For the last three years, Alberta police services have seen a new trend in illegal firearms: a surge in guns built using privately manufactured or smuggled parts that make them untraceable. These are often referred to as ghost guns.
"It's becoming a massive problem for Canadian law enforcement and the public," said Sgt. Richard Kurina is an officer with the Lethbridge Police Service who monitors southern Alberta and its border crossings as an RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team.
Canadian firearms laws regulate receivers, where information like serial numbers is stored. These privately made guns exclude regulatory information, causing challenges for investigations, prosecutions, and proactive operations. "Our crime gun picture has probably doubled or tripled," said Acting Staff Sgt. Ben Lawson of the Calgary Police Service's firearms investigative unit.
Calgary police seized 31 PMFs last year, including 16 3D-printed guns. That's about six percent of all crime guns in 2022, with one each in 2021 and 2020.
The force also recently conducted two operations targeting 3D-printed firearms. One of those investigations seized three printers and five completed handguns, resulting in 66 charges against two men running the gun printing and trafficking operation in Calgary.
Edmonton police recovered seven 3D-printed firearms in 2022. The force only just started keeping statistics for them in southern Alberta said he was aware of a handful of cases last year involving 3D-printing operations last year, including in small rural communities.
That part of the province has also been seeing more Polymer80s—mostly assembled gun kits from the United States that people can finish with unregulated parts.
"In the last several years, we've seen an uptick or increased presence of privately manufactured firearms," he said, "and this is going to grow exponentially."
These untraceable guns, assembled in garages, basements, and warehouses or smuggled from the U.S., present new challenges for law enforcement. And police investigations are working to stay on pace with the developments, and I think we're on the beginning of that trend," said Doug King, a criminology professor at Mount Royal University.
"It's the age-old issue of how law enforcement and criminal law keep up with technological changes. Violence has in Alberta between 2017 and 2021; firearms-related offenses jumped 66 percent, according to Statistics Canada crime data.
The Calgary Police Service said 126 shootings occurred in the city last year. That's 33 percent higher than in 2021 and 45 percent higher than the five-year average of 500 crime guns seized in 2022. The police were unable to trace the origins of half of them.
Alberta's government is increasing support to tackle gun crime, including $4.4 million in this year's provincial budget to create firearms investigative and gang suppression units in the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams, an umbrella of multiple levels of law enforcement where there is no place for illegal activity in Alberta must be consequences for criminal activity," reads an email response from the minister of justice's spokesperson, Ethan Lecavalier-Kidney.
"A proactive increase of resources to the Alberta Chief Firearms Office is part of our strategy to make our communities fund law enforcement with files like illegal firearms manufacturing, 3D printing, and more resources for Crown prosecutors.
But law enforcement teams say it'll take more cooperation between forces and better follow-through on prosecutions to keep pace with the people manufacturing these guns. "One hurdle that I find is the follow-through on the prosecution of the offenses," Kurina said.
This is the way to tackle PMFs. Instead of leaving it up to individual police agencies to do it, who are absolutely strapped right now in terms of workload, I think the federal government needs to step up and fund these kinds of interagency investigation units," he said.
Calgary police are working with the chief firearms officer to get information about the people and things involved in these crimes to assist in investigations are also trying to make sure police are providing the information they need to see charges through to convictions.
As law enforcement adjusts, Kurina says this will be a test for police because this type of activity is really at its core what the criminal use of firearms is in Canada and Alberta."

Ways to Make New Friends on Campus
By Heather
Whether it’s moving to a new country or a new school, making friends can be hard but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some ways to get involved on campus and make best friends for life!
Join a Club
(https://www.su.ucalgary.ca/programs-services/students-union-clubs/)
Joining clubs are a great way to meet new people with similar interests and to get involved on campus.
The Student’s Union offers over 300 student clubs on campus ranging from Quidditch Club to 3D Printing Club to Volunteer/Service Clubs. Clubs Week takes place on September 17-21 in Mac Hall in the North and South Courtyard.
