Rats In Court Anyone?

I honestly had way to much fun with drawing these. I love my silly little rats so much, these were completely and unabashedly self indulgent drawings ♡

I did steal the backgrounds from Ace Attorney Apollo Justice, but can you really blame me? Anyways, these are basically practice drawings for a little game I'm making to play with some discord friends later. It's very obviously an Ace Attorney spin off, but we will be playing it almost like a DnD game since there is no way I can make this a video game myself.

Four of the characters I have drawn here I've drawn before. They're the rat versions of some bfucu characters. The other two are ocs. From left to right, top to bottom, we have Niko "Night Night" Bergara, Henry "Long Legs" Madej, Kira Norris, Edward Pyrite, Ricky Goldsworth, and Charles C. Tinsley.

I have more characters made/planned to be made for the game, I just haven't gotten around to drawing them digitally yet. It's gonna be a whole thing. Anyways, who knows if I'll post more about this silly little thing more. But it was fun and brought me much joy, and I'm so excited to get this whole game put together!!!

I finally wrote up my December/January reads (2023 in review will happen...soonish.) Recs: Even Though I Knew The End, C L Polk (noir 1940s fantasy novella, lesbians), The Water Outlaws, S L Huang (Water Margin but wuxia but it's all ladies, do not know anything about the original? no problem! neither did I), and Bright Star, Christine Cole Catley (biography of astronomer Beatrice Hill Tinsley - fair warning, it was published by a small press in New Zealand in 2006 so unless you can get it through a library you're probably out of luck).

Lesser known Pulp Heroes.

Flash Casey (sometimes Flash Gun Casey) by George Harmon Coxe, a tough-guy newspaper photographer, the first “hard-boiled” mystery character, along with appearing in Black Mask, the character was also in B-movies, radio, and a short-lived Timely Comic book.

The Domino Lady by Theodore Tinsley, she fought crime and/or evil while wearing a black mask and white gown.

The Crimson Clown by Johnston McCulley, the creator of Zorro, C.C., was a modern (the 1930s) crime fighter, who used skills learned in W.W. I,, a .45, and a syringe full of a knockout/truth serum (later a gas gun) To rob from the unjust rich and give to the poor.

The Moon Man by Frederick C. Davis, the one who went into battle against crime with a glass bowl over his head.

Captain Satan by William O'Sullivan was sort of a harsher version of The Shadow and Doc Savage; only all of his aids were criminals and not reformed ones, who feared Cap. S more than the law, and who regularly died during the stories as more were added.

Senorita Scorpion by Les Savage Jr. is a Western character who came from a gold-filled valley that had been sealed off from the world for more than 100 years, After an opening appeared she defended it from various Western baddies.

The Patent Leather Kid little known kinky crusader character of Erle Stanley Gardner.

Masked Rider by Paul Chadwick, the M.R. was a pulp published by the company that would become Marvel Comics, an early high-concept character. He was a blend of The Lone Ranger and the Shadow, later, he was sold to Popular Publications, who redesigned him toning down the “shadow” bits, but keeping the mask and his Indian side-kick Blue Eagle.

Thubway Tham, Johnston McCulley again. Tham was a grumpy older pick-pocket with an exaggerated lisp, who, while ill-tempered and a crook, had a well-hidden heart of gold and ended up helping the innocent against big-time crooks most of the time.

Personality: At a first glance, Gwen seems to be a shy and withdrawn who freezes on the spot whenever someone outside her close circle interacts with her. Gwen has always been a shy person, she just can’t help it at times! Although she puts up this “icy” exterior, Gwen is a kind, caring, bubbly individual who cares deeply for all her friends. Backstory: Long ago, Gwen was born from a dandelion formed by a child’s first laugh. This dandelion floated all around the world before landing in front of an older fae couple who worked for the Draconia Family. As the couple did not have any children of their own, they gladly took in the infant Gwen and raised her as their own. Gwen grew up in the Draconia Castle, helping her parents and the rest of the staff manage the castle and take care of the royal family. Due to growing up in the castle, Gwen always saw the Draconias in this special light like there was nothing they couldn’t do or their powers were as limitless as the sky above. Gwen still shivers at the thought of being in a room with one of the Draconias. Later on, Gwen eventually became a maid to the Draconias. She takes her duty as a maid as seriously as a knight takes their oaths. One day, in her first days as an official maid, Gwen was entrusted by a knight by the name of Tinsley Lebelle to show her the official works. As they were working together, the noticed odd similarities to one another such as where they were “born” and who’s laughs they came from! They came to learn that a few years after Tinsley was “born,” the sibling of the child who’s laugh gave life to Tinsley, gave their first laugh and thus came Gwen! Technically speaking, Tinsley and Gwen are biological sisters! After learning this, the two were practically inseparable! It's been a busy few days, so the update's a little late. Also... I confess I've been super engrossed in playing Starfield for the last few weeks, so reading has been less of a priority as I hyperfixate. 😅

