🚨 My article on parental rights and ‘pronoun policies’ in Canadian law is now out! 🚨

I argue that they don’t further a pressing and substantial objective, because they either (a) fail to advance parents’ interest in promoting the best interests of their child, or (b) deploy a property-like conception of parental rights that is offensive to a free and democratic society.

I am delighted to see it published with the Alberta Law Review, which is run by our students at UAlberta alongside those at UCalgary.

'What is that?' Scientists explain white patch that appears near northern lights

A whitish, gray patch that sometimes appears in the night sky alongside the northern lights has been explained for the first time by researchers at the University of Calgary.

The article, which was published on Dec. 30 in the journal Nature Communications, explores a "structured continuum emission" that's associated with aurora borealis.

"You'd see this dynamic green aurora, you'd see some of the red aurora in the background and, all of a sudden, you'd see this structured—almost like a patch—gray-toned or white toned-emission connected to the aurora," says Dr. Emma Spanswick, Ph.D., lead author on the paper and an associate professor with the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science.

"So, the first response of any scientist is, 'Well, what is that?'"

Spanswick says the white patch has been referenced in scientific papers before, but it has never been explained.

Her team's paper concludes it's "most certainly a heat source" and says it suggests that the aurora borealis are more complex than previously thought.

Spanswick says the discovery was made possible because an advancement in camera technology allows both amateur photographers and scientists to see true color images of the night sky.

"Everyone has noticed the advancement in digital photography. Your cellphone can now take pictures of the aurora," she says. "That has flowed to the commercial sensor market now.

"Those types of sensors can now be found in more commercial, more robust sensors that we would use in science."

The team's research came after there was a renewed interest in continuum emission with the discovery and observations of the long, glowing ribbon of purple light known as STEVE—or Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement.

"There are similarities between what we're seeing now and STEVE," explains Spanswick. "STEVE manifests itself as this mauve or gray-toned structure.

"To be honest, the elevation of the spectrum between the two is very similar but this, because of its association with dynamic aurora, it's almost embedded in the aurora. It's harder to pick out if you were to look at it, whereas STEVE is separate from the aurora—a big band crossing the sky."

The latest research is also significant because it includes three UCalgary students, including undergraduate Josh Houghton who was initially hired as an intern on the project.

"I was still learning things at the time," he says. "I had just started my internship, and I very quickly got involved. It's just very, very cool."

Spanswick says Houghton did a lot of the analysis on the research, which led to his participation in the Nature paper as an undergraduate student.

"He's had one heck of an internship experience," she says.

Houghton will continue the research as part of his undergrad honors thesis, before taking on his master's degree at UCalgary next year.

Ways to Make New Friends on Campus

Whether it’s moving to a new country or a new school, making friends can be hard but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some ways to get involved on campus and make best friends for life!

Join a Club

Joining clubs are a great way to meet new people with similar interests and to get involved on campus.

The Student’s Union offers over 300 student clubs on campus ranging from Quidditch Club to 3D Printing Club to Volunteer/Service Clubs. Clubs Week takes place on September 17-21 in Mac Hall in the North and South Courtyard.

I joined the Eco Club in my second year and it was a lot of fun. We learned about sustainable living and ways to reduce our ecological footprint. We also got the opportunity to make fun DIY projects like herb planters, tea bags, and heat bags. I also joined lots of cultural/ethnic clubs such as the Hong Kong Students Association (HKSA) and Vietnamese Students’ Association (VSA). They offer tons of casual social events to make friends and celebrate culture together. For instance, in the VSA, they always have a “pho night” where you just get to eat pho and hang out! You do not have to be an identifying member of a culture club to join. They are open to everyone who has an interest in that culture.

There are tons of great volunteer opportunities on campus that give students the opportunity to explore their passion, get inspired, and enhance their student experience!

SU Volunteer Services provides a wide range of programs to help students contribute to the campus community, the city, or around the world.

I was a part of the Information Centre/Lost and Found team and it was an incredible experience. I made lifelong friends and the chance to help others out on campus. I was also a part of Dr. Seuss in the Park (DSP) which is an off-campus position that takes place during the summer months. The DSP team spent part of the summer reading and doing crafts with kids in Riley Park. As an Education student, this program was a great way to work with kids during the summer in a fun and casual environment.

The Leadership and Student Engagement Office offers a variety of programs designed to enhance personal leadership skills, foster a sense of community, and engage students in a well-rounded university experience. You can sign up for Camp Lead, which is a two-night leadership outdoor adventure, a day of service at the Calgary International Film Festival, or attend Unwind, a casual social event series where students can drop in between classes and do fun activities.  The LSE is also in charge of UCalgary Meet Up, where students are placed in small groups and go to the best events on campus together.

Participate in Level-Up

Level-Up is a free program for all students to earn “experience points” by participating in events around campus and earn big prizes.

Check out their events calendar to see how you can earn experience points while boosting your social, mental, and physical wellbeing!

I love the Level-Up program because it encouraged me to explore and attend events out of my comfort zone and I had a lot of fun. The prizes are awesome and you can earn experience points by attending casual events or even going to the Fitness Center.

Participate in the Tag Project

The Tag Project is new to campus this year and it’s essentially a big game of tag! You do something nice someone and they pass it on. Details about how to play are listed on the back of the card and you could be entered to win a sweet prize!

I’m really excited about this project and I hope it encourages students to introduce themselves to new people, make friends, and build a stronger campus community!