I joined the Eco Club in my second year and it was a lot of fun. We learned about sustainable living and ways to reduce our ecological footprint. We also got the opportunity to make fun DIY projects like herb planters, tea bags, and heat bags. I also joined lots of cultural/ethnic clubs such as the Hong Kong Students Association (HKSA) and Vietnamese Students’ Association (VSA). They offer tons of casual social events to make friends and celebrate culture together. For instance, in the VSA, they always have a “pho night” where you just get to eat pho and hang out! You do not have to be an identifying member of a culture club to join. They are open to everyone who has an interest in that culture.
Volunteer on Campus
(https://www.su.ucalgary.ca/programs-services/volunteer-programs/)
There are tons of great volunteer opportunities on campus that give students the opportunity to explore their passion, get inspired, and enhance their student experience!
SU Volunteer Services provides a wide range of programs to help students contribute to the campus community, the city, or around the world.
I was a part of the Information Centre/Lost and Found team and it was an incredible experience. I made lifelong friends and the chance to help others out on campus. I was also a part of Dr. Seuss in the Park (DSP) which is an off-campus position that takes place during the summer months. The DSP team spent part of the summer reading and doing crafts with kids in Riley Park. As an Education student, this program was a great way to work with kids during the summer in a fun and casual environment.
Get involved with the Leadership and Student Engagement Office
(https://www.ucalgary.ca/leadership/)
The Leadership and Student Engagement Office offers a variety of programs designed to enhance personal leadership skills, foster a sense of community, and engage students in a well-rounded university experience. You can sign up for Camp Lead, which is a two-night leadership outdoor adventure, a day of service at the Calgary International Film Festival, or attend Unwind, a casual social event series where students can drop in between classes and do fun activities.  The LSE is also in charge of UCalgary Meet Up, where students are placed in small groups and go to the best events on campus together.
Participate in Level-Up
(https://www.ucalgary.ca/activeliving/levelup)
Level-Up is a free program for all students to earn “experience points” by participating in events around campus and earn big prizes.
Check out their events calendar to see how you can earn experience points while boosting your social, mental, and physical wellbeing!
I love the Level-Up program because it encouraged me to explore and attend events out of my comfort zone and I had a lot of fun. The prizes are awesome and you can earn experience points by attending casual events or even going to the Fitness Center.
Participate in the Tag Project
The Tag Project is new to campus this year and it’s essentially a big game of tag! You do something nice someone and they pass it on. Details about how to play are listed on the back of the card and you could be entered to win a sweet prize!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m really excited about this project and I hope it encourages students to introduce themselves to new people, make friends, and build a stronger campus community!

Ottawa’s new OP, official plan, in light of recent covid-19 events
I recently wrote to a senior planner at the city of Ottawa on this topic.
Here’s what I said:
Marina (not her real name), hope you and your family are well.
I think in light of recent events, Ottawa’s OP should be completely overhauled…
We were heading in this direction anyway, but now I am quite sure we need to fundamentally change it.
We should IMHO follow Barcelona’s recent example to become self-sufficient by 2050…
-in energy
-in food
-in waste
-in textiles
-in manufactured goods (eg 3D printed cell phones)
-in meds …
They even have their own Barcelona currency to promote buying local.
Tumblr media
We already have the Calgary dollar, the Salt Spring dollar, the Kawartha look, why not an O-town dollar?
After this crisis is over, Canada should seriously look at implementing a UBI, universal basic income… if we had this in place today, we wouldn’t have millions of Canadians in a desperate situation…
We must also STOP building mono-cultured office buildings; if someone wants to build an office tower in our city for 500 workers, don’t let them unless they also include in the same building 500-microsuites so people can live and work in one place
It’s part of the new FEJAH movement (for every job a home)
This is a riff on FEHAJ (for every home a job), which you and I have already discussed…
Best, Bruce
Ps Here is a 10-minute video I put together on: How to protect yourself, your biz and your real estate holdings as well as clients, employees, suppliers, guests, residents, tenants… in a time of covid-19.
youtube
This is what I cover off:
IN THE GREAT DEPRESSION INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION CONTRACTED BY MORE THAN 40% in Canada, US and Germany between 1929 & 1933
China’s GDP growth in Q1 2020 was -40% (in just three months!)