White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link

My library read, Kelly Link's newest short story collection. I'd already read the final couple stories in other anthologies, and very much enjoyed them. So far I've read the first two as well, and also enjoyed them. Gotta prioritize this heavily now, since it was due back yesterday and I couldn't renew the hold, oops! 💀

Lone Women by Victor LaValle

About 2/3rds through now, and it's continued to be a wild ride. A mix of horror elements and malevolent forces haunt this poor woman.

Speaking Bones by Ken Liu

Almost 1/4 through this thick tome, and kinda surprised that a certain anticipated string of events is already underway. There's still a lot of book to go!

Fresh Dirt from the Grave by Giovanna Rivero

This started as a casual read on Libby when I was having a rough time early in September, though it turned out to be more intense than I realized. It's a story collection from a Bolivian writer, and very much the dark magical realism I enjoy from the region.

I wasn't feeling any of the choices from Book of the Month last month or this month, so I've only bought one new book:

Never Whistle at Night ed. by Shane Hawk & Theodore C. Van Alst Jr.

This is an anthology of horror/dark fiction by Indigenous writers, which I preordered immediately on learning about. It has entries from writers I've enjoyed before, like Morgan Talty and Darcie Little Badger. Hoping to start it this month for the spooky season!

Out There Screaming ed. by Jordan Peele (October 3rd)

Technically already released as of this posting because I'M LATE OKAY. It's an anthology of horror by Black writers edited by renowned horror director Jordan Peele. Honestly, not sure why I didn't preorder this one, too, since I can't stop thinking about it. Includes entries from authors I've loved like Nnedi Okorafor, Chesya Burke, P. Djèlí Clark, Nalo Hopkinson, N.K. Jemisin... maybe I'll go ahead and order it after finishing this post lmao.

The Encyclopedia of the Weird and Wonderful by Milo Rossi (October 3rd)

Part of the prior lapse in preordering was just being busy and a little broke, because I meant to preorder this, too. Milo Rossi is an archaeologist also known as Miniminuteman online, posting about archaeology, anthropology, history, and geology, including taking time to debunk conspiracy theories and pseudoscience claims about any of the above. This book focuses on reveling in interesting and entertaining facts and should be a fun time with his sense of humor.

Wrath Becomes Her by Aden Polydoros (October 10th)

YA historical dark fantasy where a Lithuanian man creates a golem in his daughter's image to unleash it on the Nazis who killed her. She carries out this vengeance but also reckons with this existence bestowed upon her. I'm normally extremely wary of historical fiction from the World Wars, especially regarding the Holocaust, but... this sounds metal as heck. I'd give it a chance.

A Fire Born of Exile by Aliette de Bodard (October 12th)

Another sapphic space opera from an author I generally enjoy, based in her Xuya universe, where sentient ships and elaborate visual overlays abound. The daughter of a prominent official and a poor engineer fall in love against a backdrop of political turmoil.

And while not technically a release yet, I do want to highlight that Iron Circus Comics is poised to launch their next crowdfunding campaign for an anthology: Indiginerds: Tales from Modern Indigenous Life ed. by Alina Pete! The Mary Sue has a piece on it, and the campaign will start on BackerKit on the 16th!

