead of even doing a bit of research. The other big thing that bothered me was Dani saying that Henry analysts/people like them would likely “forgive IRL rapists” which is a weird and untrue accusation to make.

And exactly!! You don’t have to like Henry, nobody does, but like you said, trying to understand him/search for reasons for his actions isn’t wrong. Dani seems to have an issue with people analyzing him & people who don’t think he was born evil as a child & also people like me who have been analyzing Edward Creel and who think that there’s a solid chance that Henry might not be Vecna. And yeah LMAO it’s definitely confusing and upsetting but alas, it’ll pass and the world goes on!

And oh yeah, Dani’s been throwing the biphobia allegations at gay mike truthers forever. Even though she’ll claim she has no issues with gay mike truthers, one way or another, she ends up tossing false biphobia accusations at them.

If Byler is endgame I hope El dies bc people will fucking hate Will for the rest of their lives and praise Eleven exactly how it happened with Daenerys from got.But don't worry babes, El is not dying neither Mileven 🤗

I'm so confused, sorry. I highly doubt people are going to hate Will. If anyone is going to be hated in that situation, I think people would be more likely to hate Mike, because Mike is already hated/disliked by a lot of fans. It's not Will's fault that he likes Mike and Will is clearly not a homewrecker considering how he rebuilt their relationship in Volume 2. I get that people might be angry if Mike encouraged Eleven with false words and to be honest, I don't know if I like Byler as much because of that (I wish that if it is canon that they'd broken up in Volume 2 and Eleven's family and friends all encouraged her in that one scene) but ultimately it's understandable if they make him queer and I wouldn't hate him for it.

Also I feel like people would be angrier if Mike gets with Will after Eleven dies because it would seem disrespectful and that he moved on too fast and also if Eleven died, it'd have to be at the end of the season because the show would struggle to continue with her dead. If Byler was an endgame ship, in my ideal scenario I'd hope there'd be a scene of an alive El being supportive meaning the worry in your ask wouldn't be an issue.

I've not seen Game of Thrones so I can't confirm the Daenerys thing, I just know that she's a blonde lady with dragons and that people didn't like the way she ended up in the show. But I will say, Eleven is definitely at risk of dying in S5 so I wouldn't get too invested in her survival. And I think there could be a m*leven break up just because Eleven has stopped talking to Mike after his love confession which could lead to a break up because Eleven has decided she needs to move on and find herself outside of a relationship (although I'm pretty sure the anon came from my post discussing the future of their relationship).

You're fine to think Byler won't be endgame, I'm not sure if I think it will be either (I certainly hope so) but maybe don't go sending random people asks about it? If I said something to offend you, I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. I hope this response made sense to you and I might have misread your ask. you censoring it is so funny😭 (it's lesbian mlvn) but yeah i was gonna say, i was afraid it was too mean but it definitely has the same energy to me, especially the way it's being done these past few weeks. genderbending stuff has never been my thing not really i can be like imagine if they were boys/girls for five minutes for fun (i got an ask like that about jackieshauna recently) but what prompted this recent lesbyler movement is the whole you don't care about rovickie so you hate lesbians accusations...accusations that annoy me just as much as the next person i said so in june. but if the answer you have to "you don't care about lesbian ships" is "yes i do look i made the gays lesbians instead" then i'm very sorry but you made the accusation look more legit to me😭 obviously i don't think people doing it are lesbophobes that would be nonsensical since most of them are queer women/lesbians themselves but it's just a very strange way to go about beating the allegations. making characters that aren't women (in this case lesbians) women (in this case lesbians) to prove that you care about women (in this case lesbians) doesn't really work, it's not very convincing.

i've said before that i would have loved for a relationship that i see as having the most care put into it, with the most build up and narrative significance in one of the biggest shows to be a lesbian relationship because well of course i would i'm a lesbian myself but you know...there's other shows out there...with great lesbian ships...and saying you wished this particular ship were lesbians irks me because it makes it sound like the experiences are interchangeable? when they're really not, it's queer boys in the 80s for a reason. of course the experiences are similar in a lot of ways, that's why literally most bylers are queer women, because it hits close to home for a lot of us too. but i'm tempted to say if you don't like that the experiences are still different, if you don't like that they chose to highlight the gay guy in the 80s experience or if you would love lesbyler sooo much more then maybe...find actual lesbian ships idk. i know no other ship/show will be the same but it really just rubs me the wrong way it feels disrespectful in so many different ways.

i think it's weird to imply that any lesbian ship is inherently better and more interesting (not talking about personal taste) and that a gay ship is lesser on account of being a gay ship, and when your answer to "if you think this gay ship with four seasons of build up is more interesting than this lesbian ship with three scenes you hate lesbians" is making the gay ship lesbians you're not exactly disagreeing with them to me. i know it's being creative and like an au or whatever but the way this recent resurgence came about reads as feeling guilty for liking a gay ship better to me and i just have to say you don't have to do all that...especially because making the one canon gay character a lesbian just is not impressive pro-lesbian activism😭 is canon sexuality erasure no longer a fandom crime what's the world coming to!

any attempt at making a ship "more progressive" than it is is bound to fail and feel fake to me and at least when it's lesbian mlvn it's going from a straight ship to a lesbian ship (as much as i dislike lesbian mlvn lol), when it's lesbian byler...like changing their gender so they can be lesbians and going see i like lesbians instead of being or getting invested in lesbian ships and actual lesbian characters is proving the haters right in a way to me sorry. you don't have to apologize for being interested in byler more it's really not that serious.