Canada can expect similar results: 3-months and 40% decline in GDP
But Canada and Canadians are to the job… our parents and grandparents coped with:
Great War
Spanish Flu (25 to 39 m dead)
Great Depression (25% unemployed)
World War II
Korean War
Cold War & potential nuclear Armageddon
“Tenant rescue package”
(For both commercial & residential portfolios)
1. On case by case basis, tenants get… reduction in rent (by half or more) for three months followed by six to nine months of higher payments to catch up
2. Results in good reputation for landlord + loyal tenants who stay longer reducing tenant churn and, as a result, landlord make-ready costs and vacancies, crucial to longterm portfolio profitability
Colonnade BridgePort provides dental practice with full rent deferral until crisis passes
Make your clients aka tenants more successful to make yourself more successful…
Stock up on… CASH
Prompt Financial up to $40k?
HELOC?
Your mortgage broker really is your… CFO, chief financial officer
Freeze or reduce spending including deferring payments to suppliers and tax payments
Preserve cash
What will the future bring now?
No one really knows
It’s time to make our nation, our cities and ourselves more resilient and self-sufficient
Eg, Pinhao Portugal Backyard Homesteading–grow local
Barcelona’s vision is to become self-sufficient by 2050…
-in energy
-in food
-in waste
-in textiles
-in manufactured goods (eg 3D printed cell phones)
-in meds …
Even their own Barcelona currency to promote buying local
We already have the Calgary dollar, the Salt Spring dollar, the Kawartha look, why not an O-town dollar?
After crisis is over, Canada should seriously look at implementing a UBI, universal basic income… if we had this in place today, we wouldn’t have millions of Canadians in a desperate situation…
Add to landlord & community resiliency via?
Basement apartments
Sideyard apartments
Coach houses
Backyard workshops/makerspaces*
Microsuites*
Home offices*
Home micro retail*
Backyard storage sheds*
* Part of FEHAJ (for every home a job) movement
Add Tech Packages… to your apartments and other rentals; it’s now an essential service for work-at-home
Less need for office and retail space, more mixed use, just add microsuites…
STOP building mono-cultured office buildings; if someone wants to build an office tower in your town or city for 500 workers, don’t let them unless they also include in the same building 500-microsuites so people can live and work in one place
It’s part of the new FEJAH movement (for every job a home)
Bank of Canada Cuts Interest Rates
Historic buying opportunity?
New homes in south Florida in 2007: $875,000 USD
Bought two on same street in 2009/10: $350,000 (both from one seller in foreclosure)
Sold one in 2016 for: $850,000
Kept the other one, free and clear
We need to be more humble about human frailties and capabilities, and treat each other and the planet with more respect and love…
BE WELL EVERYONE

Untraceable 3D-printed 'ghost guns' on the rise in Canada
Police in Canada seized more than 100 3D-printed guns last year, with some jurisdictions seeing increases in this type of weapon and even busting manufacturing rings for the first time.
In Calgary, for example, police seized 17 3D-printed guns in 2022, compared to just one each in 2021 and 2020. 3D-printed guns fall into a category of homemade firearms referred to as "ghost guns" because they are untraceable.
They have no serial number because the printed part of the gun is the receiver of the weapon regulated in Canada. The other parts of the gun can be purchased at gun stores and online without a firearms license.
Plans for producing these firearms are available online, and the item can be made using a consumer-grade 3D printer. To get a sense of the scope of the problem, CBC News reached out to 20 police forces across the country and collected data from media reports in areas where police wouldn't discuss the number of firearms seized.
These guns have been found across the country, from cities such as Saskatoon and Winnipeg to smaller places such as Stratford, Ont., and Vulcan, Alta.
In December, Winnipeg police announced they had made arrests after a "criminal network" solicited and paid legitimate 3D printer services to manufacture firearm receivers.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary announced the bankruptcy of a manufacturer in February. Eight 3D-printed firearm frames were seized, along with multiple printers and other items, including silencers, which police said were also 3D-printed.