“Fauria Net Is Widened,” Border Cities Star. February 16, 1933. Page 5. ---- 3 Under Arrest Now In Connection With Bank Holdups === Lawrence Goes East === Windsor Suspect Thought To Be Heading For Southland ---- Three men are now under arrest and are being detained by police as suspects in Hamilton and Toronto bank robberies, and search is widening for the fourth. Marion Fauria, Windsorite, who is believed to be heading toward the southern states. 

FIRST ARREST HERE Police of three cities have worked fast since Detectives Campbell and Maxwell stepped into a room of a downtown hotel here Monday morning and arrested Stanley Lawrence, alias John Boyd, as a suspect in the robbery of the Bank of Toronto branch at Kenilworta avenue and Queen street east, Toronto, February 8. 

A warrant was issued yesterday in which he and as '"unknown accomplice" were charged with the robbery, but not before Hamilton authorities had issued a warrant naming Fauria as the other man sought, with Lawrence, for robbery of the Mount Hamilton branch of the Royal Bank. Charges may also be preferred against the bandits for the armed robbery and wounding last October of M. Fogler. Dundas street Jeweler, Toronto. 

TWO NABBED YESTERDAY Carl Cadby, 22, and George Franklin, alias Harold "Red"' Doyle were taken in custody by Toronto detectives yesterday. Cadby, picked up in a restaurant near his Beach avenue apartment, which is also near the Bank of Toronto branch, in being held as a material witness. He appeared in Toronto Police court yesterday afternoon and bail for his release was set at $20,000. Toronto police alleging that he had knowledge of the movement of Lawrence and Fauria prior to the stick-up. 

Franklin was arrested on a nominal charge of vagrancy but is also confronted now with a charge In connection with the robbing and wounding of the Dundas street jeweler. Two others have already been tried and convicted for their part In this crime. He was arrested in the Toronto apartment that had been occupied by both Lawrence and Fauria. 

PREVIOUSLY WANTED Fauria has been sought for some time by local police as one of those involved last year In smashing the Dack shoe store window and making off with several pairs of shoes. Lawrence was arraigned and was remanded on the nominal charge against him here and ordered to the custody of Toronto police In connection with the bank robbery. He appeared in court manacled to Detective James Campbell, and was not asked to plead. 

Detective Sergeants Harold 'Water-house and Norman Tinsley. of the Toronto department, who have been in Windsor since Monday night, stated today that they still had some loose ends of their investigation here remaining but expected to leave with their prisoner on the 4:45 C. N. R. train.

CC Tinsley and Ricky Goldsworth AU where Ricky is a serial killer who’s scared of ghosts and CC is a detective tasked with catching him but also wants to help him overcome his fear (but will not hesitate to make fun of him).

Hear me out;

The characters from Buzzfeed Unsolved - or the BFUniverse - have no set era.

Think A Series of Unfortunate Events; no establishing features of the time frame. For those who are curious what I'm proposing by this, it's the idea of having a storyline in which the reader cannot for the life of them figure out when this takes place. Maybe they go into a 50's diner, but most scenes film like a film noir movie. Maybe they use an intercom system and telegrams. Maybe the clothes seem to truly fit the 20's, but it's incredibly progressive (which we admittably and rightfully already do). Essentially, the universe is timeless and impossible to pin-point.

Back to BFU: Ricky Goldsworth and Shane's new Aussie character were made in episodes that take place in the 1930's; C. C. Tinsley was created (technically adapted) in the 40's; McClintock, 1990; Night Night and Legs are in the fucking mafia; other, more obscure characters excluded, because you get the point.

To add onto that, the infamous BFU-established "Asshole, Iowa" was first discussed in the McElroy Q&A, based in the 80's.

Of course, if you're in the fandom you'll likely see a lot of fanart and fanfiction dedicated to the idea of CC and Ricky in either modern times (I'm sure partly for the easier worldbuilding and *cough* shipping) or the Victorian Era (this being for the detective elements).

There's also something just so incredibly Shane and Ryan about the infuriatingly open-endedness of having no established time setting. Half of their humor is being cryptic or frustratingly teasing each other/us (treasure hunt, mannequin on set).

In conclusion, fuck up your BFUniverse worldbuilding. Make it inconsistent to the times. Are we living in the 1700's or last week? Surprise me, confuse me, I beg of you all. Write to confuse... it's what the boys would want.
