Officers of Moldova’s National Anticorruption Centre, CNA, on Tuesday evening raided the offices of the Central Electoral Commission in Gagauzia, collecting lists of voters for the election of a new governor held in the autonomous southern region.

The CNA said it found names in the lists of some citizens settled outside the country and of some dead people.

Representatives of the Central Electoral Commission were summoned to hearings in Cahul, the largest city in southern Moldova.

Altercations meanwhile took place in front of the local court in the region’s main city of Comrat, where several members and sympathizers of the Ilan Shor Party, whose candidate won the election for governor, gathered to protest against the allegations of voting fraud.

Immediately after the CNA raid, deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, the local parliament, met in extraordinary session and approved the election victory of the Ilan Shor Party candidate, Evghenia Gutul.

The deputies voted a declaration of support for the decision of the Central Electoral Commission in Comrat, which declared Gutul the winner in the elections for the post of “bashkan”. The assembly also sent a complaint to foreign diplomats in Chisinau.

The chairman of the assembly, Dmitry Konstantinov, said the assembly had the right to adopt laws so that Gutul can be approved as “bashkan”.

Gutul won with 52 per cent of the vote in the second round of the elections on May 14, ahead of her pro-Russian Socialist Party rival, Grigori Uzun, on 48 per cent.

Uzun said he “categorically condemned what is happening today in Gagauzia.” He called for “hands off” from Gagauzia.

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean appealed for calm on Wednesday, saying: “Absolutely no one will choose the bashkan in their place.” But the PM also added: “The governor of the Gagauz Autonomous Region must be elected according to Moldovan legislation.”

According to the president of the Electoral Commission from Comrat, Iana Kovalenco, police picked up the electoral lists from the second round of voting as part of a criminal case started in 2022, to which other cases were added.

The convicted fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor on Facebook accused the pro-EU government of interference. “Chisinau believes that special forces must decide who will be the next bashkan,” he wrote.

“Masked people stormed the Gagauzia CEC meeting. At gunpoint, they asked the institution’s employees to give them documents. Chisinau gives all Gagauzians the understanding that their choice is worth nothing,” Shor added.

In a televised interview on the Russian channel Russia24, he spoke further about the “abuses of the pro-European government” of Moldova.