In Saskatoon, police seized two 3D printers and "several gun parts" in January, the first for the police. In all, seven forces told CBC News they saw an increase in several 3D-printed guns from previous years. But the data provided to the CBC was incomplete. Of those seven forces, only five had specific numbers, which totaled 46 3D-printed guns seized in 2022, compared to only four in the previous years.
He said that across the country, an untraceable gun can sell for between $2,500 and $7,500, depending on the city. The Ontario Provincial Police seized 18 such weapons in 2022 after having found only one before.
The Toronto-area police forces that CBC News reached out to had seen very few 3D-printed guns. Peel Region, for example, seized only one last year and had not previously tracked numbers.
York Regional Police have seized a single 3D-printed firearm. It was a "fully functioning firearm" and was used in a carjacking robbery, according to a statement from the police organization.
In Toronto, eight 3D-printed guns have been seized since 2020. But in a statement to the CBC, Toronto Police Services (TPS) said cross-border importation and trafficking of firearms produced by regulated gun manufacturers remained the "predominant public safety threat in Toronto at this time."
Even so, there are concerns in Canada's biggest city about other types of untraceable ghost guns. In 2013, 3D-printed guns first made headlines in the U.S. The firearm in question was called the Liberator and was a single-shot pistol. Its creator wanted to put the plans online so others could make them.
It was the start of a legal battle stateside in 2018, when a lawsuit filed by Cody Wilson, the creator of The Liberator, was settled. The move made it legal to post firearm plans online.
In most U.S. states, residents are allowed to make a gun for personal use. In Wisconsin, for example, gun designer Ethan Middleton has posted plans for firearms online, sharing them with a large community of 3D-printed firearm enthusiasts.
Middleton says, for him, it's about rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution: the First Amendment, or freedom of speech, and the Second Amendment, or the right to bear arms.
Middleton's gun designs are named after foods (Apple Pie, Mac 'n' Cheese) and have been downloaded thousands of times. He says several Canadians have contacted him about his designs.
In an interview with CBC News, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said his biggest concern about ghost guns is that they are fast, cheap, and accessible, and their purpose is to evade the law. And so it's obvious why it is that organized crime uses this technology.
Last year, Mendicino called these firearms a concern for Canadian and U.S. law enforcement. But C-21, Canada's recently introduced firearms legislation, does not target them specifically.
The Standing Committee on Public Safety examines Bill C-21, which makes amendments to Canada's Firearms Act. Mendicino said the committee "is examining a way in which we can make it illegal under the law with further particularity in the definition of parts of a firearm, which would include barrels and slides."
He said that the government wants "to send a powerful signal to the organized criminal community that if you're in the business of trying to evade accountability through the law, that we're going to make it harder for you, through this deterrence, and bring you to justice."

Makerspaces as Learning Spaces
So-called “maker spaces” are proliferating in campus libraries, but truly effective ones require much more than a 3D printer and some shiny new toys.  This week, Ken Steele chats with Kerry Harmer, the Maker Studio Specialist at Mount Royal University, about the potential connections between academic makerspaces and undergraduate curriculum and pedagogy. Makerspaces are creative spaces for thinking differently, Kerry explains, “a place for students to make a mess, to be creative, and a safe environment to get things wrong.”
MRU’s Maker Studio is a bright, glass-walled space on the main floor of the Riddell Library & Learning Centre. (If you missed our episode on MRU’s new $110 million library, check it out: https://youtu.be/eSM-wyyxXVs ). The Maker Studio has 3D printers and scanners, laser cutters, 7 kinds of sewing machines, and a full suite of electronics and robotics from Little Bits to ADA Fruit, Raspberry Pi, Arduino and more. (For an inventory of equipment and software see https://library.mtroyal.ca/teaching/makerstudio/resources ).
Mount Royal’s Maker Studio is “completely barrier-free,” open to students, faculty, staff and the external community in Calgary, free of charge. Because material costs can cause users to second-guess themselves, all materials for 3D printing are offered completely free as part of the pilot year, to help build digital literacies and see how the technology gets used.
