Losing Time (C!Karl X Reader)

You always knew he had arrived before he announced himself.

Maybe it was because he was so colorful - the In-Between never really got used to just how much vibrance he brought along with him when he would pass through. You didn’t mind it though - the pure white of the liminal space you lived in was nice, but a splash of color every now and again was welcome too.

When he had first come, it had been jarring. Him, in his bright blues and oranges and yellows and pinks and purples - and you, in pure white, staring at him. You had been confused as to how he’d even gotten in - and he had been too.

The first time you had met him was awkward, to say the least. He almost didn’t find his way home.

Over time though, he began showing up more and more. He got used to sliding through the timeline and you got used to seeing him around - enough to exchange pleasantries at first, and then to have full blown conversations. You talked about everything under the sun - life and death and the cosmos and human endeavors. It was nice to have someone to talk to, for once. He made pleasant company, when he did pass through, though he never stayed.

Still, you could feel it when he arrived. It was only a slight disturbance - a quiver in the air, a slight change in the atmosphere - but you noticed it nonetheless. You had become accustomed to it, since the first time he had stumbled across your palace here. You weren’t quite sure how long it had been since then - it only felt like a second to you, but it could have been a millennia - but he had gotten significantly more comfortable since his first trip.

Comfortable enough to sneak up behind you and rest his head on your shoulder.

You didn’t jump at the touch, instead leaning your head back to smile at him. “Hello Karl.”

“Hi.” He grinned, pressing his smile into your shoulder. His arms came up to circle around your stomach, hugging you tight. As touchy as ever - it had been hardly three trips before he had grabbed your hand for the first time. “What are you painting?”

You looked back down to what you had been working on before Karl had arrived. It was a painting of something you had planned for the future for the timeline - a man with wings hovered over a lifeless body, a smoky haze from the open crater behind him setting the ambiance of the image. It would make for an excellent finale to an era.

“Don’t look.” You said, turning around on your seat. “It hasn’t happened yet.” Placing a hand on his cheek, you turned his head away from the painting so that he was looking at you instead.

A sheepish smile stretched across his face. “Sorry.”

“It’s fine.” You said, bringing your other hand up to cradle his face as well. You weren’t too worried about it - as much as he had seen, Karl had never told anyone. You would have felt it if he had. “Where are you headed off to today?”

Karl leaned into your hands so that his cheeks squished between your fingers. “Dunno.” He said. “Probably somewhere dangerous and life-threatening.”

You smiled softly. “It always is.”

Karl stepped back, letting his arms drop back to his sides and your hands fall back to their place in your lap. “You’ll be here when I get back though, right?”

“Always.”

It wasn’t long before Karl returned - or it might have been, but it all felt the same to you. You had put the finishing touches on your painting - now stored away with the thousands of others you had completed since the beginning of the timeline - and were getting to work on another one (this time a portrait of a king with no eyes) when you felt Karl’s presence again.

For some reason, he felt… dimmer.

Getting up from your painting, you started through the palace, following the feeling of him. It wasn’t long before you found him leaning against one of the pillars in the ballroom, his chin tucked into his knees as he sat on the ground. His hoodie was torn along the bottom, and the goggles that usually kept his hair pulled back were gone, his curls falling into his face now.

Something had happened. “Karl?”

He looked up when you said his name, eyes finding you at the edge of the room. “Y/N.”

“Did something happen?” You asked.

Karl just shrugged. “Nothing that hasn’t happened before.” He smiled thinly. “Just as life threatening and dangerous as always.”

The room fell quiet for a moment, and you took the opportunity to slide down next to Karl, leaning your back against the pillar beside him. For a moment, all you could hear was his soft breathing beside you - no other sound breached the In-Between. It was unsettling that he wasn’t smiling. He always smiled - you didn’t think there had been a time since he had first stumbled upon this palace that you had seen him without a soft grin on his face.

You weren’t quite sure what to say.

“You’ll always be here, right?” Karl asked softly, breaking the silence.

“Of course.” You said, both to be reassuring and because it was simply true. Who would watch over the stream of time if not for you?

It was another moment before Karl sighed, rolling against the pillar behind you until he was pressed up against your side, face buried in your shoulder. You let him drape himself over you - moving your arm so he could press as close as possible before slinging it back around him, rubbing slow circles on his back.

You trailed a hand through soft brown curls. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No, I just…” Karl’s voice was slightly muffled as he spoke into your shoulder. “I just need to feel… for a minute.”

Settling back against the pillar, you let your hands wander, moving up and over Karl’s shoulders, across the expanse of his back, down his arms, through his hair - anywhere that you could reach.