So why do Makerspaces so often wind up in campus libraries? Meagan Bowler, Dean of Libraries at MRU, explains that “a library collection is not just a collection of books.  It can be a collection of software, of tools. It aligns with our mission to collect the things our users need to create new knowledge and get it out there into the world.” Moreover, Kerry Harmer emphasizes that locating new technologies centrally on a campus removes barriers, inspires interdisciplinary collaboration, and democratizes the technology. “There’s a real kind of magic and synergy, peer learning and self-directed learning” when students from across the university work beside each other in the space.
A big part of Kerry’s job is working with faculty across many disciplines to develop unexpected curriculum connections for their students and class projects. Science and technology faculty and students actually seem to be using the Maker Studio less than students in the Arts and elsewhere. So far, more than 24 courses from all faculties have done coursework in the Maker Studio, from Math, Child Studies, and Interior Design, to Social Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship classes. Makerspaces are increasingly part of the learning commons in primary and secondary schools, so it’s really important that MRU’s pre-service elementary school teachers get familiar with the technologies that will be in the K-12 curriculum they will teach. In addition to working one-on-one with faculty across the university, Kerry is developing a full-day faculty workshop to expose them to the design thinking process, and the resources of the Maker Studio. Then faculty can better consider how to incorporate making experiences into their curricula, and how to assess the learning that lies behind student creations.
Maker spaces are about much more than 3D printers, which “can only output as good as you put in.” The key, Kerry explains, is to understand that the learning in a makerspace “is not necessarily about the making; sometimes it’s about the thinking,” from problem definition and human-centred design to design thinking. The ideation process is similar, for a 3D print or a traditional essay: “The tools are just the output for the thinking that happens in the Maker Studio, which is creative, which is innovative… it’s about making change.”
Special thanks to Mount Royal University for hosting our visit and providing the videographers for this episode.

Covid-19 Crisis Planning by Bruce M Firestone, PhD
Here is a 10-minute video I put together on: How to protect yourself, your biz and your real estate holdings as well as clients, employees, suppliers, guests, residents, tenants… in a time of covid-19.

Where Libraries are the Tourist Attractions
About a decade ago libraries across the world faced a dilemma. Their vital functions — to supply books and access to information for the public — were being replaced by Amazon, e-books and public Wi-Fi.
To fight for their survival, said Loida Garcia-Febo, president of the American Library Association, libraries tried to determine what other role they could play. “They invented these amazing new initiatives that are finally launching now,” she said. It took them this long to raise money and build them.
Libraries are certainly having a moment. In the past few years dozens of new high-profile libraries have opened close to home and across the world. And they certainly don’t resemble the book-depot vision of libraries from the past.
To attract visitors from home and abroad, many libraries have advanced, even quirky amenities. They have rooftop gardens, public parks, verandas, play spaces, teen centers, movie theaters, gaming rooms, art galleries, restaurants and more. The new library in Aarhus, Denmark, has a massive gong that rings whenever a mother in a nearby hospital gives birth.
Ms. Garcia-Febo knows of multiple libraries offering free work space for growing numbers of entrepreneurs. These aren’t just alternatives to coffee shops, spaces for people to pull out their laptops and work. The libraries have fancy meeting rooms for them to meet with potential clients, business librarians who can help them solve their financial challenges, and classes to teach them vital skills. At no cost, it’s a much cheaper option than spending hundreds of dollars for a desk at WeWork.
Libraries are supplying the public with other features they may not have at home. Twenty years ago that was books. Now it’s expensive new technology like 3D printers, laser cutters and broadcasting studios for podcasts and movies. Visitors are going to libraries to try before they buy. Other people just want to play with something that may not ever be able to afford.
Meeting diverse needs requires a sophisticated building, and many libraries are employing the world’s best architects to create showstopping designs. The new buildings are transforming skylines, going viral on social media and attracting tourists from all over the world. For many of these libraries the books are overshadowed by other amenities.
Here’s a look at some of the world’s newest and most creative libraries.
Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki Central Library Oodi
On Dec. 6, 2018, Finland celebrated its 101st anniversary of independence from Russia. One day before, the Finns received an anniversary present: a new central library named Oodi.
The library’s facade is made almost entirely of spruce, sourced from Finland. It has steel and glass structures mixed in, creating a soft, inviting look. The Helsinki government allocated 68 million euros to the project as well as a prime spot opposite the Finnish Parliament (the federal government provided 30 million more). A local firm, ALA Architects, won the commission over 543 other competitors.
Only one third of the 185,000-square-foot space is allocated to books (transported by specially designed robots); the rest is community space designed for meeting and doing.
At the “book heaven” on the top floor, visitors sprawl out among potted trees and on specially commissioned wool carpets. An urban workshop on the second floor has sewing machines, scanners and printers as well as laser cutters and soldering stations, with spaces allocated to sewing, making badges, and even playing the drums. There is room for pop-up markets and entrepreneurs can rent out work stations to meet with colleagues or clients. There are pop-up information desks where organizations can inform visitors about their work.
In March, Oodi welcomed its one millionth visitor. “We have tourists from all over the world visiting, but mainly from Europe mostly, China, Japan and America,” said Anna-Maria Soininvaara, the library’s director. “Usually they want to experience the Maker Space and ask where all the books are because the shelves are always half empty because they’re all on loan.”
Dublin, Ireland
Museum of Literature
On St. Stephen’s Green, the Central Park of Dublin, there are three grand Georgian buildings, one of which was built by the architect Richard Cassels (also known as Richard Castle) in the 1700s. Behind them are lush Victorian gardens that open up to more secret oases. One has a 200-year-old strawberry tree.
These structures were previously the original home of the University College Dublin, where many of Ireland’s most famous writers studied. On September 20, they will be open to the public for the first time, as home to the Museum of Literature Ireland, or MoLI.
Visitors will be able to see the old physics theater where James Joyce set a chapter of his “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” and the original print of “Ulysses,” famously called copy number 1. The bedroom of poet Gerard Manley Hopkins is still intact and will be available for viewing. Private letters from Joyce have been pulled out of storage for display.
The museum will also have a Joyce Research library and a reading room. There will be seats for working in the garden. “We are re-landscaping what we think is the only publicly accessible historic house garden in Dublin,” said Simon O’Connor, the museum’s director. “We take that responsibility seriously.”
He’s also excited about the museum’s radio station that will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Academics, musicians, and writers passing through the cities can stop in,” he said. “This is a living, breathing thing.”
Calgary’s New Central Library has a train running through it, as the site was designed to accommodate an active Light Rail Transit Line that already existed. The lobby is an arched bridge that lets locomotives go under it, and in “living rooms” patrons can sit on swirly chairs and watch them zoom by all day.
The library, which opened last November, was built to replace the existing downtown branch. “The old central library location was almost too small from the moment it opened,” said Kate Thompson, the vice president of development who led the project. “Calgary’s population has doubled since that time.” The new building offers 60 percent more space.
The library goes from “fun” to “serious” as visitors ascend the spiral staircase. On lower floors there are two cafes, a teen center, a children’s space and a 320-seat theater. The highest floor is the Great Reading Room, a more traditional library space surrounded by wooden planks. “There are no signs on the walls to ask for silence,” said Ms. Thompson. “But the room is always in a state of hushed silence as people study and read within the wooden oasis.”
Calgary is one of many Canadian cities getting a new super-library, as the locals call them. Ottawa is spending $192.9 million on a library scheduled to open in 2024 that will highlight views of the scenic Ottawa River and an exhibit space for the national archives of Canada. And in February 2020, Edmonton, Alberta, plans to debut its new Milner Library. Among its amenities will be a 65-inch multi-touch table in the lobby for visitors to play games, participate in surveys and make digital art.
Doha, Qatar
Qatar National Library
Designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the Qatar National Library, which opened in April 2018, is all about symbolism, a physical representation of the country’s reverence for learning.
The entry way is full of stacks housing almost one million books, including 137,000 for children and 35,000 for teens. “The way they are built on an incline, it looks like they are coming out of the floor,” said Dr. Sohair Wastawy, the library’s executive director. “It elevates the books and the knowledge people are looking for.”
The 72-foot-tall ceiling is made entirely of glass, drilling home the message that light is essential to learning. The Heritage Library, composed of 11 rooms full of objects significant to Qatar and the region, is sunk 20 feet into the ground; it looks like an excavation site. “The symbolism is that heritage is the root of the nation, the root of the land,” Dr. Wastawy said.
What the library has in looks it also has in programming. Every month the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra performs for the public for free. This is only one of the 80 to 90 free events the library holds monthly. One of the most popular activities is a knitting group. Women come every Thursday and stay for four hours. There are labs for writing music, broadcast rooms with green screens, and play spaces for children of all ages.
“The public didn’t have that kind of community space, only cafes and shops to meet,” said Ms. Wastaway. “Now the library is the place the entire family can come for the entire day without getting bored.”
Tianjin, China
Tianjin Binhai Library
The Tianjin Binhai Library was built for practical purposes, to serve the Binhai New Area, which was formed in 2009 by the merger of three districts of Tianjin, a port city in northeastern China. It opened in October 2017 and has everything you would expect from a library: reading rooms, learning spaces, book storage and a large archive. But the majority of guests don’t go there to utilize the services. They visit from all over the world to see the fantastical architecture created by the Dutch firm MVRDV and local architects from the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute.
“I think for the first week the library had around 10,000 visitors per day,” said Winy Maas, a founding partner with MVRDV and the architect responsible for the library. “People were lining up in the street to enter!”
The 363,000-square-foot space is painted floor to ceiling in pure white. In the middle of the space is a spherical auditorium nicknamed “the eye.” Around it are undulating floor-to-ceiling shelves that form waves. On the lower levels there are shelves with real books. On the upper levels the shelves contain aluminum plates with paintings of books on them, due in part to fire regulations.) Staircases are incorporated into the bookshelves: It’s a popular place for selfies and Instagram posts.
The space also has two rooftop decks offering views of the surrounding area. More traditional parts of the library are found to the side and below the attention-grabbing lobby.
The Central Library in Austin opened its doors on October 2017 with the Texas belief that bigger is always better. With six floors and 200,000-square-feet of space, it is twice the size of the former Old Faulk Central Library and located less than half a mile away.
The library sits next to Shoal Creek and Lady Bird Lake, areas of natural beauty. Many amenities take advantage of the location by focusing on the outdoors. Wrap-around-porches serve as reading rooms. The children’s room has a reading porch adjacent to it and a giant chess set just outside.
“The design gives you a sense of peace,” said Ms. Garcia-Febo, the library association president who recently visited the space. “It is very helpful for communities to have these spaces where they can feel peace.”
There is a seed library where users can check out seeds and plant them at home. The library even makes its own solar energy (30 percent of the building’s energy is generated this way) and collects rainwater in a 373,000 gallon cistern. It is used in the restrooms and for landscape irrigation.
One of the even quirkier features of the new library is a “technology petting zoo” on the fifth floor where visitors can play with new gadgets they don’t yet (or might not ever) own. They can draw on tablets, test out Philips Hue smart Wifi-lights, create their own model on a 3D printer, or record a song on a Spire Studio.
Oslo, Norway
Deichman Bjørvika
Construction of a new main branch of Deichman, Oslo’s public library, is currently underway in the newly established neighborhood of Bjørvika. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2020, it will serve as a public landmark, time capsule and entertainment hub.
This library is designed to see and be seen. The top of the building cantilevers, seen from downtown Oslo and the train station. Large, open entrances will be placed on the east, west, and south sides to welcome visitors from many directions. At night the library will change colors to reflect the events taking place that evening. Viewing areas inside the library will offer spectacular views of Oslo, the fjord, and the city’s green, rolling hills.
Inside the library, a room storing secret manuscripts won’t be opened until 2114, part of The Future Library Project conceived by the artist Katie Paterson. Every year from 2014 to 2114 a popular writer is creating a unique manuscript written on local paper (a forest of 1,000 trees was planted for the project.) After the 100 year period they can finally be read publicly.
More visitors will use the library’s entertainment facilities, including a large movie theater and a gaming zone that allows patrons to battle one another in public. (It’s one way to get teens in the door.)
